Jesus rises from the dead

1 It was very early in the morning on the first day of the week. The women took the spices they had prepared. Then they went to the tomb. 2 They found the stone rolled away from it. 3 When they entered the tomb, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 They were wondering about this. Suddenly two men in clothes as bright as lightning stood beside them. 5 The women were terrified. They bowed down with their faces to the ground. Then the men said to them, ‘Why do you look for the living among the dead? 6 Jesus is not here! He has risen! Remember how he told you he would rise. It was while he was still with you in Galilee. 7 He said, “The Son of Man must be handed over to sinful people. He must be nailed to a cross. On the third day he will rise from the dead.” ’ 8 Then the women remembered Jesus’ words. 9 They came back from the tomb. They told all these things to the 11 apostles and to all the others. 10 Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them were the ones who told the apostles. 11 But the apostles did not believe the women. Their words didn’t make any sense to them. 12 But Peter got up and ran to the tomb. He bent over and saw the strips of linen lying by themselves. Then he went away, wondering what had happened.

On the road to Emmaus

13 That same day two of Jesus’ followers were going to a village called Emmaus. It was about 7 miles from Jerusalem. 14 They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. 15 As they talked about those things, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them. 16 But God kept them from recognising him. 17 Jesus asked them, ‘What are you talking about as you walk along?’ They stood still, and their faces were sad. 18 One of them was named Cleopas. He said to Jesus, ‘Are you the only person visiting Jerusalem who doesn’t know? Don’t you know about the things that have happened there in the last few days?’ 19 ‘What things?’ Jesus asked. ‘About Jesus of Nazareth,’ they replied. ‘He was a prophet. He was powerful in what he said and did in the sight of God and all the people. 20 The chief priests and our rulers handed Jesus over to be sentenced to death. They nailed him to a cross. 21 But we had hoped that he was the one who was going to set Israel free. Also, it is the third day since all this happened. 22 Some of our women amazed us too. Early this morning they went to the tomb. 23 But they didn’t find his body. So they came and told us what they had seen. They saw angels, who said Jesus was alive. 24 Then some of our friends went to the tomb. They saw it was empty, just as the women had said. They didn’t see Jesus’ body there.’ 25 Jesus said to them, ‘How foolish you are! How long it takes you to believe all that the prophets said! 26 Didn’t the Messiah have to suffer these things and then receive his glory?’ 27 Jesus explained to them what was said about himself in all the Scriptures. He began with Moses and all the Prophets. 28 They approached the village where they were going. Jesus kept walking as if he were going further. 29 But they tried hard to keep him from leaving. They said, ‘Stay with us. It is nearly evening. The day is almost over.’ So he went in to stay with them. 30 He joined them at the table. Then he took bread and gave thanks. He broke it and began to give it to them. 31 Their eyes were opened, and they recognised him. But then he disappeared from their sight. 32 They said to each other, ‘He explained to us what the Scriptures meant. Weren’t we excited as he talked with us on the road?’ 33 They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the 11 disciples and those with them. They were all gathered together. 34 They were saying, ‘It’s true! The Lord has risen! He has appeared to Simon!’ 35 Then the two of them told what had happened to them on the way. They told how they had recognised Jesus when he broke the bread.

Jesus appears to the disciples

36 The disciples were still talking about this when Jesus himself suddenly stood among them. He said, ‘May you have peace!’ 37 They were surprised and terrified. They thought they were seeing a ghost. 38 Jesus said to them, ‘Why are you troubled? Why do you have doubts in your minds? 39 Look at my hands and my feet. It’s really me! Touch me and see. A ghost does not have a body or bones. But you can see that I do.’ 40 After he said that, he showed them his hands and feet. 41 But they still did not believe it. They were amazed and filled with joy. So Jesus asked them, ‘Do you have anything here to eat?’ 42 They gave him a piece of cooked fish. 43 He took it and ate it in front of them. 44 Jesus said to them, ‘This is what I told you while I was still with you. Everything written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms must come true.’ 45 Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. 46 He told them, ‘This is what is written. The Messiah will suffer. He will rise from the dead on the third day. 47 His followers will preach in his name. They will tell others to turn away from their sins and be forgiven. People from every nation will hear it, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 You have seen these things with your own eyes. 49 I am going to send you what my Father has promised. But for now, stay in the city. Stay there until you have received power from heaven.’

Jesus is taken up into heaven

50 Jesus led his disciples out to the area near Bethany. Then he lifted up his hands and blessed them. 51 While he was blessing them, he left them. He was taken up into heaven. 52 Then they worshipped him. With great joy, they returned to Jerusalem. 53 Every day they went to the temple, praising God.

La risurrezione di Gesù

1 Ma il primo giorno della settimana, la mattina prestissimo, esse si recarono al sepolcro, portando gli aromi che avevano preparati. 2 E trovarono che la pietra era stata rotolata dal sepolcro. 3 Ma quando entrarono non trovarono il corpo del Signore Gesù. 4 Mentre se ne stavano perplesse di questo fatto, ecco che apparvero davanti a loro due uomini in vesti risplendenti; 5 tutte impaurite chinarono il viso a terra, ma quelli dissero loro: «Perché cercate il vivente tra i morti? 6 Egli non è qui, ma è risuscitato; ricordate come egli vi parlò quando era ancora in Galilea, 7 dicendo che il Figlio dell’uomo doveva essere dato nelle mani di uomini peccatori ed essere crocifisso, e il terzo giorno risuscitare». 8 Esse si ricordarono delle sue parole. 9 Tornate dal sepolcro, annunciarono tutte queste cose agli undici e a tutti gli altri. 10 Quelle che dissero queste cose agli apostoli erano: Maria Maddalena, Giovanna, Maria, madre di Giacomo, e le altre donne che erano con loro. 11 Quelle parole sembrarono loro un vaneggiare e non gli credettero. 12 Ma Pietro, alzatosi, corse al sepolcro; si chinò a guardare e vide solo le fasce; poi se ne andò, meravigliandosi dentro di sé per quello che era avvenuto.

