Cities of refuge

1 Then the Lord said to Joshua:

2 ‘Tell the Israelites to designate the cities of refuge, as I instructed you through Moses,

3 so that anyone who kills a person accidentally and unintentionally may flee there and find protection from the avenger of blood.

4 When they flee to one of these cities, they are to stand in the entrance of the city gate and state their case before the elders of that city. Then the elders are to admit the fugitive into their city and provide a place to live among them.

5 If the avenger of blood comes in pursuit, the elders must not surrender the fugitive, because the fugitive killed their neighbour unintentionally and without malice aforethought.

6 They are to stay in that city until they have stood trial before the assembly and until the death of the high priest who is serving at that time. Then they may go back to their own home in the town from which they fled.’

7 So they set apart Kedesh in Galilee in the hill country of Naphtali, Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim, and Kiriath Arba (that is, Hebron) in the hill country of Judah.

8 East of the Jordan (on the other side from Jericho) they designated Bezer in the wilderness on the plateau in the tribe of Reuben, Ramoth in Gilead in the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan in the tribe of Manasseh.

9 Any of the Israelites or any foreigner residing among them who killed someone accidentally could flee to these designated cities and not be killed by the avenger of blood prior to standing trial before the assembly.

Fristäder utses

1 Herren sa till Josua:

2 "Säg till Israels folk att utse de fristäder som jag gav Mose instruktioner om.

3 Om en person har dödat någon oavsiktligt, ska han kunna fly till någon av dessa städer och känna sig säker där, så att inte den dödes släktingar kan komma för att hämnas.

4 När någon som oavsiktligt dödat en annan flyr till en sådan stad, ska han ta kontakt med de ledande i staden och förklara för dem vad som hänt, och då måste de ta emot honom och låta honom bo där.

5 Om en släkting till den som blivit dödad kommer för att hämnas, får den skyldige inte utlämnas, eftersom det var en olyckshändelse och inte ett överlagt mord.

6 Mannen som förorsakat olyckan måste stanna kvar i fristaden tills han stått inför rätta och bo kvar där tills den överstepräst som var i tjänst när olyckan inträffade, har dött. Sedan är han fri att vända tillbaka till sin egen stad och sitt hem.

7 De städer som utsågs till fristäder var Kedes i Galileen i Naftalis bergsbygd, Sikem i Efraims bergsbygd och Kirjat-Arba (också känd som Hebron) i Judas bergsbygd.

8 Herren gav också instruktioner om att tre sådana städer skulle utses för detta ändamål på östra sidan av Jordan. Det blev Beser i öknen på slätten som tillhörde Rubens stam, Ramot i Gilead inom Gads stams område och Golan i Basan inom Manasses område.

9 Dessa fristäder var till både för israeliterna själva och för övriga folk som bodde bland dem. Den som hade vållat någons död kunde fly dit för att ställas inför rätta i stället för att bli utsatt för den dödes familjs hämnd.
