1Gideon, der auch Jerubbaal genannt wurde, brach mit seinem ganzen Heer in aller Frühe auf. Bei der Quelle Harod errichteten sie ihr Lager. Die Midianiter lagerten nördlich von ihnen in der Ebene am Fuß des Hügels More.2Der HERR sagte zu Gideon: »Dein Heer ist zu groß. Ich kann euch* den Sieg über die Midianiter nicht geben, sonst werden sich die Israeliten am Ende vor mir brüsten und sagen: ›Wir haben uns aus eigener Kraft gerettet!‹3Darum gib im Heer bekannt: ›Wer Angst hat, soll umkehren und den Berg Gilead verlassen*.‹« Daraufhin gingen 22.000 Mann nach Hause und nur 10.000 blieben zurück.4Doch der HERR sagte zu Gideon: »Es sind immer noch zu viele. Führe sie hinunter zur Quelle. Dort will ich eine Auswahl treffen* und dir sagen, wer mit dir kommen soll und wer nicht.«5Gideon führte das Heer hinunter zur Quelle. Der HERR befahl ihm: »Stell alle, die das Wasser mit der Zunge auflecken wie ein Hund, auf die eine Seite und alle, die sich zum Trinken hinknien, ´auf die andere`.«6Die Zahl derer, die das Wasser aus der Hand aufgeleckt hatten ´wie ein Hund`, betrug dreihundert Mann. Der Rest hatte sich zum Trinken hingekniet.*7Der HERR sagte zu Gideon: »Mit Hilfe der dreihundert Mann, die das Wasser aufgeleckt haben, will ich euch befreien und euch den Sieg über die Midianiter schenken. Alle anderen sollen nach Hause gehen.«
Gideon besiegt die Midianiter
8Gideon behielt also nur die dreihundert Mann bei sich, ´die Gott ausgewählt hatte`. Von den anderen ließ er sich die Essensvorräte* und die Signalhörner aushändigen, die sie mitgebracht hatten, und schickte sie zurück nach Hause. Das Lager der Midianiter befand sich unterhalb ´des israelitischen Lagers` in der Talebene.9In dieser Nacht sagte der HERR zu Gideon: »Los, greif die Midianiter an.* Ich gebe sie in deine Hand.10Wenn du Angst hast, dann geh vorher mit deinem Diener Pura hinunter11und belausch ihre Gespräche. Das wird dir Mut geben*, sie anzugreifen.« Gideon und Pura schlichen bis zu den Wachposten, die am Rand des Lagers aufgestellt waren.12Die Midianiter, die Amelekiter und die Beduinen aus dem Osten hatten sich in der Ebene ausgebreitet wie ein Heuschreckenschwarm, und ihre Kamele waren so zahlreich wie der Sand am Meer.13Als Gideon ´die Wachen` erreichte, erzählte gerade ein Mann seinem Kameraden einen Traum. »Ich habe geträumt«, sagte er, »wie ein ´großes`, rundes Gerstenbrot in unser Lager gerollt kam. Es stieß gegen ein Zelt und kippte um. Dabei wurde das ganze Zelt umgerissen und fiel in sich zusammen.*«14Sein Kamerad antwortete: »Das kann nur eins bedeuten: ´Das Gerstenbrot steht für` den Angriff* des Israeliten Gideon, des Sohnes Joaschs. Gott wird ihm den Sieg über die Midianiter und alle anderen in unserem Lager geben.«15Als Gideon den Traum und seine Deutung hörte, warf er sich nieder ´und dankte Gott`. Dann kehrte er ins israelitische Lager zurück und rief: »Los, steht auf! Der HERR gibt das Heer der Midianiter in eure Gewalt.«16Er teilte die dreihundert Mann in drei Gruppen und gab jedem Kämpfer ein Signalhorn, eine Fackel und einen leeren Krug, um die brennende Fackel zu verbergen*.17» ´Stellt euch an den Rand des midianitschen Lagers und` macht mir alles nach«, befahl Gideon. »Wartet, bis ich am Lager angekommen bin, und dann tut dasselbe wie ich.18Sobald ich und die Männer aus meiner Gruppe das Signalhorn blasen, blast ihr es rings um das Lager auch und ruft: ›Für den HERRN und für Gideon!‹«19Gideon und seine hundert Mann erreichten das Lager zu Beginn der mittleren Nachtwache. Die Posten waren gerade abgelöst worden. Da bliesen Gideon und seine Gruppe ihre Signalhörner und zerschlugen ihre Tonkrüge,20und die beiden anderen Abteilungen taten es ihnen nach*. Alle hielten die Fackeln in der linken und die Hörner in der rechten Hand und riefen: »Wir kämpfen für den HERRN und für Gideon!«*21Dabei blieben sie rings um das midianitische Lager stehen, jeder an seinem Platz. Im Lager rannten alle durcheinander, schrien laut und versuchten zu entkommen.22Denn als die dreihundert Israeliten in ihre Signalhörner stießen, sorgte der HERR dafür, dass überall im feindlichen Lager Kämpfe ausbrachen und die Verbündeten sich gegenseitig umbrachten*. Schließlich floh das ganze Heer über Bet-Schitta zum Jordanübergang von Abel-Mehola unterhalb von Tabbat, um Richtung Zereda* zu entkommen*.
Die Efraimiter beteiligen sich am Kampf
23Nun wurden die Männer der Stämme Naftali, Ascher und Manasse zusammengerufen, um die Midianiter zu verfolgen.24Außerdem hatte Gideon Boten in das ganze Bergland von Efraim gesandt und die Efraimiter aufgefordert: »Kommt herab und stellt euch den Midianitern in den Weg! Besetzt alle Wasserstellen bis hinunter nach Bet-Bara und alle Jordanübergänge*!« Die Efraimiter folgten Gideons Aufruf und besetzten die Wasserstellen und die Jordanübergänge.25Sie nahmen zwei midianitische Anführer, Oreb (»Rabe«) und Seeb (»Wolf«), gefangen und töteten sie, Oreb bei einem Felsen und Seeb bei einer Kelter. Man nennt die beiden Orte seither Rabenfels und Wolfskelter. Danach jagten sie den fliehenden Midianitern nach. Die abgeschlagenen Köpfe der beiden Anführer brachten sie zu Gideon, der ´inzwischen mit seinen Männern` den Jordan überschritten hatte.

1Then Jerubbaal, who is Gideon, and all the people that were with him, rose up early, and pitched beside the well of Harod: so that the host of the Midianites were on the north side of them, by the hill of Moreh, in the valley.2And the LORD said unto Gideon, The people that are with thee are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hands, lest Israel vaunt themselves against me, saying, Mine own hand hath saved me.3Now therefore go to, proclaim in the ears of the people, saying, Whosoever is fearful and afraid, let him return and depart early from mount Gilead.
