Setting apart the eldest sons

1 The LORD said to Moses, 2 ‘Set apart for me the first boy born in every family. The eldest son of every Israelite mother belongs to me. Every male animal born first to its mother also belongs to me.’ 3 Then Moses said to the people, ‘Remember this day. It’s the day you came out of Egypt. That’s the land where you were slaves. The LORD used his mighty hand to bring you out of Egypt. Don’t eat anything with yeast in it. 4 You are leaving today. It’s the month of Aviv. 5 The LORD will bring you into the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Hivites and Jebusites. He promised your people of long ago that he would give that land to you. It’s a land that has plenty of milk and honey. When you get there, celebrate this holy day in this month. 6 For seven days eat bread made without yeast. On the seventh day hold a feast to honour the LORD. 7 Eat bread made without yeast during those seven days. Nothing with yeast in it should be found among you. No yeast should be seen anywhere inside your borders. 8 On that day talk to your child. Say, “I’m doing this because of what the LORD did for me when I came out of Egypt.” 9 When you celebrate this holy day, it will be like a mark on your hand. It will be like a reminder on your forehead. This law of the LORD must be on your lips. The LORD used his mighty hand to bring you out of Egypt. 10 Obey this law at the appointed time year after year. 11 ‘The LORD will bring you into the land of Canaan. He will give it to you, just as he promised he would. He gave his word to you and your people of long ago. 12 After you arrive in the land, give to the LORD the eldest son of every mother. Every male animal born first to its mother among your livestock belongs to the LORD. 13 By sacrificing a lamb, buy back every male donkey born first to its mother. But if you don’t buy the donkey back, break its neck. Buy back every eldest son. 14 ‘In days to come, your child will ask you, “What does this mean?” Say to them, “The LORD used his mighty hand to bring us out of Egypt. That’s the land where we were slaves. 15 Pharaoh was stubborn. He refused to let us go. So the LORD killed every eldest son in Egypt. He also killed all those born first among the people and animals. That’s why I sacrifice to the LORD every male animal born first. And that’s why I buy back each of my eldest sons for the LORD.” 16 This holy day will be like a mark on your hand. It will be like a sign on your forehead. It will remind you that the LORD used his mighty hand to bring us out of Egypt.’

Israel goes through the Red Sea

17 Pharaoh let the people go. The shortest road from Goshen to Canaan went through the Philistine country. But God didn’t lead them that way. God said, ‘If they have to go into battle, they might change their minds. They might return to Egypt.’ 18 So God led the people towards the Red Sea by taking them on a road through the desert. The Israelites were ready for battle when they went up out of Egypt. 19 Moses took the bones of Joseph along with him. Joseph had made the Israelites give their word to do this. He had said, ‘God will surely come to help you. When he does, you must carry my bones up from this place with you.’ 20 The people left Sukkoth. They camped at Etham on the edge of the desert. 21 By day the LORD went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud. It guided them on their way. At night he led them with a pillar of fire. It gave them light. So they could travel by day or at night. 22 The pillar of cloud didn’t leave its place in front of the people during the day. And the pillar of fire didn’t leave its place at night.

Die Erstgeburten gehören Gott

1 Der HERR sagte zu Mose: 2 »Weihe mir alle Erstgeburten! Jedes männliche Kind bei den Israeliten, das von einer Frau als erstes geboren wird, und jedes männliche Tier, das von einem Muttertier als erstes geboren wird, gehört mir.«*

