Sheba urges Israel not to follow David

1 An evil man who always stirred up trouble happened to be in Gilgal. His name was Sheba, the son of Bikri. Sheba was from the tribe of Benjamin. He blew his trumpet. Then he shouted, ‘We don’t have any share in David’s kingdom! Jesse’s son is not our king! Men of Israel, every one of you go back home!’ 2 So all the men of Israel deserted David. They followed Sheba, the son of Bikri. But the men of Judah stayed with their king. They remained with him from the River Jordan all the way to Jerusalem. 3 David returned to his palace in Jerusalem. He had left ten concubines there to take care of the palace. He put them in a house and kept them under guard. He gave them what they needed. But he didn’t sleep with them. They were kept under guard until the day they died. They lived as if they were widows. 4 The king said to Amasa, ‘Send for the men of Judah. Tell them to come to me within three days. And be here yourself.’ 5 So Amasa went to get the men of Judah. But he took longer than the time the king had set for him. 6 David said to Abishai, ‘Sheba, the son of Bikri, will do more harm to us than Absalom ever did. Take my men and go after him. If you don’t, he’ll find cities that have high walls around them. He’ll go into one of them and escape from us.’ 7 So Joab’s men marched out with the Kerethites and Pelethites. They went out with all the mighty soldiers. All of them were under Abishai’s command. They marched out from Jerusalem and went after Sheba, the son of Bikri. 8 They arrived at the great rock in Gibeon. Amasa went there to welcome them. Joab was wearing his military clothes. Over them at his waist he had strapped on a belt that held a dagger. As he stepped forward, he secretly took the dagger out. 9 Joab said to Amasa, ‘How are you, my friend?’ Then Joab reached out his right hand. He took hold of Amasa’s beard to kiss him. 10 Amasa didn’t notice the dagger in Joab’s left hand. Joab stuck it into his stomach. His insides spilled out on the ground. Joab didn’t have to stab him again. Amasa was already dead. Then Joab and his brother Abishai went after Sheba, the son of Bikri. 11 One of Joab’s men stood beside Amasa’s body. He said to the other men, ‘Are you pleased with Joab? Are you on David’s side? Then follow Joab!’ 12 Amasa’s body lay covered with his blood in the middle of the road. The man saw that all the troops stopped there. He realised that everyone was stopping to look at Amasa’s body. So he dragged it from the road into a field. Then he threw some clothes on top of it. 13 After that happened, everyone continued on with Joab. They went after Sheba, the son of Bikri. 14 Sheba passed through all the territory of the tribes of Israel. He arrived at the city of Abel Beth Maakah. He had gone through the entire area of the Bikrites. They had gathered together and followed him. 15 Joab and all his troops came to Abel Beth Maakah. They surrounded it because Sheba was there. They built a ramp up to the city. It stood against the outer wall. They pounded the wall with huge logs to bring it down. 16 While that was going on, a wise woman called out from the city. She shouted, ‘Listen! Listen! Tell Joab to come here. I want to speak to him.’ 17 So Joab went towards her. She asked, ‘Are you Joab?’ ‘I am’, he answered. She said, ‘Listen to what I have to say.’ ‘I’m listening,’ he said. 18 She continued, ‘Long ago people used to say, “Get your answer at Abel.” And that would settle the matter. 19 We are the most peaceful and faithful people in Israel. You are trying to destroy a city that is like a mother in Israel. Why do you want to swallow up what belongs to the LORD?’ 20 ‘I would never do anything like that!’ Joab said. ‘I would never swallow up or destroy what belongs to the LORD! 21 That isn’t what I have in mind at all. There’s a man named Sheba, the son of Bikri, in your city. He’s from the hill country of Ephraim. He’s trying to kill King David. Hand that man over to me. Then I’ll pull my men back from your city.’ The woman said to Joab, ‘We’ll throw his head down to you from the wall.’ 22 Then the woman gave her wise advice to all the people in the city. They cut off the head of Sheba, the son of Bikri. They threw it down to Joab. So he blew his trumpet. Then his men pulled back from the city. Each of them returned to his home. And Joab went back to the king in Jerusalem.

23 Joab was commander over Israel’s entire army. Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada, was commander over the Kerethites and Pelethites. 24 Adoniram was in charge of those who were forced to work hard. Jehoshaphat, the son of Ahilud, kept the records. 25 Sheva was the secretary. Zadok and Abiathar were priests. 26 Ira, the Jairite, was David’s priest.

