1The LORD says, ‘Go up and down the streets of Jerusalem. Look around. Think about what you see. Search through the market. See if you can find one honest person who tries to be truthful. If you can, I will forgive this city.2They make their promises in my name. They say, “You can be sure that the LORD is alive.” But their promises can’t be trusted.’3LORD, don’t your eyes look for truth? You struck down your people. But they didn’t feel any pain. You crushed them. But they refused to be corrected. They made their faces harder than stone. They refused to turn away from their sins.4I thought, ‘The people of Jerusalem are foolish. They don’t know how the LORD wants them to live. They don’t know what their God requires of them.5So I will go to the leaders. I’ll speak to them. They should know how the LORD wants them to live. They must know what their God requires of them.’ But all of them had broken off the yoke the LORD had put on them. They had torn off the ropes he had tied them up with.6So a lion from the forest will attack them. A wolf from the desert will destroy them. A leopard will hide and wait near their towns. It will tear to pieces anyone who dares to go out. Again and again they have refused to obey the LORD. They have turned away from him many times.7The LORD says, ‘Jerusalem, why should I forgive you? Your people have deserted me. They have made their promises in the names of gods that are not really gods at all. I supplied everything they needed. But they committed adultery. Large crowds went to the houses of prostitutes.8Your people are like stallions that have plenty to eat. Their sinful desires are out of control. Each of them goes after another man’s wife.9Shouldn’t I punish them for this?’ announces the LORD. ‘Shouldn’t I pay back the nation that does these things?10‘Armies of Babylon, go through their vineyards and destroy them. But do not destroy them completely. Strip off their branches. These people do not belong to me.11The people of Israel and the people of Judah have not been faithful to me at all,’ announces the LORD.12They have told lies about the LORD. They said, ‘He won’t do anything! No harm will come to us. We will never see war or be hungry.13The prophets are nothing but wind. Their message doesn’t come from the LORD. So let what they say will happen be done to them.’14The LORD God rules over all. He says to me, ‘The people have spoken these words. So my words will be like fire in your mouth. I will make the people like wood. And the fire will burn them up.’15‘People of Israel, listen to me,’ announces the LORD. ‘I am bringing against you a nation from far away. It is an old nation. And it will last for a long time. Its people speak a language you do not know. You can’t understand what they are saying.16The bags they carry their arrows in are like an open grave. All their soldiers are mighty.17They will eat up your crops and your food. They will strike down your sons and daughters. They will kill your sheep and cattle. They will destroy your vines and fig-trees. You trust in your cities that have high walls around them. But the people in them will be killed by swords.18‘In spite of that, even in those days I will not destroy you completely,’ announces the LORD.19‘ “Jeremiah”, the people will ask, “Why has the LORD our God done all this to us?” Then you will tell them, “You have deserted the LORD. You have served other gods in your own land. So now you will serve another nation in a land that is not your own.”20‘Here is what I want you to announce to the people of Jacob. Tell it in Judah. Tell them I say,21“Listen to this, you foolish people, who do not have any sense. You have eyes, but you do not see. You have ears, but you do not hear.22Shouldn’t you have respect for me?” announces the LORD. “Shouldn’t you tremble with fear in front of me? I made the sand to hold the ocean back. It will do that for ever. The ocean can’t go past it. The waves might roll, but they can’t sweep over it. They might roar, but they can’t go across it.23But you people have stubborn hearts. You refuse to obey me. You have turned away from me. You have gone astray.24You do not say to yourselves, ‘Let us have respect for the LORD our God. He sends rain in the autumn and the spring. He promises us that the harvest will come at the same time each year.’25But the things you have done wrong have robbed you of these gifts. Your sins have kept these good things far away from you.”26‘Jeremiah, some of my people are evil. They hide and wait just as people hide to catch birds. They set traps for people.27A hunter uses tricks to fill his cage with birds. And my people have filled their houses with a lot of goods. They have become rich and powerful.28They have grown fat and heavy. There is no limit to the evil things they do. In court they do not seek justice. They don’t protect the rights of children whose fathers have died. They do not stand up for poor people.29Shouldn’t I punish them for this?’ announces the LORD. ‘Shouldn’t I pay back the nation that does these things?30‘Something horrible and shocking has happened in the land.31The prophets prophesy lies. The priests rule by their own authority. And my people love it this way. But what will you do in the end?’

1Der HERR sagt: »Geht doch durch die Straßen Jerusalems und macht eure Augen auf; seht euch auf allen Plätzen um! Wenn ihr dort nur einen Einzigen findet, der das Rechte tut und auf den man sich verlassen kann, dann werde ich die Schuld der ganzen Stadt vergeben.2Aber wenn in Jerusalem jemand bei meinem Namen schwört, dann ist es bestimmt ein Meineid!«3Doch dir, HERR, kommt es auf Treue und Zuverlässigkeit an! Du hast dieses Volk geschlagen, aber es hat sich nichts daraus gemacht. Du hast es fast vernichtet, aber es wollte nicht daraus lernen. Sie blieben bei ihrem Starrsinn und weigerten sich, zu dir umzukehren.4Ich hatte gedacht: Gewiss sind nur die einfachen Leute so; die handeln verkehrt, weil sie nicht wissen, was der HERR von ihnen erwartet und was in seinen Augen recht ist.5Ich muss die Gebildeten ansprechen, sie werden es bestimmt wissen. Aber gerade sie haben Gott den Gehorsam aufgekündigt und sich von ihm losgerissen, als wären seine Gebote nur eine lästige Fessel.6Der HERR sagt: »Darum wird dieses Volk von seinen Feinden vernichtet! Sie fallen über es her wie der Löwe aus dem Dickicht, sie packen es wie der Wolf aus der Steppe. Wie der Leopard lauern sie vor seinen Städten; jeder, der herauskommt, wird zerrissen. Denn zahllos sind die Vergehen dieses Volkes, es zeigt mir nur noch den Rücken.«
Vergebung ist nicht mehr möglich
7Der HERR sagt: »Warum sollte ich euch vergeben? Ihr habt mich verlassen und bei Göttern geschworen, die gar keine Götter sind. Ich habe euch satt gemacht, aber ihr habt mir die Treue gebrochen und eure Zeit im Hurenhaus zugebracht.*8Wie feiste, geile Hengste seid ihr geworden: Jeder wiehert nach der Frau des anderen.9Sollte ich das hingehen lassen«, sagt der HERR, »sollte ich an einem solchen Volk nicht Vergeltung üben?10Also hinauf in den Weinberg! Verwüstet ihn! – Aber vernichtet ihn nicht ganz! – Reißt die Ranken ab; mir gehören sie nicht!11Denn die Leute von Israel und von Juda haben sich völlig von mir abgewandt.« Das sagt der HERR.
