Jesus chooses his first disciples

1 One day Jesus was standing by the Sea of Galilee. The people crowded around him and listened to the word of God. 2 Jesus saw two boats at the edge of the water. They had been left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets. 3 He got into the boat that belonged to Simon. Jesus asked him to go out a little way from shore. Then he sat down in the boat and taught the people. 4 When he finished speaking, he turned to Simon. Jesus said, ‘Go out into deep water. Let down the nets so you can catch some fish.’ 5 Simon answered, ‘Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.’ 6 When they had done so, they caught a large number of fish. There were so many that their nets began to break. 7 So they motioned to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. They came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink. 8 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees. ‘Go away from me, Lord!’ he said. ‘I am a sinful man!’ 9 He and everyone with him were amazed at the number of fish they had caught. 10 So were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who worked with Simon. Then Jesus said to Simon, ‘Don’t be afraid. From now on you will fish for people.’ 11 So they pulled their boats up on shore. Then they left everything and followed him.

Jesus heals a man who had a skin disease

12 While Jesus was in one of the towns, a man came along. He had a skin disease all over his body. When he saw Jesus, the man fell with his face to the ground. He begged him, ‘Lord, if you are willing to make me “clean”, you can do it.’ 13 Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. ‘I am willing to do it,’ he said. ‘Be “clean”!’ Right away the disease left him. 14 Then Jesus ordered him, ‘Don’t tell anyone. Go and show yourself to the priest. Offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded. It will be a witness to the priest and the people that you are “clean”. ’ 15 But the news about Jesus spread even more. So crowds of people came to hear him. They also came to be healed of their diseases. 16 But Jesus often went away to be by himself and pray.

Jesus forgives and heals a man who could not walk

17 One day Jesus was teaching. Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting there. They had come from every village of Galilee and from Judea and Jerusalem. They heard that the Lord had given Jesus the power to heal those who were ill. 18 So some men came carrying a man who could not walk. He was lying on a mat. They tried to take him into the house to place him in front of Jesus. 19 They could not find a way to do this because of the crowd. So they went up on the roof. Then they lowered the man on his mat through the opening in the roof tiles. They lowered him into the middle of the crowd, right in front of Jesus. 20 When Jesus saw that they had faith, he spoke to the man. He said, ‘Friend, your sins are forgiven.’ 21 The Pharisees and the teachers of the law began to think, ‘Who is this fellow who says such an evil thing? Who can forgive sins but God alone?’ 22 Jesus knew what they were thinking. So he asked, ‘Why are you thinking these things in your hearts? 23 Is it easier to say, “Your sins are forgiven”? Or to say, “Get up and walk”? 24 But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.’ So he spoke to the man who could not walk. ‘I tell you,’ he said, ‘get up. Take your mat and go home.’ 25 Right away, the man stood up in front of them. He took his mat and went home praising God. 26 Everyone was amazed and gave praise to God. They were filled with wonder. They said, ‘We have seen unusual things today.’

Jesus chooses Levi and eats with sinners

27 After this, Jesus left the house. He saw a tax collector sitting at the tax booth. The man’s name was Levi. ‘Follow me’, Jesus said to him. 28 Levi got up, left everything and followed him. 29 Then Levi gave a huge banquet for Jesus at his house. A large crowd of tax collectors and others were eating with them. 30 But the Pharisees and their teachers of the law complained to Jesus’ disciples. They said, ‘Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?’ 31 Jesus answered them, ‘Healthy people don’t need a doctor. Ill people do. 32 I have not come to get those who think they are right with God to follow me. I have come to get sinners to turn away from their sins.’

