The church is treated badly and scattered

1 And Saul had agreed with the Sanhedrin that Stephen should die. On that day the church in Jerusalem began to be attacked and treated badly. All except the apostles were scattered throughout Judea and Samaria. 2 Godly Jews buried Stephen. They mourned deeply for him. 3 But Saul began to destroy the church. He went from house to house. He dragged away men and women and put them in prison.

Philip goes to Samaria

4 The believers who had been scattered preached the word everywhere they went. 5 Philip went down to a city in Samaria. There he preached about the Messiah. 6 The crowds listened to Philip and saw the signs he did. All of them paid close attention to what he said. 7 Evil spirits screamed and came out of many people. Many people who were disabled or who couldn’t walk were healed. 8 So there was great joy in that city.

Simon the evil magician

9 A man named Simon lived in the city. For quite a while he had practised evil magic there. He amazed all the people of Samaria. He claimed to be someone great. 10 And all the people listened to him, from the least important of them to the most important. They exclaimed, ‘It is right to call this man the Great Power of God!’ 11 He had amazed them for a long time with his evil magic. So they followed him. 12 But Philip announced the good news of God’s kingdom and the name of Jesus Christ. So men and women believed and were baptised. 13 Simon himself believed and was baptised. He followed Philip everywhere. He was amazed by the great signs and miracles he saw. 14 The apostles in Jerusalem heard that people in Samaria had accepted God’s word. So they sent Peter and John to Samaria. 15 When they arrived there, they prayed for the new believers. They prayed that they would receive the Holy Spirit. 16 The Holy Spirit had not yet come on any of them. They had only been baptised in the name of the Lord Jesus. 17 Then Peter and John placed their hands on them. And they received the Holy Spirit. 18 Simon watched as the apostles placed their hands on them. He saw that the Spirit was given to them. So he offered money to Peter and John. 19 He said, ‘Give me this power too. Then everyone I place my hands on will receive the Holy Spirit.’ 20 Peter answered, ‘May your money be destroyed with you! Do you think you can buy God’s gift with money? 21 You have no part or share in this holy work. Your heart is not right with God. 22 Turn away from this evil sin of yours. Pray to the Lord. Perhaps he will forgive you for having such a thought in your heart. 23 I see that you are very bitter. You are a prisoner of sin.’ 24 Then Simon answered, ‘Pray to the Lord for me. Pray that nothing you have said will happen to me.’ 25 Peter and John continued to preach the word of the Lord and tell people about Jesus. Then they returned to Jerusalem. On the way they preached the good news in many villages in Samaria.

Philip and the man from Ethiopia

26 An angel of the Lord spoke to Philip. ‘Go south to the desert road,’ he said. ‘It’s the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.’ 27 So Philip started out. On his way he met an Ethiopian official. The man had an important position in charge of all the wealth of the Kandake. Kandake means queen of Ethiopia. This official had gone to Jerusalem to worship. 28 On his way home he was sitting in his chariot. He was reading the Book of Isaiah the prophet. 29 The Holy Spirit told Philip, ‘Go to that chariot. Stay near it.’ 30 So Philip ran up to the chariot. He heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. ‘Do you understand what you’re reading?’ Philip asked. 31 ‘How can I?’ he said. ‘I need someone to explain it to me.’ So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. 32 Here is the part of Scripture the official was reading. It says, ‘He was led like a sheep to be killed. Just as lambs are silent while their wool is being cut off, he did not open his mouth. 33 When he was treated badly, he was refused a fair trial. Who can say anything about his children? His life was cut off from the earth.’ 34 The official said to Philip, ‘Tell me, please. Who is the prophet talking about? Himself, or someone else?’ 35 Then Philip began with that same part of Scripture. He told him the good news about Jesus. 36 As they travelled along the road, they came to some water. The official said, ‘Look! Here is water! What can stop me from being baptised?’ 38 He gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the official went down into the water. Philip baptised him. 39 When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away. The official did not see him again. He went on his way full of joy. 40 Philip was seen next at Azotus. From there he travelled all around. He preached the good news in all the towns. Finally he arrived in Caesarea.

1 E Saulo approvava la sua uccisione. Vi fu in quel tempo una grande persecuzione contro la chiesa che era in Gerusalemme. Tutti furono dispersi per le regioni della Giudea e della Samaria, salvo gli apostoli. 2 Uomini pii seppellirono Stefano e fecero gran cordoglio per lui. 3 Saulo intanto devastava la chiesa, entrando di casa in casa; e, trascinando via uomini e donne, li metteva in prigione.