Selbstsicherheit fordert das Gericht heraus
12Die Leute von Juda nehmen den HERRN nicht ernst. »Mit ihm braucht niemand zu rechnen«, sagen sie. »Krieg und Hungersnot wird es nicht geben; die ganze Katastrophe findet nicht statt.13Was die Propheten verkündet haben, wird sich als Wind erweisen. Was sie angedroht haben, soll sie selbst treffen; denn Gott hat gar nicht zu ihnen gesprochen.«14Aber der HERR, der Gott der ganzen Welt,* hat zu mir gesagt: »Weil die Leute von Juda so reden, sorge ich dafür, dass die Worte, die ich dir auftrage, zu einem Feuersturm werden, und dieses Volk mache ich zum Brennholz; der Feuersturm soll es fressen!15Sag zu ihnen: ›Ich führe von fern her ein Volk gegen euch heran. Ihr kennt seine Sprache nicht und versteht nicht, was diese Leute sagen. Niemand kann es besiegen. Es ist ein uraltes Volk von unerschöpflicher Kraft.16Aus den Köchern seiner Krieger kommen Tod und Verderben; sie alle sind im Kampf erprobt.17Dieses Volk wird alles fressen: eure Ernte und eure Vorräte, eure Söhne und Töchter, eure Schafe und Rinder, eure Weinstöcke und Feigenbäume. Es wird die befestigten Städte, auf die ihr vertraut, zerstören und ihre Bewohner mit dem Schwert erschlagen.‹«
Die Strafe entspricht dem Vergehen
18»Aber auch dann will ich mein Volk nicht völlig vernichten«, sagte der HERR zu mir.19»Und wenn sie dich fragen: ›Weshalb hat der HERR uns all das angetan?‹, so antworte ihnen: ›In eurem eigenen Land habt ihr den HERRN, euren Gott, verlassen und fremden Göttern gedient, deshalb dient nun auch fremden Menschen in einem Land, das nicht euch gehört.‹«
Ein unbelehrbares Volk
20Der HERR sagte zu mir: »Verkünde den Nachkommen Jakobs, dem Volk von Juda:21›Hört, was der HERR sagt, ihr Leute ohne Einsicht und Verstand, mit Augen, die nicht sehen, mit Ohren, die nicht hören!22Wollt ihr mich nicht endlich ernst nehmen? Wollt ihr nicht zittern und beben vor mir? Ich habe dem Meer eine Grenze gesetzt, die es nie überschreiten kann. Einen Sandwall habe ich darumgelegt und alles Toben und Schäumen hilft ihm nichts; es kommt nicht darüber hinaus.23Doch ihr wollt nicht begreifen, ihr sperrt euch gegen jede Einsicht. Ihr habt euch von mir abgewandt und seid davongelaufen.24Ihr dachtet nicht daran, zu sagen: Wir wollen den HERRN, unseren Gott, ehren, er schickt uns ja den Regen, im Herbst wie im Frühjahr, und sorgt dafür, dass das Korn auf den Feldern zu seiner Zeit reif wird.25Um diesen Segen habt ihr euch durch eure Vergehen gebracht; Dürre und Missernte sind die Folgen eurer Schuld!‹«
Skrupellose Jagd nach Bereicherung
26Der HERR sagt: »In meinem Volk gibt es skrupellose Leute. Wie Vogelfänger sich ducken und darauf lauern, dass ihnen Vögel in die Netze gehen, so haben sie Fallen gestellt, um Menschen zu fangen.27Wie der Käfig des Vogelfängers voll ist von gefangenen Vögeln, so sind ihre Häuser voll von unrecht erworbenem Gut. Auf diese Weise sind sie groß und reich geworden,28dick und fett sind sie. Ihre Rücksichtslosigkeit kennt keine Grenzen. Das Recht ist bei ihnen in schlechten Händen: Sie setzen sich nicht für die Waisen ein und verhelfen den Armen nicht zu dem, was ihnen zusteht.29Und all das sollte ich hingehen lassen? Muss ich an einem solchen Volk nicht Vergeltung üben?«
Die Schuld der Propheten und Priester
30Der HERR sagt: »Was in diesem Land geschieht, ist unglaublich und empörend:31Die Propheten reden Lug und Trug, die Priester suchen nur den eigenen Vorteil,* und mein Volk hat es gerne so. Was aber wollt ihr machen, wenn das Ende da ist?«
