Control what you say

1 My brothers and sisters, most of you shouldn’t become teachers. That’s because you know that those of us who teach will be held more accountable. 2 All of us get tripped up in many ways. Suppose someone is never wrong in what they say. Then they are perfect. They are able to keep their whole body under control. 3 We put a small piece of metal in the mouth of a horse to make it obey us. We can control the whole animal with it. 4 And how about ships? They are very big. They are driven along by strong winds. But they are steered by a very small rudder. It makes them go where the captain wants to go. 5 In the same way, the tongue is a small part of a person’s body. But it talks big. Think about how a small spark can set a big forest on fire. 6 The tongue is also a fire. The tongue is the most evil part of the body. It makes the whole body impure. It sets a person’s whole way of life on fire. And the tongue itself is set on fire by hell. 7 People have tamed all kinds of wild animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures. And they still tame them. 8 But no one can tame the tongue. It is an evil thing that never rests. It is full of deadly poison. 9 With our tongues we praise our Lord and Father. With our tongues we curse people. We do it even though people have been created to be like God. 10 Praise and cursing come out of the same mouth. My brothers and sisters, it shouldn’t be this way. 11 Can fresh water and salt water flow out of the same spring? 12 My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree produce olives? Can a grapevine produce figs? Of course not. And a saltwater spring can’t produce fresh water either.

Two kinds of wisdom

13 Is anyone among you wise and understanding? That person should show it by living a good life. A wise person isn’t proud when they do good deeds. 14 But suppose your hearts are jealous and bitter. Suppose you are concerned only about getting ahead. Then don’t boast about it. And don’t say no to the truth. 15 Wisdom like this doesn’t come down from heaven. It belongs to the earth. It doesn’t come from the Holy Spirit. It comes from the devil. 16 Are you jealous? Are you concerned only about getting ahead? Then your life will be a mess. You will be doing all kinds of evil things. 17 But the wisdom that comes from heaven is pure. That’s the most important thing about it. And that’s not all. It also loves peace. It thinks about others. It obeys. It is full of mercy and good fruit. It is fair. It doesn’t pretend to be what it is not. 18 Those who make peace plant it like a seed. They will harvest a crop of right living.

Die gefährliche Macht der Zunge

1 Meine Brüder, nicht zu viele von euch sollten Lehrer der Gemeinde werden wollen. Ihr wisst ja, dass wir Lehrer vor Gottes Gericht strenger beurteilt werden als die anderen. 2 Wir alle sind in vieler Hinsicht fehlerhafte Menschen. Wer nie ein verkehrtes Wort redet, ist ein vollkommener Mensch; er ist fähig, auch seinen ganzen Leib im Zaum zu halten. 3 Wir legen den Pferden das Zaumzeug ins Maul, damit sie uns gehorchen; so lenken wir das ganze Tier. 4 Oder denkt an ein Schiff: Es ist groß und wird von starken Winden getrieben; trotzdem wird es mit einem winzigen Ruder gesteuert, wohin der Steuermann es haben will. 5 Ebenso ist es mit der Zunge: Sie ist nur klein und bringt doch gewaltige Dinge fertig. Denkt daran, wie klein die Flamme sein kann, die einen großen Wald in Brand setzt! 6 Auch die Zunge ist ein Feuer. Sie ist eine Welt voller Unrecht und beschmutzt den ganzen Menschen. Sie setzt unser Leben von der Geburt bis zum Tod* in Brand mit einem Feuer, das aus der Hölle selbst kommt. 7 Der Mensch hat es fertiggebracht, alle Tiere zu bändigen: Raubtiere, Vögel, Schlangen und Fische. 8 Aber die Zunge hat noch niemand bändigen können, diesen ruhelosen Störenfried, voll von tödlichem Gift. 9 Mit der Zunge loben wir Gott, unseren Herrn und Vater – und mit ihr verfluchen wir unsere Mitmenschen, die nach Gottes Bild geschaffen sind. 10 Aus demselben Mund kommen Segen und Fluch. Meine Brüder und Schwestern,* das darf nicht sein! 11 Eine Quelle lässt doch nicht aus der gleichen Öffnung genießbares und ungenießbares Wasser fließen. 12 Meine Brüder und Schwestern, auf einem Feigenbaum wachsen doch keine Oliven, an einem Weinstock hängen keine Feigen, und eine salzige Quelle kann niemals Süßwasser hervorbringen!

Die Weisheit, die von Gott kommt

13 Will jemand unter euch als klug und weise gelten? Dann zeige er das in der ganzen Lebensführung, mit der Bescheidenheit, die den Weisen ansteht! 14 Wenn ihr dagegen bittere Eifersucht und Streit in euren Herzen hegt, dann rühmt euch nicht eurer Weisheit und verdreht damit die Wahrheit! 15 Diese Art von Weisheit kommt nicht von oben, sie ist irdisch, sinnlich und teuflisch. 16 Wo Eifersucht und Streit herrschen, gibt es Unordnung und jede Art von Gemeinheit. 17 Aber die Weisheit von oben ist zuerst einmal rein und klar; sodann ist sie friedliebend, freundlich, nachgiebig. Sie ist voller Erbarmen und bringt viele gute Taten hervor. Sie kennt weder Vorurteil noch Verstellung. 18 Die Saat der Gerechtigkeit, von Gott gesät, geht nur bei denen auf, die auf Frieden aus sind, und nur bei ihnen bringt sie Frucht.*
