The ark brought to the temple

1 Then King Solomon summoned into his presence at Jerusalem the elders of Israel, all the heads of the tribes and the chiefs of the Israelite families, to bring up the ark of the Lord’s covenant from Zion, the City of David. 2 All the Israelites came together to King Solomon at the time of the festival in the month of Ethanim, the seventh month. 3 When all the elders of Israel had arrived, the priests took up the ark, 4 and they brought up the ark of the Lord and the tent of meeting and all the sacred furnishings in it. The priests and Levites carried them up, 5 and King Solomon and the entire assembly of Israel that had gathered about him were before the ark, sacrificing so many sheep and cattle that they could not be recorded or counted. 6 The priests then brought the ark of the Lord’s covenant to its place in the inner sanctuary of the temple, the Most Holy Place, and put it beneath the wings of the cherubim. 7 The cherubim spread their wings over the place of the ark and overshadowed the ark and its carrying poles. 8 These poles were so long that their ends could be seen from the Holy Place in front of the inner sanctuary, but not from outside the Holy Place; and they are still there today. 9 There was nothing in the ark except the two stone tablets that Moses had placed in it at Horeb, where the Lord made a covenant with the Israelites after they came out of Egypt. 10 When the priests withdrew from the Holy Place, the cloud filled the temple of the Lord. 11 And the priests could not perform their service because of the cloud, for the glory of the Lord filled his temple. 12 Then Solomon said, ‘The Lord has said that he would dwell in a dark cloud; 13 I have indeed built a magnificent temple for you, a place for you to dwell for ever.’ 14 While the whole assembly of Israel was standing there, the king turned round and blessed them. 15 Then he said: ‘Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, who with his own hand has fulfilled what he promised with his own mouth to my father David. For he said, 16 “Since the day I brought my people Israel out of Egypt, I have not chosen a city in any tribe of Israel to have a temple built so that my Name might be there, but I have chosen David to rule my people Israel.” 17 ‘My father David had it in his heart to build a temple for the Name of the Lord, the God of Israel. 18 But the Lord said to my father David, “You did well to have it in your heart to build a temple for my Name. 19 Nevertheless, you are not the one to build the temple, but your son, your own flesh and blood – he is the one who will build the temple for my Name.” 20 ‘The Lord has kept the promise he made: I have succeeded David my father and now I sit on the throne of Israel, just as the Lord promised, and I have built the temple for the Name of the Lord, the God of Israel. 21 I have provided a place there for the ark, in which is the covenant of the Lord that he made with our ancestors when he brought them out of Egypt.’

