Jesus comes to Jerusalem as king

1 As they all approached Jerusalem, they came to Bethphage. It was on the Mount of Olives. Jesus sent out two disciples. 2 He said to them, ‘Go to the village ahead of you. As soon as you get there, you will find a donkey tied up. Her colt will be with her. Untie them and bring them to me. 3 If anyone says anything to you, say that the Lord needs them. The owner will send them right away.’ 4 This took place so that what was spoken through the prophet would come true. It says, 5 ‘Say to the city of Zion, “See, your king comes to you. He is gentle and riding on a donkey. He is riding on a donkey’s colt.” ’ 6 The disciples went and did what Jesus told them to do. 7 They brought the donkey and the colt. They placed their coats on them for Jesus to sit on. 8 A very large crowd spread their coats on the road. Others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9 Some of the people went ahead of him, and some followed. They all shouted, ‘Hosanna to the Son of David!’ ‘Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!’ ‘Hosanna in the highest heaven!’ 10 When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred up. The people asked, ‘Who is this?’ 11 The crowds answered, ‘This is Jesus. He is the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.’

Jesus clears out the temple

12 Jesus entered the temple courtyard. He began to drive out all those who were buying and selling there. He turned over the tables of the people who were exchanging money. He also turned over the benches of those who were selling doves. 13 He said to them, ‘It is written that the Lord said, “My house will be called a house where people can pray.” But you are making it “a den for robbers.” ’ 14 Blind people and those who were disabled came to Jesus at the temple. There he healed them. 15 The chief priests and the teachers of the law saw the wonderful things he did. They also saw the children in the temple courtyard shouting, ‘Hosanna to the Son of David!’ But when they saw all this, they became angry. 16 ‘Do you hear what these children are saying?’ they asked him. ‘Yes’, replied Jesus. ‘Haven’t you ever read about it in Scripture? It says, ‘ “Lord, you have made sure that children and infants praise you.” ’ 17 Then Jesus left the people and went out of the city to Bethany. He spent the night there.

Jesus makes a fig tree dry up

18 Early in the morning, Jesus was on his way back to Jerusalem. He was hungry. 19 He saw a fig tree by the road. He went up to it but found nothing on it except leaves. Then he said to it, ‘May you never bear fruit again!’ Right away the tree dried up. 20 When the disciples saw this, they were amazed. ‘How did the fig tree dry up so quickly?’ they asked. 21 Jesus replied, ‘What I’m about to tell you is true. You must have faith and not doubt. Then you can do what was done to the fig tree. And you can say to this mountain, “Go and throw yourself into the sea.” It will be done. 22 If you believe, you will receive what you ask for when you pray.’

The authority of Jesus is questioned

23 Jesus entered the temple courtyard. While he was teaching there, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him. ‘By what authority are you doing these things?’ they asked. ‘Who gave you this authority?’ 24 Jesus replied, ‘I will also ask you one question. If you answer me, I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things. 25 Where did John’s baptism come from? Was it from heaven? Or did it come from human authority?’ They talked to one another about it. They said, ‘If we say, “From heaven”, he will ask, “Then why didn’t you believe him?” 26 But what if we say, “From human authority”? We are afraid of the people. Everyone believes that John was a prophet.’ 27 So they answered Jesus, ‘We don’t know.’ Jesus said, ‘Then I won’t tell you by what authority I am doing these things either.

The story of the two sons

28 ‘What do you think about this? A man had two sons. He went to the first and said, “Son, go and work today in the vineyard.” 29 ‘ “I will not,” the son answered. But later he changed his mind and went. 30 ‘Then the father went to the other son. He said the same thing. The son answered, “I will, sir.” But he did not go. 31 ‘Which of the two sons did what his father wanted?’ ‘The first’, they answered. Jesus said to them, ‘What I’m about to tell you is true. Tax collectors and prostitutes will enter the kingdom of God ahead of you. 32 John came to show you the right way to live. And you did not believe him. But the tax collectors and the prostitutes did. You saw this. But even then you did not turn away from your sins and believe him.

