Micaiah prophesies against Ahab

1 For three years there wasn’t any war between Aram and Israel. 2 In the third year Jehoshaphat went down to see Ahab, the king of Israel. Jehoshaphat was king of Judah. 3 The king of Israel had spoken to his officials. He had said, ‘Don’t you know that Ramoth Gilead belongs to us? And we aren’t even doing anything to take it back from the king of Aram.’ 4 So Ahab asked Jehoshaphat, ‘Will you go with me to fight against Ramoth Gilead?’ Jehoshaphat replied to the king of Israel, ‘Yes. I’ll go with you. My men will go with you. My horses will also go with you.’ 5 Jehoshaphat continued, ‘First ask the LORD for advice.’ 6 So the king of Israel brought about 400 prophets together. He asked them, ‘Should I go to war against Ramoth Gilead? Or should I stay here?’ ‘Go’, they answered. ‘The Lord will hand it over to you.’ 7 But Jehoshaphat asked, ‘Is there no longer a prophet of the LORD here? If there is, ask him what we should do.’ 8 The king of Israel answered Jehoshaphat. He said, ‘There is still one other man we can go to. We can ask the LORD for advice through him. But I hate him. He never prophesies anything good about me. He only prophesies bad things. His name is Micaiah. He’s the son of Imlah.’ ‘You shouldn’t say bad things about him,’ Jehoshaphat replied. 9 So the king of Israel called for one of his officials. He told him, ‘Bring Micaiah, the son of Imlah, right away.’ 10 The king of Israel and Jehoshaphat, the king of Judah, were wearing their royal robes. They were sitting on their thrones at the threshing-floor. It was near the entrance of the gate of Samaria. All the prophets were prophesying in front of them. 11 Zedekiah was the son of Kenaanah. Zedekiah had made horns out of iron. They looked like animal horns. He announced, ‘The LORD says, “With these horns you will drive back the men of Aram until they are destroyed.” ’ 12 All the other prophets were prophesying the same thing. ‘Attack Ramoth Gilead,’ they said. ‘Win the battle over it. The LORD will hand it over to you.’ 13 A messenger went to get Micaiah. He said to him, ‘Look. The other prophets agree. All of them are saying the king will have success. So agree with them. Say the same thing they do.’ 14 But Micaiah said, ‘You can be sure that the LORD lives. And here is something you can be just as sure of. I can only tell the king what the LORD tells me to say.’ 15 When Micaiah arrived, the king spoke to him. He asked, ‘Should we go to war against Ramoth Gilead, or not?’ ‘Attack’, he answered. ‘You will win. The LORD will hand Ramoth Gilead over to you.’ 16 The king said to him, ‘I’ve made you promise to tell the truth many times before. So don’t tell me anything but the truth in the name of the LORD.’ 17 Then Micaiah answered, ‘I saw all the Israelites scattered on the hills. They were like sheep that didn’t have a shepherd. The LORD said, “These people do not have a master. Let each of them go home in peace.” ’ 18 The king of Israel spoke to Jehoshaphat. He said, ‘Didn’t I tell you he never prophesies anything good about me? He only prophesies bad things.’ 19 Micaiah continued, ‘Listen to the LORD’s message. I saw the LORD sitting on his throne. All the angels of heaven were standing around him. Some were standing at his right side. The others were standing at his left side. 20 The LORD said, “Who will get Ahab to attack Ramoth Gilead? I want him to die there.” ‘One angel suggested one thing. Another suggested something else. 21 Finally, a spirit came forward and stood in front of the LORD. The spirit said, “I’ll get Ahab to do it.” 22 ‘ “How?” the LORD asked. ‘The spirit said, “I’ll go out and put lies in the mouths of all his prophets.” ‘ “You will have success in getting Ahab to attack Ramoth Gilead,” said the LORD. “Go and do it.” 23 ‘So the LORD has put lies in the mouths of all your prophets. He has said that great harm will come to you.’ 24 Then Zedekiah, the son of Kenaanah, went up and slapped Micaiah in the face. Zedekiah asked Micaiah, ‘Do you think the spirit sent by the LORD left me? Do you think that spirit went to speak to you?’ 25 Micaiah replied, ‘You will find out on the day you go to hide in an inside room to save your life.’ 26 Then the king of Israel gave an order. He said, ‘Take Micaiah away. Send him back to Amon. Amon is the ruler of the city of Samaria. And send him back to Joash. Joash is a member of the royal court. 27 Tell him, “The king says, ‘Put this fellow in prison. Don’t give him anything but bread and water until I return safely.’ ” ’ 28 Micaiah announced, ‘Do you really think you will return safely? If you do, the LORD hasn’t spoken through me.’ He continued, ‘All of you people, remember what I’ve said!’