Solomon’s prayer of dedication

22 Then Solomon stood before the altar of the Lord in front of the whole assembly of Israel, spread out his hands towards heaven 23 and said: ‘Lord, the God of Israel, there is no God like you in heaven above or on earth below – you who keep your covenant of love with your servants who continue wholeheartedly in your way. 24 You have kept your promise to your servant David my father; with your mouth you have promised and with your hand you have fulfilled it – as it is today. 25 ‘Now Lord, the God of Israel, keep for your servant David my father the promises you made to him when you said, “You shall never fail to have a successor to sit before me on the throne of Israel, if only your descendants are careful in all they do to walk before me faithfully as you have done.” 26 And now, God of Israel, let your word that you promised your servant David my father come true. 27 ‘But will God really dwell on earth? The heavens, even the highest heaven, cannot contain you. How much less this temple I have built! 28 Yet give attention to your servant’s prayer and his plea for mercy, Lord my God. Hear the cry and the prayer that your servant is praying in your presence this day. 29 May your eyes be open towards this temple night and day, this place of which you said, “My Name shall be there,” so that you will hear the prayer your servant prays towards this place. 30 Hear the supplication of your servant and of your people Israel when they pray towards this place. Hear from heaven, your dwelling-place, and when you hear, forgive. 31 ‘When anyone wrongs their neighbour and is required to take an oath and they come and swear the oath before your altar in this temple, 32 then hear from heaven and act. Judge between your servants, condemning the guilty by bringing down on their heads what they have done, and vindicating the innocent by treating them in accordance with their innocence. 33 ‘When your people Israel have been defeated by an enemy because they have sinned against you, and when they turn back to you and give praise to your name, praying and making supplication to you in this temple, 34 then hear from heaven and forgive the sin of your people Israel and bring them back to the land you gave to their ancestors. 35 ‘When the heavens are shut up and there is no rain because your people have sinned against you, and when they pray towards this place and give praise to your name and turn from their sin because you have afflicted them, 36 then hear from heaven and forgive the sin of your servants, your people Israel. Teach them the right way to live, and send rain on the land you gave your people for an inheritance. 37 ‘When famine or plague comes to the land, or blight or mildew, locusts or grasshoppers, or when an enemy besieges them in any of their cities, whatever disaster or disease may come, 38 and when a prayer or plea is made by anyone among your people Israel – being aware of the afflictions of their own hearts, and spreading out their hands towards this temple – 39 then hear from heaven, your dwelling-place. Forgive and act; deal with everyone according to all they do, since you know their hearts (for you alone know every human heart), 40 so that they will fear you all the time they live in the land you gave our ancestors. 41 ‘As for the foreigner who does not belong to your people Israel but has come from a distant land because of your name – 42 for they will hear of your great name and your mighty hand and your outstretched arm – when they come and pray towards this temple, 43 then hear from heaven, your dwelling-place. Do whatever the foreigner asks of you, so that all the peoples of the earth may know your name and fear you, as do your own people Israel, and may know that this house I have built bears your Name. 44 ‘When your people go to war against their enemies, wherever you send them, and when they pray to the Lord towards the city you have chosen and the temple I have built for your Name, 45 then hear from heaven their prayer and their plea, and uphold their cause. 46 ‘When they sin against you – for there is no-one who does not sin – and you become angry with them and give them over to their enemies, who take them captive to their own lands, far away or near; 47 and if they have a change of heart in the land where they are held captive, and repent and plead with you in the land of their captors and say, “We have sinned, we have done wrong, we have acted wickedly”; 48 and if they turn back to you with all their heart and soul in the land of their enemies who took them captive, and pray to you towards the land you gave their ancestors, towards the city you have chosen and the temple I have built for your Name; 49 then from heaven, your dwelling-place, hear their prayer and their plea, and uphold their cause. 50 And forgive your people, who have sinned against you; forgive all the offences they have committed against you, and cause their captors to show them mercy; 51 for they are your people and your inheritance, whom you brought out of Egypt, out of that iron-smelting furnace. 52 ‘May your eyes be open to your servant’s plea and to the plea of your people Israel, and may you listen to them whenever they cry out to you. 53 For you singled them out from all the nations of the world to be your own inheritance, just as you declared through your servant Moses when you, Sovereign Lord, brought our ancestors out of Egypt.’ 54 When Solomon had finished all these prayers and supplications to the Lord, he rose from before the altar of the Lord, where he had been kneeling with his hands spread out towards heaven. 55 He stood and blessed the whole assembly of Israel in a loud voice, saying: 56 ‘Praise be to the Lord, who has given rest to his people Israel just as he promised. Not one word has failed of all the good promises he gave through his servant Moses. 57 May the Lord our God be with us as he was with our ancestors; may he never leave us nor forsake us. 58 May he turn our hearts to him, to walk in obedience to him and keep the commands, decrees and laws he gave our ancestors. 59 And may these words of mine, which I have prayed before the Lord, be near to the Lord our God day and night, that he may uphold the cause of his servant and the cause of his people Israel according to each day’s need, 60 so that all the peoples of the earth may know that the Lord is God and that there is no other. 61 And may your hearts be fully committed to the Lord our God, to live by his decrees and obey his commands, as at this time.’

The dedication of the temple

62 Then the king and all Israel with him offered sacrifices before the Lord. 63 Solomon offered a sacrifice of fellowship offerings to the Lord: twenty-two thousand cattle and a hundred and twenty thousand sheep and goats. So the king and all the Israelites dedicated the temple of the Lord. 64 On that same day the king consecrated the middle part of the courtyard in front of the temple of the Lord, and there he offered burnt offerings, grain offerings and the fat of the fellowship offerings, because the bronze altar that stood before the Lord was too small to hold the burnt offerings, the grain offerings and the fat of the fellowship offerings. 65 So Solomon observed the festival at that time, and all Israel with him – a vast assembly, people from Lebo Hamath to the Wadi of Egypt. They celebrated it before the Lord our God for seven days and seven days more, fourteen days in all. 66 On the following day he sent the people away. They blessed the king and then went home, joyful and glad in heart for all the good things the Lord had done for his servant David and his people Israel.

