1 Land was given to the tribe of Manasseh. It was given to Makir. Manasseh was Joseph’s eldest son. Makir was Manasseh’s eldest son. The people of Gilead came from the family line of Makir. The people of Gilead had received the lands of Gilead and Bashan. That’s because the people of Makir were great soldiers. 2 So land was given to the rest of the people of Manasseh. It was given to the family groups of Abiezer, Helek, Asriel, Shechem, Hepher and Shemida. They were the other men in the family line of Manasseh, the son of Joseph. Those were their names by their family groups. 3 Makir was the son of Manasseh. Gilead was the son of Makir. Hepher was the son of Gilead. And Zelophehad was the son of Hepher. Zelophehad didn’t have any sons. He only had daughters. Their names were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milkah and Tirzah. 4 The daughters of Zelophehad went to Eleazar the priest and to Joshua, the son of Nun. They also went to the other leaders. They said, ‘The LORD commanded Moses to give us our share of land among our male relatives.’ So Joshua gave them land along with their male relatives. That was according to what the LORD had commanded. 5 Manasseh’s share was made up of ten pieces of land. That land was in addition to Gilead and Bashan east of the River Jordan. 6 So the five granddaughters of Hepher in the family line of Manasseh received land, just as the other five sons of Manasseh did. The land of Gilead belonged to the rest of the family line of Manasseh. 7 The territory of Manasseh reached from Asher to Mikmethath. Mikmethath was east of Shechem. The border ran south from Mikmethath. The people living at En Tappuah were inside the border. 8 Manasseh had the land around Tappuah. But the town of Tappuah itself was on the border of Manasseh’s land. It belonged to the people of Ephraim. 9 The border continued south to the Kanah Valley. Some of the towns that belonged to Ephraim were located among the towns of Manasseh. But the border of Manasseh was the north side of the valley. The border came to an end at the Mediterranean Sea. 10 The land on the south belonged to Ephraim. The land on the north belonged to Manasseh. The territory of Manasseh reached the Mediterranean Sea. The tribe of Asher was the border on the north. The tribe of Issachar was the border on the east. 11 Inside the land given to Issachar and Asher, the towns of Beth Shan and Ibleam belonged to Manasseh. The towns of Dor, Endor, Taanach and Megiddo and their people also belonged to Manasseh. Manasseh was given all those towns and the settlements around them. The third town in the list was also called Naphoth Dor. 12 But the people of Manasseh weren’t able to take over those towns. That’s because the Canaanites had made up their minds to live in that area. 13 The Israelites grew stronger. Then they forced the Canaanites to work hard for them. But they didn’t drive them out completely. 14 The people in the family line of Joseph spoke to Joshua. They said, ‘Why have you given us only one share of the land to have as our own? There are large numbers of us. The LORD has blessed us greatly.’ 15 ‘That’s true,’ Joshua said. ‘There are large numbers of you. And the hill country of Ephraim is too small for you. So go up into the forest. Clear out some land for yourselves in the territory of the Perizzites and Rephaites.’ 16 The people in Joseph’s family line replied, ‘The hill country isn’t big enough for us. And all the Canaanites who live in the plains use chariots that have iron parts. They include the people of Beth Shan and its settlements. They also include the people who live in the Valley of Jezreel.’ 17 Joshua spoke again to the people in Joseph’s family line. He said to the people of Ephraim and Manasseh, ‘There are large numbers of you. And you are very powerful. You will have more than one piece of land. 18 You will also have the central hill country. It’s covered with trees. Cut them down and clear the land. That whole land from one end to the other will belong to you. The Canaanites use chariots that have iron parts. And those people are strong. But you can drive them out.’

1 Questa fu la parte toccata in sorte alla tribù di Manasse, perché egli era il primogenito di Giuseppe. Machir, primogenito di Manasse e padre di Galaad, siccome era un guerriero, aveva avuto Galaad e Basan. 2 Fu dunque sorteggiata una parte agli altri figli di Manasse, secondo le loro famiglie: ai figli di Abiezer, ai figli di Chelec, ai figli di Asriel, ai figli di Sichem, ai figli di Chefer, ai figli di Semida. Questi sono i figli maschi di Manasse, figlio di Giuseppe, secondo le loro famiglie. 3 Or Selofead, figlio di Chefer, figlio di Galaad, figlio di Machir, figlio di Manasse, non ebbe figli, ma ebbe delle figlie; questi sono i loro nomi: Mala, Noa, Cogla, Milca e Tirsa. 4 Queste si presentarono davanti al sacerdote Eleazar, davanti a Giosuè figlio di Nun e davanti ai capi, e dissero: «Il Signore comandò a Mosè di darci un’eredità in mezzo ai nostri fratelli». E Giosuè diede loro un’eredità in mezzo ai fratelli del padre loro, conformemente all’ordine del Signore. 5 Toccarono così dieci parti a Manasse, oltre il paese di Galaad e di Basan che è di là dal Giordano; 6 poiché le figlie di Manasse ebbero un’eredità in mezzo ai figli di lui, e il paese di Galaad fu per gli altri figli di Manasse. 7 Il confine di Manasse si estendeva da Ascer a Micmetat, che si trova di fronte a Sichem, e girava a destra verso gli abitanti di En-Tappuà. 8 Il paese di Tappuà appartenne a Manasse; ma Tappuà, sul confine di Manasse, appartenne ai figli di Efraim. 9 Poi il confine scendeva al torrente di Cana, a sud del torrente, presso città che appartenevano a Efraim in mezzo alle città di Manasse; ma il confine di Manasse era dal lato nord del torrente, e terminava al mare. 10 Ciò che era a mezzogiorno apparteneva a Efraim; ciò che era a settentrione apparteneva a Manasse, e il mare era il loro confine; a settentrione confinavano con Ascer, e a oriente con Issacar. 11 In Issacar e in Ascer, Manasse ebbe anche Bet-Sean con i suoi villaggi, Ibleam con i suoi villaggi, gli abitanti di Dor con i suoi villaggi, gli abitanti di En-Dor con i suoi villaggi, gli abitanti di Taanac con i suoi villaggi, gli abitanti di Meghiddo con i suoi villaggi: vale a dire tre regioni elevate. 12 Ma i figli di Manasse non poterono impadronirsi di quelle città; i Cananei erano decisi a restare in quel paese. 13 Però, quando i figli d’Israele si furono rinforzati, assoggettarono i Cananei a servitù, ma non li scacciarono del tutto. 14 I figli di Giuseppe dissero a Giosuè: «Perché ci hai dato come eredità un solo lotto, una parte sola? Noi siamo un gran popolo che il Signore ha benedetto abbondantemente». 15 E Giosuè disse loro: «Se siete un popolo numeroso, salite alla foresta e dissodatela per farvi del posto nel paese dei Ferezei e dei Refaim, dato che la regione montuosa di Efraim è troppo esigua per voi». 16 Ma i figli di Giuseppe risposero: «Quella regione montuosa non ci basta; e quanto al territorio della pianura, tutti i Cananei che l’abitano hanno dei carri di ferro: sia quelli che stanno a Bet-Sean e nei suoi villaggi, sia quelli che stanno nella valle d’Izreel». 17 Allora Giosuè parlò alla casa di Giuseppe, a Efraim e a Manasse, e disse loro: «Voi siete un popolo numeroso e avete una gran forza; non avrete una parte sola; 18 ma vostra sarà la regione montuosa; e siccome è una foresta, la dissoderete, e sarà vostra in tutta la sua distesa, poiché voi scaccerete i Cananei, benché abbiano dei carri di ferro e benché siano potenti».
