The Lord helps Israel

1 The LORD says, ‘People who live on the islands, come and stand quietly in front of me. Let the nations gain new strength in order to state their case. Let them come forward and speak. Let us go to court and find out who is right. 2 ‘Who has stirred up a king from the east? Who has helped him win his battles? I hand nations over to him. I bring kings under his control. He turns them into dust with his sword. With his bow he turns them into straw blowing in the wind. 3 He hunts them down. Then he moves on unharmed. He travels so fast that his feet don’t seem to touch the ground. 4 Who has made that happen? Who has carried it out? Who has created all the people who have ever lived? I, the LORD, have done it. I was with the first of them. And I will be with the last of them.’ 5 The people on the islands have seen that king coming. And it has made them afraid. People tremble with fear from one end of the earth to the other. They come and gather together. 6 They help one another. They say to one another, ‘Be strong!’ 7 One skilled worker makes a statue of a god. Another covers it with gold. The first worker says to the second, ‘You have done a good job.’ Another worker smooths out the metal with a hammer. Still another gives the statue its final shape. The one who hammers says to the one who shapes, ‘You have done a good job.’ Then they nail the statue down so it won’t fall over. 8 The LORD says, ‘People of Israel, you are my servants. Family of Jacob, I have chosen you. You are the children of my friend Abraham. 9 I gathered you from one end of the earth to the other. From the farthest places on earth I brought you together. I said, “You are my servants.” I have chosen you. I have not turned my back on you. 10 So do not be afraid. I am with you. Do not be terrified. I am your God. I will make you strong and help you. I will hold you safe in my hands. I always do what is right. 11 ‘All those who are angry with you will be put to shame. And they will be dishonoured. Those who oppose you will be destroyed. And they will vanish. 12 You might search for your enemies. But you will not find them. Those who go to war against you will completely disappear. 13 I am the LORD your God. I take hold of your right hand. I say to you, “Do not be afraid. I will help you.” 14 Family of Jacob, you are as weak as a worm. But do not be afraid. People of Israel, there are only a few of you. But do not be afraid. I myself will help you,’ announces the LORD. He is the one who sets his people free. He is the Holy One of Israel. 15 He says, ‘I will make you into a threshing sled. It will be new and sharp. It will have many teeth. You will grind the mountains down and crush them. You will turn the hills into nothing but straw. 16 You will toss them in the air. A strong wind will catch them and blow them away. You will be glad because I will make that happen. You will praise me. I am the Holy One of Israel. 17 ‘Those who are poor and needy search for water. But there isn’t any. Their tongues are dry because they are thirsty. But I will help them. I am the LORD. I will not desert them. I am Israel’s God. 18 I will make streams flow on the bare hilltops. I will make springs come up in the valleys. I will turn the desert into pools of water. I will turn the dry and cracked ground into flowing springs. 19 I will make trees grow in the desert. I will plant cedar and acacia trees there. I will plant myrtle and olive trees there. I will make juniper trees grow in the dry and empty desert. I will plant fir and cypress trees there. 20 Then people will see and know that my powerful hand has done it. They will consider and understand that I have created it. I am the Holy One of Israel.’ 21 The LORD says to the nations and their gods, ‘State your case.’ Jacob’s King says to them, ‘Prove your case to me. 22 Tell us, you false gods, what is going to happen. Tell us what happened in the past. Then we can check it out and see if it is really true. Or announce to us the things that will take place. 23 Tell us what will happen in the days ahead. Then we will know that you are gods. Do something. It does not matter whether it is good or bad. Then we will be terrified and filled with fear. 24 But you false gods are less than nothing. Your actions are completely worthless. I hate it when people worship you. 25 ‘I have stirred up a king who will come from the north. He lives in the east. He will bring honour to me. He walks all over rulers as if they were mud. He steps on them just as a potter treads on clay. 26 Which one of you false gods said those things would happen before they did? Who told us about them so we could know them? Who told us in advance? Who told us so we could say, “You are right”? None of you false gods told us about them. None of you told us in advance. In fact, no one heard you say anything at all. 27 I was the first to tell Zion. I said, “Look! The people of Israel are coming back!” I sent a messenger to Jerusalem with the good news. 28 I look, but there is no one among the gods that can give me advice. None of them can answer when I ask them the simplest question. 29 So they are not really gods at all. What they do does not amount to anything. They are as useless as wind.

Der Gott Israels fordert die Götter heraus

1 Der HERR sagt: »Hört mir zu, lasst mich reden, ihr Völker, bis hin zu den Enden der Erde! Nehmt eure ganze Kraft zusammen! Die Götter sollen vortreten und mir antworten. Ich habe einen Rechtsstreit mit ihnen; wir wollen ihn vor euch austragen. 2 Wer war es, der den Mann aus dem Osten* auftreten ließ, ihn, der überall siegt, wo er hinkommt? Er unterwirft sich die Völker und entthront ihre Könige, mit seinen Heeren treibt er sie vor sich her wie der Wind den Staub oder die Spreu. 3 Er jagt ihnen nach, seine Füße scheinen den Boden kaum zu berühren. Niemand kann ihm etwas anhaben. 4 Wer war es, der dies in Gang gesetzt hat? Der, der von Anfang an die Menschen ins Dasein ruft und die Geschicke der Völker lenkt! Ich war es, der HERR; ich bin der Erste, und bis zuletzt bleibe ich Herr über alles, was geschieht!«*

Die Völker suchen Schutz

5 Die Bewohner der fernsten Länder sahen, was da geschah, und zitterten vor Angst; sie machten sich auf und kamen zusammen. 6 Sie helfen einander und sprechen sich gegenseitig Mut zu. 7 Sie machen ihr Götterbild fertig: Der Gießer glättet es mit dem Hammer, dann sagt er zum Goldschmied: »Nur zu!« Der Goldschmied hämmert den Belag auf und sagt: »Das hält!« Und zuletzt befestigt einer das Standbild mit Nägeln auf dem Podest, damit es nicht wackelt.

