1 The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel: 2 for gaining wisdom and instruction; for understanding words of insight; 3 for receiving instruction in prudent behaviour, doing what is right and just and fair; 4 for giving prudence to those who are simple,* knowledge and discretion to the young – 5 let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance – 6 for understanding proverbs and parables, the sayings and riddles of the wise.* 7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools* despise wisdom and instruction.

Warning against the invitation of sinful men

8 Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching. 9 They are a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck. 10 My son, if sinful men entice you, do not give in to them. 11 If they say, ‘Come along with us; let’s lie in wait for innocent blood, let’s ambush some harmless soul; 12 let’s swallow them alive, like the grave, and whole, like those who go down to the pit; 13 we will get all sorts of valuable things and fill our houses with plunder; 14 cast lots with us; we will all share the loot’ – 15 my son, do not go along with them, do not set foot on their paths; 16 for their feet rush into evil, they are swift to shed blood. 17 How useless to spread a net where every bird can see it! 18 These men lie in wait for their own blood; they ambush only themselves! 19 Such are the paths of all who go after ill-gotten gain; it takes away the life of those who get it.

Wisdom’s rebuke

20 Out in the open wisdom calls aloud, she raises her voice in the public square; 21 on top of the wall* she cries out, at the city gate she makes her speech: 22 ‘How long will you who are simple love your simple ways? How long will mockers delight in mockery and fools hate knowledge? 23 Repent at my rebuke! Then I will pour out my thoughts to you, I will make known to you my teachings. 24 But since you refuse to listen when I call and no-one pays attention when I stretch out my hand, 25 since you disregard all my advice and do not accept my rebuke, 26 I in turn will laugh when disaster strikes you; I will mock when calamity overtakes you – 27 when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when disaster sweeps over you like a whirlwind, when distress and trouble overwhelm you. 28 ‘Then they will call to me but I will not answer; they will look for me but will not find me, 29 since they hated knowledge and did not choose to fear the Lord. 30 Since they would not accept my advice and spurned my rebuke, 31 they will eat the fruit of their ways and be filled with the fruit of their schemes. 32 For the waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them; 33 but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm.’

1 Dessa ordspråk skrevs av Salomo, Davids son och kung i Israel. 2 Han skrev dem för att undervisa sitt folk om hur de skulle leva och uppträda i olika situationer. 3 Han ville att de skulle vara förståndiga, rättvisa och uppriktiga i allt de gjorde. 4 "Jag vill göra de enkla människorna visa", sa han. "Jag vill visa de unga att de kan lösa sina problem med kunskap och förstånd. 5 Jag vill att de som redan är visa ska bli ännu visare och bli dugliga ledare genom att utforska den djupa innebörden i dessa sanningens guldkorn." 7 Hur blir en människa vis? Första steget är att lita på Herren och visa respekt för honom! Bara människor utan förnuft vägrar att ta emot undervisning. Lyssna till dina föräldrar! Vad du lär dig av dem ska komma dig väl till pass i livet. Det kommer att ge dig stor ära. 10 Om de ogudaktiga säger till dig: "Kom och bli en av oss", så vänd dem ryggen! 11 "Vi ska lägga oss i bakhåll och råna och döda folk", säger de. 12 "Vi ska behandla goda och onda på samma sätt. 13 Vilket byte vi kommer att få! Vi kommer att bli rika! 14 Kom med oss, så ska vi dela allt lika." 15 Gör det inte, min son! Håll dig långt borta från sådana människor, 16 för brott är det enda de har i huvudet, och de drar sig inte för att döda. 17 När en fågel upptäcker att du tänker fånga den med ett nät, håller den sig borta, 18 men det gör inte sådana människor. Därför faller de i sin egen grop. De lägger ut snaror för sina egna liv. 19 En våldsam död är det öde som väntar alla dem som ägnar sig åt våld.

Vishetens röst

20 Visheten ropar högt på gatorna för att man ska lyssna. 21 Hon ropar till folket på gator och torg och varhelst de samlas: 22 "Era stollar", ropar hon, "hur länge ska ni fortsätta att bete er som dårar? Hur länge ska ni håna visheten och kämpa mot sanningen? 23 Kom hit och lyssna till mig! Jag ska ge er goda råd och dela med mig av min kunskap till er. 24 Jag har ropat på er ofta, men ni har inte lyssnat till mig. Jag har försökt hjälpa er, men ni har alltid avvisat mig. 25 Ni har nonchalerat mina råd och min tillrättavisning. 26 En dag kommer olycka över er, och då ska jag skratta åt er! Jag ska håna er när ni råkar illa ut! 27 När fruktan griper er och när svårigheterna är större än vad ni kan bära, 28 då kommer jag inte att svara på era rop om hjälp. Då kommer det att vara för sent, hur ivrigt ni än söker mig. 29 Ni blundade för sanningen och valde att inte tillbe och lita på Herren. 30 Ni vände mig ryggen och avvisade mina råd. 31 Därför får ni vad ni förtjänar och måste ta konsekvenserna av ert handlande. 32 Ni vände er bort från mig, och er självbelåtenhet blir er död. 33 Men alla som lyssnar till mig ska leva i frid och trygghet och behöver inte vara rädda för något."
