Jesus forgives and heals a man who could not walk

1 A few days later, Jesus entered Capernaum again. The people heard that he had come home. 2 So many people gathered that there was no room left. There was not even room outside the door. And Jesus preached the word to them. 3 Four of those who came were carrying a man who could not walk. 4 But they could not get him close to Jesus because of the crowd. So they made a hole by digging through the roof above Jesus. Then they lowered the man through it on a mat. 5 Jesus saw their faith. So he said to the man, ‘Son, your sins are forgiven.’ 6 Some teachers of the law were sitting there. They were thinking, 7 ‘Why is this fellow talking like that? He’s saying a very evil thing! Only God can forgive sins!’ 8 Right away Jesus knew what they were thinking. So he said to them, ‘Why are you thinking these things? 9 Is it easier to say to this man, “Your sins are forgiven”? Or to say, “Get up, take your mat and walk”? 10 But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.’ So Jesus spoke to the man who could not walk. 11 ‘I tell you,’ he said, ‘get up. Take your mat and go home.’ 12 The man got up and took his mat. Then he walked away while everyone watched. All the people were amazed. They praised God and said, ‘We have never seen anything like this!’

Jesus chooses Levi and eats with sinners

13 Once again Jesus went out beside the Sea of Galilee. A large crowd came to him. He began to teach them. 14 As he walked along he saw Levi, the son of Alphaeus. Levi was sitting at the tax collector’s booth. ‘Follow me’, Jesus told him. Levi got up and followed him. 15 Later Jesus was having dinner at Levi’s house. Many tax collectors and sinners were eating with him and his disciples. They were part of the large crowd following Jesus. 16 Some teachers of the law who were Pharisees were there. They saw Jesus eating with sinners and tax collectors. So they asked his disciples, ‘Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?’ 17 Jesus heard that. So he said to them, ‘Those who are healthy don’t need a doctor. Ill people do. I have not come to get those who think they are right with God to follow me. I have come to get sinners to follow me.’

Jesus is asked about fasting

18 John’s disciples and the Pharisees were going without eating. Some people came to Jesus. They said to him, ‘John’s disciples are fasting. The disciples of the Pharisees are also fasting. But your disciples are not. Why aren’t they?’ 19 Jesus answered, ‘How can the guests of the groom go without eating while he is with them? They will not fast as long as he is with them. 20 But the time will come when the groom will be taken away from them. On that day they will go without eating. 21 ‘No one sews a patch of new cloth on old clothes. Otherwise, the new piece will pull away from the old. That will make the tear worse. 22 No one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the wine will burst the skins. Then the wine and the wineskins will both be destroyed. No, people pour new wine into new wineskins.’

Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath day

23 One Sabbath day Jesus was walking with his disciples through the cornfields. The disciples began to break off some ears of corn. 24 The Pharisees said to Jesus, ‘Look! It is against the Law to do this on the Sabbath day. Why are your disciples doing it?’ 25 He answered, ‘Haven’t you ever read about what David did? He and his men were hungry. They needed food. 26 It was when Abiathar was high priest. David entered the house of God and ate the holy bread. Only priests were allowed to eat it. David also gave some to his men.’ 27 Then Jesus said to them, ‘The Sabbath day was made for man. Man was not made for the Sabbath day. 28 So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath day.’

Jesus heilt einen Gelähmten

1 Einige Tage später kam Jesus nach Kafarnaum zurück, und bald wusste jeder, dass er wieder zu Hause* war. 2 Die Menschen strömten so zahlreich zusammen, dass kein Platz mehr blieb, nicht einmal draußen vor der Tür. Jesus verkündete ihnen die Botschaft Gottes. 3 Da brachten vier Männer einen Gelähmten herbei, 4 aber sie kamen wegen der Menschenmenge nicht bis zu Jesus durch. Darum stiegen sie auf das flache Dach, gruben die Lehmdecke auf und beseitigten das Holzgeflecht, genau über der Stelle, wo Jesus war. Dann ließen sie den Gelähmten auf seiner Matte durch das Loch hinunter. 5 Als Jesus sah, wie groß ihr Vertrauen war, sagte er zu dem Gelähmten: »Mein Kind, deine Schuld ist vergeben!« 6 Da saßen aber einige Gesetzeslehrer, die dachten bei sich: 7 »Was nimmt der sich heraus! Das ist eine Gotteslästerung! Nur Gott kann den Menschen ihre Schuld vergeben, sonst niemand!« 8 Jesus erkannte sofort, dass sie das dachten, und fragte sie: »Was macht ihr euch da für Gedanken? 9 Was ist leichter – diesem Gelähmten zu sagen: ›Deine Schuld ist dir vergeben‹, oder: ›Steh auf, nimm deine Matte und geh umher‹? 10 Aber ihr sollt sehen, dass der Menschensohn die Vollmacht hat, hier auf der Erde Schuld zu vergeben!« Und er sagte zu dem Gelähmten: 11 »Ich befehle dir: Steh auf, nimm deine Matte und geh nach Hause!« 12 Der Mann stand auf, nahm seine Matte und ging vor aller Augen weg. Da waren sie alle außer sich; sie priesen Gott und sagten: »So etwas haben wir noch nie erlebt!«