Der Tempel als Wohnung Gottes

1 Nun ließ König Salomo die Ältesten Israels, die Vertreter aller Stämme und Sippen, zu sich nach Jerusalem kommen. Sie sollten die Bundeslade des HERRN von der Davidsstadt auf dem Zionsberg in den Tempel hinaufbringen. 2 Auch alle Männer Israels kamen deshalb am Laubhüttenfest im siebten Monat, dem Monat Etanim, zu König Salomo. 3 Als die Ältesten versammelt waren, hoben die Priester die Bundeslade auf ihre Schultern 4 und trugen sie zum Tempel hinauf. Mithilfe der Leviten brachten sie auch das Heilige Zelt und alle seine Geräte dorthin. 5 König Salomo und die ganze Festgemeinde opferten vor der Bundeslade eine große Menge Schafe und Rinder, mehr als man zählen konnte. 6 Dann brachten die Priester die Lade des HERRN an den vorgesehenen Platz im hintersten Raum des Tempels, dem Allerheiligsten. Sie stellten sie unter die Flügel der Kerubim. 7 Die Kerubim hielten nämlich ihre Flügel über der Lade ausgebreitet und überspannten damit die Lade samt ihren Tragstangen. 8 Die Tragstangen waren so lang, dass ihre Enden nur zu sehen waren, wenn jemand direkt vor der Tür zum Allerheiligsten stand; vom Hauptraum des Heiligtums aus waren sie nicht zu sehen. In der Lade waren nur die beiden Steintafeln, die Mose am Berg Horeb hineingelegt hatte. Auf ihnen steht das Gesetz des Bundes, den der HERR mit den Israeliten geschlossen hat, als sie aus Ägypten kamen. Sie befinden sich noch heute dort. 10 Als die Priester den Tempel wieder verließen, erfüllte eine Wolke das ganze Heiligtum. 11 Die Priester konnten ihren Dienst nicht fortsetzen, denn die Herrlichkeit des HERRN erfüllte den Tempel. 12 Da betete Salomo: »HERR, du hast gesagt: ›Ich wohne im Wolkendunkel.‹* 13 Darum habe ich dir dieses prächtige Haus gebaut, eine Stätte, an der du für immer wohnen kannst.«

Worte zur Einweihung des Tempels

14 Dann drehte sich der König um und wandte sich der ganzen Gemeinde Israel zu. Er grüßte alle Versammelten mit einem Segenswunsch. 15 Dann sagte er: »Gepriesen sei der HERR, der Gott Israels! Er hat wahr gemacht, was er meinem Vater David versprochen hat, als er sagte: 16 ›In der ganzen Zeit, seit ich mein Volk Israel aus Ägypten in dieses Land brachte, habe ich in keinem der Stämme Israels eine Stadt erwählt, damit dort ein Wohnsitz für meinen Namen* errichtet wird. Aber dich habe ich als Herrscher über mein Volk Israel ausgewählt.‹ 17 Schon mein Vater David wollte dem HERRN, dem Gott Israels, einen Tempel bauen. 18 Aber der HERR sagte zu ihm: ›Ich freue mich über deine Absicht, für mich ein Haus zu bauen. 19 Aber nicht du, sondern erst dein Sohn, der dir noch geboren wird, soll mir dieses Haus bauen.‹* 20 Dieses Versprechen hat der HERR gehalten: Ich bin als Sohn meines Vaters David König geworden und habe den Wohnsitz für den Namen des HERRN, des Gottes Israels, gebaut. 21 In diesem Haus hat auch die Lade ihren Platz gefunden, in der die Tafeln des Bundes liegen, den der HERR mit unseren Vorfahren schloss, nachdem er sie aus Ägypten herausgeführt hatte.« 22 Dann trat Salomo vor den Augen der ganzen Gemeinde Israel vor den Altar des HERRN, breitete die Arme zum Himmel aus 23 und betete: »HERR, du Gott Israels! Weder im Himmel noch auf der Erde gibt es einen Gott wie dich. Du stehst zu deinem Bund und erweist deine Güte und Liebe allen, die dir mit ungeteiltem Herzen dienen. 24 So hast du an deinem Diener, meinem Vater David, gehandelt. Der heutige Tag ist Zeuge dafür, dass du dein Versprechen gehalten hast. 25 HERR, du Gott Israels, nun erfülle auch die andere Zusage, die du meinem Vater David, deinem Diener, gegeben hast: dass stets einer aus der Familie Davids auf dem Thron Israels sitzen wird – wenn seine Nachkommen dir nur genauso treu dienen wie er. 26 Gott Israels, lass doch in Erfüllung gehen, was du meinem Vater David, deinem Diener, versprochen hast! 27 Aber bist du nicht viel zu erhaben, um bei uns Menschen zu wohnen? Ist doch selbst der ganze weite Himmel* zu klein für dich, wie viel mehr dann dieses Haus, das ich gebaut habe. 28 HERR, mein Gott! Achte dennoch auf mein demütiges Gebet und höre auf die Bitte, die ich heute vor dich bringe: 29 Richte deinen Blick Tag und Nacht auf dieses Haus, von dem du gesagt hast: ›Hier soll mein Name wohnen!‹* Höre mich, wenn ich von hier aus zu dir rufe, 30 und höre auch die Gebete deines Volkes Israel! Wenn wir an dieser Stätte zu dir rufen, dann höre uns in deiner himmlischen Wohnung! Erhöre uns und vergib uns alle Schuld!«

