1Wieder kamen die Leute von Sif zu Saul nach Gibea und meldeten ihm: »David versteckt sich auf dem Hügel Hachila, gegenüber von Jeschimon.«2Sofort rief Saul dreitausend der besten Soldaten Israels zusammen und machte sich auf den Weg in die Wüste Sif, um David dort aufzuspüren.3Als sie den Hügel Hachila erreichten, schlugen sie entlang des Weges ihr Lager auf. David hielt sich noch immer in der Wüste versteckt. Als er erfuhr, dass Saul wieder hinter ihm her war,4schickte er Kundschafter aus. Sie bestätigten ihm, dass Saul tatsächlich gekommen war.5Da machte sich David selbst auf den Weg, um Sauls Lagerplatz zu erkunden. Er sah, dass Saul und sein Heerführer Abner, der Sohn Ners, ihren Schlafplatz im innersten Ring des Lagers hatten. Die Soldaten lagerten im Kreis um Saul herum.6David wandte sich an ´seine Begleiter`, den Hetiter Ahimelech und Abischai, den Sohn der Zeruja und Bruder Joabs, und fragte: »Kommt einer von euch mit, wenn ich mich zu Saul ins Lager schleiche?« »Ich gehe mit!«, antwortete Abischai.7In der Nacht drangen David und Abischai heimlich ins Lager ein und fanden Saul schlafend im innersten Kreis. Sein Speer steckte in der Nähe seines Kopfes in der Erde. Abner und die Soldaten lagen um ihn herum.8»Heute hat Gott dir deinen Feind ausgeliefert!«, flüsterte Abischai David zu. »Ich will ihn mit seinem eigenen Speer an den Boden spießen. Ein einziger Stoß genügt.«9Doch David entgegnete: »Nein, töte ihn nicht! Wer sich an dem König vergreift, den der HERR erwählt hat*, kommt nicht ungestraft davon.10So wahr der HERR lebt: Er selbst wird Sauls Ende herbeiführen. Vielleicht stirbt er eines natürlichen Todes, wenn seine Zeit gekommen ist, oder er fällt in einer Schlacht.11Der HERR bewahre mich davor, seinem gesalbten König etwas anzutun!* Nimm jetzt den Speer neben seinem Kopf und den Wasserkrug, und lass uns von hier verschwinden!«12David nahm beides an sich, und sie machten sich davon. Niemand sah oder bemerkte etwas. Niemand wachte auf, denn der HERR hatte alle in einen tiefen Schlaf fallen lassen.13David durchquerte ´das Tal` und stieg auf der anderen Seite den Berg hinauf. In sicherer Entfernung zu Sauls Lager stand er dort oben14und rief zu den Soldaten und zu Abner, dem Sohn Ners, hinüber: »Abner, antworte mir!« »Wer bist du, dass du es wagst, so zum König herüberzuschreien?«, schrie Abner zurück.15David rief: »Du bist doch ein Mann, mit dem es keiner in Israel aufnehmen kann! Warum hast du deinen Herrn, den König, nicht besser bewacht? ´Vorhin` ist jemand ins Lager eingedrungen, der den König hätte töten können.16Das war keine Glanzleistung von dir! So wahr der HERR lebt: Ihr alle habt den Tod verdient, weil ihr euren König, den der HERR eingesetzt hat*, nicht beschützt habt.«17Da erkannte Saul Davids Stimme und rief: »Bist du das, mein Sohn David?« »Ja, mein Herr und König«, rief David zurück.18»Warum verfolgst du mich, deinen Diener? Was habe ich getan? Worin besteht meine Schuld?19Hör mich an, mein Herr und König! Wenn der HERR dich dazu verleitet hat, mich als deinen Feind zu betrachten, dann müssen wir ihn durch ein Opfer wieder gnädig stimmen*. Waren es aber Menschen, dann soll der Fluch des HERRN sie treffen! Denn sie wollen mich aus meinem Land und aus der Nähe des HERRN vertreiben.* Sie sagen: ›Geh und diene anderen Göttern!‹20Du aber lass nicht zu, dass ich auf fremdem Boden umkomme, fern vom HERRN!* Warum solltest ´du`, der König Israels, ausziehen, um einen einzelnen Floh zu fangen? Warum jagst du ´mich` wie ein Rebhuhn in den Bergen?«21Da antwortete Saul: »Ich habe Unrecht getan. Komm wieder zurück, mein Sohn David! Ich werde dir nie wieder etwas Böses antun, denn du hast heute mein Leben hoch geachtet. Ich war ein Narr und habe einen großen Fehler gemacht!«22David rief: »Hier ist dein Speer, mein König! Einer von deinen Männern soll kommen und ihn holen.23Der HERR belohnt jeden, der gerecht und aufrichtig handelt. Heute hat er dich in meine Hand gegeben. Aber ich wollte mich nicht an dem König vergreifen, den der HERR erwählt hat.24Doch sei gewiss: So kostbar dein Leben mir heute war, so kostbar ist mein Leben dem HERRN. Er wird mich retten aus jeder Gefahr.«25Saul antwortete: »Gott segne dich, mein Sohn David! Ich bin sicher: Was immer du unternimmst, wird dir gelingen!« Dann ging David fort, und Saul kehrte nach Hause zurück.

