1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, in keeping with the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus,

2 To Timothy, my dear son: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

Thanksgiving

3 I thank God, whom I serve, as my ancestors did, with a clear conscience, as night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers.

4 Recalling your tears, I long to see you, so that I may be filled with joy.

5 I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.

Appeal for loyalty to Paul and the gospel

6 For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands.

7 For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.

8 So do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner. Rather, join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God.

9 He has saved us and called us to a holy life – not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time,

10 but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Saviour, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.

11 And of this gospel I was appointed a herald and an apostle and a teacher.

12 That is why I am suffering as I am. Yet this is no cause for shame, because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him until that day.

13 What you heard from me, keep as the pattern of sound teaching, with faith and love in Christ Jesus.

14 Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you – guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us.

Examples of disloyalty and loyalty

15 You know that everyone in the province of Asia has deserted me, including Phygelus and Hermogenes.

16 May the Lord show mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, because he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of my chains.

17 On the contrary, when he was in Rome, he searched hard for me until he found me.

18 May the Lord grant that he will find mercy from the Lord on that day! You know very well in how many ways he helped me in Ephesus.

2 Till Timotheos, min käre son*.Jag ber att Gud Fadern och Jesus Kristus, vår Herre, ska visa dig godhet och omsorg och fylla dig med frid.

Var trogen i din uppgift

3 Jag tackar Gud för dig, Timotheos. Dag och natt påminner jag honom om att ta hand om dig då jag ber till honom. Han är den Gud som jag tjänar med rena motiv, precis som mina förfäder gjorde.

4 Jag minns dina tårar vid vårt avsked och jag längtar efter dig. Tänk vad det skulle vara roligt att få träffas igen!

5 Jag minns också den uppriktiga tro du har på Jesus, samma tro som fanns hos din mormor Lois och din mamma Eunike. Jag har förstått att samma starka tro nu finns i dig.

6 Därför vill jag påminna dig om att blåsa liv i den förmåga Gud gav dig genom sin Ande, när jag la händerna på dig och invigde dig till din uppgift.

7 Den Ande Gud har gett oss gör oss ju inte rädda och försiktiga, utan fyller oss med kraft, kärlek och självbehärskning.

8 Därför behöver du inte skämmas för att berätta för andra om vår Herre Jesus, och inte heller skämmas över mig som sitter i fängelse för hans skull. Var beredd att lida för det glada budskapet om Jesus du också, för Gud ska ge dig kraft.

9 Gud har räddat oss och inbjudit oss att få tillhöra honom. Men det var inte på grund av våra goda gärningar, utan därför att han i sin godhet, redan före tidens början, hade bestämt att vi skulle få förlåtelse genom Jesus Kristus.

10 Och denna kärlek och förlåtelse från Gud, som vi inte har gjort oss förtjänta av, avslöjades för oss då Jesus Kristus kom till jorden för att rädda oss. Jesus har brutit dödens makt och genom tron på honom får vi evigt liv. Detta är det glada budskap

11 som jag har utsetts att vara sändebud för, så att jag kan sprida denna sanning och undervisa andra.

12 Det är också därför som jag får lida. Men jag skäms inte för mitt lidande, för jag vet vem jag tror på, och jag är säker på att han som gett mig detta budskap att sprida, också kan bevara det ända till domens dag.

13 Ta det som du har hört från mig som modell för en sund undervisning. Håll fast vid tron på Jesus Kristus och den kärlek vi får uppleva i hans gemenskap.

14 Låt Guds heliga Ande som bor i oss hjälpa dig att bevara det goda budskap som Gud har gett dig att sprida.

15 Som du vet har alla de troende i provinsen Asien* svikit mig, även Fygelos och Hermogenes.

16 Men jag ber att Herren Jesus ska vara god mot Onesiforos och alla i hans hus, för han har inte skämts över att besöka mig i fängelset utan har ofta uppmuntrat mig.

17 När han kom till Rom letade han efter mig överallt tills han hittade mig.

18 Dessutom var han till enorm hjälp i Efesos, det vet du bättre än någon annan. Ja, jag ber att Herren Jesus ska visa nåd mot honom på domens dag.