The story of the tenants

33 ‘Listen to another story. A man who owned some land planted a vineyard. He put a wall around it. He dug a pit for a winepress in it. He also built a lookout tower. He rented the vineyard out to some farmers. Then he moved to another place. 34 When harvest time approached, he sent his slaves to the tenants. He told the slaves to collect his share of the fruit. 35 ‘But the tenants grabbed his slaves. They beat one of them. They killed another. They threw stones at the third to kill him. 36 Then the man sent other slaves to the tenants. He sent more than he did the first time. The tenants treated them the same way. 37 Last of all, he sent his son to them. “They will respect my son,” he said. 38 ‘But the tenants saw the son coming. They said to one another, “This is the one who will receive all the owner’s property someday. Come, let’s kill him. Then everything will be ours.” 39 So they took him and threw him out of the vineyard. Then they killed him. 40 ‘When the owner of the vineyard comes back, what will he do to those tenants?’ 41 ‘He will destroy those evil people,’ they replied. ‘Then he will rent the vineyard out to other tenants. They will give him his share of the crop at harvest time.’ 42 Jesus said to them, ‘Haven’t you ever read what the Scriptures say, ‘ “The stone the builders didn’t accept has become the most important stone of all. The Lord has done it. It is wonderful in our eyes”? 43 ‘So here is what I tell you. The kingdom of God will be taken away from you. It will be given to people who will produce its fruit. 44 Anyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces. But the stone will crush anyone it falls on.’ 45 The chief priests and the Pharisees heard Jesus’ stories. They knew he was talking about them. 46 So they looked for a way to arrest him. But they were afraid of the crowd. The people believed that Jesus was a prophet.

Jesus zieht in Jerusalem ein

1 Kurz vor Jerusalem kamen sie zu der Ortschaft Betfage am Ölberg. Dort schickte Jesus zwei Jünger fort 2 mit dem Auftrag: »Geht in das Dorf da drüben! Gleich am Ortseingang findet ihr eine Eselin und ihr Junges angebunden. Bindet beide los und bringt sie zu mir! 3 Und wenn jemand etwas sagt, dann antwortet: ›Der Herr braucht sie.‹ Dann wird man sie euch sofort geben.« 4 Damit sollte in Erfüllung gehen, was der Prophet angekündigt hatte: 5 »Sagt der Zionsstadt: Dein König kommt jetzt zu dir! Er verzichtet auf Gewalt. Er reitet auf einem Esel und auf einem Eselsfohlen, dem Jungen eines Lasttiers.« 6 Die beiden Jünger gingen hin und taten, was Jesus ihnen aufgetragen hatte. 7 Sie brachten die Eselin und ihr Junges und legten ihre Kleider darüber, und Jesus setzte sich darauf. 8 Viele Menschen aus der Menge breiteten ihre Kleider als Teppich auf die Straße, andere rissen Zweige von den Bäumen und legten sie auf den Weg. 9 Die Menschenmenge, die Jesus vorauslief und ihm folgte, rief immer wieder: »Gepriesen sei der Sohn Davids! Heil dem, der im Auftrag des Herrn kommt! Gepriesen sei Gott in der Höhe!« 10 Als Jesus in Jerusalem einzog, geriet alles in helle Aufregung. »Wer ist dieser Mann?«, fragten die Leute in der Stadt. 11 Die Menge, die Jesus begleitete, rief: »Das ist der Prophet Jesus aus Nazaret in Galiläa!«

Jesus im Tempel

12 Jesus ging in den Tempel und trieb alle Händler und Käufer hinaus. Er stieß die Tische der Geldwechsler und die Stände der Taubenverkäufer um 13 und sagte zu ihnen: »In den Heiligen Schriften steht, dass Gott erklärt hat: ›Mein Tempel soll eine Stätte sein, an der die Menschen zu mir beten können!‹ Ihr aber macht eine Räuberhöhle daraus!« 14 Dann kamen dort im Tempel Blinde und Gelähmte zu ihm, und er heilte sie. 15 Die führenden Priester und die Gesetzeslehrer sahen die Wunder, die Jesus tat, und sie hörten, wie die Kinder im Tempel laut riefen: »Gepriesen sei der Sohn Davids!« Da wurden sie wütend 16 und fragten Jesus: »Hörst du, was die da rufen?« Jesus sagte zu ihnen: »Gewiss! Habt ihr denn nie gelesen, was in den Heiligen Schriften steht: ›Du, Gott, sorgst dafür, dass die Unmündigen und die kleinen Kinder dich preisen‹?« 17 Damit ließ er sie stehen, ging aus der Stadt hinaus und übernachtete in Betanien.

Der Feigenbaum: Vorzeichen des Gerichts über Israel. Aufruf zum Vertrauen

18 Früh am nächsten Morgen kehrte Jesus nach Jerusalem zurück. Unterwegs bekam er Hunger. 19 Als er einen Feigenbaum am Straßenrand sah, ging er hin; aber er fand nichts als Blätter daran. Da sagte er zu dem Baum: »Du sollst niemals mehr Frucht tragen!« Und sofort verdorrte der Baum. 20 Voller Staunen sahen es die Jünger und fragten: »Wie konnte der Baum so plötzlich verdorren?« 21 Jesus antwortete ihnen: »Ich versichere euch: Wenn ihr Vertrauen zu Gott habt und nicht zweifelt, könnt ihr nicht nur tun, was ich mit diesem Feigenbaum getan habe. Ihr könnt dann sogar zu diesem Berg sagen: ›Auf, stürze dich ins Meer!‹, und es wird geschehen. 22 Wenn ihr nur Vertrauen habt, werdet ihr alles bekommen, worum ihr Gott bittet.«

Woher hat Jesus die Vollmacht?