Ahab is killed at Ramoth Gilead

29 So the king of Israel went up to Ramoth Gilead. Jehoshaphat, the king of Judah, went there too. 30 The king of Israel spoke to Jehoshaphat. He said, ‘I’ll go into battle wearing different clothes. Then people won’t recognise me. But you wear your royal robes.’ So the king of Israel put on different clothes. Then he went into battle. 31 The king of Aram had given an order to his 32 chariot commanders. He had said, ‘Fight only against the king of Israel. Don’t fight against anyone else.’ 32 The chariot commanders saw Jehoshaphat. They thought, ‘That has to be the king of Israel.’ So they turned to attack him. But Jehoshaphat cried out. 33 Then the commanders saw he wasn’t the king of Israel after all. So they stopped chasing him. 34 But someone shot an arrow without taking aim. The arrow hit the king of Israel between the parts of his armour. The king told his chariot driver, ‘Turn the chariot around. Get me out of this battle. I’ve been wounded.’ 35 All day long the battle continued. The king kept himself standing up by leaning against the inside of his chariot. He kept his face towards the men of Aram. The blood from his wound ran down onto the floor of the chariot. That evening he died. 36 As the sun was setting, a cry spread through the army. ‘Every man must go to his own town!’ they said. ‘Every man must go to his own land!’ 37 So the king died. He was brought to Samaria. They buried him there. 38 They washed the chariot at a pool in Samaria. It was where the prostitutes took baths. The dogs licked up Ahab’s blood. It happened exactly as the LORD had said it would. 39 The other events of Ahab’s rule are written down. Everything he did is written down. That includes the palace he built and decorated with ivory. It also includes the cities he built up and put high walls around. All these things are written in the official records of the kings of Israel. 40 Ahab joined the members of his family who had already died. Ahab’s son Ahaziah became the next king after him.

Jehoshaphat king of Judah

41 Jehoshaphat began to rule over Judah. It was in the fourth year that Ahab was king of Israel. Jehoshaphat was the son of Asa. 42 Jehoshaphat was 35 years old when he became king. He ruled in Jerusalem for 25 years. His mother’s name was Azubah. She was the daughter of Shilhi. 43 Jehoshaphat followed all the ways of his father Asa. He didn’t wander away from them. He did what was right in the sight of the LORD. But the high places weren’t removed. The people continued to offer sacrifices and burn incense at them. 44 Jehoshaphat was also at peace with the king of Israel. 45 The other events of Jehoshaphat’s rule are written down. The brave things he did in battle and everything else he accomplished are written down. All these things are written in the official records of the kings of Judah. 46 Jehoshaphat got rid of the rest of the male prostitutes who were at the temples. They had remained in the land even after the rule of his father Asa. 47 At that time Edom didn’t have a king. An area governor was in charge. 48 Jehoshaphat built many ships that he used to carry goods to be traded. The ships were supposed to go to Ophir for gold. But they never had a chance to sail. They were wrecked at Ezion Geber. 49 At that time Ahaziah, the son of Ahab, spoke to Jehoshaphat. He said, ‘Let my men sail with yours.’ But Jehoshaphat refused. 50 Jehoshaphat joined the members of his family who had already died. He was buried in the family tomb in the city of King David. Jehoshaphat’s son Jehoram became the next king after him.

Ahaziah king of Israel

51 Ahaziah became king of Israel in Samaria. It was in the 17th year that Jehoshaphat was king of Judah. Ahaziah ruled over Israel for two years. He was the son of Ahab. 52 Ahaziah did what was evil in the sight of the LORD. He lived the way his father and mother had lived. He lived the way Jeroboam, the son of Nebat, had lived. Jeroboam had caused Israel to sin. 53 Ahaziah served and worshipped the god named Baal. He made the LORD, the God of Israel, very angry. That’s exactly what Ahaziah’s father had done.

