Jeremiah is put in prison

1 Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, appointed Zedekiah to be king of Judah. He was the son of Josiah. Zedekiah ruled in place of Jehoiachin, the son of Jehoiakim. 2 Zedekiah and his attendants didn’t pay any attention to what the LORD had said through Jeremiah the prophet. And the people of the land didn’t pay any attention either. 3 But King Zedekiah sent Jehukal to Jeremiah the prophet. Zedekiah sent Zephaniah the priest along with him. Jehukal was the son of Shelemiah. Zephaniah was the son of Maaseiah. Jehukal and Zephaniah brought the king’s message to Jeremiah. It said, ‘Please pray to the LORD our God for us.’ 4 At that time Jeremiah was free to come and go among the people. Jeremiah had not yet been put in prison. 5 The armies of Babylon were attacking Jerusalem. They received a report that Pharaoh’s army had marched out of Egypt to help Zedekiah. So armies of Babylon pulled back from Jerusalem. 6 A message from the LORD came to Jeremiah. 7 The LORD is the God of Israel. He says, ‘The king of Judah has sent you to ask me for advice. Tell him, “Pharaoh’s army has marched out to help you. But it will go back to its own land. It will return to Egypt. 8 Then the armies of Babylon will come back here. They will attack this city. They will capture it. Then they will burn it down.” 9 ‘The LORD says, “Do not fool yourselves. You think, ‘The Babylonians will leave us alone.’ But they will not! 10 Suppose you destroy all the armies of Babylon that are attacking you. Suppose only wounded men are left in their tents. Even then they will come out and burn down this city.” ’ 11 The armies of Babylon had pulled back from Jerusalem because of Pharaoh’s army. 12 So Jeremiah started to leave the city. He was planning to go to the territory of Benjamin. Jeremiah wanted to get his share of the property among the people there. 13 He got as far as the Benjamin Gate. But the captain of the guard arrested him. He said, ‘You are going over to the side of the Babylonians!’ The captain’s name was Irijah, the son of Shelemiah. Shelemiah was the son of Hananiah. 14 Jeremiah said to Irijah, ‘That isn’t true! I’m not going to the side of the Babylonians.’ But Irijah wouldn’t listen to him. Instead, he arrested Jeremiah. He brought Jeremiah to the officials. 15 They were angry with him. So they had him beaten. Then they took him to the house of Jonathan the secretary. It had been made into a prison. That’s where they put Jeremiah. 16 Jeremiah was put into a prison cell below ground level. He remained there a long time. 17 Then King Zedekiah sent for him. King Zedekiah had Jeremiah brought to the palace. There the king spoke to him in private. The king asked, ‘Do you have a message from the LORD for me?’ ‘Yes’, Jeremiah replied. ‘You will be handed over to the king of Babylon.’ 18 Then Jeremiah continued, ‘Why have you put me in prison? What crime have I committed against you? What have I done to your attendants or these people? 19 Where are your prophets who prophesied to you? They said, “The king of Babylon won’t attack you. He won’t march into this land.” 20 But now please listen, my king and master. Let me make my appeal to you. Please don’t send me back to the house of Jonathan the secretary. If you do, I’ll die there.’ 21 Then King Zedekiah gave the order. His men put Jeremiah in the courtyard of the guard. They gave him a loaf of bread from the street of the bakers. They did it every day until all the bread in the city was gone. So Jeremiah remained in the courtyard of the guard.

1 Il re Sedechia, figlio di Giosia, regnò al posto di Conia, figlio di Ioiachim, e fu costituito re nel paese di Giuda da Nabucodonosor, re di Babilonia. 2 Ma né egli, né i suoi servitori, né il popolo del paese diedero ascolto alle parole che il Signore aveva pronunciate per mezzo del profeta Geremia. 3 Il re Sedechia mandò Ieucal, figlio di Selemia, e Sofonia, figlio di Maaseia, il sacerdote, dal profeta Geremia per dirgli: «Prega per noi il Signore, nostro Dio». 4 Geremia andava e veniva in mezzo al popolo e non era ancora stato messo in prigione. 5 L’esercito del faraone era uscito d’Egitto; e quando i Caldei che assediavano Gerusalemme ne ebbero la notizia, tolsero l’assedio a Gerusalemme. 6 Allora la parola del Signore fu rivolta al profeta Geremia in questi termini: 7 «Così parla il Signore, Dio d’Israele: “Dite così al re di Giuda che vi ha mandati da me per consultarmi: Ecco, l’esercito del faraone, che era uscito in vostro soccorso, è tornato nel suo paese, in Egitto; 8 i Caldei torneranno e combatteranno contro questa città, la conquisteranno e la daranno alle fiamme”. 9 Così parla il Signore: “Non ingannate voi stessi dicendo: ‘Certo, i Caldei se ne andranno da noi’; perché non se ne andranno. 10 Anzi, anche se voi sconfiggeste tutto l’esercito dei Caldei che combatte contro di voi e non ne rimanessero che degli uomini feriti, questi si alzerebbero, ciascuno dalla sua tenda, e darebbero questa città alle fiamme”».

Geremia in prigione

11 Quando l’esercito dei Caldei si fu ritirato davanti a Gerusalemme a causa dell’esercito del faraone, 12 Geremia uscì da Gerusalemme per andare nel paese di Beniamino e ricevervi la sua porzione in mezzo al popolo. 13 Ma quando fu alla porta di Beniamino, c’era là un capitano della guardia di nome Ireia, figlio di Selemia, figlio di Anania, il quale arrestò il profeta Geremia, dicendo: «Tu vai ad arrenderti ai Caldei». 14 Geremia rispose: «È falso! Io non vado ad arrendermi ai Caldei», ma l’altro non gli diede ascolto; arrestò Geremia e lo condusse dai capi. 15 I capi si adirarono contro Geremia, lo percossero e lo misero in prigione nella casa di Gionatan, il segretario; perché di quella avevano fatto un carcere. 16 Quando Geremia fu entrato nella prigione sotterranea fra le segrete e vi fu rimasto molti giorni, 17 il re Sedechia lo mandò a prendere, lo interrogò in casa sua, di nascosto, e gli disse: «C’è qualche parola da parte del Signore?» Geremia rispose: «Sì, c’è»; e aggiunse: «Tu sarai dato in mano al re di Babilonia». 18 Geremia disse inoltre al re Sedechia: «Che male ho commesso contro di te o contro i tuoi servitori o contro questo popolo, perché mi abbiate messo in prigione? 19 Dove sono ora i vostri profeti che vi profetizzavano, dicendo: “Il re di Babilonia non verrà contro di voi né contro questo paese”? 20 Ora ascolta, ti prego, o re, mio signore! La mia supplica giunga ben accolta in tua presenza; non farmi tornare nella casa di Gionatan lo scriba, altrimenti vi morirò». 21 Allora il re Sedechia ordinò che Geremia fosse custodito nel cortile della prigione e gli fosse dato tutti i giorni un pane dalla via dei fornai, finché tutto il pane della città fosse consumato. Così Geremia rimase nel cortile della prigione.
