1 Mi pueblo peca como por encargo, como si sus maldades fueran leyes esculpidas con cincel de hierro o punta de diamante sobre su empedernido corazón o en las esquinas de sus altares. 2 Sus jóvenes son especialistas en cometer maldades, rinden homenaje a ídolos debajo de cada árbol, en lo alto de los montes o en las llanuras de abajo. Por eso entregaré yo todas sus propiedades valiosas a sus enemigos como precio que deben pagar por sus actos malvados. 4 Y la magnífica herencia que les tenía reservada se les escapará de las manos, y los enviaré a servir como esclavos a sus enemigos en tierras lejanas. Porque han provocado mi gran cólera la cual será muy difícil de aplacar. 5 El SEÑOR dice: Maldita la persona que ponga su confianza en cualquier mortal y aleja del SEÑOR su corazón. 6 Es como si fuera sólo un raquítico arbusto del desierto, sin esperanza para el futuro, sólo a duras penas sobreviviendo en la planicie salitrosa de un inhóspito desierto; la prosperidad lo abandonó para siempre. 7 Pero está destinada a prosperar la persona que confía en el SEÑOR y en el SEÑOR ha puesto su esperanza y fe. 8 Esta persona es semejante a un árbol plantado a orillas de un río, cuyas raíces penetran hasta encontrar el agua; este es un árbol al que no agobia el calor ni angustian los largos meses de sequía. Su follaje se mantiene siempre verde y produce con regularidad jugosos frutos. 9 Nada hay tan engañoso ni tan absolutamente perverso como el corazón. Nadie es capaz de conocer a fondo su maldad. 10 Sólo el SEÑOR lo conoce, porque el examina con cuidado todos los corazones y examina los más ocultos móviles de las personas para poder dar a cada cual su recompensa según sus hechos, según como haya vivido. 11 Como ave que llena su nido de polluelos que ella no empolló y que pronto la abandonarán y se irán volando, así es la persona que obtiene su riqueza por medios injustos. Tarde o temprano perderá sus bienes y al final de sus días será sólo una persona miserable. 12 ¡Pero nuestro refugio, oh SEÑOR, eres tú, en quien siempre podemos encontrar protección! 13 ¡Oh SEÑOR, esperanza de Israel, todos cuantos de ti se apartan serán deshonrados y avergonzados! Su futuro es muy mediocre, sólo cosas terrenales, porque han abandonado al SEÑOR, quien es como una fuente de aguas dadoras de vida. 14 ¡SEÑOR, sólo tú puedes sanarme, sólo tú puedes salvarme de todos los peligros, por eso toda la gratitud de mi corazón es sólo para ti! 15 Toda la gente se burla de mí diciendo: «¿Qué es esa palabra del SEÑOR de la que hablas sin parar? Si tus amenazas proceden realmente de Dios, ¿por qué no se cumplen?». 16 SEÑOR, no quiero que alguna terrible calamidad caiga sobre tu pueblo. Tuyo y no mío es el plan, tuyo y no mío es el mensaje que les doy. ¡No soy yo quien quiere su condena! 17 ¡SEÑOR, no me abandones! ¡Siempre te he dicho sinceramente lo que siento! 18 Acarréales confusión y congojas a cuantos me persiguen, y a mí dame paz. ¡Sí, doble destrucción para ellos!

