God is faithful

1 Is there any advantage in being a Jew? Is there any value in being circumcised? 2 There is great value in every way! First of all, the Jews have been given the very words of God. 3 What if some Jews were not faithful? Will the fact that they weren’t faithful keep God from being faithful? 4 Not at all! God is true, even if every human being is a liar. It is written, ‘You are right when you sentence me. You are fair when you judge me.’ 5 Doesn’t the fact that we are wrong prove more clearly that God is right? Then what can we say? Can we say that God is not fair when he brings his anger down on us? As you can tell, I am just using human ways of thinking. 6 God is certainly fair! If he weren’t, how could he judge the world? 7 Someone might argue, ‘When I lie, it becomes clearer that God is truthful. It makes his glory shine more brightly. Why then does he find me guilty of sin?’ 8 Why not say, ‘Let’s do evil things so that good things will happen’? Some people actually lie by reporting that this is what we say. They are the ones who will rightly be found guilty.

No one is right with God

9 What should we say then? Do we Jews have any advantage? Not at all! We have already claimed that Jews and Gentiles are sinners. Everyone is under the power of sin. 10 It is written, ‘No one is right with God, no one at all. 11 No one understands. No one trusts in God. 12 All of them have turned away. They have all become worthless. No one does anything good, no one at all.’ 13 ‘Their throats are like open graves. With their tongues they tell lies.’ ‘The words from their lips are like the poison of a snake.’ 14 ‘Their mouths are full of curses and bitterness.’ 15 ‘They run quickly to commit murder. 16 They leave a trail of harmful actions. 17 They do not know how to live in peace.’ 18 ‘They don’t have any respect for God.’ 19 What the law says, it says to those who are ruled by the law. Its purpose is to shut every mouth and make the whole world accountable to God. 20 So no one will be considered right with God by obeying the law. Instead, the law makes us more aware of our sin.

Becoming right with God by faith

21 But now God has shown us his saving power without the help of the law. But the Law and the Prophets tell us about this. 22 We are made right with God by putting our faith in Jesus Christ. This happens to all who believe. It is no different for the Jews than for the Gentiles. 23 Everyone has sinned. No one measures up to God’s glory. 24 The free gift of God’s grace makes us right with him. Christ Jesus paid the price to set us free. 25 God gave Christ as a sacrifice to pay for sins through the spilling of his blood. So God forgives the sins of those who have faith. God did all this to prove that he does what is right. He is a God of mercy. So he did not punish for their sins the people who lived before Jesus lived. 26 God did all this to prove in our own time that he does what is right. He also makes right with himself those who believe in Jesus. 27 So who can boast? No one! Are people saved by the law that requires them to obey? Not at all! They are saved because of the law that requires faith. 28 We firmly believe that a person is made right with God because of their faith. They are not saved by obeying the law. 29 Or is God the God of Jews only? Isn’t he also the God of Gentiles? Yes, he is their God too. 30 There is only one God. When those who are circumcised believe in him, he makes them right with himself. Suppose those who are not circumcised believe in him. Then God also will make them right with himself. 31 Does faith make the law useless? Not at all! We agree with the law.

Gottes Treue

1 Was haben dann die Juden für einen Vorzug, oder was nützt die Beschneidung? 2 Viel in jeder Weise! Vor allem: Ihnen ist anvertraut, was Gott geredet hat. 3 Was nun? Wenn einige untreu wurden, hebt dann ihre Untreue die Treue Gottes auf? 4 Das sei ferne! Es bleibe vielmehr so: Gott ist wahrhaftig, und alle Menschen sind Lügner; wie geschrieben steht: »Damit du recht behältst in deinen Worten und siegst, wenn man mit dir rechtet.« 5 Ist’s aber so, dass unsre Ungerechtigkeit Gottes Gerechtigkeit erweist, was sollen wir sagen? Ist Gott dann nicht ungerecht, wenn er zürnt? – Ich rede nach Menschenweise. – 6 Das sei ferne! Wie könnte sonst Gott die Welt richten? 7 Wenn aber die Wahrheit Gottes durch meine Lüge herrlicher wurde zu seiner Ehre, warum sollte ich dann noch als ein Sünder gerichtet werden? 8 Und ist es etwa so, wie wir verlästert werden und einige behaupten, dass wir sagen: Lasst uns Böses tun, damit Gutes daraus komme? Deren Verdammnis geschieht zu Recht.

Die Sünde aller vor Gott

9 Was sagen wir denn nun? Haben wir einen Vorzug? Gar keinen. Denn wir haben soeben bewiesen, dass alle, Juden wie Griechen, unter der Sünde sind, 10 wie geschrieben steht: »Da ist keiner, der gerecht ist, auch nicht einer. 11 Da ist keiner, der verständig ist; da ist keiner, der nach Gott fragt. 12 Alle sind sie abgewichen und allesamt verdorben. Da ist keiner, der Gutes tut, auch nicht einer. 13 Ihr Rachen ist ein offenes Grab; mit ihren Zungen betrügen sie, Otterngift ist unter ihren Lippen; 14 ihr Mund ist voll Fluchens und Bitterkeit. 15 Ihre Füße eilen, Blut zu vergießen; 16 auf ihren Wegen ist lauter Zerstörung und Elend, 17 und den Weg des Friedens kennen sie nicht. 18 Es ist keine Gottesfurcht bei ihnen.« 19 Wir wissen aber: Was das Gesetz sagt, das sagt es denen, die unter dem Gesetz sind, auf dass jeder Mund gestopft werde und alle Welt vor Gott schuldig sei. 20 Denn durch des Gesetzes Werke wird kein Mensch vor ihm gerecht sein. Denn durch das Gesetz kommt Erkenntnis der Sünde.

Die Rechtfertigung allein durch Glauben

21 Nun aber ist ohne Zutun des Gesetzes die Gerechtigkeit, die vor Gott gilt*, offenbart, bezeugt durch das Gesetz und die Propheten. 22 Ich rede aber von der Gerechtigkeit vor Gott, die da kommt durch den Glauben an Jesus Christus zu allen, die glauben. Denn es ist hier kein Unterschied: 23 Sie sind allesamt Sünder und ermangeln des Ruhmes, den sie vor Gott haben sollen,* 24 und werden ohne Verdienst gerecht aus seiner Gnade durch die Erlösung, die durch Christus Jesus geschehen ist. 25 Den hat Gott für den Glauben hingestellt zur Sühne* in seinem Blut zum Erweis seiner Gerechtigkeit, indem er die Sünden vergibt, die früher begangen wurden 26 in der Zeit der Geduld Gottes, um nun, in dieser Zeit, seine Gerechtigkeit zu erweisen, auf dass er allein gerecht sei und gerecht mache den, der da ist aus dem Glauben an Jesus. 27 Wo bleibt nun das Rühmen? Es ist ausgeschlossen. Durch welches Gesetz? Durch das Gesetz der Werke? Nein, sondern durch das Gesetz des Glaubens. 28 So halten wir nun dafür, dass der Mensch gerecht wird ohne des Gesetzes Werke, allein durch den Glauben*. 29 Oder ist Gott allein der Gott der Juden? Ist er nicht auch der Gott der Heiden? Ja gewiss, auch der Heiden. 30 Denn es ist der eine Gott, der gerecht macht die Juden aus dem Glauben und die Heiden durch den Glauben. 31 Wie? Heben wir das Gesetz auf durch den Glauben? Das sei ferne! Sondern wir richten das Gesetz auf.
