Faith in the incarnate Son of God

1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well. 2 This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands. 3 In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, 4 for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God. 6 This is the one who came by water and blood – Jesus Christ. He did not come by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. 7 For there are three that testify: 8 the* Spirit, the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement. 9 We accept human testimony, but God’s testimony is greater because it is the testimony of God, which he has given about his Son. 10 Whoever believes in the Son of God accepts this testimony. Whoever does not believe God has made him out to be a liar, because they have not believed the testimony God has given about his Son. 11 And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.

Concluding affirmations

13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life. 14 This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us – whatever we ask – we know that we have what we asked of him. 16 If you see any brother or sister commit a sin that does not lead to death, you should pray and God will give them life. I refer to those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death. I am not saying that you should pray about that. 17 All wrongdoing is sin, and there is sin that does not lead to death. 18 We know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin; the One who was born of God keeps them safe, and the evil one cannot harm them. 19 We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one. 20 We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true by being in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. 21 Dear children, keep yourselves from idols.

Der Sieg des Glaubens über die Welt

1 Wer glaubt, dass in Jesus der Sohn Gottes erschienen ist,* hat Gott zum Vater. Und wer den Vater liebt, der ihn gezeugt hat, wird auch alle anderen lieben, die vom selben Vater stammen. 2 Doch ob wir die Kinder Gottes auch wirklich lieben, das erkennen wir daran, dass wir Gott lieben, und das heißt: seine Gebote befolgen. 3 Die Liebe zu Gott ist nur echt, wenn wir nach seinen Geboten leben. Und seine Gebote sind nicht schwer zu befolgen; 4 denn alle, die Gott zum Vater haben, siegen über die Welt. Der Sieg über die Welt ist schon errungen – unser Glaube ist dieser Sieg! 5 Denn wer kann die Welt besiegen? Nur wer im Glauben daran festhält, dass Jesus der Sohn Gottes ist!

Drei Zeugen für Jesus Christus

6 Jesus Christus kam zu uns mit dem Wasser seiner Taufe und mit dem Blut seines Todes. Er kam nicht allein mit dem Wasser, sondern mit Wasser und mit Blut.* Der Geist bezeugt dies, und der Geist sagt die Wahrheit. 7 Es gibt also drei Zeugen: 8 den Geist, das Wasser und das Blut. Die Aussagen dieser drei Zeugen stimmen überein.

Gott selbst als Zeuge

9 Wenn wir schon die Zeugenaussage von Menschen annehmen, dann hat die Zeugenaussage Gottes noch viel mehr Gewicht. Es ist die Aussage, mit der Gott für seinen Sohn eingetreten ist. 10 Wer den Sohn Gottes anerkennt,* trägt dieses Zeugnis in seinem Herzen. Wer Gott nicht glaubt, macht ihn zum Lügner; denn er verwirft die Aussage, die Gott über seinen Sohn gemacht hat. 11 Diese besagt: Gott hat uns ewiges Leben gegeben, und wir erhalten dieses Leben durch seinen Sohn. 12 Wer den Sohn Gottes hat, hat auch das Leben. Wer aber den Sohn nicht hat, hat auch das Leben nicht.

Briefschluss

13 Ich habe euch diesen Brief geschrieben, damit euch aufs Neue bewusst wird: Ihr habt das ewige Leben, so gewiss ihr euch zu seinem Sohn Jesus Christus bekennt.*

Nachtrag: Das Gebet um Sündenvergebung

14 Wir sind Gott gegenüber voller Zuversicht, dass er uns hört, wenn wir ihn um etwas bitten, das seinem Willen entspricht. 15 Und wenn wir wissen, dass er uns hört bei allem, was wir bitten, dann wissen wir auch, dass wir schon haben, worum wir ihn bitten. 16 Wenn jemand sieht, dass sein Bruder oder seine Schwester* eine Sünde tut, eine solche, die nicht zum Tod führt, dann soll er zu Gott beten, und Gott wird dem Bruder oder der Schwester das Leben geben. Das betrifft die, deren Sünden nicht zum Tod führen. Es gibt eine Sünde, die den Tod bringt. In einem solchen Fall sage ich nicht, dass ihr beten sollt. 17 Jedes Unrecht ist Sünde. Aber nicht jede Sünde führt zum Tod. 18 Wir wissen: Wer Gott zum Vater hat, sündigt nicht; denn wer Gott zum Vater hat, nimmt sich in Acht, und der Teufel kann ihm nicht schaden. 19 Wir wissen, dass wir von Gott stammen; doch die ganze Welt ist in der Gewalt des Teufels. 20 Wir wissen aber: Der Sohn Gottes ist gekommen und hat uns die Augen geöffnet, damit wir den einzig wahren Gott erkennen. Wir sind mit dem einzig wahren Gott verbunden, so gewiss wir verbunden sind mit seinem Sohn Jesus Christus. Der ist der einzig wahre Gott, der ist das ewige Leben. 21 Meine Kinder, hütet euch vor den falschen Göttern!
