1 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus,

2 And said unto his servants, This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead; and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him.

3 For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife.

4 For John said unto him, It is not lawful for thee to have her.

5 And when he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet.

6 But when Herod's birthday was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod.

7 Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatsoever she would ask.

8 And she, being before instructed of her mother, said, Give me here John Baptist's head in a charger.

9 And the king was sorry: nevertheless for the oath's sake, and them which sat with him at meat, he commanded it to be given her.

10 And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison.

11 And his head was brought in a charger, and given to the damsel: and she brought it to her mother.

12 And his disciples came, and took up the body, and buried it, and went and told Jesus.

13 When Jesus heard of it, he departed thence by ship into a desert place apart: and when the people had heard thereof, they followed him on foot out of the cities.

14 And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick.

15 And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying, This is a desert place, and the time is now past; send the multitude away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves victuals.

16 But Jesus said unto them, They need not depart; give ye them to eat.

17 And they say unto him, We have here but five loaves, and two fishes.

18 He said, Bring them hither to me.

19 And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.

20 And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full.

21 And they that had eaten were about five thousand men, beside women and children.

22 And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.

23 And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone.

24 But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary.

25 And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea.

26 And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear.

27 But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.

28 And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.

29 And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.

30 But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.

31 And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?

32 And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased.

33 Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.

34 And when they were gone over, they came into the land of Gennesaret.

35 And when the men of that place had knowledge of him, they sent out into all that country round about, and brought unto him all that were diseased;

36 And besought him that they might only touch the hem of his garment: and as many as touched were made perfectly whole.

V. Weitere Geschichten aus Jesu Wanderleben innerhalb und außerhalb Galiläas (14,1-16,12)

1 Zu jener Zeit erhielt der Vierfürst Herodes Kunde von Jesus

2 und sagte zu seinen Dienern*: »Das ist Johannes der Täufer; der ist von den Toten auferweckt worden; darum sind die Wunderkräfte in ihm wirksam.«

3 Herodes hatte nämlich den Johannes festnehmen und in Fesseln und ins Gefängnis werfen lassen mit Rücksicht auf Herodias, die Gattin seines Bruders Philippus;

4 denn Johannes hatte ihm vorgehalten: »Du darfst sie nicht (zur Frau) haben.« (3.Mose 18,16)

5 Er hätte ihn nun am liebsten ums Leben bringen lassen, fürchtete sich aber vor dem Volk, weil dieses ihn für einen Propheten hielt.

6 Als aber der Geburtstag des Herodes gefeiert wurde, tanzte die Tochter der Herodias vor der Festgesellschaft und gefiel dem Herodes so sehr,

7 daß er ihr mit einem Eide zusagte, er wolle ihr jede Bitte gewähren.

8 Da sagte sie, schon vorher von ihrer Mutter dazu angestiftet: »Gib mir hier auf einer Schüssel den Kopf Johannes des Täufers!«

9 Obgleich nun der König mißmutig darüber war, gab er doch wegen seiner Eide und mit Rücksicht auf seine Tischgäste den Befehl, man solle ihn* ihr geben;

10 er schickte also (Diener) hin und ließ Johannes im Gefängnis enthaupten.

11 Sein Kopf wurde dann auf einer Schüssel gebracht und dem Mädchen gegeben; die brachte ihn ihrer Mutter.

12 Die Jünger des Johannes kamen hierauf, holten den Leichnam und bestatteten ihn; dann gingen sie hin und berichteten es Jesus.

13 Als Jesus dies hörte, entwich er von dort in einem Boote an einen einsamen Ort, um für sich allein zu sein; doch als die Volksmenge das erfuhr, folgte sie ihm zu Fuß aus den Städten nach.

14 Als er dann (aus der Einsamkeit) wieder hervorkam und eine große Volksmenge sah, ergriff ihn Mitleid mit ihnen, und er heilte ihre Kranken.

15 Als es aber Abend geworden war, traten seine Jünger zu ihm und sagten: »Die Gegend hier ist öde und die Zeit schon vorgerückt; laß daher das Volk ziehen, damit sie in die Ortschaften gehen und sich Lebensmittel kaufen!«

16 Jesus aber erwiderte ihnen: »Sie brauchen nicht wegzugehen: gebt ihr ihnen zu essen!«

17 Da antworteten sie ihm: »Wir haben hier nichts weiter als fünf Brote und zwei Fische.«

18 Er aber sagte: »Bringt sie mir hierher!«

19 Er ließ dann die Volksscharen sich auf dem Rasen lagern, nahm die fünf Brote und die beiden Fische, blickte zum Himmel empor, sprach den Lobpreis (Gottes) und brach die Brote; hierauf gab er sie* den Jüngern, die Jünger aber teilten sie dem Volke zu.

20 Und sie aßen alle und wurden satt; dann sammelte man die Brocken, die übriggeblieben waren: zwölf Körbe voll.

21 Die Zahl derer aber, die gegessen hatten, betrug etwa fünftausend Männer, ungerechnet die Frauen und die Kinder.

22 Und sogleich nötigte Jesus seine Jünger, ins Boot zu steigen und vor ihm nach dem jenseitigen Ufer hinüberzufahren, damit er inzwischen die Volksscharen entließe.

23 Als er das getan hatte, stieg er für sich allein den Berg hinan, um zu beten; und als es Abend geworden war, befand er sich dort allein;

24 das Boot aber war schon mitten auf dem See und wurde von den Wellen hart bedrängt, denn der Wind stand ihnen entgegen.

25 In der vierten Nachtwache aber kam Jesus auf sie zu, indem er über den See dahinging.

26 Als nun die Jünger ihn so auf dem See wandeln sahen, gerieten sie in Bestürzung, weil sie dachten, es sei ein Gespenst, und sie schrien vor Angst laut auf.

27 Doch Jesus redete sie sogleich mit den Worten an: »Seid getrost: ich bin es; fürchtet euch nicht!«

28 Da antwortete ihm Petrus: »Herr, wenn du es bist, so laß mich über das Wasser zu dir kommen!«

29 Er erwiderte: »So komm!« Da stieg Petrus aus dem Boot, ging über das Wasser hin und kam auf Jesus zu;

30 doch als er den Sturmwind wahrnahm, wurde ihm angst, und als er unterzusinken begann, rief er laut: »Herr, hilf mir!«

31 Sogleich streckte Jesus die Hand aus, faßte ihn und sagte zu ihm: »Du Kleingläubiger! Warum hast du gezweifelt?«

32 Als sie dann in das Boot gestiegen waren, legte sich der Wind.

33 Die Männer im Boot aber warfen sich vor ihm nieder und sagten: »Du bist wahrhaftig Gottes Sohn!«

34 Nachdem sie dann (über den See) hinübergefahren waren, kamen sie ans Land nach Gennesaret.

35 Sobald die Bewohner dieses Ortes ihn erkannt hatten, schickten sie Boten in die ganze dortige Umgegend, und man brachte alle Kranken zu ihm,

36 und (diese) baten ihn, nur die Quaste seines Rockes* anfassen zu dürfen, und alle, die sie anfaßten, wurden völlig geheilt.
