1 One day Jonathan son of Saul said to his young armour-bearer, ‘Come, let’s go over to the Philistine outpost on the other side.’ But he did not tell his father. 2 Saul was staying on the outskirts of Gibeah under a pomegranate tree in Migron. With him were about six hundred men, 3 among whom was Ahijah, who was wearing an ephod. He was a son of Ichabod’s brother Ahitub son of Phinehas, the son of Eli, the Lord’s priest in Shiloh. No-one was aware that Jonathan had left. 4 On each side of the pass that Jonathan intended to cross to reach the Philistine outpost was a cliff; one was called Bozez and the other Seneh. 5 One cliff stood to the north towards Michmash, the other to the south towards Geba. 6 Jonathan said to his young armour-bearer, ‘Come, let’s go over to the outpost of those uncircumcised men. Perhaps the Lord will act on our behalf. Nothing can hinder the Lord from saving, whether by many or by few.’ 7 ‘Do all that you have in mind,’ his armour-bearer said. ‘Go ahead; I am with you heart and soul.’ 8 Jonathan said, ‘Come on, then; we will cross over towards them and let them see us. 9 If they say to us, “Wait there until we come to you,” we will stay where we are and not go up to them. 10 But if they say, “Come up to us,” we will climb up, because that will be our sign that the Lord has given them into our hands.’ 11 So both of them showed themselves to the Philistine outpost. ‘Look!’ said the Philistines. ‘The Hebrews are crawling out of the holes they were hiding in.’ 12 The men of the outpost shouted to Jonathan and his armour-bearer, ‘Come up to us and we’ll teach you a lesson.’ So Jonathan said to his armour-bearer, ‘Climb up after me; the Lord has given them into the hand of Israel.’ 13 Jonathan climbed up, using his hands and feet, with his armour-bearer right behind him. The Philistines fell before Jonathan, and his armour-bearer followed and killed behind him. 14 In that first attack Jonathan and his armour-bearer killed some twenty men in an area of about half an acre.*

Israel routs the Philistines

15 Then panic struck the whole army – those in the camp and field, and those in the outposts and raiding parties – and the ground shook. It was a panic sent by God.* 16 Saul’s lookouts at Gibeah in Benjamin saw the army melting away in all directions. 17 Then Saul said to the men who were with him, ‘Muster the forces and see who has left us.’ When they did, it was Jonathan and his armour-bearer who were not there. 18 Saul said to Ahijah, ‘Bring the ark of God.’ (At that time it was with the Israelites.)* 19 While Saul was talking to the priest, the tumult in the Philistine camp increased more and more. So Saul said to the priest, ‘Withdraw your hand.’ 20 Then Saul and all his men assembled and went to the battle. They found the Philistines in total confusion, striking each other with their swords. 21 Those Hebrews who had previously been with the Philistines and had gone up with them to their camp went over to the Israelites who were with Saul and Jonathan. 22 When all the Israelites who had hidden in the hill country of Ephraim heard that the Philistines were on the run, they joined the battle in hot pursuit. 23 So on that day the Lord saved Israel, and the battle moved on beyond Beth Aven.

