1 Pablo, apóstol de Cristo Jesús por mandato de Dios nuestro Salvador y de Cristo Jesús nuestra esperanza, 2 a Timoteo, mi verdadero hijo en la fe: Que Dios nuestro Padre y Cristo Jesús nuestro Señor te concedan su amor, misericordia y paz.

Advertencia contra los falsos maestros de la ley

3 Cuando salí para Macedonia, te encargué que te quedaras en Éfeso y les mandaras a algunos individuos que no enseñaran falsas doctrinas 4 ni prestaran atención a leyendas y a listas larguísimas de antepasados. Tales ideas provocan discusiones en vez de llevar adelante la obra de Dios que está fundada en la fe. 5 Sigue haciéndolo, para que el amor proceda de un corazón limpio, de una conciencia buena y de una fe sincera. 6 Algunos se han olvidado de esta conducta y pasan el tiempo discutiendo asuntos inútiles. 7 Pretenden ser maestros de la ley, pero no tienen ni la más ligera idea de lo que hablan, ni entienden lo que afirman con tanta seguridad. 8 Sí, la ley es buena, pero si se aplica conforme al propósito con que Dios la dio. 9 La ley no fue instituida para los justos sino para los rebeldes y desobedientes, para los malvados y pecadores, para los irreverentes y profanos, para los que maltratan a sus propios padres, para los asesinos, 10 para los adúlteros y los homosexuales, para los que trafican con vidas humanas, para los mentirosos y los que juran en falso. En fin, la ley es para todo lo que está en contra de la sana enseñanza 11 del glorioso evangelio que el bendito Dios me ha confiado.

La gracia que el Señor dio a Pablo

12 Mil gracias doy a Cristo Jesús, nuestro Señor, por escogerme como uno de sus mensajeros y darme la fortaleza necesaria para serle fiel. 13 Antes, yo me burlaba de su nombre, perseguía a sus seguidores y era un insolente. Pero Dios tuvo misericordia de mí, porque, como era incrédulo, no sabía lo que hacía. 14 ¡Qué bondadoso fue conmigo el Señor al enseñarme a confiar en él y a estar lleno del amor de Cristo Jesús! 15 Este mensaje es verdadero y todo el mundo debe creerlo: Cristo Jesús vino al mundo a salvar a los pecadores, de los cuales yo soy el primero. 16 Pero precisamente por eso, Dios tuvo misericordia de mí, para que Cristo pudiera usarme como ejemplo de lo paciente que es aun con el más vil de los pecadores, y para que los demás se den cuenta y, creyendo en él, también reciban la vida eterna. 17 Por eso, al Rey eterno, inmortal, invisible, al único Dios, sea la gloria y el honor por los siglos de los siglos. Amén. 18 Ahora, Timoteo, hijo mío, fíjate en este mandamiento que te doy: Pelea la buena batalla, tal como dicen las profecías que se hicieron en cuanto a ti. 19 Aférrate a la fe en Cristo y conserva limpia tu conciencia. Hay quienes desobedecen la voz de su conciencia y han naufragado en la fe. 20 ¡Sírvannos de ejemplo Himeneo y Alejandro, a quienes entregué a Satanás para que aprendan a no deshonrar el nombre de Dios!

1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by command of God our Savior and of Christ Jesus our hope, 2 To Timothy, my true child in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

Warning Against False Teachers

3 As I urged you when I was going to Macedonia, remain at Ephesus so that you may charge certain persons not to teach any different doctrine, 4 nor to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies, which promote speculations rather than the stewardship* from God that is by faith. 5 The aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. 6 Certain persons, by swerving from these, have wandered away into vain discussion, 7 desiring to be teachers of the law, without understanding either what they are saying or the things about which they make confident assertions. 8 Now we know that the law is good, if one uses it lawfully, 9 understanding this, that the law is not laid down for the just but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who strike their fathers and mothers, for murderers, 10 the sexually immoral, men who practice homosexuality, enslavers,* liars, perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound* doctrine, 11 in accordance with the gospel of the glory of the blessed God with which I have been entrusted.

Christ Jesus Came to Save Sinners

12 I thank him who has given me strength, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he judged me faithful, appointing me to his service, 13 though formerly I was a blasphemer, persecutor, and insolent opponent. But I received mercy because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief, 14 and the grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. 15 The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost. 16 But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life. 17 To the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever.* Amen. 18 This charge I entrust to you, Timothy, my child, in accordance with the prophecies previously made about you, that by them you may wage the good warfare, 19 holding faith and a good conscience. By rejecting this, some have made shipwreck of their faith, 20 among whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan that they may learn not to blaspheme.