1And the Ziphites came unto Saul to Gibeah, saying, Doth not David hide himself in the hill of Hachilah, which is before Jeshimon?2Then Saul arose, and went down to the wilderness of Ziph, having three thousand chosen men of Israel with him, to seek David in the wilderness of Ziph.3And Saul pitched in the hill of Hachilah, which is before Jeshimon, by the way. But David abode in the wilderness, and he saw that Saul came after him into the wilderness.4David therefore sent out spies, and understood that Saul was come in very deed.5And David arose, and came to the place where Saul had pitched: and David beheld the place where Saul lay, and Abner the son of Ner, the captain of his host: and Saul lay in the trench, and the people pitched round about him.6Then answered David and said to Ahimelech the Hittite, and to Abishai the son of Zeruiah, brother to Joab, saying, Who will go down with me to Saul to the camp? And Abishai said, I will go down with thee.7So David and Abishai came to the people by night: and, behold, Saul lay sleeping within the trench, and his spear stuck in the ground at his bolster: but Abner and the people lay round about him.8Then said Abishai to David, God hath delivered thine enemy into thine hand this day: now therefore let me smite him, I pray thee, with the spear even to the earth at once, and I will not smite him the second time.9And David said to Abishai, Destroy him not: for who can stretch forth his hand against the LORD' anointed, and be guiltless?10David said furthermore, As the LORD liveth, the LORD shall smite him; or his day shall come to die; or he shall descend into battle, and perish.11The LORD forbid that I should stretch forth mine hand against the LORD' anointed: but, I pray thee, take thou now the spear that is at his bolster, and the cruse of water, and let us go.12So David took the spear and the cruse of water from Saul' bolster; and they gat them away, and no man saw it , nor knew it , neither awaked: for they were all asleep; because a deep sleep from the LORD was fallen upon them.13Then David went over to the other side, and stood on the top of an hill afar off; a great space being between them:14And David cried to the people, and to Abner the son of Ner, saying, Answerest thou not, Abner? Then Abner answered and said, Who art thou that criest to the king?15And David said to Abner, Art not thou a valiant man? and who is like to thee in Israel? wherefore then hast thou not kept thy lord the king? for there came one of the people in to destroy the king thy lord.16This thing is not good that thou hast done. As the LORD liveth, ye are worthy to die, because ye have not kept your master, the LORD' anointed. And now see where the king' spear is , and the cruse of water that was at his bolster.17And Saul knew David' voice, and said, Is this thy voice, my son David? And David said, It is my voice, my lord, O king.18And he said, Wherefore doth my lord thus pursue after his servant? for what have I done? or what evil is in mine hand?19Now therefore, I pray thee, let my lord the king hear the words of his servant. If the LORD have stirred thee up against me, let him accept an offering: but if they be the children of men, cursed be they before the LORD; for they have driven me out this day from abiding in the inheritance of the LORD, saying, Go, serve other gods.20Now therefore, let not my blood fall to the earth before the face of the LORD: for the king of Israel is come out to seek a flea, as when one doth hunt a partridge in the mountains.21Then said Saul, I have sinned: return, my son David: for I will no more do thee harm, because my soul was precious in thine eyes this day: behold, I have played the fool, and have erred exceedingly.22And David answered and said, Behold the king' spear! and let one of the young men come over and fetch it.23The LORD render to every man his righteousness and his faithfulness: for the LORD delivered thee into my hand to day, but I would not stretch forth mine hand against the LORD' anointed.24And, behold, as thy life was much set by this day in mine eyes, so let my life be much set by in the eyes of the LORD, and let him deliver me out of all tribulation.25Then Saul said to David, Blessed be thou, my son David: thou shalt both do great things , and also shalt still prevail. So David went on his way, and Saul returned to his place.
