The seven bowls of God’s great anger

1 Then I heard a loud voice from the temple speaking to the seven angels. ‘Go’, it said. ‘Pour out the seven bowls of God’s great anger on the earth.’ 2 The first angel went and poured out his bowl on the land. Ugly and painful sores broke out on people. Those people had the mark of the beast and worshipped its statue. 3 The second angel poured out his bowl on the sea. It turned into blood like the blood of a dead person. Every living thing in the sea died. 4 The third angel poured out his bowl on the rivers and springs of water. They became blood. 5 Then I heard the angel who was in charge of the waters. He said, ‘Holy One, the way you judge is fair. You are the God who is and who was. 6 Those who worship the beast have poured out blood. They have poured out the life’s blood of your holy people and your prophets. So you have given blood to drink to those who worship the beast. That’s exactly what they should get.’ 7 Then I heard the altar reply. It said, ‘Lord God who rules over all, the way you judge is true and fair.’ 8 The fourth angel poured out his bowl on the sun. The sun was allowed to burn people with fire. 9 They were burned by the blazing heat. So they spoke evil things against the name of God, who controlled these plagues. But they refused to turn away from their sins. They did not give glory to God. 10 The fifth angel poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast. The kingdom of the beast became very dark. People chewed on their tongues because they were suffering so much. 11 They spoke evil things against the God of heaven. They did this because of their pains and their sores. But they refused to turn away from the sins they had committed. 12 The sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates. Its water dried up to prepare the way for the kings from the East. 13 Then I saw three evil spirits that looked like frogs. They came out of the mouths of the dragon, the beast and the false prophet. 14 They are spirits of demons that perform signs. They go out to gather the kings of the whole world for battle. This battle will take place on the great day of the God who rules over all. 15 ‘Look! I am coming like a thief! Blessed is anyone who stays awake and keeps their clothes on. Then they will be ready. They will not be caught naked and so be put to shame.’ 16 Then the evil spirits gathered the kings together. In the Hebrew language, the place where the kings met is called Armageddon. 17 The seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air. Out of the temple came a loud voice from the throne. It said, ‘It is done!’ 18 Then there came flashes of lightning, rumblings, thunder and a powerful earthquake. There has never been an earthquake as terrible as this. One like this hasn’t happened while human beings have lived on earth. 19 The great city split into three parts. The cities of the nations crumbled and fell. God remembered Babylon the Great. He gave Babylon the cup filled with the wine of his terrible anger. 20 Every island ran away. The mountains could not be found. 21 Huge hailstones weighing about 40 kilograms each fell from the sky. The hail crushed people. And they spoke evil things against God because of the plague. That’s because the plague of hail was so terrible.

1 Jag hörde nu en mäktig röst från det allra heligaste i templet säga till de sju änglarna: ”Gå och töm de sju skålarna med Guds vrede över jorden.” 2 Då gick den första ängeln bort och tömde sin skål över jorden, och svåra och plågsamma bölder slog upp på de människor som bar odjurets* märke och tillbad dess bild. 3 Den andra ängeln tömde sin skål över havet, och vattnet blev då som blodet från en död människa, och allt som levde i havet dog. 4 Den tredje ängeln tömde sin skål över floderna och vattenkällorna, och även de förvandlades till blod. 5 Sedan hörde jag hur ängeln som hade makten över vattnet sa: ”Rättvis är du som finns till och alltid har funnits, du Helige som har fällt denna dom. 6 Jordens invånare har dödat profeterna som framfört ditt budskap, och de människor som tillhör dig, och de har låtit deras blod rinna på jorden. Därför har du gett dem blod att dricka. Det är ett straff de har förtjänat.” 7 Och jag hörde en röst från altaret i templet säga: ”Ja, Herre Gud, du som har all makt, dina domar är sanna och rättvisa.” 8 Sedan tömde den fjärde ängeln sin skål över solen, och den fick då tillåtelse att bränna människorna med sin eld. 9 Och när människorna brändes av den våldsamma hettan förbannade de Gud som hade makt att sända sådana plågor, men ingen ångrade sin synd och vände om till Gud och gav honom äran. 10 Sedan tömde den femte ängeln sin skål över odjurets maktcentrum, och då täcktes hans rike av mörker. Och människorna bet sönder sina tungor av smärta 11 och förbannade himlens Gud för sina plågor och sina bölder, men de ångrade inte sina onda handlingar och vände om till Gud. 12 Den sjätte ängeln tömde sin skål över den stora floden Eufrat, och den torkade ut, så att vägen öppnades för makthavarna från östern. 13 Och jag såg tre onda andar som såg ut som paddor, och de kom fram ur drakens mun, ur odjurets mun och ur den falska profetens* mun. 14 Dessa demoniska andar som kan utföra under, gick ut till världens alla makthavare och övertalade dem att samla sig till strid mot Herren Jesus, på den stora dag, då Gud, som har all makt, ska döma världen. 15 ”Lyssna”, säger Jesus, ”Jag kommer lika oväntat som en tjuv! Lycklig är den som håller sig vaken och har sina kläder färdiga, så att han inte behöver gå naken och skämmas när människorna ser honom.”* 16 Och de onda andarna samlade världens alla makthavare på en plats som på hebreiska kallas Harmagedon*. 17 Till slut tömde den sjunde ängeln sin skål över luften, och då hördes en mäktig röst från tronen i det allra heligaste i templet, och den sa: ”Det är gjort!” 18 Och det blixtrade och mullrade av åska, och det blev en stor jordbävning som var så kraftig att ingen människa någonsin sett något liknande. 19 Den stora staden delades i tre delar, och många städer runt om i världen störtade samman. Gud glömde inte den stora staden Babylons synder, utan lät staden tömma bägaren med hans glödande vredes vin. 20 Alla öar försvann och bergen fanns inte mer. 21 Det föll också enorma hagel på omkring 40 kilo från himlen ner på människorna. Och människorna förbannade Gud för haglet, eftersom det var en så fruktansvärd plåga.
