1 I, James, am writing this letter. I serve God and the Lord Jesus Christ. I am sending this letter to you, the 12 tribes scattered among the nations. Greetings.

Facing all kinds of trouble

2 My brothers and sisters, you will face all kinds of trouble. When you do, think of it as pure joy. 3 Your faith will be tested. You know that when this happens it will produce in you the strength to continue. 4 And you must allow this strength to finish its work. Then you will be all you should be. You will have everything you need. 5 If any of you needs wisdom, you should ask God for it. He will give it to you. God gives freely to everyone and doesn’t find fault. 6 But when you ask, you must believe. You must not doubt. That’s because a person who doubts is like a wave of the sea. The wind blows and tosses them around. 7 They shouldn’t expect to receive anything from the Lord. 8 This kind of person can’t make up their mind. They can never decide what to do. 9 Here’s what believers who are in low positions in life should be proud of. They should be proud that God has given them a high position in the kingdom. 10 But rich people should take pride in their low positions. That’s because they will fade away like wild flowers. 11 The sun rises. Its burning heat dries up the plants. Their blossoms fall. Their beauty is destroyed. In the same way, rich people will fade away. They fade away even as they go about their business. 12 Blessed is the person who keeps on going when times are hard. After they have come through hard times, this person will receive a crown. The crown is life itself. The Lord has promised it to those who love him. 13 When a person is tempted, they shouldn’t say, ‘God is tempting me.’ God can’t be tempted by evil. And he doesn’t tempt anyone. 14 But each person is tempted by their own evil desires. These desires lead them on and drag them away. 15 When these desires are allowed to remain, they lead to sin. And when sin is allowed to remain and grow, it leads to death. 16 My dear brothers and sisters, don’t let anyone fool you. 17 Every good and perfect gift is from God. This kind of gift comes down from the Father who created the heavenly lights. These lights create shadows that move. But the Father does not change like these shadows. 18 God chose to give us new birth through the message of truth. He wanted us to be the first harvest of his new creation.

Listen to the word and do what it says

19 My dear brothers and sisters, pay attention to what I say. Everyone should be quick to listen. But they should be slow to speak. They should be slow to get angry. 20 Human anger doesn’t produce the holy life God wants. 21 So get rid of everything that is sinful. Get rid of the evil that is all around us. Don’t be too proud to accept the word that is planted in you. It can save you. 22 Don’t just listen to the word. You fool yourselves if you do that. You must do what it says. 23 Suppose someone listens to the word but doesn’t do what it says. Then they are like a person who looks at their face in a mirror. 24 After looking at themselves, they leave. And right away they forget what they look like. 25 But suppose someone takes a good look at the perfect law that gives freedom. And they keep looking at it. Suppose they don’t forget what they’ve heard, but they do what the law says. Then this person will be blessed in what they do. 26 Suppose people think their beliefs and how they live are both right. But they don’t control what they say. Then they are fooling themselves. Their beliefs and way of life are not worth anything at all. 27 Here are the beliefs and way of life that God our Father accepts as pure and without fault. When widows are in trouble, take care of them. Do the same for children who have no parents. And don’t let the world make you impure.

Glaube in der Erprobung

2 Meine Brüder und Schwestern,* nehmt es als Grund zur Freude, zur reinsten Freude, wenn ihr in vielfältiger Weise auf die Probe gestellt werdet. 3 Denn ihr wisst: Wenn euer Glaube erprobt wird, führt euch das zur Standhaftigkeit; 4 die Standhaftigkeit aber soll zum Tun des Rechten und Guten führen, damit ihr in jeder Hinsicht untadelig seid und euch zur Vollkommenheit nichts mehr fehlt. 5 Wenn es aber unter euch welche gibt, die nicht wissen, was sie in einem bestimmten Fall tun müssen, sollen sie Gott um Weisheit bitten,* und Gott wird sie ihnen geben. Denn er gibt sie allen gerne, ohne ihnen Vorwürfe zu machen. 6 Sie müssen Gott aber in festem Vertrauen bitten und dürfen nicht zweifeln. Wer zweifelt, gleicht den Meereswogen, die vom Wind gepeitscht und hin und her getrieben werden. 7 Solche Menschen können nicht erwarten, dass sie vom Herrn etwas empfangen; 8 denn sie sind in sich gespalten und unbeständig in allem, was sie unternehmen.