Jonathan eats honey

24 Now the Israelites were in distress that day, because Saul had bound the people under an oath, saying, ‘Cursed be anyone who eats food before evening comes, before I have avenged myself on my enemies!’ So none of the troops tasted food. 25 The entire army entered the woods, and there was honey on the ground. 26 When they went into the woods, they saw the honey oozing out; yet no-one put his hand to his mouth, because they feared the oath. 27 But Jonathan had not heard that his father had bound the people with the oath, so he reached out the end of the staff that was in his hand and dipped it into the honeycomb. He raised his hand to his mouth, and his eyes brightened.* 28 Then one of the soldiers told him, ‘Your father bound the army under a strict oath, saying, “Cursed be anyone who eats food today!” That is why the men are faint.’ 29 Jonathan said, ‘My father has made trouble for the country. See how my eyes brightened when I tasted a little of this honey. 30 How much better it would have been if the men had eaten today some of the plunder they took from their enemies. Would not the slaughter of the Philistines have been even greater?’ 31 That day, after the Israelites had struck down the Philistines from Michmash to Aijalon, they were exhausted. 32 They pounced on the plunder and, taking sheep, cattle and calves, they butchered them on the ground and ate them, together with the blood. 33 Then someone said to Saul, ‘Look, the men are sinning against the Lord by eating meat that has blood in it.’ ‘You have broken faith,’ he said. ‘Roll a large stone over here at once.’ 34 Then he said, ‘Go out among the men and tell them, “Each of you bring me your cattle and sheep, and slaughter them here and eat them. Do not sin against the Lord by eating meat with blood still in it.” ’ So everyone brought his ox that night and slaughtered it there. 35 Then Saul built an altar to the Lord; it was the first time he had done this. 36 Saul said, ‘Let us go down and pursue the Philistines by night and plunder them till dawn, and let us not leave one of them alive.’ ‘Do whatever seems best to you,’ they replied. But the priest said, ‘Let us enquire of God here.’ 37 So Saul asked God, ‘Shall I go down and pursue the Philistines? Will you give them into Israel’s hand?’ But God did not answer him that day. 38 Saul therefore said, ‘Come here, all you who are leaders of the army, and let us find out what sin has been committed today. 39 As surely as the Lord who rescues Israel lives, even if the guilt lies with my son Jonathan, he must die.’ But not one of them said a word. 40 Saul then said to all the Israelites, ‘You stand over there; I and Jonathan my son will stand over here.’ ‘Do what seems best to you,’ they replied. 41 Then Saul prayed to the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘Why have you not answered your servant today? If the fault is in me or my son Jonathan, respond with Urim, but if the men of Israel are at fault,* respond with Thummim.’ Jonathan and Saul were taken by lot, and the men were cleared. 42 Saul said, ‘Cast the lot between me and Jonathan my son.’ And Jonathan was taken. 43 Then Saul said to Jonathan, ‘Tell me what you have done.’ So Jonathan told him, ‘I tasted a little honey with the end of my staff. And now I must die!’ 44 Saul said, ‘May God deal with me, be it ever so severely, if you do not die, Jonathan.’ 45 But the men said to Saul, ‘Should Jonathan die – he who has brought about this great deliverance in Israel? Never! As surely as the Lord lives, not a hair of his head shall fall to the ground, for he did this today with God’s help.’ So the men rescued Jonathan, and he was not put to death. 46 Then Saul stopped pursuing the Philistines, and they withdrew to their own land. 47 After Saul had assumed rule over Israel, he fought against their enemies on every side: Moab, the Ammonites, Edom, the kings* of Zobah, and the Philistines. Wherever he turned, he inflicted punishment on them.* 48 He fought valiantly and defeated the Amalekites, delivering Israel from the hands of those who had plundered them.

Saul’s family

49 Saul’s sons were Jonathan, Ishvi and Malki-Shua. The name of his elder daughter was Merab, and that of the younger was Michal. 50 His wife’s name was Ahinoam daughter of Ahimaaz. The name of the commander of Saul’s army was Abner son of Ner, and Ner was Saul’s uncle. 51 Saul’s father Kish and Abner’s father Ner were sons of Abiel. 52 All the days of Saul there was bitter war with the Philistines, and whenever Saul saw a mighty or brave man, he took him into his service.