Der Tempel als Ort des Gebets

31 »Wenn jemand verdächtigt wird, sich gegen einen anderen vergangen zu haben, und er wird hierher zu deinem Altar gebracht und unter den Fluch gestellt, der ihn im Fall der Schuld treffen soll, 32 dann höre du es im Himmel und sorge für Recht: Bestrafe ihn, wenn er schuldig ist, und lass sein böses Tun auf ihn selbst zurückfallen; aber verschone ihn, wenn er schuldlos ist, und lass seine Redlichkeit vor aller Augen offenbar werden! 33 Wenn die Israeliten, dein Volk, von Feinden besiegt werden, weil sie dir nicht gehorcht haben, und sie wenden sich dir wieder zu, preisen deinen Namen und bitten hier in deinem Haus um Erbarmen, 34 dann höre du es im Himmel: Vergib deinem Volk seine Schuld und bringe es wieder in das Land zurück, das du ihren Vorfahren gegeben hast! 35 Wenn kein Regen auf das Land fällt, weil seine Bewohner dir nicht gehorcht haben, und sie erkennen deine strafende Hand, kehren um und beten zu dir, wenden sich diesem Haus zu und preisen deinen Namen, 36 dann höre du es im Himmel: Vergib deinem Volk und seinen Königen ihre Schuld, zeige ihnen, was sie tun sollen, und lass es wieder regnen auf das Land, das du deinem Volk als bleibenden Besitz gegeben hast! 37 Wenn im Land eine Hungersnot ausbricht, wenn das Getreide durch Glutwinde, Krankheiten oder Schädlinge vernichtet wird, wenn der Feind ins Land einfällt oder Seuchen wüten, 38 dann höre das Gebet, das ein einzelner Mensch oder dein ganzes Volk an dich richtet. Wenn irgendjemand in der Not seines Herzens seine Arme betend zu diesem Haus hin ausbreitet, 39 dann höre du ihn in deiner himmlischen Wohnung: Vergib ihm seine Schuld und hilf ihm! Doch handle so, wie es jeder verdient. Du kennst ja die verborgensten Gedanken der Menschen und siehst ihnen ins Herz. 40 Dann werden sie dich stets ernst nehmen, die ganze Zeit, die sie in dem Land leben, das du unseren Vorfahren gegeben hast. 41 Wenn ein Ausländer, der nicht zu deinem Volk Israel zählt, der aber gehört hat, was für Taten du mit starker Hand und ausgestrecktem Arm für dein Volk vollbracht hast – wenn solch ein Mensch aus einem fernen Land kommt und im Anblick dieses Hauses zu dir betet, 43 dann höre ihn in deiner himmlischen Wohnung und erfülle seine Bitten! Alle Völker auf der Erde werden dann erkennen, dass du der wahre Gott bist, und werden dich genauso ehren, wie dein Volk Israel es tut. Und sie werden erkennen, dass du von diesem Haus, das ich für dich gebaut habe, Besitz ergriffen hast. 44 Wenn dein Volk in deinem Auftrag gegen Feinde in den Kampf zieht und dabei in der Ferne zu dir betet, den Blick zu der Stadt gerichtet, die du dir erwählt hast, und zu dem Haus, das ich deinem Namen* gebaut habe, 45 dann höre sein Gebet im Himmel und verhilf ihm zu seinem Recht! 46 Vielleicht kommt es auch so weit, dass die Israeliten sich gegen dich auflehnen – es gibt ja niemand, der nicht schuldig wird – und du dann zornig wirst und sie ihren Feinden preisgibst, die sie in ein fremdes Land verschleppen, in der Nähe oder in der Ferne. 47 Dort kommen sie vielleicht zur Einsicht und wenden sich dir zu und bekennen vor dir: ›Wir haben Unrecht getan, wir haben dir nicht gehorcht.‹ 48 Und wenn sie dann von ganzem Herzen zu dir umkehren und dort zu dir beten, den Blick gerichtet zu dem Land, das du ihren Vorfahren gegeben hast, zu der Stadt, die du dir erwählt hast, und zu dem Haus, das ich deinem Namen gebaut habe, 49 dann höre ihr Gebet in deiner himmlischen Wohnung und verhilf ihnen zu ihrem Recht! 50 Vergib ihnen alles, was sie gegen dich getan und womit sie sich gegen dich aufgelehnt haben. Verhilf ihnen dazu, dass ihre Feinde mit ihnen Erbarmen haben. 51 Sie sind doch dein Eigentum; sie sind dein Volk, das du aus Ägypten, aus diesem glühenden Schmelzofen, herausgeführt hast! 52 Sieh freundlich auf mich und auf dein ganzes Volk, HERR! Hilf uns, sooft wir in der Not zu dir rufen! 53 Du hast doch die Israeliten aus allen Völkern der Welt als dein Eigentum ausgewählt. Das hast du ihnen durch Mose, deinen Diener und Bevollmächtigten, sagen lassen, als du unsere Vorfahren aus Ägypten herausgeführt hast, HERR, du mächtiger Gott!«