Jesus is asked about fasting

33 Some of the people who were there said to Jesus, ‘John’s disciples often pray and go without eating. So do the disciples of the Pharisees. But yours go on eating and drinking.’ 34 Jesus answered, ‘Can you make the friends of the groom fast while he is with them? 35 But the time will come when the groom will be taken away from them. In those days they will go without eating.’ 36 Then Jesus gave them an example. He said, ‘No one tears a piece out of new clothes to patch old clothes. Otherwise, they will tear the new clothes. Also, the patch from the new clothes will not match the old clothes. 37 No one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins. The wine will run out, and the wineskins will be destroyed. 38 No, new wine must be poured into new wineskins. 39 After drinking old wine, no one wants the new. They say, “The old wine is better.” ’

Die ersten Jünger

1 Eines Tages stand Jesus am Ufer des Sees von Gennesaret. Die Menschen drängten sich um ihn und wollten Gottes Botschaft hören. 2 Da sah er zwei Boote am Ufer liegen. Die Fischer waren ausgestiegen und reinigten ihre Netze. 3 Er stieg in das eine der Boote, das Simon gehörte, und bat ihn, ein Stück vom Ufer abzustoßen. Dann setzte er sich und sprach vom Boot aus zu der Menschenmenge. 4 Als er seine Rede beendet hatte, sagte er zu Simon: »Fahr hinaus auf den See und wirf mit deinen Leuten die Netze zum Fang aus!« 5 Simon erwiderte: »Herr, wir haben uns die ganze Nacht abgemüht und nichts gefangen. Aber weil du es sagst, will ich die Netze noch einmal auswerfen.« 6 Sie taten es und fingen so viele Fische, dass die Netze zu reißen drohten. 7 Sie mussten die Fischer im anderen Boot zur Hilfe herbeiwinken. Schließlich waren beide Boote so überladen, dass sie fast untergingen. 8 Als Simon Petrus das sah, warf er sich vor Jesus nieder und bat: »Herr, geh fort von mir! Ich bin ein sündiger Mensch!« 9 Denn ihn und alle anderen, die bei ihm im Boot waren, hatte die Furcht gepackt, weil sie einen so gewaltigen Fang gemacht hatten. 10 So ging es auch denen aus dem anderen Boot, Jakobus und Johannes, den Söhnen von Zebedäus, die mit Simon zusammenarbeiteten. Jesus aber sagte zu Simon: »Hab keine Angst! Von jetzt an wirst du Menschen fischen!« 11 Da zogen sie die Boote an Land, ließen alles zurück und folgten Jesus.

Jesus heilt einen Aussätzigen

12 In einer der Ortschaften traf Jesus einen Mann, der am ganzen Körper den Aussatz hatte. Als er Jesus sah, warf er sich vor ihm nieder, das Gesicht zur Erde, und flehte ihn an: »Herr, wenn du willst, kannst du mich gesund* machen!« 13 Jesus streckte die Hand aus und berührte ihn. »Ich will«, sagte er, »sei gesund!« Im selben Augenblick verschwand der Aussatz. 14 Jesus befahl ihm, niemand etwas zu sagen. »Sondern geh zum Priester«, sagte er, »lass dir von ihm deine Heilung bestätigen und bring die Opfer, die Mose zur Wiederherstellung der Reinheit vorgeschrieben hat. So sollen alle erfahren, dass du geheilt worden bist.«* 15 Darauf verbreitete sich die Nachricht von Jesus noch mehr. Scharenweise kamen die Menschen, um ihn zu hören und sich von ihren Krankheiten heilen zu lassen. 16 Aber Jesus zog sich zurück und hielt sich in einsamen Gegenden auf, um zu beten.

