A woman pours perfume on Jesus at Bethany

1 The Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread were only two days away. The chief priests and the teachers of the law were plotting to arrest Jesus secretly. They wanted to kill him. 2 ‘But not during the feast,’ they said. ‘The people may stir up trouble.’ 3 Jesus was in Bethany. He was at the table in the home of Simon, who had a skin disease. A woman came with a special sealed jar. It contained very expensive perfume made out of pure nard. She broke the jar open and poured the perfume on Jesus’ head. 4 Some of the people there became angry. They said to one another, ‘Why waste this perfume? 5 It could have been sold for more than a year’s pay. The money could have been given to poor people.’ So they found fault with the woman. 6 ‘Leave her alone,’ Jesus said. ‘Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. 7 You will always have poor people with you. You can help them any time you want to. But you will not always have me. 8 She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body to prepare me to be buried. 9 What I’m about to tell you is true. What she has done will be told anywhere the good news is preached all over the world. It will be told in memory of her.’ 10 Judas Iscariot was one of the 12 disciples. He went to the chief priests to hand Jesus over to them. 11 They were delighted to hear that he would do this. They promised to give Judas money. So he watched for the right time to hand Jesus over to them.

The Last Supper

12 It was the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread. That was the time to sacrifice the Passover lamb. Jesus’ disciples asked him, ‘Where do you want us to go and prepare for you to eat the Passover meal?’ 13 So he sent out two of his disciples. He told them, ‘Go into the city. A man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him. 14 He will enter a house. Say to its owner, “The Teacher asks, ‘Where is my guest room? Where can I eat the Passover meal with my disciples?’ ” 15 He will show you a large upstairs room. It will have furniture and will be ready. Prepare for us to eat there.’ 16 The disciples left and went into the city. They found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover meal. 17 When evening came, Jesus arrived with the 12 disciples. 18 While they were at the table eating, Jesus said, ‘What I’m about to tell you is true. One of you who is eating with me will hand me over to my enemies.’ 19 The disciples became sad. One by one they said to him, ‘Surely you don’t mean me?’ 20 ‘It is one of you,’ Jesus replied. ‘It is the one who dips bread into the bowl with me. 21 The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But how terrible it will be for the one who hands over the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.’ 22 While they were eating, Jesus took bread. He gave thanks and broke it. He handed it to his disciples and said, ‘Take it. This is my body.’ 23 Then he took a cup. He gave thanks and handed it to them. All of them drank from it. 24 ‘This is my blood of the covenant,’ he said to them. ‘It is poured out for many. 25 What I’m about to tell you is true. I won’t drink wine with you again until the day I drink it in God’s kingdom.’ 26 Then they sang a hymn and went out to the Mount of Olives.

Jesus says that the disciples will turn away

27 ‘You will all turn away,’ Jesus told the disciples. ‘It is written, ‘ “I will strike the shepherd down. Then the sheep will be scattered.” 28 But after I rise from the dead, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.’ 29 Peter said, ‘All the others may turn away. But I will not.’ 30 ‘What I’m about to tell you is true,’ Jesus answered. ‘It will happen today, in fact tonight. Before the cockerel crows twice, you yourself will say three times that you don’t know me.’ 31 But Peter would not give in. He said, ‘I may have to die with you. But I will never say I don’t know you.’ And all the others said the same thing.

Jesus prays in Gethsemane

32 Jesus and his disciples went to a place called Gethsemane. Jesus said to them, ‘Sit here while I pray.’ 33 He took Peter, James and John along with him. He began to be very upset and troubled. 34 ‘My soul is very sad. I feel close to death,’ he said to them. ‘Stay here. Keep watch.’ 35 He went a little further. Then he fell to the ground. He prayed that, if possible, the hour might pass by him. 36 ‘Abba, Father,’ he said, ‘everything is possible for you. Take this cup of suffering away from me. But let what you want be done, not what I want.’ 37 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. ‘Simon’, he said to Peter, ‘are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour? 38 Watch and pray. Then you won’t fall into sin when you are tempted. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak.’ 39 Once more Jesus went away and prayed the same thing. 40 Then he came back. Again he found them sleeping. They couldn’t keep their eyes open. They did not know what to say to him. 41 Jesus returned the third time. He said to them, ‘Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour has come. Look! The Son of Man is about to be handed over to sinners. 42 Get up! Let us go! Here comes the one who is handing me over to them!’