23 Jesus ging wieder in den Tempel. Während er dort die Menschen lehrte, traten die führenden Priester und die Ältesten des Volkes an ihn heran und fragten: »Woher nimmst du das Recht, hier so aufzutreten? Wer hat dir die Vollmacht dazu gegeben?« 24 Jesus antwortete: »Auch ich will euch eine Frage stellen. Wenn ihr sie mir beantwortet, werde ich euch sagen, mit welchem Recht ich so handle. 25 Sagt mir: Woher hatte der Täufer Johannes den Auftrag, zu taufen? Von Gott oder von Menschen?« Sie überlegten: »Wenn wir sagen ›Von Gott‹, wird er uns fragen: Warum habt ihr dann Johannes nicht geglaubt? 26 Wenn wir aber sagen ›Von Menschen‹, dann haben wir die Menge gegen uns, weil alle überzeugt sind, dass Johannes ein Prophet war.« 27 So sagten sie zu Jesus: »Wir wissen es nicht.« »Gut«, erwiderte Jesus, »dann sage ich euch auch nicht, wer mich bevollmächtigt hat.«

Das Gleichnis von den beiden Söhnen

28 Dann sagte Jesus: »Was meint ihr zu folgender Geschichte? Ein Mann hatte zwei Söhne. Er sagte zu dem einen: ›Mein Sohn, geh und arbeite heute im Weinberg!‹ 29 ›Ich will nicht‹, erwiderte der Sohn; später aber überlegte er es sich und ging doch. 30 Dasselbe sagte der Vater auch zu seinem anderen Sohn. ›Ja, Herr‹, antwortete der, ging aber nicht. 31 Wer von den beiden hat nun nach dem Willen des Vaters gehandelt?« »Der Erste«, antworteten sie. Da sagte Jesus: »Ich versichere euch: Die Zolleinnehmer und die Prostituierten werden eher in die neue Welt Gottes* kommen als ihr. 32 Der Täufer Johannes ist gekommen und zeigte euch, was ihr jetzt tun müsst, um Gottes Willen zu erfüllen;* aber ihr habt ihm nicht geglaubt. Die Zolleinnehmer und die Prostituierten haben ihm geglaubt! Aber ihr – nicht einmal als ihr das saht, habt ihr euch besonnen und ihm Glauben geschenkt.«

Das Gleichnis von den bösen Weinbergspächtern

33 »Hört ein anderes Gleichnis: Ein Grundbesitzer legte einen Weinberg an, machte einen Zaun darum, baute eine Weinpresse und errichtete einen Wachtturm. Dann verpachtete er den Weinberg und verreiste. 34 Zur Zeit der Weinlese schickte er seine Boten zu den Pächtern, um den Ertrag abholen zu lassen. 35 Die Pächter aber packten die Boten, verprügelten den einen, schlugen einen anderen tot, und wieder einen anderen steinigten sie. 36 Noch einmal schickte der Besitzer Boten, mehr als beim ersten Mal; doch mit denen machten sie es genauso. 37 Schließlich schickte er seinen Sohn, weil er dachte: ›Vor meinem Sohn werden sie Respekt haben.‹ 38 Aber als die Pächter den Sohn kommen sahen, sagten sie zueinander: ›Das ist der Erbe! Wir bringen ihn um und nehmen seine Erbschaft, den Weinberg, in Besitz.‹ 39 So packten sie ihn, stießen ihn aus dem Weinberg hinaus und töteten ihn. 40 Was wird nun der Besitzer des Weinbergs mit den Pächtern machen, wenn er selbst kommt?«, fragte Jesus. 41 Sie sagten: »Er wird diesen Verbrechern ein schreckliches Ende bereiten und den Weinberg anderen anvertrauen, die ihm zur Erntezeit seinen Ertrag pünktlich abliefern!« 42 Jesus sagte zu ihnen: »Ihr habt ja wohl gelesen, was in den Heiligen Schriften steht: ›Der Stein, den die Bauleute als wertlos weggeworfen haben, ist zum Eckstein geworden. Der Herr hat dieses Wunder vollbracht, und wir haben es gesehen.‹ 43 Darum sage ich euch: Das Vorrecht, Gottes Volk unter Gottes Herrschaft zu sein, wird euch entzogen. Es wird einem Volk gegeben, das tut, was dieser Berufung entspricht.* 44 Wer auf diesen Stein stürzt, wird zerschmettert, und auf wen er fällt, den zermalmt er.« 45 Die führenden Priester und die Pharisäer merkten, dass die beiden Gleichnisse auf sie gemünzt waren. 46 Sie hätten Jesus gerne festgenommen, wagten es aber nicht, weil die Menge ihn für einen Propheten hielt.