Schlussgebet und Ermahnung des Volkes

54 Als Salomo sein Gebet beendet und dem HERRN alle diese Bitten vorgetragen hatte, stand er auf; er hatte nämlich beim Beten vor dem Altar des HERRN gekniet und die Arme zum Himmel ausgebreitet. 55 Er trat vor die versammelte Gemeinde Israel hin, segnete sie und rief allen zu: 56 »Wir wollen den HERRN, unseren Gott, preisen! Er hat Wort gehalten und seinem Volk Israel ein Land geschenkt, in dem es in Frieden leben kann. Die großartige Zusage, die er uns durch seinen Diener Mose gab, hat er Wort für Wort erfüllt; nichts ist ausgeblieben. 57 Wie er unseren Vorfahren beistand, so stehe er nun auch uns zur Seite! Er möge uns nie verlassen oder verstoßen. 58 Er schenke uns ein Herz, das ihm gehorsam ist, damit wir immer nach den Geboten und Weisungen leben, die er unseren Vorfahren gegeben hat. 59 Der HERR, unser Gott, möge sich Tag und Nacht an mein Gebet erinnern, an alle Bitten, die ich ihm heute vorgetragen habe. Er möge mir, seinem Diener, und seinem Volk Israel beistehen und uns Recht verschaffen Tag für Tag, wie es jeweils nötig ist. 60 Dann werden alle Völker der Welt erkennen, dass der HERR allein Gott ist und sonst niemand. 61 Ihr aber sollt mit ungeteiltem Herzen dem HERRN, unserem Gott, angehören und stets nach seinen Geboten und Weisungen leben, wie ihr es heute tut.«

Die ersten Feste im Tempel

62 Nun feierte der König zusammen mit der ganzen Festgemeinde die Einweihung des Tempels durch ein großes Opfer. Für das Opfermahl ließ er 22000 Rinder und 120000 Schafe schlachten. 64 Weil der Bronzealtar vor dem Haus des HERRN für die Menge der Opfer zu klein war, machte Salomo den ganzen Mittelteil des Vorhofs zum Opferaltar. Dort ließ er die Brand- und Speiseopfer verbrennen und auch die Fettstücke des Mahlopfers. 65 Sieben Tage lang feierten sie die Einweihung des Tempels.* Es war eine riesige Festgemeinde aus ganz Israel versammelt, von Lebo-Hamat im Norden bis zu dem Tal, das die ägyptische Grenze bildet, im Süden. 66 Am achten Tag entließ der König das Volk. Die Leute riefen dem König ihre Segenswünsche zu und kehrten nach Hause zurück. Sie waren voll Freude und Dank für alles, was der HERR für seinen Diener David und sein Volk Israel getan hatte.