1 Eines Tages sagte Jonatan, der Sohn Sauls, zu seinem jungen Waffenträger: »Komm, wir gehen zu dem Philisterposten dort drüben!« Seinem Vater verriet er nichts davon. 2 Saul befand sich zu diesem Zeitpunkt am äußersten Ende des Gebiets von Gibea unter dem Granatapfelbaum beim Dreschplatz. Er hatte etwa 600 Mann bei sich. 3 In seiner Begleitung war auch der Priester Ahija, der Sohn von Ikabods Bruder Ahitub; er war ein Enkel von Pinhas und Urenkel von Eli, der in Schilo dem HERRN als Priester gedient hatte. Ahija trug die Orakeltasche. Auch von den Männern Sauls wusste keiner, dass Jonatan weggegangen war. 4 An der Stelle, an der Jonatan das Tal überqueren wollte, ragte auf jeder Seite eine Felsspitze auf; man nannte die beiden Felsen Bozez und Senne.* 5 Der eine erhob sich wie ein Pfeiler im Norden, auf der Seite von Michmas, der andere im Süden, auf der Seite von Geba. 6 Jonatan sagte also zu seinem jungen Waffenträger: »Komm, wir gehen zu dem Posten dort drüben, zu diesen Unbeschnittenen! Vielleicht hilft uns der HERR; denn für ihn ist es nicht schwer, den Sieg zu schenken, ganz gleich, ob nun viele oder wenige kämpfen.« 7 »Nur zu«, sagte der Waffenträger; »tu, was du vorhast! Ich bin dabei, du kannst dich auf mich verlassen.« 8 Jonatan sagte: »Wir gehen auf sie zu, und zwar so, dass sie uns sehen müssen. 9 Wenn sie uns dann zurufen: ›Halt! Stehen bleiben, bis wir bei euch sind!‹, dann bleiben wir stehen, wo wir gerade sind, und steigen nicht zu ihnen hinauf. 10 Sagen sie aber: ›Kommt herauf zu uns!‹, so klettern wir hinauf. Das soll das Zeichen für uns sein, dass der HERR sie in unsere Hand gegeben hat.« 11 Sie gingen also und zeigten sich ganz offen dem feindlichen Posten. Als die Philister sie sahen, sagten sie zueinander: »Seht nur, da kommen ein paar Hebräer aus den Löchern, in die sie sich verkrochen haben!« 12 Sie riefen den beiden zu: »Kommt herauf zu uns! Wir haben ein Wörtchen mit euch zu reden!« Da sagte Jonatan zu seinem Waffenträger: »Mir nach! Der HERR hat sie in die Hand Israels gegeben!« 13 Jonatan kletterte auf allen vieren hinauf und sein Waffenträger hinter ihm her. Da fielen die Philister vor Jonatan einfach um, und der Waffenträger, der hinter ihm herging, tötete sie. 14 Bei diesem ersten Schlag gegen die Philister hatten Jonatan und sein Waffenträger auf kleinstem Raum* an die zwanzig Mann niedergemacht. 15 Alle Philister packte das Entsetzen – die im Lager und die im Gelände, das ganze Heer, auch die Wachtposten und alle, die zur Plünderung ausgezogen waren. Als dann auch noch die Erde bebte, brach unter ihnen eine Panik aus, die Gott geschickt hatte. 16 Die Späher Sauls in Gibea bemerkten die Unruhe im Lager der Philister. 17 Saul befahl seinen Leuten: »Seht nach, wer von uns fehlt!« Es stellte sich heraus, dass Jonatan und sein Waffenträger nicht da waren. 18 Da befahl Saul dem Priester Ahija: »Bring die Lade Gottes her!« Die Bundeslade war nämlich im Lager der Israeliten. 19 Aber während Saul noch mit Ahija sprach, steigerte sich der Tumult im Lager der Philister so sehr, dass Saul zu ihm sagte: »Nein, lass es!« 20 Saul und seine Leute sammelten sich und stürmten los zum Kampf. Als sie das feindliche Lager erreichten, sahen sie, dass dort einer gegen den andern kämpfte. Es herrschte eine ungeheure Verwirrung. 21 Die von den Hebräern, die bisher zu den Philistern gehalten hatten und auf deren Seite in den Kampf gezogen waren, wechselten jetzt die Front und schlossen sich den Israeliten unter der Führung von Saul und Jonatan an. 22 Als die Israeliten, die sich im Bergland von Efraïm versteckt hatten, von der Flucht der Philister hörten, setzten auch sie alle ihnen nach.

