1 One day Ahithophel said to Absalom, ‘Here’s what I suggest. Choose 12,000 men. Start out tonight and go after David. 2 Attack him while he’s tired and weak. Fill him with terror. Then all the people with him will run away. Don’t strike down anyone except the king. 3 Bring all the other people back. After the man you want to kill is dead, everyone else will return to you. And none of the people will be harmed.’ 4 Ahithophel’s plan seemed good to Absalom. It also seemed good to all the elders of Israel. 5 But Absalom said, ‘Send for Hushai, the Arkite. Then we can find out what he suggests as well.’ 6 Hushai came to him. Absalom said, ‘Ahithophel has given us his advice. Should we do what he says? If we shouldn’t, tell us what you would do.’ 7 Hushai replied to Absalom, ‘The advice Ahithophel has given you isn’t good this time. 8 You know your father and his men. They are fighters. They are as strong as a wild bear whose cubs have been stolen from her. Besides, your father really knows how to fight. He won’t spend the night with his troops. 9 In fact, he’s probably hiding in a cave or some other place right now. Suppose he attacks your troops first. When people hear about it, they’ll say, “Many of the troops who followed Absalom have been killed.” 10 Then the hearts of your soldiers will melt away in fear. Even those as brave as a lion will be terrified. That’s because everyone in Israel knows that your father is a fighter. They know that those with him are brave. 11 ‘So here’s what I suggest. Bring together all the men of Israel from the town of Dan all the way to Beersheba. They are as many as the grains of sand on the seashore. You yourself should lead them into battle. 12 Then we’ll attack David no matter where we find him. As dew completely covers the ground, we’ll completely overpower his entire army. We won’t leave him or any of his men alive. 13 He might try to get away by going into a city. If he does, all of us will bring ropes to that city. We’ll drag the whole city down into the valley. Not even a pebble of that city will be left.’ 14 Absalom and all the men of Israel agreed. They said, ‘The advice of Hushai, the Arkite, is better than the advice of Ahithophel.’ The LORD had decided that Ahithophel’s good advice would fail. The LORD wanted to bring horrible trouble on Absalom. 15 Hushai spoke to Zadok and Abiathar, the priests. He said, ‘Ahithophel has given advice to Absalom and the elders of Israel. He suggested that they should do one thing. But I suggested something else. 16 Send a message right away. Tell David, “Don’t spend the night in the desert at a place where people cross the River Jordan. Make sure you go on across. If you don’t, you and all the people with you will be swallowed up.” ’ 17 Jonathan and Ahimaaz were staying at En Rogel just outside Jerusalem. They knew they would be in danger if anyone saw them entering the city. A female servant was supposed to go and tell them what had happened. Then they were supposed to go and tell King David. 18 But a young man saw Jonathan and Ahimaaz and told Absalom about it. So the two men left right away. They went to the house of a man in Bahurim. He had a well in his courtyard. They climbed down into it. 19 The man’s wife got a covering and spread it out over the opening of the well. Then she scattered corn on the covering. So no one knew that the men were hiding in the well. 20 Absalom’s men came to the house. They asked the woman, ‘Where are Ahimaaz and Jonathan?’ She answered, ‘They went across the brook.’ When the men looked around, they didn’t find anyone. So they returned to Jerusalem. 21 After they had gone, Jonathan and Ahimaaz climbed out of the well. They went to tell King David what they had found out. They said to him, ‘Go across the river right away. Ahithophel has told Absalom how to come after you and strike you down.’ 22 So David and all the people with him started out. They went across the River Jordan. By sunrise, everyone had crossed over. 23 Ahithophel saw that his advice wasn’t being followed. So he put a saddle on his donkey. He started out for his house in his home town. When he arrived, he made everything ready for his death. He made out his will. Then he killed himself. And so he died and was buried in his father’s tomb.

Absalom dies

24 David went to Mahanaim. Absalom went across the River Jordan with all the men of Israel. 25 Absalom had made Amasa commander of the army in place of Joab. Amasa was the son of Jether. Jether belonged to the family line of Ishmael. He had married Abigail. She was the daughter of Nahash and the sister of Zeruiah. Zeruiah was the mother of Joab. 26 Absalom and the Israelites camped in the land of Gilead. 27 David came to Mahanaim. Shobi, the son of Nahash, met him there. Shobi was from Rabbah in the land of Ammon. Makir, the son of Ammiel from Lo Debar, met him there too. So did Barzillai from Rogelim in the land of Gilead. 28 They brought beds, bowls and clay pots. They brought wheat, barley, flour, and corn that had been cooked. They brought beans and lentils. 29 They brought honey, butter, sheep, and cheese that was made from cows’ milk. They brought all that food for David and his people to eat. They said, ‘These people have become tired. They’ve become hungry and thirsty in the desert.’