Die Armen sollen sich rühmen!

9 Wenn Brüder oder Schwestern* arm und verachtet sind, sollen sie sich damit rühmen, dass sie bei Gott hoch angesehen sind. 10 Wenn sie dagegen reich und mächtig sind, sollen sie sich bewusst sein, dass sie Gott damit keinen Eindruck machen können; denn wie eine Blume auf der Wiese werden sie vergehen. 11 Wenn die Sonne mit ihren sengenden Strahlen emporsteigt, verdorren die Blätter, und die Blüte fällt ab; ihre ganze Schönheit ist dahin. Genauso werden die Reichen zugrunde gehen, und mit all ihren Unternehmungen hat es ein Ende.

Woher die Versuchungen kommen

12 Freuen darf sich, wer auf die Probe gestellt wird und sie besteht; denn Gott wird ihm den Siegeskranz geben, das ewige Leben, das er allen versprochen hat, die ihn lieben. 13 Wenn ein Mensch in Versuchung gerät, soll er nicht sagen: »Gott hat mich in Versuchung geführt.« So wie Gott nicht zum Bösen verführt werden kann, so verführt er auch niemand dazu. 14 Es ist die eigene Begehrlichkeit, die den Menschen ködert und einfängt. 15 Wenn jemand ihr nachgibt, wird die Begehrlichkeit gleichsam schwanger und gebiert die Sünde. Und wenn die Sünde ausgewachsen ist, bringt sie den Tod hervor. 16 Meine lieben Brüder und Schwestern,* lasst euch nicht irreführen! 17 Lauter gute Gaben, nur vollkommene Gaben kommen von oben, von dem Schöpfer* der Gestirne. Bei ihm gibt es kein Zu- und Abnehmen des Lichtes und keine Verfinsterung. 18 Aus seinem freien Willen hat er uns durch das Wort der Wahrheit, durch die Gute Nachricht,* ein neues Leben geschenkt. So sind wir gleichsam die Erstgeborenen* seiner neuen Schöpfung.

Hören und Tun

19 Denkt daran, liebe Brüder und Schwestern: Jeder soll stets bereit sein zu hören, aber sich Zeit lassen, bevor er redet, und noch mehr, bevor er zornig wird. 20 Denn im Zorn tut niemand, was vor Gott recht ist. 21 Legt also alles Gemeine und Schlechte ab und nehmt bereitwillig das Wort an, das Gott euch ins Herz gepflanzt hat. Es hat die Macht, euch zu retten. 22 Es genügt aber nicht, dieses Wort nur anzuhören. Ihr müsst es in die Tat umsetzen, sonst betrügt ihr euch selbst! 23 Wer die Botschaft Gottes nur hört, aber nicht danach handelt, ist wie ein Mensch, der in einen Spiegel blickt: 24 Er sieht sich, wie er ist, und betrachtet sich kurz. Aber dann geht er weg – und schon hat er vergessen, wie er aussah. 25 Anders der Mensch, der tief und anhaltend in das vollkommene Gesetz Gottes blickt, das uns frei macht. Er hört nicht nur hin, um es gleich wieder zu vergessen, sondern handelt danach. Freuen darf sich, wer das wirklich tut.

Maßstäbe echter Frömmigkeit

26 Wenn jemand meint, Gott zu ehren, aber seine Zunge nicht im Zaum halten kann, ist seine ganze Gottesverehrung wertlos und er betrügt sich selbst. 27 Gott, der Vater, wird auf die rechte Art geehrt, wenn jemand den Waisen und Witwen in ihrer Not beisteht und sich nicht an dem ungerechten Treiben dieser Welt beteiligt.
