2.Mose 33 | New International Reader’s Version

1 Then the LORD said to Moses, ‘Leave this place. You and the people you brought up out of Egypt must leave it. Go up to the land I promised to give to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. I said to them, “I will give it to your children after you.”

2 I will send an angel ahead of you. I will drive out the Canaanites, Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites.

3 Go up to the land that has plenty of milk and honey. But I will not go with you. You are stubborn. I might destroy you on the way.’

4 When the people heard these painful words, they began to mourn. No one put on any jewellery.

5 The LORD had said to Moses, ‘Tell the Israelites, “You are stubborn. If I went with you even for a moment, I might destroy you. Now take off your jewellery. Then I will decide what to do with you.” ’

6 So the people took off their jewellery at Mount Horeb.

The tent of meeting

7 Moses used to take a tent and set it up far outside the camp. He called it the ‘tent of meeting.’ Anyone who wanted to ask the LORD a question would go to the tent of meeting outside the camp.

8 When Moses would go out to the tent, everyone would get up and stand at the entrances to their tents. They would watch Moses until he entered the tent.

9 Whenever Moses went into the tent, the pillar of cloud would come down. It would stay at the entrance while the LORD spoke with Moses.

10 The people would see the pillar of cloud standing at the entrance to the tent. Then all of them would stand and worship at the entrances to their tents.

11 The LORD would speak to Moses face to face as one would speak to a friend. Then Moses would return to the camp. But Joshua, his young helper, didn’t leave the tent. Joshua was the son of Nun.

Moses and the glory of the Lord

12 Moses said to the LORD, ‘You have been telling me, “Lead these people.” But you haven’t let me know whom you will send with me. You have said, “I know your name. I know all about you. And I am pleased with you.”

13 If you are pleased with me, teach me more about yourself. Then I can know you. And I can continue to please you. Remember that this nation is your people.’

14 The LORD replied, ‘I will go with you. And I will give you rest.’

15 Then Moses said to him, ‘If you don’t go with us, don’t send us up from here.

16 How will anyone know that you are pleased with me and your people? You must go with us. How else will we be different from all the other people on the face of the earth?’

17 The LORD said to Moses, ‘I will do exactly what you have asked. I am pleased with you. And I know your name. I know all about you.’

18 Then Moses said, ‘Now show me your glory.’

19 The LORD said, ‘I will make all my goodness pass in front of you. And I will announce my name, the LORD, in front of you. I will have mercy on whom I have mercy. And I will show love to those I love.

20 But you can’t see my face,’ he said. ‘No one can see me and stay alive.’

21 The LORD continued, ‘There is a place near me where you can stand on a rock.

22 When my glory passes by, I will put you in an opening in the rock. I will cover you with my hand until I have passed by.

23 Then I will remove my hand. You will see my back. But my face must not be seen.’

Folket ångrar sig

1 Herren sa till Mose: "Led nu detta folk som du förde ut ur Egypten till det land som jag en gång med ed lovade Abraham, Isak och Jakob att ge åt deras efterkommande.

2 Jag ska sända en ängel framför dig som ska fördriva kananeerna, amoreerna, hetiterna, perisseerna, hiveerna och jebuseerna.

3 Det är ett land som 'flyter av mjölk och honung'. Men själv ska jag inte följa med er, eftersom ni är ett sådant envist och motspänstigt folk, för jag skulle då hela tiden frestas att utplåna er."

4 När folket hörde dessa stränga ord, blev de bedrövade och tog av sig alla sina smycken.

5 Herren hade nämligen bett Mose att säga till dem: "Ni är ett envist och motspänstigt folk. Om jag var tillsammans med er bara en liten stund, så skulle jag utplåna er. Ta nu av er alla era smycken, så ska jag sedan se på vad jag ska göra med er."

6 Från den stunden bar de inte längre några smycken.

Uppenbarelsetältet

7 Mose brukade slå upp ett tält som han kallade uppenbarelsetältet utanför lägret. Den som ville rådfråga Herren fick gå ut till tältet.

8 Varje gång Mose gick dit, ställde sig alla upp och iakttog honom från ingången till sina tält till dess han kommit fram.

9 När han gått in i tältet kom molnpelaren ner och stannade framför ingången. Där var den medan Herren talade med Mose.

10 När folket såg molnpelaren föll de ner och tillbad vid ingången till sina tält.

11 Inne i uppenbarelsetältet talade Herren ansikte mot ansikte med Mose, precis som man talar med en vän. Efteråt gick Mose tillbaka till lägret, men den unge mannen, Josua, Nuns son, som var hans tjänare, stannade kvar där.

Mose vill se Gud

12 Mose talade med Herren och sa till honom: "Du har sagt till mig: 'Led detta folk till löfteslandet', men du har inte talat om vem du vill sända med mig. Du säger att du är min vän och har förtroende för mig.

13 Om det nu är så, visa mig då tydligt den väg du vill jag ska gå, så att jag kan förstå dig och vandra på det sätt du vill. Glöm inte bort att detta folk är ditt folk!"

14 Herren svarade honom: "Jag ska själv gå med dig och se till att du lyckas."

15 Mose hade nämligen sagt: "Om inte du går med oss vill vi inte ta ett enda steg till.

16 Om du inte går med oss, vem ska då kunna veta att jag och mitt folk har funnit nåd inför dina ögon och att vi är annorlunda än alla andra folk på hela jorden?"

17 Och Herren hade svarat Mose: "Ja, jag ska verkligen göra vad du har bett mig om, för du har funnit nåd inför mig och är min vän."

18 Då bad Mose att få se Guds härlighet.

19 Herren svarade: "Jag ska låta min skönhet gå förbi dig, och jag ska tala om för dig vad mitt namn 'Herren' betyder. Jag visar mig barmhärtig och nådig mot vem jag vill.

20 Men du kan inte få se mitt ansiktes härlighet, för en människa kan inte se mig och leva.

21 Men stå här på klippan bredvid mig.

22 När sedan min härlighet går förbi, ska jag ställa dig i en klyfta i klippan och övertäcka dig med min hand tills jag har gått förbi.

23 Sedan ska jag ta bort handen, och du ska få se mig på ryggen, men mitt ansikte får du inte se."
