The beast who comes out of the sea

1 The dragon stood on the seashore. I saw a beast coming out of the sea. It had ten horns and seven heads. There were ten crowns on its horns. On each head was an evil name that brought shame to God. 2 The beast I saw looked like a leopard. But it had feet like a bear and a mouth like a lion. The dragon gave the beast his power, his throne, and great authority. 3 One of the beast’s heads seemed to have had a deadly wound. But the wound had been healed. The whole world was amazed and followed the beast. 4 People worshipped the dragon, because he had given authority to the beast. They also worshipped the beast. They asked, ‘Who is like the beast? Who can make war against it?’ 5 The beast was given a mouth to boast and speak evil things against God. The beast was allowed to use its authority for 42 months. 6 The beast opened its mouth to speak evil things against God. It told lies about God and about the place where God lives. And it told lies about those who live in heaven with him. 7 The beast was allowed to make war against God’s holy people and to overcome them. It was given authority over every tribe, people and nation, no matter what language they spoke. 8 Many people who live on the earth will worship the beast. They are the ones whose names are not written in the Lamb’s book of life. The Lamb is the one whose death was planned before the world was created. 9 Whoever has ears should listen. 10 ‘Everyone who is supposed to be captured will be captured. Everyone who is supposed to be killed by a sword will be killed by a sword.’ So God’s people must be patient and faithful.

The beast who comes out of the earth

11 Then I saw a second beast. This one came out of the earth. It had two horns like a lamb. But it spoke like a dragon. 12 This beast had all the authority of the first beast. It did what the first beast wanted. It made the earth and all who live on it worship the first beast. The first beast was the one whose deadly wound had been healed. 13 The second beast performed great signs. It even made fire come from heaven to the earth. And the fire was seen by everyone. 14 The first beast had given the second beast the power to perform these signs. By these signs, the second beast tricked those who live on the earth. The second beast ordered people to set up a statue to honour the first beast. The first beast was the one who had been wounded by a sword and still lived. 15 The second beast was allowed to give breath to this statue so it could speak. The statue could kill all who refused to worship it. 16 It also forced everyone to receive a mark on their right hand or on their forehead. People great or small, rich or poor, free or slave had to receive the mark. 17 They could not buy or sell anything unless they had the mark. The mark is the name of the beast or the number of its name. 18 This problem requires wisdom. Anyone who is wise should figure out what the beast’s number means. It is the number of a man. And that number is 666.

Odjuret från havet

1 I min syn såg jag nu ett odjur stiga upp ur havet. Det hade tio horn och sju huvuden. Varje horn pryddes av en krona, och på alla huvuden stod ett namn som hädade* Gud. 2 Odjuret såg ut som en leopard, men hade en björns fötter och ett lejons gap.* Och draken gav det sin kraft och sin tron och stor makt. 3 Jag såg att ett av odjurets huvuden var svårt skadat, men att det dödliga såret hade läkts. Hela världen greps av beundran för odjuret och började följa det. 4 De tillbad draken för att han hade gett odjuret sådan makt, och de tillbad odjuret och sa: ”Ingen är större än odjuret! Vem kan strida mot det?” 5 Sedan fick odjuret en mun som skröt och hånade allt som var heligt och hade med Gud att göra, och det fick makt att hålla på i 42 månader*. 6 Det hädade Gud och hans rätt att bestämma, och det hädade platsen där han bor och alla som finns i himlen. 7 Det fick också makt att strida mot alla människor som tillhör Gud och besegra dem, och det fick makt att regera över alla stammar och länder och språk och folk. 8 Och en stor del av jordens invånare ska tillbe odjuret. De enda som inte ska göra det är de som har tackat ja till Guds inbjudan att få tillhöra honom, och därför har sina namn skrivna i livets bok* som finns hos det slaktade Lammet, så som Gud hade bestämt redan innan världen skapades. 9 Lyssna noga och försök att förstå! 10 På grund av detta motstånd mot odjuret kommer vissa att föras bort i fångenskap, och andra kommer att dödas med svärd. Men här gäller det för dem som tillhör Gud att envist hålla fast vid sin tro på honom.

Odjuret från jorden

11 Sedan såg jag ett annat odjur, som kom upp ur jorden. Det hade två horn som liknade ett lamms horn, och det hade en röst som en drake. 12 Det har samma makt som det första odjuret och är dess representant. Det kräver att alla jordens invånare ska tillbe det första odjuret som hade dödliga sår som läkts. 13 Och det utför stora under, det kan till och med få eld att falla från himlen medan alla ser på. 14 Genom alla dessa under som det gör på det första odjurets uppdrag, bedrar det jordens alla invånare. Och det säger till människorna att göra en stor bild av odjuret som hade fått ett svärdshugg men blivit levande igen. 15 Det får också makt att ge liv åt denna bild, så att bilden till och med kan tala och ge order om att den som inte tillber bilden ska dödas. 16 Det andra odjuret kräver att alla – både högt uppsatta personer och vanligt folk, rika och fattiga, fria och slavar – ska ha ett märke på högra handen eller på pannan. 17 Och ingen kan köpa eller sälja något om man inte har odjurets märke. Märket är antingen odjurets namn, eller det tal som står i stället för dess namn. 18 Här krävs vishet. Den som har förstånd kan räkna ut odjurets tal, för det är en människas tal, och talet är 666*.
