1In dem Moment, als er oben am Altar stand und opfern wollte*, kam ein Bote Gottes aus Juda, den der HERR nach Bet-El gesandt hatte.2Der Bote wandte sich zum Altar und rief mit lauter Stimme, wie der HERR es ihm aufgetragen hatte: »Altar! Altar! So spricht der HERR: ›Im Königshaus David wird ein Sohn mit Namen Joschija geboren werden. Er wird auf dir die Priester* opfern, die auf dir ihre Opfer darbringen. Menschenknochen wird man auf dir verbrennen.‹«3Dann kündigte er ein Wunder an und rief: »Als Zeichen dafür, dass der HERR ´durch mich` gesprochen hat, wird der Altar bersten und die Asche ´der Opfertiere` wird auf dem Boden verstreut werden.«4König Jerobeam stand noch immer oben am Altar. Als er diese Worte hörte, streckte er seine Hand gegen den Boten Gottes aus und befahl: »Ergreift ihn!« Im selben Moment wurde sein ausgestreckter Arm steif, sodass er ihn nicht mehr zurückziehen konnte.5Gleichzeitig barst der Altar und die Asche ´der Opfertiere` wurde auf dem Boden verstreut. So traf das Zeichen ein, das der Bote Gottes im Auftrag des HERRN angekündigt hatte.6Da bat ihn der König: »Bitte versuche, den HERRN, deinen Gott, gnädig zu stimmen. Bete dafür, dass ich meinen Arm wieder bewegen kann.« Der Bote Gottes betete, und sofort löste sich die Versteifung. Der König konnte seinen Arm bewegen wie zuvor.7Da lud er den Boten Gottes ein und sagte: »Komm mit in meinen Palast und stärke dich. Ich will dir ein Geschenk geben.«8Doch der Bote Gottes erwiderte: »Auch wenn du mir die Hälfte deines Besitzes anbieten würdest, käme ich nicht mit. Ich werde hier in Bet-El nichts essen oder trinken.9Denn als der HERR mir diesen Auftrag gab, hat er mir befohlen: ›Iss und trink dort nichts. Kehr auch nicht auf demselben Weg zurück, auf dem du nach Bet-El gehst.‹«10So verließ der Bote Gottes die Stadt und ging auf einem anderen Weg nach Hause.
Der Bote Gottes lässt sich zum Ungehorsam verführen
11Damals lebte in Bet-El ein alter Prophet. Seine Söhne kamen* zu ihm und erzählten ihm alles, was der Bote Gottes an diesem Tag getan hatte. Auch von der Antwort, die er dem König ´auf dessen Einladung` gegeben hatte, berichteten sie ihm.12»Auf welchem Weg ist er denn nach Hause gegangen?«, wollte ihr Vater wissen. Sie hatten es gesehen ´und erklärten ihm`*, welchen Weg der Bote genommen hatte.13»Sattelt mir den Esel!«, befahl der alte Prophet seinen Söhnen. Das taten sie, und der Prophet bestieg das Tier.14Er ritt dem Boten Gottes hinterher und fand ihn bei einer Terebinthe, unter der er Rast machte. Er fragte: »Bist du der Bote Gottes, der aus Juda ´nach Bet-El` gekommen ist?« »Ja«, antwortete dieser.15Der alte Prophet lud ihn ein: »Komm mit in mein Haus und iss etwas.«16»Nein«, erwiderte der Bote Gottes. »Ich kann nicht mit dir ´nach Bet-El` zurückkehren und in dein Haus gehen. Ich darf in Bet-El nichts essen und nichts trinken.17Denn der HERR hat mir ausdrücklich befohlen: ›Iss und trink dort nichts. Kehr auch nicht auf demselben Weg nach Hause zurück, auf dem du nach Bet-El gehst.‹«18Der alte Prophet entgegnete: »Auch ich bin ein Prophet wie du. Ein Engel hat zu mir gesprochen und mir im Auftrag des HERRN geboten: ›Bring den Boten zurück und nimm ihn in dein Haus auf. Er soll bei dir essen und trinken.‹« Doch das war gelogen.19Aber der Bote Gottes ging mit ihm zurück nach Bet-El und aß und trank bei ihm zu Hause.20Während sie am Tisch saßen, sprach der HERR zu dem* ´alten` Propheten, der den Boten Gottes wieder zurückgeholt hatte.21Der Prophet wandte sich zu seinem Gast und rief aus: »So spricht der HERR: ›Du hast dich über meinen Befehl hinweggesetzt und das Verbot missachtet, das ´ich`, der HERR, dein Gott, ausgesprochen hatte.22Du bist ´nach Bet-El` zurückgekommen und isst und trinkst an diesem Ort, obwohl ich es dir ausdrücklich verboten hatte. Darum wirst du nicht im Grab deiner Vorfahren bestattet werden.