La observancia del sábado

19 Entonces el SEÑOR me dijo: Ve y ponte de pie ante las puertas de la ciudad de Jerusalén, primero ante la puerta por donde entra y sale el rey, y luego ante cada una de las otras, 20 y dile al pueblo: ¡Escuchen el mensaje del SEÑOR, reyes de Judá y todos los habitantes de este país, y ustedes, vecinos de Jerusalén! 21 El SEÑOR dice: Sigan la instrucción del SEÑOR para que vivan; no hagan trabajo innecesario el sábado, sino respétenlo como día apartado. Este mandamiento di a sus antepasados, 23 pero ellos no escucharon ni obedecieron. Tercamente se negaron a recibir mi instrucción y seguirla. 24 Pero si ustedes obedecen mi instrucción, dice el SEÑOR, y se abstienen de trabajar el día sábado y lo guardan como día especial y apartado, 25 esta nación nunca será destruida. Los descendientes de David serán nombrados reyes aquí en Jerusalén; nunca faltarán los reyes y príncipes que cabalguen con pompa y esplendor como señal de fuerza entre el pueblo y esta ciudad nunca será destruida. 26 Y de todas las regiones de Jerusalén, y de las ciudades de Judá y de Benjamín, y más al sur, y de las tierras bajas que se localizan al oeste de Judá, acudirá el pueblo con sus ofrendas quemadas y sus ofrendas de grano y perfumes agradables, trayendo sus sacrificios para rendir homenaje al SEÑOR en su templo. 27 Pero si no me escuchan, y se niegan a dedicar para mí el sábado, y en sábado meten cargamentos de mercancía por estas puertas de Jerusalén como si fuera un día común, entonces incendiaré las puertas. El fuego se extenderá a los palacios y los destruirá, sin que nadie pueda apagar un incendio tan destructivo.

The Sin of Judah

1 “The sin of Judah is written with a pen of iron; with a point of diamond it is engraved on the tablet of their heart, and on the horns of their altars, 2 while their children remember their altars and their Asherim, beside every green tree and on the high hills, 3 on the mountains in the open country. Your wealth and all your treasures I will give for spoil as the price of your high places for sin throughout all your territory. 4 You shall loosen your hand from your heritage that I gave to you, and I will make you serve your enemies in a land that you do not know, for in my anger a fire is kindled that shall burn forever.” 5 Thus says the Lord: “Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength,* whose heart turns away from the Lord. 6 He is like a shrub in the desert, and shall not see any good come. He shall dwell in the parched places of the wilderness, in an uninhabited salt land. 7 “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. 8 He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit.” 9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it? 10 “I the Lord search the heart and test the mind,* to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds.” 11 Like the partridge that gathers a brood that she did not hatch, so is he who gets riches but not by justice; in the midst of his days they will leave him, and at his end he will be a fool. 12 A glorious throne set on high from the beginning is the place of our sanctuary. 13 O Lord, the hope of Israel, all who forsake you shall be put to shame; those who turn away from you* shall be written in the earth, for they have forsaken the Lord, the fountain of living water.

Jeremiah Prays for Deliverance

14 Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved, for you are my praise. 15 Behold, they say to me, “Where is the word of the Lord? Let it come!” 16 I have not run away from being your shepherd, nor have I desired the day of sickness. You know what came out of my lips; it was before your face. 17 Be not a terror to me; you are my refuge in the day of disaster. 18 Let those be put to shame who persecute me, but let me not be put to shame; let them be dismayed, but let me not be dismayed; bring upon them the day of disaster; destroy them with double destruction!

Keep the Sabbath Holy

19 Thus said the Lord to me: “Go and stand in the People’s Gate, by which the kings of Judah enter and by which they go out, and in all the gates of Jerusalem, 20 and say: ‘Hear the word of the Lord, you kings of Judah, and all Judah, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, who enter by these gates. 21 Thus says the Lord: Take care for the sake of your lives, and do not bear a burden on the Sabbath day or bring it in by the gates of Jerusalem. 22 And do not carry a burden out of your houses on the Sabbath or do any work, but keep the Sabbath day holy, as I commanded your fathers. 23 Yet they did not listen or incline their ear, but stiffened their neck, that they might not hear and receive instruction. 24 “But if you listen to me, declares the Lord, and bring in no burden by the gates of this city on the Sabbath day, but keep the Sabbath day holy and do no work on it, 25 then there shall enter by the gates of this city kings and princes who sit on the throne of David, riding in chariots and on horses, they and their officials, the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem. And this city shall be inhabited forever. 26 And people shall come from the cities of Judah and the places around Jerusalem, from the land of Benjamin, from the Shephelah, from the hill country, and from the Negeb, bringing burnt offerings and sacrifices, grain offerings and frankincense, and bringing thank offerings to the house of the Lord. 27 But if you do not listen to me, to keep the Sabbath day holy, and not to bear a burden and enter by the gates of Jerusalem on the Sabbath day, then I will kindle a fire in its gates, and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem and shall not be quenched.’”