Ahabs Krieg und Michas Weissagung

1 Und es vergingen drei Jahre, dass kein Krieg war zwischen den Aramäern und Israel. 2 Im dritten Jahr aber zog Joschafat, der König von Juda, hinab zum König von Israel. 3 Und der König von Israel sprach zu seinen Großen: Wisst ihr nicht, dass Ramot in Gilead unser ist, und wir sitzen still und nehmen es nicht dem König von Aram ab? 4 Und er sprach zu Joschafat: Willst du mit mir ziehen in den Kampf nach Ramot in Gilead? Joschafat sprach zum König von Israel: Ich will sein wie du und mein Volk wie dein Volk und meine Rosse wie deine Rosse. 5 Und Joschafat sprach zum König von Israel: Frage doch zuerst nach dem Wort des HERRN! 6 Da versammelte der König von Israel die Propheten, etwa vierhundert Mann, und sprach zu ihnen: Soll ich gegen Ramot in Gilead in den Kampf ziehen oder soll ich’s lassen? Sie sprachen: Zieh hinauf! Der Herr wird’s in die Hand des Königs geben. 7 Joschafat aber sprach: Ist hier kein Prophet des HERRN mehr, dass wir ihn befragen? 8 Der König von Israel sprach zu Joschafat: Es ist noch einer hier, Micha, der Sohn Jimlas, durch den man den HERRN befragen kann. Aber ich bin ihm gram; denn er weissagt mir nichts Gutes, sondern nur Unheil. Joschafat sprach: Der König rede so nicht! 9 Da rief der König von Israel einen Kämmerer und sprach: Bringe eilends her Micha, den Sohn Jimlas! 10 Der König von Israel aber und Joschafat, der König von Juda, saßen jeder auf seinem Thron in ihren königlichen Kleidern auf der Tenne vor dem Tor Samarias, und alle Propheten weissagten vor ihnen. 11 Und Zidkija, der Sohn Kenaanas, hatte sich eiserne Hörner gemacht und sprach: So spricht der HERR: Hiermit wirst du die Aramäer niederstoßen, bis du sie vernichtest. 12 Und alle Propheten weissagten ebenso und sprachen: Zieh hin nach Ramot in Gilead; es wird dir gelingen! Der HERR wird’s in die Hand des Königs geben. 13 Und der Bote, der hingegangen war, Micha zu rufen, sprach zu ihm: Siehe, die Worte der Propheten sind einmütig gut für den König; so lass nun auch dein Wort wie ihr Wort sein und rede Gutes. 14 Micha sprach: So wahr der HERR lebt: Ich will reden, was der HERR mir sagen wird. 15 Und als er zum König kam, sprach der König zu ihm: Micha, sollen wir nach Ramot in Gilead in den Kampf ziehen oder sollen wir’s lassen? Er sprach zu ihm: Ja, zieh hinauf, es soll dir gelingen! Der HERR wird’s in die Hand des Königs geben. 16 Der König entgegnete ihm: Wie oft soll ich dich beschwören, dass du mir im Namen des HERRN nichts als die Wahrheit sagst! 17 Micha sprach: Ich sah ganz Israel zerstreut auf den Bergen wie Schafe, die keinen Hirten haben. Der HERR aber sprach: Diese haben keinen Herrn; ein jeder kehre wieder heim mit Frieden. 18 Da sprach der König von Israel zu Joschafat: Hab ich dir nicht gesagt, dass er mir nichts Gutes weissagt, sondern nur Unheil? 19 Micha sprach: Darum höre nun das Wort des HERRN! Ich sah den HERRN sitzen auf seinem Thron und das ganze himmlische Heer neben ihm stehen zu seiner Rechten und Linken. 20 Und der HERR sprach: Wer will Ahab betören, dass er hinaufziehe und falle vor Ramot in Gilead? Und einer sagte dies, der andere das. 21 Da trat ein Geist vor und stellte sich vor den HERRN und sprach: Ich will ihn betören. Der HERR sprach zu ihm: Womit? 22 Er sprach: Ich will ausgehen und will ein Lügengeist sein im Munde aller seiner Propheten. Er sprach: Du sollst ihn betören und sollst es ausrichten; geh aus und tu das! 23 Nun siehe, der HERR hat einen Lügengeist gegeben in den Mund aller deiner Propheten; und der HERR hat Unheil gegen dich geredet. 24 Da trat herzu Zidkija, der Sohn Kenaanas, und schlug Micha auf die Backe und sprach: Wie? Ist der Geist des HERRN von mir gewichen, dass er mit dir redet? 25 Micha sprach: Wahrlich, an dem Tage wirst du’s sehen, wenn du von einer Kammer in die andere gehst, um dich zu verkriechen. 26 Der König von Israel sprach: Nimm Micha und bring ihn zu Amon, dem Stadthauptmann, und zu Joasch, dem Sohn des Königs, 27 und sprich: So spricht der König: Diesen werft in den Kerker und speist ihn nur kärglich mit Brot und Wasser, bis ich mit Frieden wiederkomme. 28 Micha sprach: Kommst du mit Frieden wieder, so hat der HERR nicht durch mich geredet. Und er sprach: Höret, alle Völker!

