1And now, brothers and sisters, we want you to know about the grace that God has given the Macedonian churches.2In the midst of a very severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity.3For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own,4they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the Lord’s people.5And they exceeded our expectations: they gave themselves first of all to the Lord, and then by the will of God also to us.6So we urged Titus, just as he had earlier made a beginning, to bring also to completion this act of grace on your part.7But since you excel in everything – in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in the love we have kindled in you* – see that you also excel in this grace of giving.8I am not commanding you, but I want to test the sincerity of your love by comparing it with the earnestness of others.9For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.10And here is my judgment about what is best for you in this matter. Last year you were the first not only to give but also to have the desire to do so.11Now finish the work, so that your eager willingness to do it may be matched by your completion of it, according to your means.12For if the willingness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has, not according to what one does not have.13Our desire is not that others might be relieved while you are hard pressed, but that there might be equality.14At the present time your plenty will supply what they need, so that in turn their plenty will supply what you need. The goal is equality,15as it is written: ‘The one who gathered much did not have too much, and the one who gathered little did not have too little.’
Titus sent to receive the collection
16Thanks be to God, who put into the heart of Titus the same concern I have for you.17For Titus not only welcomed our appeal, but he is coming to you with much enthusiasm and on his own initiative.18And we are sending along with him the brother who is praised by all the churches for his service to the gospel.19What is more, he was chosen by the churches to accompany us as we carry the offering, which we administer in order to honour the Lord himself and to show our eagerness to help.20We want to avoid any criticism of the way we administer this liberal gift.21For we are taking pains to do what is right, not only in the eyes of the Lord but also in the eyes of man.22In addition, we are sending with them our brother who has often proved to us in many ways that he is zealous, and now even more so because of his great confidence in you.23As for Titus, he is my partner and fellow worker among you; as for our brothers, they are representatives of the churches and an honour to Christ.24Therefore show these men the proof of your love and the reason for our pride in you, so that the churches can see it.

Insamlingen till de troende i Jerusalem
1Nu vill jag berätta för er, kära syskon, vad Gud i sin godhet har gjort för församlingarna i Makedonien.2Trots att de har gått igenom många svåra prövningar och lever i yttersta fattigdom, har de varit mycket glada över att kunna ge till andra.3Ja, jag kan intyga att de har gett allt de hade råd med, och mer därtill. Helt frivilligt,4kom de till mig och tiggde och bad om att få vara med och hjälpa de troende i Jerusalem.5Men de gav inte bara en summa pengar, så som jag hade väntat mig. Nej, de var också beredda att lyda först och främst Herren Jesus, men även mig, eftersom de ville följa Guds vilja.6När jag alltså såg hur villiga församlingarna i Makedonien var att hjälpa till, bad jag Titus att resa tillbaka till er, så att ni kunde samla in resten av er kärleksgåva till de troende. Det var ju Titus som började insamlingen hos er.7Ni korinthier har fått så många förmågor från Gud. Ni har en stark tro, ni är duktiga på att tala, ni känner väl till Guds budskap, ni är hängivna och fulla av kärlek till oss*. Se nu till att ni även visar prov på er förmåga att ge till andra.8Men det är ingen befallning jag ger er. Jag vill bara tala om hur ivriga andra är att ge, så att ni kan bevisa att er kärlek är lika stor.9Låt er också inspireras av den godhet och kärlek vår Herre Jesus Kristus visade. Han lämnade ju Guds rikedomar, och blev fattig för er skull. Och genom hans fattigdom, får ni ärva Guds rikedomar.10Jag föreslår därför att ni avslutar den insamling som ni själva var med och tog initiativet till för ett år sedan. Ni var de första som började samla in pengar, men se nu till att ni är lika ivriga att ge på slutet som ni var i början. Ge så mycket som ni har råd med.12Om ni bara är villiga att ge, spelar det mindre roll hur stor gåvan är. Gud kräver inte att ni ska ge mer än ni har råd med.13Det är ju inte meningen att de andra plötsligt ska leva i överflöd, medan ni får det svårt. Nej, det handlar om att fördela våra tillgångar rättvist.14Just nu är det ni som lever i överflöd och kan hjälpa andra. En annan gång är det tvärtom. På det sättet får alla allt vad de behöver.15Det blir precis som det står i Skriften*: ”Den som samlade mycket hade inte för mycket, och den som samlade litet hade inte för lite.”*
Titus och hans reskamrater
16Jag tackar Gud för att han har gjort Titus lika ivrig att hjälpa er som jag själv är.17Han svarade inte bara ja när jag frågade om han ville resa till er, utan var genast villig att ge sig iväg.18Jag lät också en annan troende man resa med honom, en som är uppskattad av alla församlingar här, eftersom han har gjort mycket för att sprida budskapet om Jesus.19Samma man har också blivit utvald av församlingarna här att resa med mig till Jerusalem när gåvan ska överlämnas. Den resan gör jag för att ära Herren Jesus och för att visa min iver att hjälpa till.20Genom att ta med mig en annan troende, undviker jag att bli anklagad för att ha förskingrat något från denna stora gåva.21Gud vet att jag är ärlig, men jag vill också att andra ska förstå det.22Samtidigt med Titus skickade jag också en tredje person till er, en man som på många sätt har visat mig hur hängiven han är. Och han var nu ivrigare än vanligt, eftersom han litade på att ni skulle bidra med en stor gåva till de troende.23Om någon undrar över dessa tre, så är Titus min medarbetare som har kommit för att hjälpa er. De andra två är utsända från församlingarna här, och ärar Kristus med sina liv.
Ge rikligt och av kärlek
24När dessa tre kommer till er, omsätt då er kärlek i praktisk handling, så att de andra församlingarna ser hur rätt jag hade när jag skröt över er.