Abschalom folgt dem falschen Rat

1 Ahitofel machte Abschalom noch einen weiteren Vorschlag: »Gib mir Vollmacht«, sagte er. »Ich will mir 12000 Mann auswählen und mit ihnen noch in dieser Nacht hinter David herjagen. 2 Dann bekomme ich ihn zu fassen, solange er noch erschöpft und entmutigt ist. Wenn ich ihn in diesem Zustand überfalle, werden alle seine Leute davonlaufen und ich kann ihn töten, ohne weiteres Blut zu vergießen. 3 Ich werde dir dann alle seine Leute zuführen. Alle werden zu dir kommen, wenn der eine erledigt ist, auf den du es abgesehen hast. Sein ganzes Kriegsvolk kannst du verschonen.« 4 Der Vorschlag leuchtete Abschalom ein. Auch die Ältesten Israels stimmten ihm zu. 5 Trotzdem zögerte Abschalom. »Wir wollen auch noch den Rat von Huschai, dem Arkiter, hören«, sagte er. »Ruft ihn her!« 6 Huschai kam, und Abschalom berichtete ihm, was Ahitofel geraten hatte. »Was ist deine Meinung?«, fragte Abschalom. »Sollen wir dem Vorschlag Ahitofels folgen? Oder rätst du uns etwas anderes?« 7 Huschai sagte: »Diesmal hat Ahitofel keinen guten Rat gegeben. 8 Du kennst doch deinen Vater und seine Männer! Die Männer sind alle miteinander kampferprobte Leute, und jetzt sind sie auch noch wütend wie eine Bärin, der man ihre Jungen weggenommen hat. Dein Vater aber ist kriegserfahren genug, dass er seinen Leuten keine Nachtruhe gönnen wird. 9 Er hat sich gewiss in irgendeiner Höhle oder sonst einem Hinterhalt versteckt. Wenn deine Leute in die Falle laufen und du gleich zu Anfang Verluste hast, wird es heißen: ›Die Anhänger Abschaloms haben eine Niederlage erlitten.‹ 10 Dann werden alle den Mut verlieren; selbst der Tapferste, der so mutig ist wie ein Löwe, wird verzagen. Jedermann in Israel weiß doch, was für ein siegreicher Heerführer dein Vater ist und was für erprobte Soldaten er um sich hat. 11 Deshalb rate ich dir: Rufe die wehrfähigen Männer aus dem ganzen Gebiet Israels zusammen, von Dan im Norden bis Beerscheba im Süden. Mit diesem Heer, das so unzählbar ist wie der Sand am Meer, musst du persönlich in den Kampf ziehen 12 und der Sieg ist dir sicher. Wir werden deinen Vater aufspüren und über ihn herfallen, wie der Morgentau auf die Erde fällt. Von ihm und seinen Leuten wird keiner übrig bleiben. 13 Wenn er sich in eine befestigte Stadt zurückzieht, werden die Männer Israels Seile um ihre Mauern legen und die Stadt ins Tal schleifen, sodass kein einziger Stein auf dem Berg zurückbleibt!« 14 Da riefen Abschalom und alle Männer Israels: »Huschai hat recht! Sein Rat ist besser als der Rat Ahitofels!« So sorgte der HERR dafür, dass der kluge Rat Ahitofels missachtet wurde. Denn der HERR hatte den Untergang Abschaloms beschlossen. 15 Huschai berichtete den Priestern Zadok und Abjatar von dem Rat, den Abschalom und die Ältesten Israels von Ahitofel erhalten hatten. 16 »Schickt schnell zu David«, sagte er. »Er soll nur ja nicht auf dieser Seite des Jordans bleiben, sondern den Fluss noch in dieser Nacht überqueren. Sonst sind er und alle seine Leute verloren.«

David gewinnt einen Vorsprung

17 Jonatan und Ahimaaz warteten bei der Rogel-Quelle, weil sie sich in der Stadt nicht sehen lassen durften. Eine Magd ging zu ihnen und brachte ihnen die Nachricht, die sie König David weitermelden sollten. 18 Aber ein junger Mann sah die beiden und sagte es Abschalom. Jonatan und Ahimaaz liefen los, so schnell sie konnten. In Bahurim kannten sie einen Mann, der in seinem Hof eine Zisterne hatte; in der versteckten sie sich. 19 Seine Frau legte eine Decke über die Öffnung und breitete Gerstenkörner darauf aus. 20 Als die Männer Abschaloms an das Haus kamen, fragten sie die Frau: »Wo sind Ahimaaz und Jonatan?« Sie antwortete: »Die sind dort über den Bach weitergegangen!« Die Männer durchsuchten alles, und als sie niemand fanden, kehrten sie wieder nach Jerusalem zurück. 21 Sobald sie fort waren, stiegen die beiden aus der Zisterne und brachten David die Nachricht. »Schnell über den Fluss!«, sagten sie, und sie berichteten, was für einen gefährlichen Rat Ahitofel gegeben hatte. 22 Sofort brach David mit allen seinen Leuten auf und sie überquerten den Jordan. Bei Tagesanbruch waren alle bis zum letzten Mann auf der anderen Seite. 23 Als Ahitofel sah, dass Abschalom seinen Rat nicht befolgen wollte, sattelte er seinen Esel und kehrte in seine Heimatstadt zurück. Er gab seiner Familie letzte Anweisungen und hängte sich auf. So starb er und wurde in der Grabstätte seines Vaters bestattet. 24 David hatte schon Mahanajim erreicht, als Abschalom schließlich mit dem gesamten Heer Israels den Jordan überschritt. 25 Für Joab hatte Abschalom Amasa als Heerführer eingesetzt. Er war der Sohn des Ismaëliten Jeter, seine Mutter war Abigal, eine Tochter von Isai und Schwester von Joabs Mutter Zeruja.* 26 Das Heer Israels mit Abschalom schlug im Gebiet von Gilead sein Lager auf. 27 Als David in Mahanajim ankam, erwarteten ihn dort Schobi, der Sohn von Nahasch, aus dem ammonitischen Rabba sowie Machir, der Sohn von Ammiël, aus Lo-Dabar und Barsillai aus Roglim in Gilead. 28 Sie hatten vorausgesehen, dass David und seine Leute vom Weg durch die Wüste hungrig, durstig und müde sein würden. Deshalb brachten sie Schlafmatten, Metallgefäße und Tongeschirr, Weizen und Gerste, Mehl, geröstete Körner, Bohnen und Linsen, Honig, Butter, Käse und Schafe.