‹«23Als der Bote Gottes seine Mahlzeit beendet hatte, sattelte man für ihn den Esel des alten Propheten, der ihn zurückgeholt hatte.24Der Bote Gottes machte sich auf den Heimweg. Doch unterwegs fiel ein Löwe über ihn her und tötete ihn. Sein Leichnam lag auf dem Weg, und der Esel und der Löwe blieben daneben stehen.25Einige Leute kamen vorbei und sahen den Leichnam und daneben den Löwen. Sie gingen nach Bet-El, wo der alte Prophet wohnte, und erzählten, was sie gesehen hatten.26Als der alte Prophet davon hörte, sagte er: »Das ist der Bote Gottes, der sich über die Anweisung des HERRN hinweggesetzt hat. Der HERR hat einen Löwen geschickt, damit er über ihn herfällt und ihn tötet. So ist eingetroffen, was der HERR ihm angekündigt hat.«27Er befahl seinen Söhnen, ihm einen Esel zu satteln,28ritt los und fand ´alles so, wie man es ihm berichtet hatte`: Der Leichnam lag auf dem Weg, und daneben standen der Esel und der Löwe. Der Löwe hatte weder den Leichnam gefressen noch den Esel zerrissen.29Der alte Prophet hob den Leichnam auf, legte ihn auf seinen Esel und brachte ihn zurück in seine Heimatstadt, um ihn zu begraben und die Totenklage zu halten.30Er bestattete ihn in der Grabkammer, die er für sich selbst vorgesehen hatte, und stimmte mit den Leuten der Stadt* die Totenklage »Ach, mein Bruder!« an.31Nach der Beisetzung sagte er zu seinen Söhnen: »Wenn ich sterbe, dann bestattet mich im selben Grab, in dem dieser Bote Gottes liegt. Lasst meine Gebeine neben seinen ruhen.32´Denn er war ein echter Prophet:` Die Worte, die er auf Befehl des HERRN gegen den Altar in Bet-El und gegen die Opferstätten in den Ortschaften Samarias ausgesprochen hat, werden sich ganz bestimmt erfüllen.«
Jerobeam lässt sich nicht warnen
33Trotz allem, was geschehen war, ließ Jerobeam sich nicht von seinem falschen Weg abbringen. Er setzte weiterhin Israeliten aus dem gewöhnlichen Volk an den Opferstätten als Priester ein. Jeden, der es wünschte, weihte er zum Priesterdienst.34Die Schuld, die er damit auf sich lud, führte später zum Untergang seines Königshauses und zur Ausrottung seiner Nachkommen.*

1And, behold, there came a man of God out of Judah by the word of the LORD unto Bethel: and Jeroboam stood by the altar to burn incense.2And he cried against the altar in the word of the LORD, and said, O altar, altar, thus saith the LORD; Behold, a child shall be born unto the house of David, Josiah by name; and upon thee shall he offer the priests of the high places that burn incense upon thee, and men' bones shall be burnt upon thee.3And he gave a sign the same day, saying, This is the sign which the LORD hath spoken; Behold, the altar shall be rent, and the ashes that are upon it shall be poured out.4And it came to pass, when king Jeroboam heard the saying of the man of God, which had cried against the altar in Bethel, that he put forth his hand from the altar, saying, Lay hold on him. And his hand, which he put forth against him, dried up, so that he could not pull it in again to him.5The altar also was rent, and the ashes poured out from the altar, according to the sign which the man of God had given by the word of the LORD.6And the king answered and said unto the man of God, Intreat now the face of the LORD thy God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored me again. And the man of God besought the LORD, and the king' hand was restored him again, and became as it was before.7And the king said unto the man of God, Come home with me, and refresh thyself, and I will give thee a reward.8And the man of God said unto the king, If thou wilt give me half thine house, I will not go in with thee, neither will I eat bread nor drink water in this place:9For so was it charged me by the word of the LORD, saying, Eat no bread, nor drink water, nor turn again by the same way that thou camest.10So he went