Isaac is born

1 The LORD was gracious to Sarah, just as he had said he would be. The LORD did for Sarah what he had promised to do. 2 Sarah became pregnant. She had a son by Abraham when he was old. The child was born at the exact time God had promised. 3 Abraham gave the name Isaac to the son Sarah had by him. 4 When his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him. He did it exactly as God had commanded him. 5 Abraham was 100 years old when his son Isaac was born to him. 6 Sarah said, ‘God has given laughter to me. Everyone who hears about this will laugh with me.’ 7 She also said, ‘Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would breast-feed children? But I’ve had a son by him when he is old.’

Abraham sends Hagar and Ishmael away

8 Isaac grew. The time came for his mother to stop breast-feeding him. On that day Abraham prepared a big celebration. 9 But Sarah saw Ishmael making fun of Isaac. Ishmael was the son Hagar had by Abraham. Hagar was Sarah’s Egyptian slave. 10 Sarah said to Abraham, ‘Get rid of that slave woman! Get rid of her son! That woman’s son will never have a share of the family’s property. All of it belongs to my son Isaac.’ 11 What Sarah said upset Abraham very much. After all, Ishmael was his son. 12 But God said to Abraham, ‘Do not be so upset about the boy and your slave Hagar. Listen to what Sarah tells you, because your family line will continue through Isaac. 13 I will also make the son of your slave into a nation. I will do it because he is your child.’ 14 Early the next morning Abraham got some food and a bottle of water. The bottle was made out of animal skin. He gave the food and water to Hagar, placing them on her shoulders. Then he sent her away with the boy. She went on her way and wandered in the Desert of Beersheba. 15 When the water in the bottle was gone, she put the boy under a bush. 16 Then she sat down about as far away as a person can shoot an arrow. She thought, ‘I can’t stand to watch the boy die.’ As she sat there, she began to sob. 17 God heard the boy crying. Then the angel of God called out to Hagar from heaven. He said to her, ‘What is the matter, Hagar? Do not be afraid. God has heard the boy crying as he lies there. 18 Lift up the boy and take him by the hand. I will make him into a great nation.’ 19 Then God opened Hagar’s eyes, and she saw a well of water. So she went and filled the bottle with water and gave the boy a drink. 20 God was with the boy as he grew up. He lived in the desert and learned to shoot a bow and arrow. 21 While he was living in the Desert of Paran, his mother got a wife for him from Egypt.

The agreement at Beersheba

22 At that time Abimelek and his army commander, Phicol, spoke to Abraham. They said to Abraham, ‘God is with you in everything you do. 23 Now make a promise to me here while God is watching. Give me your word that you will treat me fairly. Promise that you will treat my children and their children the same way. I’ve been kind to you. Now you be kind to me and the country where you are living as an outsider.’ 24 Abraham said, ‘I give you my word that I’ll do it.’ 25 Then Abraham complained to Abimelek that his servants had taken over a well of water. 26 But Abimelek said, ‘I don’t know who has done this. You didn’t tell me. And today is the first time I heard about it.’ 27 So Abraham gave Abimelek sheep and cattle. The two men came to an agreement. 28 Then Abraham picked out seven female lambs from his flock. 29 Abimelek asked Abraham, ‘What’s the meaning of these seven female lambs? Why have you picked them out and set them apart?’ 30 Abraham replied, ‘Accept the seven lambs from me. They will be a witness that I dug this well.’ 31 So that place was named Beersheba. That’s because there the two men came to an agreement. 32 After the agreement had been made at Beersheba, Abimelek went back to the land of the Philistines. His army commander, Phicol, went with him. 33 Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba. There he called on the name of the LORD, the God who lives for ever. 34 Abraham stayed in the land of the Philistines for a long time.

Sara bekommt einen Sohn

1 Der HERR dachte an Sara und tat an ihr, was er angekündigt hatte. 2 Sie wurde schwanger und gebar Abraham noch in seinem Alter einen Sohn. Es war genau zu der Zeit, die Gott angegeben hatte. 3 Abraham nannte den Sohn, den Sara ihm geboren hatte, Isaak. 4 Als Isaak acht Tage alt war, beschnitt er ihn, genau wie Gott es angeordnet hatte. 5 Abraham war bei Isaaks Geburt 100 Jahre alt. 6 Sara aber sagte: »Gott hat dafür gesorgt, dass ich lachen kann. Alle, die davon hören, werden mit mir lachen.* 7 Noch nie hat Abraham es erlebt, dass ihm einer die Nachricht brachte: ›Deine Frau Sara stillt ein Kind.‹ Aber jetzt in seinem Alter habe ich ihm noch einen Sohn geboren!« 8 Isaak wuchs und gedieh. Als er von der Mutterbrust entwöhnt wurde, feierte Abraham mit seinen Leuten ein großes Fest.