Gesù sulla via per Emmaus

13 Due di loro se ne andavano in quello stesso giorno a un villaggio di nome Emmaus, distante da Gerusalemme sessanta stadi; 14 e parlavano tra di loro di tutte le cose che erano accadute. 15 Mentre discorrevano e discutevano insieme, Gesù stesso si avvicinò e cominciò a camminare con loro. 16 Ma i loro occhi erano impediti a tal punto che non lo riconoscevano. 17 Egli domandò loro: «Di che discorrete fra di voi lungo il cammino?» Ed essi si fermarono tutti tristi. 18 Uno dei due, che si chiamava Cleopa, gli rispose: «Tu solo, tra i forestieri, stando in Gerusalemme, non hai saputo le cose che vi sono accadute in questi giorni?» 19 Egli disse loro: «Quali?» Essi gli risposero: «Il fatto di Gesù Nazareno, che era un profeta potente in opere e in parole davanti a Dio e a tutto il popolo; 20 come i capi dei sacerdoti e i nostri magistrati lo hanno fatto condannare a morte e lo hanno crocifisso. 21 Noi speravamo che fosse lui che avrebbe liberato Israele; invece, con tutto ciò, ecco il terzo giorno da quando sono accadute queste cose. 22 È vero che certe donne tra di noi ci hanno fatto stupire; andate la mattina di buon’ora al sepolcro, 23 non hanno trovato il suo corpo, e sono ritornate dicendo di aver avuto anche una visione di angeli, i quali dicono che egli è vivo. 24 Alcuni dei nostri sono andati al sepolcro e hanno trovato tutto come avevano detto le donne, ma lui non lo hanno visto». 25 Allora Gesù disse loro: «O insensati e lenti di cuore nel credere a tutte le cose che i profeti hanno dette! 26 Non doveva il Cristo soffrire tutto ciò ed entrare nella sua gloria?» 27 E, cominciando da Mosè e da tutti i profeti, spiegò loro in tutte le Scritture le cose che lo riguardavano. 28 Quando si furono avvicinati al villaggio dove stavano andando, egli fece come se volesse proseguire. 29 Essi lo trattennero, dicendo: «Rimani con noi, perché si fa sera e il giorno sta ormai per finire». Ed egli entrò per rimanere con loro. 30 Quando fu a tavola con loro prese il pane, lo benedisse, lo spezzò e lo diede loro. 31 Allora i loro occhi furono aperti e lo riconobbero, ma egli scomparve alla loro vista. 32 Ed essi dissero l’uno all’altro: «Non sentivamo forse ardere il cuore {dentro di noi} mentre egli ci parlava per la via e ci spiegava le Scritture?» 33 E, alzatisi in quello stesso momento, tornarono a Gerusalemme e trovarono riuniti gli undici e quelli che erano con loro, 34 i quali dicevano: «Il Signore è veramente risorto ed è apparso a Simone». 35 Essi pure raccontarono le cose avvenute loro per la via, e come era stato da loro riconosciuto nello spezzare il pane. 36 Ora, mentre essi parlavano di queste cose, Gesù stesso comparve in mezzo a loro e disse: «Pace a voi!» 37 Ma essi, sconvolti e atterriti, pensavano di vedere uno spirito. 38 Ed egli disse loro: «Perché siete turbati? E perché sorgono dubbi nel vostro cuore? 39 Guardate le mie mani e i miei piedi, perché sono proprio io! Toccatemi e guardate, perché uno spirito non ha carne e ossa, come vedete che ho io». 40 E, detto questo, mostrò loro le mani e i piedi. 41 Ma siccome per la gioia non credevano ancora e si stupivano, disse loro: «Avete qui qualcosa da mangiare?» 42 Essi gli porsero un pezzo di pesce arrostito; 43 egli lo prese, e mangiò in loro presenza.

La missione affidata ai discepoli

44 Poi disse loro: «Queste sono le cose che io vi dicevo quando ero ancora con voi: che si dovevano compiere tutte le cose scritte di me nella legge di Mosè, nei profeti e nei Salmi». 45 Allora aprì loro la mente per capire le Scritture e disse loro: 46 «Così è scritto, che il Cristo avrebbe sofferto e sarebbe risorto dai morti il terzo giorno, 47 e che nel suo nome si sarebbe predicato il ravvedimento per il perdono dei peccati a tutte le genti, cominciando da Gerusalemme. 48 Voi siete testimoni di queste cose. 49 Ed {ecco,} io mando su di voi quello che il Padre mio ha promesso; ma voi, rimanete in città, finché siate rivestiti di potenza dall’alto».

L’ascensione di Gesù

50 Poi li condusse {fuori} fin presso Betania; e, alzate in alto le mani, li benedisse. 51 Mentre li benediceva, si staccò da loro e fu portato su nel cielo. 52 Ed essi, adoratolo, tornarono a Gerusalemme con grande gioia; 53 e stavano sempre nel tempio, benedicendo Dio.