Das Fest der Ungesäuerten Brote

3 Mose sagte zum Volk: »Feiert jedes Jahr den Tag, an dem ihr aus Ägypten gezogen seid, und erinnert euch daran, wie der HERR euch mit starker Hand aus dem Land herausgeführt hat, in dem ihr Sklaven gewesen seid. Esst an diesem Tag kein Brot, das mit Sauerteig gebacken ist! 4 Ihr zieht jetzt im Frühlingsmonat* aus Ägypten fort. 5 Wenn der HERR euch in das Land bringt, das er euren Vorfahren mit einem Eid zugesagt hat – das Land der Kanaaniter, Hetiter, Amoriter, Hiwiter und Jebusiter, ein Land, das von Milch und Honig überfließt –, dann sollt ihr jedes Jahr in diesem Monat dieses Fest begehen. 6 Sieben Tage lang dürft ihr nur solches Brot essen, das ohne Sauerteig zubereitet ist, 7 und am siebten Tag feiert ihr als abschließenden Höhepunkt ein Fest für den HERRN. Im ganzen Land darf es in dieser Zeit keinerlei Sauerteig geben. 8 Bei dieser Gelegenheit sollt ihr euren Söhnen erklären: ›Wir halten diesen Brauch zur Erinnerung an das, was der HERR für uns getan hat, als er uns aus Ägypten herausführte.‹ 9 Dieser Brauch hat für euch dieselbe Bedeutung wie die Zeichen am Arm und auf der Stirn. So wie diese Zeichen erinnert er euch daran, das Gesetz des HERRN immer wieder zu lesen und zu lernen.* Der HERR hat euch mit starker Hand aus Ägypten herausgeführt. 10 Darum sollt ihr jährlich zu dieser Zeit diese Vorschrift befolgen.«

Bestimmungen für die Erstgeburten

11 Weiter sagte Mose: »Wenn der HERR euch nun in das Land der Kanaaniter bringt und es euch gibt, wie er das euren Vorfahren und euch selbst mit einem Eid versprochen hat, 12 dann sollt ihr jede Erstgeburt dem HERRN als Eigentum übergeben. Jedes männliche Tier, das als erstes von einem Muttertier geboren wird, gehört dem HERRN und muss ihm als Opfer dargebracht werden. 13 Nur bei Eseln sollt ihr dem HERRN als Ersatz ein Schaf oder eine Ziege opfern. Wenn ihr das nicht tun wollt, müsst ihr dem Eselsfohlen das Genick brechen. Auch für die menschliche Erstgeburt, für den Jungen, den eine Frau als erstes Kind zur Welt bringt, sollt ihr dem HERRN einen Ersatz geben. 14 Wenn eure Söhne euch künftig fragen werden, warum ihr diesen Brauch befolgt, dann sagt ihnen: ›Dieser Brauch geht zurück auf die Zeit, als der HERR uns mit starker Hand aus Ägypten, wo wir Sklaven waren, herausgeführt hat. 15 Damals weigerte sich der Pharao hartnäckig, uns ziehen zu lassen, und deshalb tötete der HERR alle Erstgeborenen in Ägypten, unter den Menschen wie unter dem Vieh. Deshalb opfern wir dem HERRN jede männliche Erstgeburt; unsere erstgeborenen Söhne aber kaufen wir durch ein Ersatzopfer frei.‹ 16 Dieser Brauch hat für euch dieselbe Bedeutung wie die Zeichen am Arm und auf der Stirn; denn mit starker Hand hat der HERR uns aus Ägypten herausgeführt.«

Gott begleitet sein Volk

17 Als der Pharao das Volk endlich ziehen ließ, führte Gott sie nicht am Mittelmeer entlang und durch das Land der Philister, obwohl das der kürzeste Weg gewesen wäre. Gott dachte: »Wenn das Volk dort auf Widerstand stößt und kämpfen muss, ändert es seine Meinung und kehrt wieder nach Ägypten zurück.« 18 Darum ließ er das Volk einen Umweg machen und führte es durch die Wüste den Weg zum Schilfmeer. Geordnet wie eine Armee zogen die Israeliten aus Ägypten. 19 Mose nahm die Gebeine Josefs mit, wie dieser es vor seinem Tod ausdrücklich erbeten hatte. Damals hatte Josef zu seinen Brüdern gesagt: »Gott wird euch nicht vergessen. Dann müsst ihr meine Gebeine von hier mitnehmen.« 20 Von Sukkot zogen die Israeliten weiter nach Etam, wo die Wüste beginnt. Dort schlugen sie ihr Lager auf. 21 Während der Wanderung ging der HERR tagsüber in einer Wolkensäule vor ihnen her, um ihnen den Weg zu zeigen, und nachts in einer Feuersäule, um ihnen zu leuchten. So konnten sie Tag und Nacht unterwegs sein. 22 Jeden Tag war die Wolkensäule an der Spitze des Zuges und jede Nacht die Feuersäule.