Ahabs Tod

29 So zogen der König von Israel und Joschafat, der König von Juda, hinauf nach Ramot in Gilead. 30 Und der König von Israel sprach zu Joschafat: Ich will mich verkleiden und in den Kampf ziehen, du aber behalte deine königlichen Kleider an. Und der König von Israel verkleidete sich und zog in den Kampf. 31 Aber der König von Aram gebot den Obersten über seine Wagen – es waren zweiunddreißig – und sprach: Ihr sollt nicht kämpfen gegen Geringe und Hohe, sondern allein gegen den König von Israel. 32 Und als die Obersten der Wagen Joschafat sahen, meinten sie, er wäre der König von Israel, und wandten sich gegen ihn zum Kampf, aber Joschafat schrie. 33 Als aber die Obersten der Wagen merkten, dass er nicht der König von Israel war, wandten sie sich von ihm ab. 34 Ein Mann aber spannte den Bogen von ungefähr und schoss den König von Israel zwischen Panzer und Wehrgehänge. Da sprach er zu seinem Wagenlenker: Wende um und führe mich aus dem Kampf, denn ich bin verwundet! 35 Aber der Kampf nahm immer mehr zu an demselben Tage, und der König blieb im Wagen stehen gegenüber den Aramäern. Am Abend aber starb er, und das Blut floss von der Wunde mitten in den Wagen. 36 Und man ließ ausrufen im Heer, als die Sonne unterging: Ein jeder gehe in seine Stadt und in sein Land; 37 denn der König ist tot! Und sie gingen nach Samaria und begruben den König zu Samaria. 38 Und als sie den Wagen wuschen bei dem Teich Samarias, leckten die Hunde sein Blut – und die Huren wuschen sich darin – nach dem Wort des HERRN, das er geredet hatte. 39 Was mehr von Ahab zu sagen ist und alles, was er getan hat, und das Elfenbeinhaus, das er baute, und alle Städte, die er gebaut hat, siehe, das steht geschrieben in der Chronik der Könige von Israel. 40 Also legte sich Ahab zu seinen Vätern, und sein Sohn Ahasja wurde König an seiner statt.

Joschafat, König von Juda

41 Und Joschafat, der Sohn Asas, wurde König über Juda im vierten Jahr Ahabs, des Königs von Israel. 42 Joschafat war fünfunddreißig Jahre alt, als er König wurde; und er regierte fünfundzwanzig Jahre zu Jerusalem. Seine Mutter hieß Asuba, eine Tochter Schilhis. 43 Und er wandelte in allen Wegen seines Vaters Asa und wich nicht davon ab und tat, was dem HERRN wohlgefiel. 44 Doch entfernte er nicht die Höhen, und das Volk opferte und räucherte noch auf den Höhen. 45 Und er hatte Frieden mit dem König von Israel. 46 Was aber mehr von Joschafat zu sagen ist und seine tapferen Taten, die er getan hat, und wie er Kriege geführt hat, siehe, das steht geschrieben in der Chronik der Könige von Juda. 47 Auch tat er aus dem Lande, was noch übrig war an Tempelhurern, die zur Zeit seines Vaters Asa übrig geblieben waren. 48 Und es war kein König in Edom; ein Statthalter war im Lande. 49 Und Joschafat hatte Tarsisschiffe machen lassen, die nach Ofir fahren sollten, um Gold zu holen. Aber sie fuhren nicht, denn sie zerschellten bei Ezjon-Geber. 50 Damals sprach Ahasja, der Sohn Ahabs, zu Joschafat: Lass meine Leute mit deinen Leuten auf den Schiffen fahren! Joschafat aber wollte nicht. 51 Und Joschafat legte sich zu seinen Vätern und wurde begraben bei seinen Vätern in der Stadt Davids, seines Vaters. Und sein Sohn Joram wurde König an seiner statt.

Ahasja, König von Israel

52 Ahasja, der Sohn Ahabs, wurde König über Israel zu Samaria im siebzehnten Jahr Joschafats, des Königs von Juda, und regierte über Israel zwei Jahre. 53 Und er tat, was dem HERRN missfiel, und wandelte in den Wegen seines Vaters und seiner Mutter und in dem Wege Jerobeams, des Sohnes Nebats, der Israel sündigen machte, 54 und diente dem Baal und betete ihn an und erzürnte den HERRN, den Gott Israels, wie sein Vater getan hatte.