Jesus beruft Levi und isst mit den Zolleinnehmern

13 Dann ging Jesus wieder hinaus an den See. Alle kamen zu ihm und er sprach zu ihnen. 14 Als er weiterging, sah er einen Zolleinnehmer an der Zollstelle sitzen: Levi, den Sohn von Alphäus. Jesus sagte zu ihm: »Komm, folge mir!« Und Levi stand auf und folgte ihm. 15 Als Jesus dann in seinem Haus* zu Tisch saß, waren auch viele Zolleinnehmer dabei und andere, die einen ebenso schlechten Ruf hatten. Sie alle aßen zusammen mit Jesus und seinen Jüngern. – Was die Zahl der Jünger betrifft: Es waren inzwischen viele, die sich Jesus angeschlossen hatten. 16 Die Gesetzeslehrer von der Partei der Pharisäer sahen, wie Jesus mit diesen Leuten zusammen aß. Sie fragten seine Jünger: »Wie kann er sich mit den Zolleinnehmern und ähnlichem Volk an einen Tisch setzen?« 17 Jesus hörte es und er antwortete ihnen: »Nicht die Gesunden brauchen den Arzt, sondern die Kranken. Ich bin nicht gekommen, solche Menschen in Gottes neue Welt einzuladen,* bei denen alles in Ordnung ist, sondern solche, die Gott den Rücken gekehrt haben.«

Die Hochzeit hat begonnen

18 Es war an einem Tag, an dem die Jünger des Täufers Johannes und die Pharisäer fasteten. Da kamen Leute zu Jesus und fragten ihn: »Wie kommt es, dass die Jünger des Täufers und die Jünger der Pharisäer regelmäßig fasten, aber deine Jünger fasten nicht?« 19 Jesus antwortete: »Können die Hochzeitsgäste fasten, während der Bräutigam unter ihnen ist? Unmöglich können sie das, solange er bei ihnen ist! 20 Die Zeit kommt früh genug, dass der Bräutigam ihnen entrissen wird; dann werden sie fasten, immer an jenem Tag.* 21 Niemand flickt ein altes Kleid mit einem neuen Stück Stoff; sonst reißt das neue Stück wieder aus und macht das Loch nur noch größer. 22 Auch füllt niemand neuen Wein, der noch gärt, in alte Schläuche; sonst sprengt der Wein die Schläuche, der Wein ist hin und die Schläuche auch. Nein, neuer Wein gehört in neue Schläuche!«

Jesus und der Sabbat

23 An einem Sabbat ging Jesus durch die Felder. Seine Jünger fingen unterwegs an, Ähren abzureißen und die Körner zu essen. 24 Die Pharisäer sagten zu Jesus: »Da sieh dir an, was sie tun! Das ist nach dem Gesetz am Sabbat verboten!« 25 Jesus antwortete ihnen: »Habt ihr nie gelesen, was David tat, als er und seine Männer hungrig waren und etwas zu essen brauchten? 26 Er ging in das Haus Gottes und aß von den geweihten Broten, damals, als Abjatar Oberster Priester war. Nach dem Gesetz dürfen doch nur die Priester dieses Brot essen – und trotzdem aß David davon und gab es auch seinen Begleitern!« 27 Jesus fügte hinzu: »Gott hat den Sabbat für den Menschen geschaffen, nicht den Menschen für den Sabbat. 28 Also ist der Menschensohn Herr auch über den Sabbat; er hat zu bestimmen, was an diesem Tag getan werden darf.«*