Gott steht zu seinem erwählten Volk

8 Der HERR sagt: »Israel, du Volk Jakobs, das ich erwählt habe, damit es mir dient, du Nachkommenschaft meines Freundes Abraham! 9 Du weißt: Aus dem fernsten Winkel der Erde habe ich dich gerufen und herbeigeholt, ich habe zu dir gesagt: ›Du stehst in meinem Dienst!‹ Ich habe dich erwählt und ich habe dich auch jetzt nicht verstoßen. 10 Fürchte dich nicht, ich stehe dir bei! Hab keine Angst, ich bin dein Gott! Ich mache dich stark, ich helfe dir, ich schütze dich mit meiner siegreichen Hand! 11 Alle, die gegen dich wüten, werden in Schimpf und Schande dastehen; alle, die dir dein Lebensrecht streitig machen, werden zugrunde gehen. 12 Du wirst dich nach ihnen umsehen, aber sie nicht mehr finden; alle deine Feinde verschwinden und werden zu nichts. 13 Denn ich bin der HERR, dein Gott, ich fasse dich bei der Hand und sage zu dir: Fürchte dich nicht! Ich selbst, ich helfe dir! 14 Fürchte dich nicht, Israel, du Nachkommenschaft Jakobs! Auch wenn du so schwach und hilflos bist wie ein Wurm, den man zertritt – ich, der HERR, helfe dir; darauf gebe ich dir mein Wort. Ich, der heilige Gott Israels, bin dein Befreier. 15 Ich mache dich zu einem Dreschschlitten mit neuen, scharfen Zähnen. Berge und Hügel wirst du dreschen und zu Staub zermahlen; 16 mit der Worfschaufel wirfst du sie in die Luft, sodass der Sturm sie wie Spreu davonträgt. Dann wirst du jubeln über das, was ich getan habe; du wirst den heiligen Gott Israels preisen, der dir geholfen hat.«

Gott führt sein Volk durch die Wüste

17 Der HERR sagt: »Mein Volk ist am Verdursten, sie suchen nach Wasser und finden keins; ihre Zunge klebt schon am Gaumen. Aber ich, der HERR, höre ihren Hilferuf; ich, der Gott Israels, lasse sie nicht im Stich! 18 Auf den steinigen Höhen lasse ich Wasser hervorbrechen und im Wüstensand Quellen entspringen. In der Steppe sollen sich Teiche bilden, aus dem ausgedörrten Boden soll Wasser hervorsprudeln. 19 Mitten in der Wüste lasse ich Schatten spendende Bäume aufwachsen: Zedern, Akazien, Myrten und Ölbäume, Wacholder, Pinien und Zypressen. 20 Wenn sie das sehen, werden sie begreifen, dass ich, der HERR, eingegriffen habe, und sie werden erkennen: Der heilige Gott Israels hat dies alles geschaffen.«

Die Götter sollen ihre Macht beweisen

21 Der HERR, der König Israels, sagt zu den Göttern der Völker: »Stellt euch auf zum Prozess! Bringt eure Beweise vor! 22 Lasst uns hören, was ihr vollbracht habt! Erzählt es uns, wir lassen uns gerne belehren. Oder sagt uns voraus, was ihr in Zukunft vollbringen wollt! Dann werden wir euch glauben, wenn es eintrifft. 23 Sagt doch irgendetwas voraus, etwas Gutes oder etwas Schlimmes, dann werden wir alle erkennen, dass ihr Götter seid, und werden Respekt vor euch haben! 24 Aber ihr seid ja nichts und könnt auch nichts. Wer euch liebt, ist mir verhasst. 25 Ich erweckte den Mann aus dem Osten* und er machte sich auf; ich rief ihn beim Namen und er kam. Er tritt die Mächtigen in den Staub, er verfährt mit ihnen wie der Töpfer, der den Ton mit den Füßen stampft. 26 Wer hat das im Voraus angekündigt, sodass wir sagen müssten: ›Er hat recht gehabt‹? Keiner von euch hat es angekündigt, keiner hat es vorausgesagt, kein Wörtchen hat man von euch gehört. 27 Ich allein, ich habe das den Leuten von Jerusalem angekündigt und der Zionsstadt den Freudenboten mit dieser Nachricht geschickt. 28 Ich sehe mich um, da sind die Götter alle verschwunden, und aus dem Kreis der Völker nimmt sie keiner in Schutz. Niemand antwortet auf meine Fragen. 29 Sie sind alle nichts,* die Götter, sie haben nichts vorzuweisen. Und ihre Bilder haben schon gar nichts zu bedeuten.«
