Um zwei Dinge bitte ich

1 Worte von Agur, dem Sohn Jakes, aus Massa*: Ich habe mich abgemüht, Gott, ich habe mich abgemüht und bin am Ende ´meiner Kraft`.* 2 Ich bin dümmer als jeder andere, ein Mensch ohne Verstand. 3 Ich habe keine Weisheit erlernt und kann daher den heiligen ´Gott` nicht erkennen. 4 Wer ist zum Himmel hinauf- und ´wieder` heruntergestiegen? Wer hat mit seinen Händen den Wind eingefangen? Wer hat Wasser in einem Mantel verpackt? Wer hat alle Enden der Erde festgesetzt? Wie lautet sein Name und wie der Name seines Sohnes? Du weißt es doch! 5 Alle Worte Gottes sind geläutert ´und rein`. Er ist ein Schutzschild für ´alle`, die bei ihm Zuflucht suchen. 6 Füge seinen Worten nichts hinzu, sonst weist er dich zurecht und du stehst als Lügner da! 7 Um zwei Dinge bitte ich dich, ´Gott`, gewähre sie mir zu meinen Lebzeiten*: 8 Bewahre mich davor, zu lügen und zu betrügen; lass mich weder arm noch reich werden, sondern gib mir ´gerade` so viel, wie ich ´zum Leben` brauche. 9 Sonst werde ich ´womöglich` satt, verleugne ´dich` und sage: »Was nützt mir denn der HERR?*« Oder ich werde arm, beginne zu stehlen und ziehe damit den Namen meines Gottes in den Schmutz*. 10 Rede über einen Diener nicht schlecht bei seinem Herrn, denn sonst verflucht er dich vielleicht und du musst die Folgen tragen. 11 ´Was ist das nur für` eine Brut, die ihren Vater verflucht und ihre Mutter verächtlich behandelt*! 12 ´Was ist das nur für` eine Brut, die sich für rein und unschuldig hält, obwohl nicht einmal der gröbste Dreck abgewaschen ist! 13 ´Was ist das nur für` eine Brut, die mit hochmütigem Blick und hochgezogenen Augenbrauen* auf andere herabsieht! 14 ´Was ist das nur für` eine Brut, die Schwerter als Zähne hat und Messer als Gebiss, um damit die Armen im Lande und die Schwachen unter den Menschen aufzufressen!

15 Manche Leute benehmen sich wie Blutegel. Sie sagen: »Gib her! Gib her!« und saugen andere aus.* Drei sind unersättlich, und ´besonders` das Vierte bekommt niemals genug:* 16 das Totenreich und der Schoß einer unfruchtbaren Frau, die Erde - sie wird vom Wasser nicht satt und das Feuer - es bekommt niemals genug. 17 Wer den Vater verspottet und sich weigert, der Mutter zu gehorchen, dessen Augen werden die Raben am Bach aushacken, und die Geier werden ihn fressen. 18 Drei sind ein großes Rätsel für mich, und ´besonders` das Vierte ist mir ganz unbegreiflich: 19 wie ein Adler am Himmel entlang fliegt, wie eine Schlange über einen Felsen kriecht, wie ein Schiff auf hoher See* dahinfährt und wie ein Mann eine Frau liebt. 20 So benimmt sich eine untreue Frau: Sie genießt*, wischt sich den Mund und sagt: »Ich habe doch nichts Falsches getan!« 21 Drei versetzen das Land in Aufruhr, und ´besonders` das Vierte kann es nicht ertragen: 22 wenn ein Sklave König wird, wenn ein dummer Mensch mehr als genug hat*, 23 wenn eine verschmähte Frau einen Mann findet und wenn eine Sklavin sich über ihre Herrin erhebt. 24 Vier gehören zwar zu den Kleinsten auf der Welt, sind aber außergewöhnlich weise: 25 Die Ameisen - sie sind kein starkes Volk, aber sie legen im Sommer Vorräte an, 26 die Klippdachse - sie sind nicht kräftig, aber zwischen den Felsen schaffen sie sich eine ´sichere` Behausung, 27 die Heuschrecken - sie haben keinen König, aber sie ziehen alle zusammen geordnet aus, 28 die Eidechsen - du kannst sie mit ´bloßen` Händen fangen, aber sie ´wohnen` in königlichen Palästen. 29 Drei haben einen stattlichen Gang, und ´besonders` der Vierte schreitet eindrucksvoll daher: 30 der Löwe - er ist der König der Tiere und weicht vor keinem zurück, 31 der stolzierende Hahn, der Ziegenbock, und der König, wenn er das Heer mustert*. 32 Wenn du dich über einen anderen erheben willst, sei es aus Unvernunft oder Berechnung, leg die Hand auf den Mund ´und schweig`! 33 Denn schlägt man Sahne, dann gibt es Butter, schlägt man auf die Nase, dann fließt Blut, und schlägt man einen hochnäsigen Ton an, dann gibt es Streit.

1 The words of Agur the son of Jakeh, even the prophecy: the man spake unto Ithiel, even unto Ithiel and Ucal, 2 Surely I am more brutish than any man, and have not the understanding of a man. 3 I neither learned wisdom, nor have the knowledge of the holy. 4 Who hath ascended up into heaven, or descended? who hath gathered the wind in his fists? who hath bound the waters in a garment? who hath established all the ends of the earth? what is his name, and what is his son' name, if thou canst tell? 5 Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him. 6 Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar. 7 Two things have I required of thee; deny me them not before I die: 8 Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me: 9 Lest I be full, and deny thee , and say, Who is the LORD? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain . 10 Accuse not a servant unto his master, lest he curse thee, and thou be found guilty. 11 There is a generation that curseth their father, and doth not bless their mother. 12 There is a generation that are pure in their own eyes, and yet is not washed from their filthiness. 13 There is a generation, O how lofty are their eyes! and their eyelids are lifted up. 14 There is a generation, whose teeth are as swords, and their jaw teeth as knives, to devour the poor from off the earth, and the needy from among men. 15 The horseleach hath two daughters, crying , Give, give.
