Elijah flees to Horeb

1 Now Ahab told Jezebel everything Elijah had done and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword. 2 So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah to say, ‘May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely, if by this time tomorrow I do not make your life like that of one of them.’ 3 Elijah was afraid* and ran for his life. When he came to Beersheba in Judah, he left his servant there, 4 while he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness. He came to a broom bush, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. ‘I have had enough, Lord,’ he said. ‘Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.’ 5 Then he lay down under the bush and fell asleep. All at once an angel touched him and said, ‘Get up and eat.’ 6 He looked around, and there by his head was some bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again. 7 The angel of the Lord came back a second time and touched him and said, ‘Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.’ 8 So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he travelled for forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God.

The Lord appears to Elijah

9 There he went into a cave and spent the night. And the word of the Lord came to him: ‘What are you doing here, Elijah?’ 10 He replied, ‘I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.’ 11 The Lord said, ‘Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.’ Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. 12 After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. 13 When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. Then a voice said to him, ‘What are you doing here, Elijah?’ 14 He replied, ‘I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.’ 15 The Lord said to him, ‘Go back the way you came, and go to the Desert of Damascus. When you get there, anoint Hazael king over Aram. 16 Also, anoint Jehu son of Nimshi king over Israel, and anoint Elisha son of Shaphat from Abel Meholah to succeed you as prophet. 17 Jehu will put to death any who escape the sword of Hazael, and Elisha will put to death any who escape the sword of Jehu. 18 Yet I reserve seven thousand in Israel – all whose knees have not bowed down to Baal and whose mouths have not kissed him.’

The call of Elisha

19 So Elijah went from there and found Elisha son of Shaphat. He was ploughing with twelve yoke of oxen, and he himself was driving the twelfth pair. Elijah went up to him and threw his cloak around him. 20 Elisha then left his oxen and ran after Elijah. ‘Let me kiss my father and mother goodbye,’ he said, ‘and then I will come with you.’ ‘Go back,’ Elijah replied. ‘What have I done to you?’ 21 So Elisha left him and went back. He took his yoke of oxen and slaughtered them. He burned the ploughing equipment to cook the meat and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he set out to follow Elijah and became his servant.

Elija will aufgeben

1 Ahab berichtete Isebel alles, was Elija getan und dass er alle Propheten Baals umgebracht hatte. 2 Da schickte Isebel einen Boten zu Elija und ließ ihm sagen: »Die Götter sollen mich strafen, wenn ich dich morgen um diese Zeit nicht ebenso umbringen werde, wie du meine Propheten umgebracht hast!« 3 Da packte Elija die Angst* und er floh, um sein Leben zu retten. In Beerscheba an der Südgrenze von Juda ließ er seinen Diener zurück 4 und wanderte allein weiter, einen Tag lang nach Süden in die Steppe hinein. Dann setzte er sich unter einen Ginsterstrauch und wünschte den Tod herbei. »HERR, ich kann nicht mehr«, sagte er. »Lass mich sterben! Ich bin nicht besser als meine Vorfahren.« 5 Dann legte er sich unter den Ginsterstrauch und schlief ein. Aber ein Engel kam, weckte ihn und sagte: »Steh auf und iss!« 6 Als Elija sich umschaute, entdeckte er hinter seinem Kopf ein frisches Fladenbrot und einen Krug mit Wasser. Er aß und trank und legte sich wieder schlafen. 7 Aber der Engel des HERRN weckte ihn noch einmal und sagte: »Steh auf und iss! Du hast einen weiten Weg vor dir!« 8 Elija stand auf, aß und trank und machte sich auf den Weg. Er war so gestärkt, dass er vierzig Tage und Nächte ununterbrochen wanderte, bis er zum Berg Gottes, dem Horeb, kam. 9 Dort ging er in die Höhle hinein und wollte sich darin schlafen legen. Da hörte er plötzlich die Stimme des HERRN: »Elija, was willst du hier?« 10 Elija antwortete: »HERR, ich habe mich leidenschaftlich für dich, den Gott Israels und der ganzen Welt,* eingesetzt; denn die Leute von Israel haben den Bund gebrochen, den du mit ihnen geschlossen hast; sie haben deine Altäre niedergerissen und deine Propheten umgebracht. Ich allein bin übrig geblieben und nun wollen sie auch mich noch töten.«

Gott offenbart sich Elija und gibt ihm einen Auftrag

11 Der HERR sagte: »Komm aus der Höhle und tritt auf den Berg vor mich hin! Ich werde an dir vorübergehen!« Da kam ein Sturm, der an der Bergwand rüttelte, dass die Felsbrocken flogen. Aber der HERR war nicht im Sturm. Als der Sturm vorüber war, kam ein starkes Erdbeben. Aber der HERR war nicht im Erdbeben. 12 Als das Beben vorüber war, kam ein loderndes Feuer. Aber der HERR war nicht im Feuer. Als das Feuer vorüber war, kam ein ganz leiser Hauch. 13 Da verhüllte Elija sein Gesicht mit dem Mantel, trat vor und stellte sich in den Eingang der Höhle. Eine Stimme fragte ihn: »Elija, was willst du hier?« 14 Er antwortete: »HERR, ich habe mich leidenschaftlich für dich, den Gott Israels und der ganzen Welt, eingesetzt, denn die Leute von Israel haben den Bund gebrochen, den du mit ihnen geschlossen hast; sie haben deine Altäre niedergerissen und deine Propheten umgebracht. Ich allein bin übrig geblieben, und nun wollen sie auch mich noch töten.« 15 Da befahl ihm der HERR: »Geh den Weg zurück, den du gekommen bist! Geh bis nach Damaskus und salbe dort Hasaël zum König von Syrien. 16 Darauf salbe Jehu, den Sohn von Nimschi, zum König von Israel und Elischa, den Sohn Schafats aus dem Dorf Abel-Mehola, zum Propheten, zu deinem Nachfolger. 17 Wer dem Schwert Hasaëls entrinnt, den wird Jehu töten, und wer sich vor Jehu retten kann, der kommt durch Elischa um. 18 Aber ich werde dafür sorgen, dass in Israel siebentausend Männer am Leben bleiben, alle, die nicht vor Baal niedergekniet sind und sein Bild nicht geküsst haben.«

Elija nimmt Elischa in seinen Dienst

19 Als Elija vom Berg Horeb zurückkam, traf er Elischa, den Sohn Schafats, beim Pflügen. Elf Knechte mit je einem Rindergespann gingen vor ihm her, er selbst führte das zwölfte Gespann. Im Vorbeigehen warf Elija ihm seinen Prophetenmantel über. 20 Sofort verließ Elischa sein Gespann, lief Elija nach und sagte zu ihm: »Lass mich noch meinen Vater und meine Mutter zum Abschied küssen, dann folge ich dir!« »Geh nur«, sagte Elija, »aber vergiss nicht, was ich mit dir gemacht habe!«* 21 Danach nahm Elischa die beiden Rinder seines Gespanns und schlachtete sie. Mit dem Holz des Jochs machte er ein Feuer, kochte das Fleisch und gab es seinen Leuten als Abschiedsmahl. Dann ging er mit Elija und wurde sein Diener.