4 Allora quelli che erano dispersi se ne andarono di luogo in luogo, portando il lieto messaggio della Parola. 5 Filippo, disceso nella città di Samaria, vi predicò il Cristo. 6 E le folle unanimi prestavano attenzione alle cose dette da Filippo, ascoltandolo e osservando i segni miracolosi che faceva. 7 Infatti gli spiriti immondi uscivano da molti indemoniati, mandando alte grida; e molti paralitici e zoppi erano guariti. 8 E vi fu grande gioia in quella città. 9 Ora vi era un tale, di nome Simone, che già da tempo esercitava nella città le arti magiche e faceva stupire la gente di Samaria, spacciandosi per un personaggio importante. 10 Tutti, dal più piccolo al più grande, gli davano ascolto, dicendo: «Questi è “la potenza di Dio”, quella che è chiamata “la Grande”». 11 E gli davano ascolto, perché già da molto tempo li aveva incantati con le sue arti magiche. 12 Ma quando ebbero creduto a Filippo, che portava loro il lieto messaggio del regno di Dio e il nome di Gesù Cristo, furono battezzati, uomini e donne. 13 Simone credette anche lui; e, dopo essere stato battezzato, stava sempre con Filippo; e restava meravigliato, vedendo i segni e le grandi opere potenti che venivano fatte. 14 Allora gli apostoli, che erano a Gerusalemme, saputo che la Samaria aveva accolto la Parola di Dio, mandarono da loro Pietro e Giovanni. 15 Essi andarono e pregarono per loro affinché ricevessero lo Spirito Santo; 16 infatti non era ancora disceso su alcuno di loro, ma erano stati soltanto battezzati nel nome del Signore Gesù. 17 Quindi imposero loro le mani ed essi ricevettero lo Spirito Santo. 18 Simone, vedendo che per l’imposizione delle mani degli apostoli veniva dato lo Spirito, offrì loro del denaro, dicendo: 19 «Date anche a me questo potere, affinché colui al quale imporrò le mani riceva lo Spirito Santo». 20 Ma Pietro gli disse: «Il tuo denaro vada con te in perdizione, perché hai creduto di poter acquistare con denaro il dono di Dio. 21 Tu, in questo, non hai parte né sorte alcuna; perché il tuo cuore non è retto davanti a Dio. 22 Ravvediti dunque di questa tua malvagità; e prega il Signore affinché, se è possibile, ti perdoni il pensiero del tuo cuore. 23 Vedo infatti che tu sei pieno di amarezza e prigioniero d’iniquità». 24 Simone rispose: «Pregate voi il Signore per me affinché nulla di ciò che avete detto mi accada». 25 Essi, dopo aver reso testimonianza e aver annunciato la Parola del Signore, se ne ritornarono a Gerusalemme, evangelizzando molti villaggi della Samaria.

Filippo e il ministro etiope

26 Un angelo del Signore parlò a Filippo così: «Àlzati e va’ verso mezzogiorno, sulla via che da Gerusalemme scende a Gaza. Essa è una strada deserta». 27 Egli si alzò e partì. Ed ecco un Etiope, eunuco e ministro di Candace, regina di Etiopia, sovrintendente a tutti i tesori di lei, era venuto a Gerusalemme per adorare, 28 e ora facendo ritorno, seduto sul suo carro, stava leggendo il profeta Isaia. 29 Lo Spirito disse a Filippo: «Avvicìnati e raggiungi quel carro». 30 Filippo accorse, udì che quell’uomo leggeva il profeta Isaia e gli disse: «Capisci quello che stai leggendo?» 31 Quegli rispose: «E come potrei, se nessuno mi guida?» E invitò Filippo a salire e a sedersi accanto a lui. 32 Or il passo della Scrittura che stava leggendo era questo: «Egli è stato condotto al macello come una pecora; e come un agnello che è muto davanti a colui che lo tosa, così egli non ha aperto la bocca. 33 Nella {sua} umiliazione egli fu sottratto al giudizio. Chi potrà descrivere la sua generazione? Poiché la sua vita è stata tolta dalla terra»*. 34 L’eunuco, rivolto a Filippo, disse: «Di chi, ti prego, dice questo il profeta? Di se stesso, oppure di un altro?» 35 Allora Filippo prese a parlare e, cominciando da questo passo della Scrittura, gli comunicò il lieto messaggio di Gesù. 36 Strada facendo giunsero a un luogo dove c’era dell’acqua. E l’eunuco disse: «Ecco dell’acqua; che cosa mi impedisce di essere battezzato?» 37 [Filippo disse: «Se tu credi con tutto il cuore, è possibile». L’eunuco rispose: «Io credo che Gesù Cristo è il Figlio di Dio».] 38 Fece fermare il carro, e discesero tutti e due nell’acqua, Filippo e l’eunuco; e Filippo lo battezzò. 39 Quando uscirono dall’acqua, lo Spirito del Signore rapì Filippo; l’eunuco non lo vide più e continuò il suo viaggio tutto allegro. 40 Poi Filippo si ritrovò in Azot*; e, proseguendo, evangelizzò tutte le città, finché giunse a Cesarea.
