The king honours Mordecai
1That night the king couldn’t sleep. So he ordered the official records of his rule to be brought in. He ordered someone to read them to him.2What Mordecai had done was written there. He had uncovered the plans of Bigthana and Teresh. They were two of the king’s officers who guarded the door of the royal palace. They had decided to kill King Xerxes.3‘What great honour has Mordecai received for doing that?’ the king asked. ‘Nothing has been done for him,’ his attendants answered.4The king asked, ‘Who is in the courtyard?’ Haman had just entered the outer courtyard of the palace. He had come to speak to the king about putting Mordecai to death. He wanted to talk about putting Mordecai’s body on the pole he had prepared for him.5The king’s attendants said to him, ‘Haman is standing in the courtyard.’ ‘Bring him in,’ the king ordered.6Haman entered. Then the king asked him, ‘What should be done for the man I want to honour?’ Haman said to himself, ‘Is there anyone the king would rather honour than me?’7So he answered the king. He said, ‘Here is what you should do for the man you want to honour.8Let your servants get a royal robe you have worn. Let them bring a horse you have ridden on. Have a royal mark placed on its head.9Then give the robe and horse to one of your most noble princes. Let the robe be put on the man you want to honour. Let him be led on the horse through the city streets. Let people announce in front of him, “This is what is done for the man the king wants to honour!” ’10‘Go right away,’ the king commanded Haman. ‘Get the robe. Bring the horse. Do exactly what you have suggested. Do it for Mordecai the Jew. He’s sitting out there at the palace gate. Make sure you do everything you have suggested.’11So Haman got the robe and the horse. He put the robe on Mordecai. And he led him on horseback through the city streets. He walked along in front of him and announced, ‘This is what is done for the man the king wants to honour!’12After that, Mordecai returned to the palace gate. But Haman rushed home. He covered his head because he was very sad.13He told his wife Zeresh everything that had happened to him. He also told all his friends. His advisers and his wife Zeresh spoke to him. They said, ‘Your fall from power started with Mordecai. He’s a Jew. So now you can’t stand up against him. You are going to be destroyed!’14They were still talking with him when the king’s officials arrived. They hurried Haman away to the feast Esther had prepared.

The King Honors Mordecai
1On that night the king could not sleep. And he gave orders to bring the book of memorable deeds, the chronicles, and they were read before the king.2And it was found written how Mordecai had told about Bigthana* and Teresh, two of the king’s eunuchs, who guarded the threshold, and who had sought to lay hands on King Ahasuerus.3And the king said, “What honor or distinction has been bestowed on Mordecai for this?” The king’s young men who attended him said, “Nothing has been done for him.”4And the king said, “Who is in the court?” Now Haman had just entered the outer court of the king’s palace to speak to the king about having Mordecai hanged on the gallows* that he had prepared for him.5And the king’s young men told him, “Haman is there, standing in the court.” And the king said, “Let him come in.”6So Haman came in, and the king said to him, “What should be done to the man whom the king delights to honor?” And Haman said to himself, “Whom would the king delight to honor more than me?”7And Haman said to the king, “For the man whom the king delights to honor,8let royal robes be brought, which the king has worn, and the horse that the king has ridden, and on whose head a royal crown* is set.9And let the robes and the horse be handed over to one of the king’s most noble officials. Let them dress the man whom the king delights to honor, and let them lead him on the horse through the square of the city, proclaiming before him: ‘Thus shall it be done to the man whom the king delights to honor.’”10Then the king said to Haman, “Hurry; take the robes and the horse, as you have said, and do so to Mordecai the Jew, who sits at the king’s gate. Leave out nothing that you have mentioned.”11So Haman took the robes and the horse, and he dressed Mordecai and led him through the square of the city, proclaiming before him, “Thus shall it be done to the man whom the king delights to honor.”12Then Mordecai returned to the king’s gate. But Haman hurried to his house, mourning and with his head covered.13And Haman told his wife Zeresh and all his friends everything that had happened to him. Then his wise men and his wife Zeresh said to him, “If Mordecai, before whom you have begun to fall, is of the Jewish people, you will not overcome him but will surely fall before him.”

14While they were yet talking with him, the king’s eunuchs arrived and hurried to bring Haman to the feast that Esther had prepared.