Jesus heilt einen Gelähmten

17 Während dieser Zeit geschah einmal Folgendes: Jesus sprach gerade zu den Menschen, und vor ihm saßen Pharisäer und Gesetzeslehrer, die aus allen Ortschaften Galiläas und Judäas und sogar aus Jerusalem gekommen waren. In Jesus war Gottes Kraft am Werk und trieb ihn dazu, Kranke zu heilen. 18 Da brachten einige Männer einen Gelähmten auf einer Tragbahre herbei. Sie wollten ihn in das Haus hineintragen und vor Jesus niederlegen. 19 Aber wegen der Menschenmenge konnten sie nicht bis zu Jesus durchkommen. So stiegen sie auf das Dach, deckten einige Ziegel ab und ließen die Bahre mit dem Kranken mitten in der Menge genau vor Jesus nieder. 20 Als Jesus sah, wie groß ihr Vertrauen war, sagte er zu dem Kranken: »Du Mensch, deine Schuld ist dir vergeben!« 21 Die Gesetzeslehrer und Pharisäer dachten: »Was maßt der sich an, dass er eine solche Gotteslästerung auszusprechen wagt! Nur Gott kann den Menschen ihre Schuld vergeben, sonst niemand!« 22 Aber Jesus wusste, was sie dachten, und fragte sie: »Was macht ihr euch da für Gedanken? 23 Was ist leichter – zu sagen: ›Deine Schuld ist dir vergeben‹, oder: ›Steh auf und geh umher‹? 24 Aber ihr sollt sehen, dass der Menschensohn die Vollmacht hat, hier auf der Erde Schuld zu vergeben!« Und er sagte zu dem Gelähmten: »Ich befehle dir: Steh auf, nimm deine Tragbahre und geh nach Hause!« 25 Sofort stand der Mann vor aller Augen auf, nahm die Bahre, auf der er gelegen hatte, und ging nach Hause. Dabei pries er Gott. 26 Eine große Erregung erfasste alle, die versammelt waren, und auch sie priesen Gott. Von Furcht erfüllt, sagten sie: »Unglaubliche Dinge haben wir heute erlebt!«

Jesus beruft Levi und isst mit den Zolleinnehmern

27 Als Jesus danach die Stadt verließ, sah er einen Zolleinnehmer an der Zollstelle sitzen. Er hieß Levi. Jesus sagte zu ihm: »Komm, folge mir!« 28 Und Levi ließ alles zurück, stand auf und folgte Jesus. 29 Später gab Levi für Jesus ein großes Festessen in seinem Haus. Daran nahmen viele seiner bisherigen Kollegen und andere Bekannte teil. 30 Die Pharisäer, besonders die Gesetzeslehrer unter ihnen, murrten darüber und sagten zu den Jüngern: »Warum esst und trinkt ihr mit den Zolleinnehmern und ähnlichem Volk?« 31 Aber Jesus antwortete ihnen: »Nicht die Gesunden brauchen den Arzt, sondern die Kranken. 32 Ich bin nicht gekommen, solche Menschen in Gottes neue Welt einzuladen, bei denen alles in Ordnung ist, sondern solche, die Gott den Rücken gekehrt haben. Sie soll ich dazu aufrufen, ihr Leben zu ändern.«*

Die Hochzeit hat begonnen

33 Darauf hielten die Pharisäer und ihre Gesetzeslehrer Jesus vor: »Die Jünger des Täufers Johannes fasten oft und verrichten Gebete, so wie es auch unsere Jünger tun. Aber deine Jünger essen und trinken!« 34 Jesus antwortete: »Ihr könnt doch nicht verlangen, dass die Hochzeitsgäste fasten, solange der Bräutigam da ist! 35 Die Zeit kommt früh genug, dass der Bräutigam ihnen entrissen wird; dann werden sie fasten.« 36 Jesus erklärte ihnen das Verhalten seiner Jünger noch weiter in Bildern; er sagte:* »Niemand schneidet ein Stück von einem neuen Kleid ab, um damit ein altes zu flicken. Sonst hat er das neue Kleid zerschnitten, und zu dem alten passt der Flicken von dem neuen gar nicht. 37 Auch füllt niemand neuen Wein, der noch gärt, in alte Schläuche. Sonst sprengt der neue Wein die alten Schläuche; der Wein fließt aus und auch die Schläuche sind hin. 38 Nein, neuer Wein gehört in neue Schläuche! 39 Aber niemand, der alten Wein getrunken hat, wird danach neuen haben wollen. Denn er wird sagen: ›Der alte ist besser.‹«
