Warnings from Israel’s history

1 Brothers and sisters, I want you to know something about our people who lived long ago. They were all led by the cloud. They all walked through the Red Sea. 2 They were all baptised into Moses in the cloud and in the sea. 3 They all ate the same spiritual food. 4 They all drank the same spiritual water. They drank from the spiritual rock that went with them. That rock was Christ. 5 But God was not pleased with most of them. Their bodies were scattered in the desert. 6 Now those things happened as examples for us. They are supposed to keep us from wanting evil things. The people of Israel wanted these evil things. 7 So don’t worship statues of gods, as some of them did. It is written, ‘The people sat down to eat and drink. Then they got up to dance wildly in front of their god.’ 8 We should not commit sexual sins, as some of them did. In one day 23,000 of them died. 9 We should not test the Messiah, as some of them did. They were killed by snakes. 10 Don’t speak against God. That’s what some of the people of Israel did. And they were killed by the destroying angel. 11 Those things happened to them as examples for us. They were written down to warn us. That’s because we are living at the time when God’s work is being completed. 12 So be careful. When you think you are standing firm, you might fall. 13 You are tempted in the same way all other human beings are. God is faithful. He will not let you be tempted any more than you can take. But when you are tempted, God will give you a way out. Then you will be able to deal with it.

Sharing in the Lord’s Supper

14 My dear friends, run away from statues of gods. Don’t worship them. 15 I’m talking to people who are reasonable. Judge for yourselves what I say. 16 We give thanks for the cup at the Lord’s Supper. When we do, aren’t we sharing in the blood of Christ? When we break the bread, aren’t we sharing in the body of Christ? 17 Just as there is one loaf, so we who are many are one body. We all share the one loaf. 18 Think about the people of Israel. Don’t those who eat the offerings share in the altar? 19 Do I mean that food sacrificed to a statue of a god is anything? Do I mean that a statue of a god is anything? 20 No! But what is sacrificed by those who worship statues of gods is really sacrificed to demons. It is not sacrificed to God. I don’t want you to be sharing with demons. 21 You can’t drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too. You can’t have a part in both the Lord’s table and the table of demons. 22 Are we trying to make the Lord jealous? Are we stronger than he is?

The believer’s freedom

23 You say, ‘I have the right to do anything.’ But not everything is helpful. Again you say, ‘I have the right to do anything.’ But not everything builds us up. 24 No one should look out for their own interests. Instead, they should look out for the interests of others. 25 Eat anything sold in the meat market. Don’t ask if it’s right or wrong. 26 Scripture says, ‘The earth belongs to the Lord. And so does everything in it.’ 27 Suppose an unbeliever invites you to a meal and you want to go. Then eat anything that is put in front of you. Don’t ask if it’s right or wrong. 28 But suppose someone says to you, ‘This food has been sacrificed to a statue of a god.’ Then don’t eat it. Keep in mind the good of the person who told you. And don’t eat because of a sense of what is right and wrong. 29 I’m talking about the other person’s sense of what is right and wrong, not yours. Why is my freedom being judged by what someone else thinks? 30 Suppose I give thanks when I eat. Then why should I be blamed for eating food I thank God for? 31 So eat and drink and do everything else for the glory of God. 32 Don’t do anything that causes another person to trip and fall. It doesn’t matter if that person is a Jew or a Greek or a member of God’s church. 33 Follow my example. I try to please everyone in every way. I’m not looking out for what is good for me. I’m looking out for the interests of others. I do it so that they might be saved.

Warnung vor Selbstsicherheit: Taufe und Mahl des Herrn sind keine Garantie

1 Ich will, dass ihr euch klarmacht, Brüder und Schwestern,* 2 wie es unseren Vorfahren nach dem Auszug aus Ägypten ergangen ist. Sie waren alle unter der Wolke und gingen alle durch das Meer. Sie alle wurden durch die Wolke und das Wasser des Meeres auf Mose getauft. 3 Alle aßen auch dieselbe geistliche Speise 4 und tranken denselben geistlichen Trank. Sie tranken ja aus dem geistlichen Felsen, der mit ihnen ging, und dieser Felsen war Christus. 5 Trotzdem verwarf Gott die meisten von ihnen und ließ sie in der Wüste sterben. 6 Alle diese Ereignisse sind uns als warnendes Beispiel gegeben. Wir sollen unser Verlangen nicht auf das Böse richten, so wie sie es taten, als sie ihren Gelüsten folgten. 7 Betet auch keine Götzen an, wie es ein Teil von ihnen getan hat – es heißt ja in den Heiligen Schriften: »Sie setzten sich zum Essen und Trinken nieder und danach tanzten sie vor dem goldenen Stier.« 8 Wir wollen auch nicht Unzucht treiben wie ein Teil von ihnen; damals starben an einem Tag dreiundzwanzigtausend. 9 Wir wollen Christus nicht herausfordern wie ein Teil von ihnen; sie kamen durch Schlangen um. 10 Murrt auch nicht wie ein Teil von ihnen, die Mose und Aaron Vorwürfe machten; der Todesengel vernichtete sie. 11 Dies alles geschah mit ihnen in vorausdeutender Weise. Es ist zu unserer Warnung aufgeschrieben worden; denn wir leben in der letzten Zeit. 12 Du meinst sicher zu stehen? Gib acht, dass du nicht fällst! 13 Die Proben, auf die euer Glaube bisher gestellt worden ist, sind über das gewöhnliche Maß noch nicht hinausgegangen. Aber Gott ist treu und wird nicht zulassen, dass die Prüfung über eure Kraft geht. Wenn er euch auf die Probe stellt, sorgt er auch dafür, dass ihr sie bestehen könnt.