Hagar und Ismaël werden verstoßen und gerettet

9 Eines Tages sah Sara den Sohn der Ägypterin Hagar spielen, das Kind, das diese Abraham geboren hatte. 10 Da sagte sie zu ihrem Mann: »Jag diese Sklavin und ihren Sohn fort! Der Sohn der Sklavin darf nicht mit meinem Sohn Isaak zusammen erben!« 11 Abraham missfiel das sehr, denn auch Ismaël war ja sein Sohn. 12 Aber Gott sagte zu Abraham: »Gräme dich nicht wegen des Jungen und deiner Sklavin! Tu, was Sara von dir verlangt; denn die Nachkommen Isaaks sollen als deine rechtmäßigen Nachkommen gelten. 13 Aber auch den Sohn der Sklavin werde ich zu einem Volk machen, weil er von dir abstammt.« 14 Am nächsten Morgen nahm Abraham Brot und einen Schlauch mit Wasser, legte beides Hagar auf die Schulter, übergab ihr das Kind und schickte sie fort. Hagar ging weg und irrte ziellos in der Wüste bei Beerscheba umher. 15 Als das Wasser im Schlauch aufgebraucht war, warf sie das Kind unter einen Strauch 16 und setzte sich etwa einen Bogenschuss davon entfernt auf die Erde. Denn sie sagte: »Ich kann nicht mit ansehen, wie der Junge stirbt!« So saß sie in einiger Entfernung und weinte laut. 17 Aber Gott hörte das Kind schreien. Da rief der Engel Gottes vom Himmel aus Hagar zu: »Warum bist du verzweifelt, Hagar? Hab keine Angst, Gott hat das Schreien des Kindes gehört! 18 Steh auf und nimm den Jungen bei der Hand; denn ich werde seine Nachkommen zu einem großen Volk machen.« 19 Gott öffnete Hagar die Augen, da sah sie einen Brunnen. Sie ging hin, füllte den Schlauch mit Wasser und gab dem Kind zu trinken. 20 Auch weiterhin half Gott dem Jungen. Er wuchs heran und wurde ein Bogenschütze. 21 Er lebte in der Wüste Paran und seine Mutter gab ihm eine Ägypterin zur Frau.

Ein Vertrag zwischen Abraham und Abimelech

22 Damals kam Abimelech mit seinem Heerführer Pichol zu Abraham und sagte zu ihm: »Ich sehe: Gott steht dir bei und lässt dir alles gelingen, was du tust. 23 Darum schwöre mir jetzt bei Gott, dass du an mir und meinem Sohn und allen meinen Nachkommen nicht treulos handeln wirst. Ich habe dir nur Gutes erwiesen; handle du nun ebenso an mir und an dem Land, in dem du als Fremder lebst!« 24 »Das schwöre ich dir«, sagte Abraham. 25 Er beklagte sich aber bei Abimelech darüber, dass dessen Knechte ihm einen Brunnen weggenommen hatten. 26 »Ich weiß nicht, wer das war«, sagte Abimelech. »Du hast mir bisher nichts davon gesagt. Ich höre heute zum ersten Mal davon!« 27 Abraham gab Abimelech Schafe, Ziegen und Rinder, und sie schlossen einen Vertrag. 28 Dann sonderte Abraham noch sieben Lämmer aus seiner Herde aus. 29 »Was sollen diese Lämmer?«, fragte Abimelech. 30 Abraham erwiderte: »Die musst du von mir annehmen! Damit bezeugst du, dass ich den Brunnen gegraben habe und er mir gehört.« 31 Der Ort erhielt den Namen Beerscheba,* weil Abraham und Abimelech hier ihren Vertrag mit einem Schwur bekräftigt hatten. 32 Nachdem sie in Beerscheba den Vertrag geschlossen hatten, kehrten Abimelech und sein Heerführer Pichol in das Land der Philister zurück. 33 Abraham aber pflanzte in Beerscheba einen Tamariskenbaum und rief im Gebet den Namen des HERRN, des ewigen Gottes, an. 34 Lange Zeit lebte Abraham als Fremder im Land der Philister.