Sauls Gewissenhaftigkeit mindert den Sieg

23 So schenkte der HERR an diesem Tag Israel den Sieg. Der Kampf tobte damals bis über Bet-Awen hinaus. 24 Als die Israeliten zeitweise in Bedrängnis gerieten, drohte ihnen Saul und sagte: »Fluch über jeden, der vor Abend etwas isst – bevor ich mich an meinen Feinden gerächt habe!« Deshalb nahm keiner von den Leuten irgendetwas zu sich. 25 Zu dieser Jahreszeit gab es* überall in der Gegend wilden Honig. 26 Die Waben, auf die die Leute stießen, flossen über von Honig; aber keiner wagte davon zu kosten, denn sie fürchteten Sauls Fluch. 27 Jonatan wusste jedoch nichts von dem Fluch, mit dem sein Vater die Leute bedroht hatte. Er tauchte das Ende seines Stockes in eine Wabe und leckte den Honig ab. Sofort kam neues Leben in ihn.* 28 Einer der Männer stellte ihn zur Rede und sagte: »Dein Vater hat jeden mit einem Fluch bedroht, der heute etwas isst!« Weil Jonatan sah, wie erschöpft die Leute waren, 29 erwiderte er: »Mein Vater stürzt uns alle ins Unglück. Seht doch selbst, wie erfrischt ich bin, weil ich ein bisschen von dem Honig gegessen habe! 30 Wie viel größer wäre unser Sieg gewesen, wenn die Leute sich von dem Proviant gestärkt hätten, den sie von ihren Feinden erbeutet haben! Dann wäre die Niederlage der Philister noch viel größer geworden.« 31 Die Israeliten verfolgten die Philister an diesem Tag von Michmas bis nach Ajalon. Dann waren sie so erschöpft, 32 dass sie sich auf die Beutetiere stürzten; sie schlachteten Schafe, Rinder und Kälber, ließen das Blut auf die Erde fließen und hielten an derselben Stelle ihr Mahl. 33 Man meldete Saul: »Die Leute machen sich schuldig gegenüber dem HERRN; sie setzen sich über dem Blut hin und essen!« »Das ist ein schweres Unrecht«, rief Saul. »Wälzt sofort einen großen Stein her!« 34 Dann ordnete er an: »Geht überall herum und sagt den Leuten, jeder soll sein Rind und sein Schaf zu mir bringen und hier an diesem Stein schlachten. Dann können sie essen, ohne dem HERRN gegenüber schuldig zu werden, weil sie über dem Blut essen.« Da brachten alle in dieser Nacht ihre Tiere zu Saul und schlachteten sie dort. 35 Es war das erste Mal, dass Saul für den HERRN einen Altar gebaut hatte. 36 Dann sagte Saul zu den Männern: »Wir wollen noch in der Nacht den Philistern nachjagen! Wir wollen sie ausplündern und keiner von ihnen soll den nächsten Morgen erleben!« »Gut«, riefen sie, »mach alles so, wie du es für richtig hältst!« Der Priester aber wandte ein: »Wir wollen doch zuerst Gott fragen!« 37 Also fragte Saul: »Soll ich die Philister bis in die Ebene verfolgen? Wirst du sie in unsere Hand geben?« Aber Gott gab Saul keine Antwort. 38 Da rief Saul die Truppenführer zu sich und sagte: »Es ist heute irgendeine Schuld begangen worden. Ihr müsst herausfinden, was es ist. 39 Wer sich schuldig gemacht hat, muss sterben – und wenn es mein eigener Sohn Jonatan wäre. Das schwöre ich, so gewiss der HERR lebt, der Israel beisteht.« Aber niemand aus dem Volk meldete irgendeinen Verstoß. 40 Da sagte Saul: »Ihr alle stellt euch auf diese Seite, ich stelle mich mit Jonatan auf die andere.« »Tu, was du für richtig hältst«, erwiderte das Volk. 41 Dann rief Saul: »HERR, du Gott Israels, warum hast du mir heute nicht geantwortet? Sag es mir durch die heiligen Lose! Wenn die Schuld bei mir oder bei Jonatan liegt, dann lass das Los ›Urim‹ herauskommen, wenn sie aber beim Volk liegt, das Los ›Tummim‹!«* Das Los fiel auf Saul und Jonatan, und so war das Volk von der Schuld freigesprochen. 42 »Werft jetzt das Los zwischen mir und meinem Sohn«, befahl Saul. Da fiel das Los auf Jonatan. 43 »Was hast du getan?«, fragte ihn Saul. »Sag es mir!« »Ich habe mit der Spitze meines Stockes ein bisschen Honig gekostet«, antwortete Jonatan. »Ich bin bereit zu sterben.« 44 »Gott soll mich strafen, wenn ich dich leben lasse!«, sagte Saul. 45 Aber die Männer Israels baten für Jonatan: »Soll er sterben, nachdem er diesen großen Sieg für Israel errungen hat? Nie und nimmer! So gewiss der HERR lebt: Wir werden nicht zulassen, dass ihm auch nur ein Haar gekrümmt wird! Nur mit Gottes Hilfe hat er heute solche Taten vollbringen können.« So rettete das Volk Jonatan vor dem Tod. 46 Saul aber verfolgte die Philister nicht weiter, sondern kehrte um. So konnten sich die Philister unbehelligt in ihr Gebiet zurückziehen.

Sauls Kriege

47 Als König von Israel kämpfte Saul gegen alle seine Feinde ringsum: gegen die Moabiter, die Ammoniter, die Edomiter, die Könige von Zoba und die Philister. Gegen sie alle bewährte er sich als Retter Israels.* 48 Er war ein tapferer Mann, besiegte die Amalekiter und befreite die Israeliten von allen, die ihr Land ausplünderten.

Sauls Familie

49 Saul hatte drei Söhne: Jonatan, Jischwi* und Malkischua, und zwei Töchter; die ältere hieß Merab, die jüngere Michal. 50 Seine Frau hieß Ahinoam; sie war die Tochter von Ahimaaz. Zum Heerführer machte er Abner, den Sohn seines Onkels Ner. 51 Sauls Vater Kisch und Abners Vater Ner waren beide Söhne von Abiël. 52 Der Krieg mit den Philistern dauerte mit unverminderter Härte fort, solange Saul lebte. Darum zog Saul jeden tapferen und kriegstüchtigen Mann, den er gewinnen konnte, zu seiner Truppe ein.