Jesus is arrested

43 Just as Jesus was speaking, Judas appeared. He was one of the 12 disciples. A crowd was with him. They were carrying swords and clubs. The chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders had sent them. 44 Judas, who was going to hand Jesus over, had arranged a signal with them. ‘The one I kiss is the man,’ he said. ‘Arrest him and have the guards lead him away.’ 45 So Judas went to Jesus at once. Judas said, ‘Rabbi!’ And he kissed Jesus. 46 The men grabbed Jesus and arrested him. 47 Then one of those standing nearby pulled his sword out. He struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear. 48 ‘Am I leading a band of armed men against you?’ asked Jesus. ‘Do you have to come out with swords and clubs to capture me? 49 Every day I was with you. I taught in the temple courtyard, and you didn’t arrest me. But the Scriptures must come true.’ 50 Then everyone left him and ran away. 51 A young man was following Jesus. The man was wearing nothing but a piece of linen cloth. When the crowd grabbed him, 52 he ran away naked. He left his clothing behind.

Jesus is taken to the Sanhedrin

53 The crowd took Jesus to the high priest. All the chief priests, the elders, and the teachers of the law came together. 54 Not too far away, Peter followed Jesus. He went right into the courtyard of the high priest. There he sat with the guards. He warmed himself at the fire. 55 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for something to use against Jesus. They wanted to put him to death. But they did not find any proof. 56 Many witnesses lied about him. But their stories did not agree. 57 Then some of them stood up. Here is what those false witnesses said about him. 58 ‘We heard him say, “I will destroy this temple made by human hands. In three days I will build another temple, not made by human hands.” ’ 59 But what they said did not agree. 60 Then the high priest stood up in front of them. He asked Jesus, ‘Aren’t you going to answer? What are these charges these men are bringing against you?’ 61 But Jesus remained silent. He gave no answer. Again the high priest asked him, ‘Are you the Messiah? Are you the Son of the Blessed One?’ 62 ‘I am’, said Jesus. ‘And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One. You will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven.’ 63 The high priest tore his clothes. ‘Why do we need any more witnesses?’ he asked. 64 ‘You have heard him say a very evil thing against God. What do you think?’ They all found him guilty and said he must die. 65 Then some began to spit at him. They blindfolded him. They hit him with their fists. They said, ‘Prophesy!’ And the guards took him and beat him.

Peter says he does not know Jesus

66 Peter was below in the courtyard. One of the high priest’s female servants came by. 67 When she saw Peter warming himself, she looked closely at him. ‘You also were with Jesus, that Nazarene,’ she said. 68 But Peter said he had not been with him. ‘I don’t know or understand what you’re talking about,’ he said. He went out to the entrance to the courtyard. 69 The servant saw him there. She said again to those standing around, ‘This fellow is one of them.’ 70 Again he said he was not. After a little while, those standing nearby said to Peter, ‘You must be one of them. You are from Galilee.’ 71 Then Peter began to curse. He said to them, ‘I don’t know this man you’re talking about!’ 72 Right away the cockerel crowed the second time. Then Peter remembered what Jesus had spoken to him. ‘The cockerel will crow twice,’ he had said. ‘Before it does, you will say three times that you don’t know me.’ Peter broke down and cried.

La Passione, 14–15. La congiura contro Gesù

1 Mancavano due giorni alla Pasqua e alla festa degli Azzimi. I capi dei sacerdoti e gli scribi cercavano il modo di prendere Gesù con inganno e ucciderlo; 2 infatti dicevano: «Non durante la festa, perché non vi sia qualche tumulto di popolo».

Maria di Betania unge il capo a Gesù

3 Gesù era a Betania, in casa di Simone il lebbroso; mentre egli era a tavola entrò una donna che aveva un vaso di alabastro pieno d’olio profumato, di nardo* puro, di gran valore; rotto l’alabastro, gli versò l’olio sul capo. 4 Alcuni si indignarono fra di loro e dissero: «Perché si è fatto questo spreco d’olio? 5 Si poteva vendere quest’olio per più di trecento denari e darli ai poveri». Ed erano irritati contro di lei. 6 Ma Gesù disse: «Lasciatela stare! Perché le date noia? Ha fatto un’azione buona verso di me. 7 Poiché i poveri li avete sempre con voi; quando volete, potete far loro del bene; ma me non mi avete per sempre. 8 Lei ha fatto ciò che poteva; ha anticipato l’unzione del mio corpo per la sepoltura. 9 In verità vi dico che in tutto il mondo, dovunque sarà predicato il vangelo, anche quello che costei ha fatto sarà raccontato, in memoria di lei».

