1 Cuando comas con un gobernante, fíjate bien en lo que tienes frente a ti. 2 Si tienes mucha hambre, controla tu apetito. 3 No codicies sus manjares, pues esa comida es un engaño.

4 No te fatigues tratando de hacerte rico, sé inteligente y no te preocupes por eso. 5 Porque las riquezas pueden desaparecer como si les salieran alas, se van volando como águilas.

6 No te sientes a la mesa de un tacaño, ni codicies sus manjares, 7 porque ellos son de los que siempre están pensando lo que les cuesta. «Come y bebe», te dicen, pero no lo dicen de corazón. 8 Vomitarás lo poco que comiste, y de nada habrán servido tus palabras de agradecimiento por su bondad. 9 No malgastes tus palabras con el necio, él despreciará el consejo más sabio.

10 No despojes de su tierra al huérfano indefenso cambiando de lugar los antiguos linderos, 11 porque su Defensor es muy poderoso, él mismo será tu acusador. 12 Dedica tu corazón y tus oídos a la disciplina y al conocimiento.

13 No dejes de corregir al joven; unos cuantos azotes no lo matarán. 14 La corrección física puede salvarlo de la muerte.

15 Hijo mío, qué gozo tendré si llegas a ser un hombre sabio; 16 hasta en lo más profundo de mi ser me alegraré cuando hables con justicia y rectitud.

17 No envidies a los malos; más bien, sigue siempre honrando al SEÑOR. 18 Porque seguramente hay esperanza más adelante para ti, la cual no será destruida.

19 Hijo mío, escucha y sé sabio; mantén tu corazón en el camino correcto. 20 No te juntes con los borrachos ni con los que comen más de lo que deben, 21 porque los borrachos y los glotones acaban en la pobreza, y los dormilones vestidos de harapos.

22 Escucha a tu padre que te dio la vida, y no desprecies a tu madre cuando sea anciana. 23 Adquiere la verdad y la sabiduría, la disciplina y el entendimiento ¡y nunca los vendas! 24 El padre del justo tiene de qué alegrarse. Qué felicidad es tener un hijo sabio. 25 ¡Que tu padre y tu madre se alegren! ¡Que se alegre la que te dio la vida!

26 Hijo mío, dame tu corazón y que tus ojos se deleiten en mis caminos de sabiduría. 27 Porque pozo profundo es la prostituta, y fosa angosta la mujer adúltera. 28 Como un ladrón ella espera escondida a su víctima, y hace que muchos hombres sean infieles.

29 ¿Quién tiene angustia? ¿Quién tiene tristeza? ¿Quién está siempre peleando? ¿Quién se está quejando siempre? ¿Quién es herido sin motivo? ¿Quién tiene los ojos enrojecidos? 30 El que se la pasa bebiendo vino y probando nuevas bebidas. 31 No dejes que las burbujas y el agradable sabor del vino te engañen. 32 Porque al final muerde como serpiente y envenena como víbora. 33 Tus ojos verán alucinaciones y tu mente te hará decir estupideces. 34 Te sentirás como si durmieras en alta mar, recostado en el mástil mayor. 35 Después dirás: «Me pegaron y ni siquiera lo sentí. No me di cuenta cuando me golpearon. ¿Cuándo despertaré para ir a buscar otro trago?».

1 When you sit down to eat with a ruler, observe carefully what* is before you, 2 and put a knife to your throat if you are given to appetite. 3 Do not desire his delicacies, for they are deceptive food. 4 Do not toil to acquire wealth; be discerning enough to desist. 5 When your eyes light on it, it is gone, for suddenly it sprouts wings, flying like an eagle toward heaven. 6 Do not eat the bread of a man who is stingy;* do not desire his delicacies, 7 for he is like one who is inwardly calculating.* “Eat and drink!” he says to you, but his heart is not with you. 8 You will vomit up the morsels that you have eaten, and waste your pleasant words. 9 Do not speak in the hearing of a fool, for he will despise the good sense of your words. 10 Do not move an ancient landmark or enter the fields of the fatherless, 11 for their Redeemer is strong; he will plead their cause against you. 12 Apply your heart to instruction and your ear to words of knowledge. 13 Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you strike him with a rod, he will not die. 14 If you strike him with the rod, you will save his soul from Sheol. 15 My son, if your heart is wise, my heart too will be glad. 16 My inmost being* will exult when your lips speak what is right. 17 Let not your heart envy sinners, but continue in the fear of the Lord all the day. 18 Surely there is a future, and your hope will not be cut off. 19 Hear, my son, and be wise, and direct your heart in the way. 20 Be not among drunkards* or among gluttonous eaters of meat, 21 for the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty, and slumber will clothe them with rags. 22 Listen to your father who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old. 23 Buy truth, and do not sell it; buy wisdom, instruction, and understanding. 24 The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice; he who fathers a wise son will be glad in him. 25 Let your father and mother be glad; let her who bore you rejoice. 26 My son, give me your heart, and let your eyes observe* my ways. 27 For a prostitute is a deep pit; an adulteress* is a narrow well. 28 She lies in wait like a robber and increases the traitors among mankind. 29 Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has strife? Who has complaining? Who has wounds without cause? Who has redness of eyes? 30 Those who tarry long over wine; those who go to try mixed wine. 31 Do not look at wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup and goes down smoothly. 32 In the end it bites like a serpent and stings like an adder. 33 Your eyes will see strange things, and your heart utter perverse things. 34 You will be like one who lies down in the midst of the sea, like one who lies on the top of a mast.* 35 “They struck me,” you will say,* “but I was not hurt; they beat me, but I did not feel it. When shall I awake? I must have another drink.”