Teilnahme am Götzenopfer und am Mahl des Herrn sind unvereinbar

14 Meine Lieben, haltet euch also von Götzendienst fern! 15 Ihr seid doch verständige Leute; beurteilt selbst, was ich sage. 16 Denkt an den Segensbecher, über den wir beim Mahl des Herrn das Segensgebet sprechen: Gibt er uns nicht teil an dem Blut, das Christus für uns vergossen hat? Denkt an das Brot, das wir austeilen: Gibt es uns nicht teil an seinem Leib? 17 Es ist nur ein einziges Brot. Darum bilden wir alle, auch wenn wir viele sind, einen einzigen Leib; denn wir essen alle von dem einen Brot. 18 Seht doch, wie es bis heute beim Volk Israel ist! Alle, die vom Fleisch der Opfertiere essen, kommen in engste Verbindung mit Gott, dem das Opfer dargebracht wurde.* 19 Will ich damit sagen, dass das Opferfleisch etwas bedeutet? Oder dass der Götze, dem das Opfer dargebracht wurde, etwas bedeutet? 20 Nein! Aber was die Götzenverehrer opfern, das opfern sie nicht Gott, sondern den Dämonen. Ich möchte aber nicht, dass ihr euch mit Dämonen verbindet. 21 Ihr könnt nicht aus dem Becher des Herrn trinken und zugleich aus dem Becher der Dämonen. Ihr könnt nicht am Tisch des Herrn essen und am Tisch der Dämonen. 22 Oder wollen wir den Herrn herausfordern? Sind wir etwa stärker als er?

Abschließende Stellungnahme: Liebe geht vor Freiheit

23 Ihr sagt: »Alles ist erlaubt!« Mag sein, aber nicht alles ist deshalb auch schon gut. Alles ist erlaubt, aber nicht alles fördert die Gemeinde. 24 Ihr sollt nicht an euch selbst denken, sondern an die anderen. 25 Ihr könnt jedes Fleisch essen, das auf dem Markt verkauft wird. Es ist nicht nötig, dass ihr eine Gewissenssache daraus macht und nachforscht, woher das Fleisch kommt. 26 Denn es heißt: »Dem Herrn gehört die ganze Erde mit allem, was darauf lebt.« 27 Auch wenn Ungläubige euch zum Essen einladen und ihr die Einladung annehmen wollt, könnt ihr essen, was euch angeboten wird. Es ist nicht nötig, dass ihr aus Gewissensgründen nachforscht, woher das Fleisch kommt. 28 Nur wenn euch dort jemand sagt: »Das Fleisch ist von einem Opfer«, dann esst nicht davon. Unterlasst es mit Rücksicht auf die Person, die euch darauf hingewiesen hat, und mit Rücksicht auf das Gewissen. 29 Ich meine nicht euer Gewissen, sondern das ihre. Ein fremdes Gewissen darf sich allerdings nicht zum Richter über meine Freiheit machen. 30 Ich genieße das Opferfleisch mit Dank gegen Gott. Niemand hat das Recht, mich zu tadeln, wenn ich etwas esse, wofür ich Gott danke.* 31 Ich sage also: Ob ihr esst oder trinkt oder sonst etwas tut, so tut alles zur Ehre Gottes. 32 Lebt so, dass ihr für niemand ein Glaubenshindernis seid, weder für Juden noch für Nichtjuden noch für die Gemeinde Gottes. 33 Macht es so wie ich: Ich nehme in allem Rücksicht auf alle. Ich suche nicht meinen eigenen Vorteil, sondern den Vorteil aller anderen, damit sie gerettet werden.