another way, and returned not by the way that he came to Bethel.11Now there dwelt an old prophet in Bethel; and his sons came and told him all the works that the man of God had done that day in Bethel: the words which he had spoken unto the king, them they told also to their father.12And their father said unto them, What way went he? For his sons had seen what way the man of God went, which came from Judah.13And he said unto his sons, Saddle me the ass. So they saddled him the ass: and he rode thereon,14And went after the man of God, and found him sitting under an oak: and he said unto him, Art thou the man of God that camest from Judah? And he said, I am .15Then he said unto him, Come home with me, and eat bread.16And he said, I may not return with thee, nor go in with thee: neither will I eat bread nor drink water with thee in this place:17For it was said to me by the word of the LORD, Thou shalt eat no bread nor drink water there, nor turn again to go by the way that thou camest.18He said unto him, I am a prophet also as thou art ; and an angel spake unto me by the word of the LORD, saying, Bring him back with thee into thine house, that he may eat bread and drink water. But he lied unto him.19So he went back with him, and did eat bread in his house, and drank water.20And it came to pass, as they sat at the table, that the word of the LORD came unto the prophet that brought him back:21And he cried unto the man of God that came from Judah, saying, Thus saith the LORD, Forasmuch as thou hast disobeyed the mouth of the LORD, and hast not kept the commandment which the LORD thy God commanded thee,22But camest back, and hast eaten bread and drunk water in the place, of the which the LORD did say to thee, Eat no bread, and drink no water; thy carcase shall not come unto the sepulchre of thy fathers.23And it came to pass, after he had eaten bread, and after he had drunk, that he saddled for him the ass, to wit , for the prophet whom he had brought back.24And when he was gone, a lion met him by the way, and slew him: and his carcase was cast in the way, and the ass stood by it, the lion also stood by the carcase.25And, behold, men passed by, and saw the carcase cast in the way, and the lion standing by the carcase: and they came and told it in the city where the old prophet dwelt.26And when the prophet that brought him back from the way heard thereof , he said, It is the man of God, who was disobedient unto the word of the LORD: therefore the LORD hath delivered him unto the lion, which hath torn him, and slain him, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake unto him.27And he spake to his sons, saying, Saddle me the ass. And they saddled him .28And he went and found his carcase cast in the way, and the ass and the lion standing by the carcase: the lion had not eaten the carcase, nor torn the ass.29And the prophet took up the carcase of the man of God, and laid it upon the ass, and brought it back: and the old prophet came to the city, to mourn and to bury him.30And he laid his carcase in his own grave; and they mourned over him, saying , Alas, my brother!31And it came to pass, after he had buried him, that he spake to his sons, saying, When I am dead, then bury me in the sepulchre wherein the man of God is buried; lay my bones beside his bones:32For the saying which he cried by the word of the LORD against the altar in Bethel, and against all the houses of the high places which are in the cities of Samaria, shall surely come to pass.33After this thing Jeroboam returned not from his evil way, but made again of the lowest of the people priests of the high places: whosoever would, he consecrated him, and he became one of the priests of the high places.34And this thing became sin unto the house of Jeroboam, even to cut it off, and to destroy it from off the face of the earth.
