1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, 2 To God’s holy people in Colossae, the faithful brothers and sisters* in Christ: Grace and peace to you from God our Father.*

Thanksgiving and prayer

3 We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, 4 because we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love you have for all God’s people – 5 the faith and love that spring from the hope stored up for you in heaven and about which you have already heard in the true message of the gospel 6 that has come to you. In the same way, the gospel is bearing fruit and growing throughout the whole world – just as it has been doing among you since the day you heard it and truly understood God’s grace. 7 You learned it from Epaphras, our dear fellow servant,* who is a faithful minister of Christ on our* behalf, 8 and who also told us of your love in the Spirit. 9 For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives,* 10 so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, 11 being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, 12 and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you* to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light. 13 For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

The supremacy of the Son of God

15 The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. 19 For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross. 21 Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of* your evil behaviour. 22 But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation – 23 if you continue in your faith, established and firm, and do not move from the hope held out in the gospel. This is the gospel that you heard and that has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven, and of which I, Paul, have become a servant.

Paul’s labour for the church

24 Now I rejoice in what I am suffering for you, and I fill up in my flesh what is still lacking in regard to Christ’s afflictions, for the sake of his body, which is the church. 25 I have become its servant by the commission God gave me to present to you the word of God in its fullness – 26 the mystery that has been kept hidden for ages and generations, but is now disclosed to the Lord’s people. 27 To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. 28 He is the one we proclaim, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone fully mature in Christ. 29 To this end I strenuously contend with all the energy Christ so powerfully works in me.

1 Från Paulus, som genom Guds vilja är sändebud* åt Jesus Kristus*. Min medarbetare Timotheos är med och sänder sina hälsningar. 2 Till våra syskon* i Kolossai som tillhör Gud och tror på Kristus. Vi ber att Gud, vår Far, ska visa er godhet och fylla er med frid.

Paulus tackar Gud för församlingens tro

3 Vi tackar alltid Gud, vår Herre Jesus Kristus Far, när vi ber för er, 4 för vi har hört om er tro på Jesus Kristus och om den kärlek ni visar alla de troende. 5 Ni har ju ett hopp om att Gud till slut ska rädda er för evigt. Och det hoppet har ni haft ända sedan ni fick höra det sanna budskapet om Jesus. 6 Detta budskap nådde er och sprids nu över hela världen. Överallt förvandlar det människor, på samma sätt som ni blev förvandlade den dag ni fick höra det och förstod att Gud i sin godhet verkligen förlåter oss våra synder. 7 Det var vår käre medarbetare Epafras som berättade dessa goda nyheter för er, han som troget tjänar Kristus för att hjälpa er*. 8 Det var också han som talade om för oss vilken kärlek Guds Ande har gett er till andra människor.

Paulus ber för församlingen

9 Ända sedan vi först hörde talas om er, har vi därför bett för er. Vi ber att Gud ska hjälpa er att veta vad han vill, och att hans Ande ska ge er vishet och förstånd, 10 så att ni kan leva på ett sätt som är värdigt Herren Gud. Vi ber att ni ska göra Herren glad genom alla slags goda gärningar, och att ni för varje dag ska lära känna honom bättre. 11 Ja, Herren ska styrka er genom sin härliga kraft, så att ni kan vara glada, uthålliga och tålmodiga vad som än möter er. 12 Tacka alltid Gud, vår Far, som har gjort det möjligt för er att få del av det arv som väntar alla som tillhör honom och lever i ljuset. 13 Han har räddat oss undan mörkrets härskare och låter oss få tillhöra hans älskade Son. 14 Genom att Sonen betalade straffet för våra synder, har vi köpts fria från vårt slaveri och har fått förlåtelse.

Jesus Kristus är Herre över allting

15 Jesus Kristus är den synliga bilden av Gud, han som är osynlig. Kristus står över allt skapat,* 16 för Gud lät honom skapa allt som finns i himlen och på jorden, både det vi kan se och det vi inte kan se, alla höga och väldiga änglar, härskare och makter.* Allt är skapat av Kristus och finns till för att ära honom. 17 Han finns* till före allt annat, och hans makt håller ihop hela skapelsen. 18 Kristus är också huvudet för sin kropp, det vill säga församlingen. Han är alltings början, den förste som uppstod från de döda, och därför är han den främste av alla. 19 Gud lät nämligen sin fullhet*, alla sina egenskaper och hela sin kraft, finnas hos Sonen. 20 Och genom att Sonen offrade sitt blod på korset och tog vårt straff, har Gud slutit fred med människorna. Ja, hela skapelsen är försonad med Gud, både det som finns på jorden och det som finns i himlen. 21 Detta gäller också er, som hade vänt Gud ryggen. Ni var hans fiender, eftersom både era tankar och era handlingar var onda. 22 Men nu är ni försonade med Gud och har blivit hans vänner, genom att Kristus blev människa och dog för att ta ert straff. Ja, nu tillhör ni Gud och kan stå inför honom utan synd och skuld, 23 om ni bara håller fast vid er tro på Kristus. Tron är den säkra grunden för ert liv, så låt inget rubba tron och ta ifrån er det hopp om slutlig räddning som ni hörde om i det glada budskapet om Jesus. Detta budskap sprids nu över hela världen, och jag, Paulus, tjänar Gud genom att föra det vidare.

Paulus arbete för församlingen

24 Nu är jag glad över att få lida för er skull. Och ännu återstår en del av det lidande som Kristus visade mig att jag skulle få gå igenom för församlingen, hans kropp.* 25 Gud har nämligen gett mig i uppdrag att arbeta för församlingen genom att sprida hans budskap till er som inte är judar. 26 Och detta budskap från Gud är hans hemliga* plan, som har legat dold för många generationer sedan tidens början. Men nu har Gud visat den för alla dem som tillhör honom. 27 Han har låtit dem förstå sin rika och härliga hemlighet: att alla jordens folk kan få gemenskap med Kristus och ha samma hopp om en evig härlighet tillsammans med Gud. 28 Därför sprider vi budskapet om Kristus överallt dit vi kommer. Vi förmanar alla människor och undervisar dem på ett så vist sätt som möjligt, så att vi kan föra fram dem alla inför Gud som människor med en stark och mogen tro, tack vare deras gemenskap med Kristus. 29 Det är det målet jag arbetar och kämpar för, med den mäktiga kraft som Kristus låter verka genom mig.