Giuda decide di tradire Gesù

10 Giuda Iscariota, uno dei dodici, andò dai capi dei sacerdoti con lo scopo di consegnare loro Gesù. 11 Essi, dopo averlo ascoltato, si rallegrarono e promisero di dargli del denaro. Perciò egli cercava il modo opportuno per consegnarlo.

L’ultima Pasqua

12 Il primo giorno degli Azzimi, quando si sacrificava la Pasqua*, i suoi discepoli gli dissero: «Dove vuoi che andiamo a preparare perché tu possa mangiare la Pasqua?» 13 Egli mandò due dei suoi discepoli e disse loro: «Andate in città, e vi verrà incontro un uomo che porta una brocca d’acqua; seguitelo; 14 dove entrerà, dite al padrone di casa: “Il Maestro dice: ‘Dov’è la mia stanza in cui mangerò la Pasqua con i miei discepoli?’”. 15 Egli vi mostrerà di sopra una grande sala ammobiliata e pronta; lì apparecchiate per noi». 16 I discepoli andarono, giunsero nella città e trovarono come egli aveva detto loro; e prepararono per la Pasqua. 17 Quando fu sera, giunse Gesù con i dodici. 18 Mentre erano a tavola e mangiavano, Gesù disse: «In verità io vi dico che uno di voi, che mangia con me, mi tradirà». 19 Essi cominciarono a rattristarsi e a dirgli uno dopo l’altro: «Sono forse io?» 20 Egli disse loro: «È uno dei dodici, che intinge con me nel piatto. 21 Certo il Figlio dell’uomo se ne va, com’è scritto di lui, ma guai a quell’uomo dal quale il Figlio dell’uomo è tradito! Meglio sarebbe per quell’uomo se non fosse mai nato!»

La cena del Signore

22 Mentre mangiavano, Gesù prese del pane e, dopo aver pronunciato la benedizione, lo spezzò, lo diede loro e disse: «Prendete, questo è il mio corpo». 23 Poi prese un calice e, dopo aver reso grazie, lo diede loro, e tutti ne bevvero. 24 Ed egli disse loro: «Questo è il mio sangue, il sangue del patto, che è sparso per molti. 25 In verità vi dico che non berrò più del frutto della vigna fino al giorno che lo berrò nuovo nel regno di Dio».

Gesù avverte Pietro del suo rinnegamento

26 Dopo che ebbero cantato l’inno, uscirono per andare al monte degli Ulivi. 27 Gesù disse loro: «Voi tutti sarete scandalizzati perché è scritto: “Io percuoterò il pastore e le pecore saranno disperse”*. 28 Ma dopo che sarò risuscitato vi precederò in Galilea». 29 Allora Pietro gli disse: «Quand’anche tutti fossero scandalizzati, io però non lo sarò!» 30 Gesù gli disse: «In verità ti dico che tu, oggi, in questa stessa notte, prima che il gallo abbia cantato due volte, mi rinnegherai tre volte». 31 Ma egli diceva più fermamente ancora: «Anche se dovessi morire con te, non ti rinnegherò». Lo stesso dicevano pure tutti gli altri.

Agonia di Gesù nel giardino del Getsemani

32 Poi giunsero in un podere detto Getsemani*, ed egli disse ai suoi discepoli: «Sedete qui finché io abbia pregato». 33 Gesù prese con sé Pietro, Giacomo e Giovanni e cominciò a essere spaventato e angosciato. 34 E disse loro: «L’anima mia è oppressa da tristezza mortale; rimanete qui e vegliate». 35 Andato un po’ più avanti, si gettò a terra; e pregava che, se fosse possibile, quell’ora passasse oltre da lui. 36 Diceva: «Abbà, Padre! Ogni cosa ti è possibile; allontana da me questo calice! Però non quello che io voglio, ma quello che tu vuoi». 37 Poi venne, li trovò che dormivano e disse a Pietro: «Simone! Dormi? Non sei stato capace di vegliare un’ora sola? 38 Vegliate e pregate, affinché non cadiate in tentazione; lo spirito è pronto, ma la carne è debole». 39 Di nuovo andò e pregò, dicendo le medesime parole. 40 Ritornato, li trovò che dormivano perché gli occhi loro erano appesantiti; e non sapevano che rispondergli. 41 Venne la terza volta e disse loro: «Dormite pure, ormai, e riposatevi! Basta! L’ora è venuta: ecco, il Figlio dell’uomo è consegnato nelle mani dei peccatori. 42 Alzatevi, andiamo; ecco, colui che mi tradisce è vicino».

