1 Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God – 2 the gospel he promised beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures 3 regarding his Son, who as to his earthly life* was a descendant of David, 4 and who through the Spirit of holiness was appointed the Son of God in power* by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord. 5 Through him we received grace and apostleship to call all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from* faith for his name’s sake. 6 And you also are among those Gentiles who are called to belong to Jesus Christ. 7 To all in Rome who are loved by God and called to be his holy people: Grace and peace to you from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

Paul’s longing to visit Rome

8 First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is being reported all over the world. 9 God, whom I serve in my spirit in preaching the gospel of his Son, is my witness how constantly I remember you 10 in my prayers at all times; and I pray that now at last by God’s will the way may be opened for me to come to you. 11 I long to see you so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to make you strong – 12 that is, that you and I may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith. 13 I do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters,* that I planned many times to come to you (but have been prevented from doing so until now) in order that I might have a harvest among you, just as I have had among the other Gentiles. 14 I am a debtor both to Greeks and non-Greeks, both to the wise and the foolish. 15 That is why I am so eager to preach the gospel also to you who are in Rome. 16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile. 17 For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed – a righteousness that is by faith from first to last,* just as it is written: ‘The righteous will live by faith.’

God’s wrath against sinful humanity

18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities – his eternal power and divine nature – have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse. 21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles. 24 Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25 They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshipped and served created things rather than the Creator – who is for ever praised. Amen. 26 Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. 27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error. 28 Furthermore, just as they did not think it worth while to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done. 29 They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; 31 they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy. 32 Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practise them.

1 Från Paulus, tjänare åt Jesus Kristus*. Jag är utsedd av Gud till att vara hans sändebud* och sprida det glada budskap som han för länge sedan lovade oss genom sina profeter i den heliga Skriften*. 3 Det är det glada budskapet om hans Son, Jesus Kristus, vår Herre, som kom till världen som människa och föddes in i kung Davids släkt. Men Jesus Kristus var inte bara människa. Han var samtidigt Guds Son, vilket Gud på ett mäktigt sätt bevisade genom att låta sin heliga Ande uppväcka honom från de döda. 5 Jesus Kristus har gett mig förmånen att få vara hans sändebud och berätta för alla folk om vad han har gjort för dem, så att de kan börja tro och lyda honom, och genom detta ge honom ära. 6 Och bland dessa som har fått inbjudan att tillhöra Jesus Kristus är också ni. 7 Till alla er i Rom som är älskade av Gud och har tackat ja till hans inbjudan att få tillhöra honom. Jag ber att Gud, vår Far, och Herren Jesus Kristus ska visa er godhet och fylla er med frid.

Paulus längtar efter församlingen

8 Först av allt vill jag säga att jag tackar Gud för er alla på grund av det som Jesus Kristus har gjort. Jag tackar Gud, eftersom man överallt talar om er tro. 9 Gud själv vet att jag ständigt ber för er, för det är honom jag tjänar av hela hjärtat när jag sprider det glada budskapet om hans Son. 10 Och en sak jag alltid ber om, är att jag ska få möjlighet att en dag resa till er – om Gud vill det. 11 Jag längtar efter att få träffa er och dela med mig av allt det goda som Gud genom sin Ande vill ge oss, så att ni blir styrkta i er tro. 12 Eller rättare sagt: så att jag kan uppmuntra er, och ni mig, genom den tro vi har gemensamt. 13 Jag vill att ni ska veta, kära syskon*, att jag flera gånger har tänkt komma till er, för att tron ska få samma goda resultat hos er som den har fått hos andra folk, men att det alltid har varit något som har hindrat mig. 14 Det ingår i mitt uppdrag att nå ut till människor både i vår kultur och i andra kulturer*, både till dem som är välutbildade och till vanliga enkla människor. 15 Därför vill jag så gärna komma till er i Rom, så att jag kan sprida det glada budskapet även där.

Kraften i det glada budskapet

16 Jag skäms inte för det glada budskapet om Jesus, för det handlar om Guds kraft att rädda var och en som tror. Judarna var de första som fick höra det, men det gäller för alla folk. 17 Det glada budskapet visar att vi genom att helt och fullt tro på Jesus kan bli skuldfria inför Gud. Det står ju i Skriften*: ”Den som tror blir skuldfri inför Gud och får leva.”*

Gud hatar synden

18 Men Gud visar sin vrede från himlen mot alla människor som lever i synd och ondska, och som hindrar andra från att känna till sanningen om honom. 19 De blir straffade därför att de inte vill lyda Gud trots att de redan känner till det man kan veta om honom. Gud har ju visat dem vem han är. 20 Ända sedan världens skapelse har människorna kunnat se Guds oändliga makt och förstå att han verkligen är Gud. Man kan inte se hans egenskaper, men man kan förstå dem genom att titta på allt han har skapat. Därför finns det ingen ursäkt för dem som inte vill lyda Gud! 21 Trots att människorna kände Gud, vägrade de att tillbe honom som Gud och tacka honom. Istället ägnade de sig åt egna fantasier om tillvaron, och deras förvirrade sinnen fylldes av andligt mörker. 22 De påstod sig vara visa, men blev istället fullkomliga dårar. 23 Istället för att tillbe Gud, han som har all makt och aldrig kan dö, tillbad de avgudar, bilder av vanliga dödliga människor och av alla slags djur, både sådana som flyger och sådana som lever på land. 24 Gud lät dem därför följa sina egna begär, så att de utförde avskyvärda och skamliga sexuella handlingar med varandra. 25 Istället för att tro på Gud, han som är sanningen, valde de att tro på lögner. De tillbad och tjänade det skapade istället för Skaparen. Han är den som ska hyllas för evigt. Ja, det är sant!* 26 Eftersom de trodde på lögner, lät Gud dem ägna sig åt homosexuella aktiviteter. Till och med kvinnorna övergav sin naturliga sexualitet och tillfredsställde sina behov med varandra. 27 Och männen slutade att ha naturliga sexuella förhållanden med kvinnor och började upptändas av begär till varandra, så att de utförde skamliga handlingar med andra män. På så sätt blev de själva orsaken till det rättvisa straff de fick för sin ondska. 28 Ja, eftersom de struntade i det de kände till om Gud, lät Gud dem följa sina egna onda tankar, så att de gjorde sådant man inte får göra. 29 Människorna fylldes av all slags ondska, elakhet, själviskhet, hat, avundsjuka, mordlust, aggressioner, svek och illvilja. 30 Ja, människor skvallrar och ljuger om andra. De hånar Gud. De är kaxiga, stolta och skrytsamma. De hittar ständigt nya sätt att göra det som är ont, de är olydiga mot sina föräldrar, 31 och de tänker aldrig på andra, utan bryter ständigt sina löften, eftersom de saknar både kärlek och medlidande. 32 De vet att Gud en dag ska straffa dem med döden för det de gör, men ändå fortsätter de. Och inte nog med det: de uppmuntrar andra som lever likadant.