1 Dort in Gilgal war auch ein niederträchtiger Mann aus dem Stamm Benjamin, Scheba, der Sohn von Bichri. Er blies das Widderhorn und rief: »Was geht uns alle dieser David an? Seit wann gehört der Isai-Sohn zu uns? Ihr Männer Israels, auf und nach Hause!« 2 Da ließen die Männer von Israel David im Stich und zogen mit Scheba, dem Sohn von Bichri, davon. Nur die Männer von Juda blieben ihrem König treu und geleiteten ihn vom Jordan bis nach Jerusalem. 3 Als David nach Jerusalem in seinen Königspalast kam, befahl er als Erstes, die zehn Nebenfrauen, die er als Hüterinnen des Palastes zurückgelassen hatte, in ein verschlossenes Haus zu bringen. Er sorgte für ihren Lebensunterhalt, hatte jedoch keinen Verkehr mehr mit ihnen. Sie lebten bis zu ihrem Tod völlig abgeschlossen, als Witwen auf Lebenszeit. 4 Dann sagte der König zu Amasa: »Biete alle Männer von Juda auf! Übermorgen bist du mit ihnen hier!« 5 Amasa ging, um die Männer von Juda zusammenzurufen, war jedoch zur gesetzten Frist nicht zurück. 6 Da sagte der König zu Abischai: »Scheba wird uns noch gefährlicher als Abschalom! Nimm meine Leute und jag ihm nach, bevor er befestigte Städte in seine Hand bringt und wir das Nachsehen haben.«* 7 Die Kriegsleute Joabs zogen also unter Abischais Führung von Jerusalem aus los, um Scheba nachzujagen, dazu auch Davids Leibgarde und die »Dreißig Helden«. 8 Als sie den großen Felsen bei Gibeon erreichten, war Amasa kurz zuvor dort eingetroffen. Joab trug sein übliches Gewand und darüber einen breiten Gürtel, unter dem ein Dolch verborgen war. Er war durch den Gürtel waagrecht an der Seite gehalten, und wenn Joab sich leicht vorbeugte, glitt er unbemerkt aus seiner Scheide. 9 Joab begrüßte Amasa: »Wie geht es dir, mein Freund?« Dabei fasste er mit der rechten Hand Amasa beim Bart, als wollte er ihn küssen. 10 Amasa bemerkte nicht, dass Joab den Dolch in der anderen Hand hielt. Joab stieß ihn damit in den Bauch, dass die Eingeweide auf die Erde quollen. Es brauchte keinen zweiten Stoß, Amasa war auf der Stelle tot. Joab und sein Bruder Abischai jagten weiter hinter Scheba her. 11 Einer von Joabs Männern stellte sich neben Amasas Leichnam und rief: »Joab nach, wer’s mit Joab hält und für David ist.« 12 Er merkte aber, dass alle Kriegsleute stehen blieben, weil Amasa blutüberströmt mitten auf der Straße lag. So schaffte er Amasas Leiche von der Straße weg ins Feld und warf einen Mantel darüber, damit nicht jeder, der vorbeikam, bei ihr stehen blieb. 13 Als die Leiche aus dem Weg geschafft war, folgten alle Joab und nahmen die Verfolgung Schebas auf. 14 Joab zog durch alle Stämme Israels bis nach Abel-Bet-Maacha. Alle wurden seine Verbündeten,* sammelten sich und folgten ihm. 15 Als Joab mit seinem Heer die Stadt erreicht hatte, schlossen sie Scheba darin ein und schütteten eine Angriffsrampe auf. Als die Rampe die Höhe der Vormauer erreicht hatte, drang das Heer Joabs bis zur Hauptmauer vor und versuchte, sie zum Einsturz zu bringen. 16 Nun lebte in der Stadt eine weise Frau. Die rief den Belagerern von der Mauer aus zu: »Leute, hört her, hört her! Sagt Joab, er soll kommen; ich muss mit ihm reden.« 17 Als Joab kam, fragte sie: »Bist du Joab?« »Ja«, sagte er und sie fuhr fort: »Ich bitte dich, hör mich an!« »Ich höre«, erwiderte Joab. 18 Sie begann: »Seit alter Zeit sagen die Leute: ›Holt euch doch Rat in Abel, dann kommt alles in Ordnung!‹ 19 Unsere Stadt gehört zu den friedlichsten und treuesten in Israel. Sie trägt den Ehrentitel ›Mutter in Israel‹. Und die willst du zerstören? Wie kannst du dich an einem Stück Land vergreifen, das dem HERRN gehört?« 20 »Nein, nein!«, erwiderte Joab. »Ich will mich doch nicht daran vergreifen! Ich denke nicht daran, sie zu zerstören! Aber ihr habt einen Mann aus dem Bergland Efraïm bei euch, Scheba, den Sohn von Bichri, der hat sich gegen König David erhoben. Nur auf den habe ich es abgesehen. Gebt ihn heraus und ich ziehe von der Stadt ab!« »Wir werden dir seinen Kopf über die Mauer werfen«, sagte die Frau. 22 Mit ihrer Weisheit überzeugte sie die Leute in der Stadt. Sie schlugen Scheba den Kopf ab und warfen ihn zu Joab über die Mauer. Da ließ Joab das Widderhorn blasen und die Belagerung abbrechen. Die Männer von Juda kehrten nach Hause zurück und Joab begab sich zum König nach Jerusalem.

23 Joab war oberster Befehlshaber über das ganze Heer Israels. Benaja, der Sohn von Jojada, befehligte Davids Leibgarde. 24 Adoniram hatte die Aufsicht über die Fronarbeiten. Joschafat, der Sohn von Ahilud, war Kanzler. 25 Schewa war Staatsschreiber. Zadok und Abjatar waren Priester 26 und auch Ira aus Jaïr war Priester im Dienst Davids.
