1 Then went Boaz up to the gate, and sat him down there: and, behold, the kinsman of whom Boaz spake came by; unto whom he said, Ho, such a one! turn aside, sit down here. And he turned aside, and sat down. 2 And he took ten men of the elders of the city, and said, Sit ye down here. And they sat down. 3 And he said unto the kinsman, Naomi, that is come again out of the country of Moab, selleth a parcel of land, which was our brother Elimelech': 4 And I thought to advertise thee, saying, Buy it before the inhabitants, and before the elders of my people. If thou wilt redeem it , redeem it : but if thou wilt not redeem it, then tell me, that I may know: for there is none to redeem it beside thee; and I am after thee. And he said, I will redeem it . 5 Then said Boaz, What day thou buyest the field of the hand of Naomi, thou must buy it also of Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of the dead, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance. 6 And the kinsman said, I cannot redeem it for myself, lest I mar mine own inheritance: redeem thou my right to thyself; for I cannot redeem it . 7 Now this was the manner in former time in Israel concerning redeeming and concerning changing, for to confirm all things; a man plucked off his shoe, and gave it to his neighbour: and this was a testimony in Israel. 8 Therefore the kinsman said unto Boaz, Buy it for thee. So he drew off his shoe. 9 And Boaz said unto the elders, and unto all the people, Ye are witnesses this day, that I have bought all that was Elimelech', and all that was Chilion' and Mahlon', of the hand of Naomi. 10 Moreover Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of Mahlon, have I purchased to be my wife, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance, that the name of the dead be not cut off from among his brethren, and from the gate of his place: ye are witnesses this day. 11 And all the people that were in the gate, and the elders, said, We are witnesses. The LORD make the woman that is come into thine house like Rachel and like Leah, which two did build the house of Israel: and do thou worthily in Ephratah, and be famous in Bethlehem: 12 And let thy house be like the house of Pharez, whom Tamar bare unto Judah, of the seed which the LORD shall give thee of this young woman. 13 So Boaz took Ruth, and she was his wife: and when he went in unto her, the LORD gave her conception, and she bare a son. 14 And the women said unto Naomi, Blessed be the LORD, which hath not left thee this day without a kinsman, that his name may be famous in Israel. 15 And he shall be unto thee a restorer of thy life, and a nourisher of thine old age: for thy daughter in law, which loveth thee, which is better to thee than seven sons, hath born him. 16 And Naomi took the child, and laid it in her bosom, and became nurse unto it. 17 And the women her neighbours gave it a name, saying, There is a son born to Naomi; and they called his name Obed: he is the father of Jesse, the father of David. 18 Now these are the generations of Pharez: Pharez begat Hezron, 19 And Hezron begat Ram, and Ram begat Amminadab, 20 And Amminadab begat Nahshon, and Nahshon begat Salmon, 21 And Salmon begat Boaz, and Boaz begat Obed, 22 And Obed begat Jesse, and Jesse begat David.

1 Boaz s‑a suit la poarta cetății și s‑a așezat acolo. Tocmai atunci trecea cel ce avea drept de răscumpărare, cel despre care vorbise Boaz. Boaz i‑a zis: – Prietene, întoarce‑te și așază‑te aici! Acesta s‑a întors și s‑a așezat. 2 Boaz a adus și zece bărbați dintre bătrânii* cetății și a zis: – Așezați‑vă aici. Ei s‑au așezat. 3 Apoi i‑a zis celui cu drept de răscumpărare: – Naomi, care s‑a întors din câmpiile Moabului, a scos la vânzare parcela de pământ care era a fratelui nostru, Elimelek. 4 M‑am gândit să te anunț și să‑ți spun: cumpăr‑o acum de față cu locuitorii și de față cu bătrânii poporului meu. Dacă vrei deci s‑o răscumperi, răscumpăr‑o, dar dacă nu vrei s‑o răscumperi, atunci spune‑mi, ca să știu, căci nu este nimeni înaintea ta cu drept de răscumpărare, iar după tine urmez eu. Acesta a răspuns: – O voi răscumpăra eu. 5 Boaz a zis: – În ziua în care vei cumpăra parcela de la Naomi, va trebui s‑o răscumperi și pe moabita Rut*, soția celui ce a murit, ca să păstrezi numele mortului în cadrul moștenirii lui. 6 Atunci cel ce avea drept de răscumpărare i‑a răspuns: – Nu pot s‑o răscumpăr pentru mine, ca nu cumva să‑mi ruinez propria moștenire. Răscumpăr‑o tu. Poți lua tu dreptul meu de răscumpărare, căci eu nu pot s‑o răscumpăr. 7 Pe vremuri, în Israel, pentru a întări toate rânduielile privitoare la răscumpărare și la schimbarea dreptului de răscumpărare, unul își scotea sandaua și i‑o dădea celuilalt. Aceasta slujea drept mărturie în Israel. 8 Deci cel ce avea drept de răscumpărare i‑a zis lui Boaz: – Cumpăr‑o tu. Apoi și‑a scos sandaua. 9 Atunci Boaz le‑a zis bătrânilor și întregului popor: – Astăzi sunteți martori că am cumpărat de la Naomi tot ce a aparținut lui Elimelek, lui Chilion și lui Mahlon. 10 De asemenea, pe moabita Rut, văduva lui Mahlon, am cumpărat‑o de soție, ca să păstrez numele mortului în cadrul moștenirii lui, astfel încât să nu se șteargă numele acestuia dintre frații lui și din cetatea sa. Voi sunteți martori astăzi! 11 Tot poporul care era la poartă și bătrânii i‑au răspuns: – Suntem martori. S‑o facă DOMNUL pe femeia care intră în casa ta ca pe Rahela și ca pe Lea care, împreună, au zidit Casa lui Israel. Să‑ți sporească puterea în Efrata și să‑ți faci un nume în Betleem! 12 Fie familia ta, prin sămânța pe care ți‑o va da DOMNUL din această tânără, ca familia lui Pereț care i s‑a născut lui Iuda din Tamar.

13 Boaz a luat‑o pe Rut și ea a devenit soția lui. El a intrat la ea* și DOMNUL a dat rod pântecului ei, astfel că aceasta a născut un fiu. 14 Femeile i‑au zis lui Naomi: „Binecuvântat să fie DOMNUL, Cel Ce nu te‑a lăsat astăzi fără un răscumpărător. Fie ca numele lui să ajungă vestit în Israel! 15 El îți va fi o înviorare pentru suflet și un sprijin la bătrânețe, căci l‑a născut nora ta care te iubește și care prețuiește pentru tine mai mult decât șapte fii.“ 16 Naomi a luat copilul, l‑a pus în poală și i‑a fost acestuia ca o doică. 17 Vecinele i‑au pus numele Obed, zicând: „I s‑a născut un fiu lui Naomi.“ El a fost tatăl lui Ișai, tatăl lui David. 18 Aceștia sunt descendenții lui Pereț: din Pereț s‑a născut Hețron, 19 din Hețron s‑a născut Ram, din Ram s‑a născut Aminadab, 20 din Aminadab s‑a născut Nahșon, din Nahșon s‑a născut Salmon, 21 din Salmon s‑a născut Boaz, din Boaz s‑a născut Obed, 22 din Obed s‑a născut Ișai, iar din Ișai s‑a născut David.