Arresto di Gesù

43 In quell’istante, mentre Gesù parlava ancora, arrivò Giuda, uno dei dodici, e insieme a lui una folla con spade e bastoni, inviata da parte dei capi dei sacerdoti, degli scribi e degli anziani. 44 Colui che lo tradiva aveva dato loro un segnale, dicendo: «Quello che bacerò, è lui; pigliatelo e portatelo via sicuramente». 45 Appena giunse, subito si accostò a lui e disse: «Rabbì!» e lo baciò. 46 Allora quelli gli misero le mani addosso e lo arrestarono. 47 Ma uno dei presenti, tratta la spada, percosse il servo del sommo sacerdote e gli recise l’orecchio. 48 Gesù, rivolto a loro, disse: «Voi siete usciti con spade e bastoni, come contro un brigante, per prendermi. 49 Ogni giorno ero in mezzo a voi insegnando nel tempio e voi non mi avete preso; ma questo è avvenuto affinché le Scritture fossero adempiute». 50 Allora tutti, lasciatolo, se ne fuggirono. 51 Un giovane lo seguiva, coperto soltanto con un lenzuolo; e lo afferrarono; 52 ma egli, lasciando andare il lenzuolo, se ne fuggì nudo.

Gesù compare davanti a Caiafa e al sinedrio

53 Condussero Gesù davanti al sommo sacerdote; e si riunirono tutti i capi dei sacerdoti, gli anziani e gli scribi. 54 Pietro, che lo aveva seguito da lontano fin dentro il cortile del sommo sacerdote, stava lì seduto con le guardie e si scaldava al fuoco. 55 I capi dei sacerdoti e tutto il sinedrio* cercavano qualche testimonianza contro Gesù per farlo morire; ma non ne trovavano. 56 Molti deponevano il falso contro di lui, ma le testimonianze non erano concordi. 57 E alcuni si alzarono e testimoniarono falsamente contro di lui dicendo: 58 «Noi l’abbiamo udito mentre diceva: “Io distruggerò questo tempio fatto da mani d’uomo e in tre giorni ne ricostruirò un altro, non fatto da mani d’uomo”». 59 Ma neppure così la loro testimonianza era concorde. 60 Allora il sommo sacerdote, alzatosi in piedi nel mezzo, domandò a Gesù: «Non rispondi nulla? Che cosa testimoniano costoro contro di te?» 61 Ma egli tacque e non rispose nulla. Di nuovo il sommo sacerdote lo interrogò e gli disse: «Sei tu il Cristo, il Figlio del Benedetto?» 62 Gesù disse: «Io sono; e vedrete il Figlio dell’uomo seduto alla destra della Potenza e venire sulle nuvole del cielo*». 63 Il sommo sacerdote si stracciò le vesti e disse: «Che bisogno abbiamo ancora di testimoni? 64 Voi avete udito la bestemmia. Che ve ne pare?» Tutti lo condannarono come reo di morte. 65 Alcuni cominciarono a sputargli addosso, a coprirgli la faccia, a dargli dei pugni e a dirgli: «Indovina!» E le guardie si misero a schiaffeggiarlo.

Gesù rinnegato tre volte da Pietro

66 Mentre Pietro era giù nel cortile, venne una delle serve del sommo sacerdote; 67 e, veduto Pietro che si scaldava, lo guardò bene e disse: «Anche tu eri con Gesù Nazareno». 68 Ma egli negò dicendo: «Non so, né capisco quello che tu dici». Poi andò fuori nell’atrio {e il gallo cantò}. 69 La serva, vedutolo, cominciò di nuovo a dire ai presenti: «Costui è uno di quelli». 70 Ma lui negò di nuovo. E ancora, poco dopo, coloro che erano lì dicevano a Pietro: «Certamente tu sei uno di quelli, anche perché sei Galileo». 71 Ma egli prese a imprecare e a giurare: «Non conosco quest’uomo di cui parlate». 72 E subito, per la seconda volta, il gallo cantò. Allora Pietro si ricordò della parola che Gesù gli aveva detta: «Prima che il gallo abbia cantato due volte, tu mi rinnegherai tre volte». E si abbandonò al pianto.
