1 Then Joseph could not refrain himself before all them that stood by him; and he cried, Cause every man to go out from me. And there stood no man with him, while Joseph made himself known unto his brethren. 2 And he wept aloud: and the Egyptians and the house of Pharaoh heard. 3 And Joseph said unto his brethren, I am Joseph; doth my father yet live? And his brethren could not answer him; for they were troubled at his presence. 4 And Joseph said unto his brethren, Come near to me, I pray you. And they came near. And he said, I am Joseph your brother, whom ye sold into Egypt. 5 Now therefore be not grieved, nor angry with yourselves, that ye sold me hither: for God did send me before you to preserve life. 6 For these two years hath the famine been in the land: and yet there are five years, in the which there shall neither be earing nor harvest. 7 And God sent me before you to preserve you a posterity in the earth, and to save your lives by a great deliverance. 8 So now it was not you that sent me hither, but God: and he hath made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house, and a ruler throughout all the land of Egypt. 9 Haste ye, and go up to my father, and say unto him, Thus saith thy son Joseph, God hath made me lord of all Egypt: come down unto me, tarry not: 10 And thou shalt dwell in the land of Goshen, and thou shalt be near unto me, thou, and thy children, and thy children' children, and thy flocks, and thy herds, and all that thou hast: 11 And there will I nourish thee; for yet there are five years of famine; lest thou, and thy household, and all that thou hast, come to poverty. 12 And, behold, your eyes see, and the eyes of my brother Benjamin, that it is my mouth that speaketh unto you. 13 And ye shall tell my father of all my glory in Egypt, and of all that ye have seen; and ye shall haste and bring down my father hither. 14 And he fell upon his brother Benjamin' neck, and wept; and Benjamin wept upon his neck. 15 Moreover he kissed all his brethren, and wept upon them: and after that his brethren talked with him. 16 And the fame thereof was heard in Pharaoh' house, saying, Joseph' brethren are come: and it pleased Pharaoh well, and his servants. 17 And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, Say unto thy brethren, This do ye; lade your beasts, and go, get you unto the land of Canaan; 18 And take your father and your households, and come unto me: and I will give you the good of the land of Egypt, and ye shall eat the fat of the land. 19 Now thou art commanded, this do ye; take you wagons out of the land of Egypt for your little ones, and for your wives, and bring your father, and come. 20 Also regard not your stuff; for the good of all the land of Egypt is yours. 21 And the children of Israel did so: and Joseph gave them wagons, according to the commandment of Pharaoh, and gave them provision for the way. 22 To all of them he gave each man changes of raiment; but to Benjamin he gave three hundred pieces of silver, and five changes of raiment. 23 And to his father he sent after this manner ; ten asses laden with the good things of Egypt, and ten she asses laden with corn and bread and meat for his father by the way. 24 So he sent his brethren away, and they departed: and he said unto them, See that ye fall not out by the way. 25 And they went up out of Egypt, and came into the land of Canaan unto Jacob their father, 26 And told him, saying, Joseph is yet alive, and he is governor over all the land of Egypt. And Jacob' heart fainted, for he believed them not. 27 And they told him all the words of Joseph, which he had said unto them: and when he saw the wagons which Joseph had sent to carry him, the spirit of Jacob their father revived: 28 And Israel said, It is enough; Joseph my son is yet alive: I will go and see him before I die.

1 Da vermochte Joseph nicht länger an sich zu halten vor allen, die um ihn her standen, sondern er rief aus: »Laßt jedermann von mir weg hinausgehen!« So war denn niemand zugegen, als Joseph sich seinen Brüdern zu erkennen gab. 2 Er brach aber in ein so lautes Weinen aus, daß die Ägypter es hörten und auch das Haus des Pharaos Kunde davon erhielt. 3 Joseph sagte aber zu seinen Brüdern: »Ich bin Joseph! Lebt mein Vater noch?« Seine Brüder vermochten aber nicht, ihm zu antworten: so bestürzt standen sie vor ihm. 4 Da sagte er zu seinen Brüdern: »Tretet doch nahe an mich heran!« Als sie nun näher getreten waren, sagte er: »Ich bin euer Bruder Joseph, den ihr nach Ägypten verkauft habt! 5 Nun beunruhigt euch aber nicht und macht euch keine Vorwürfe darüber, daß ihr mich hierher verkauft habt! Denn um uns alle am Leben zu erhalten, hat Gott mich euch vorausgesandt.«

Joseph ist von Gott ausgesandt auch zu Israels Heil

6 »Denn jetzt herrscht die Hungersnot erst zwei Jahre im Lande, und fünf Jahre stehen noch bevor, in denen kein Pflügen und kein Ernten stattfinden wird. 7 Darum hat Gott mich euch vorausgesandt, um das Fortbestehen eures Geschlechts auf Erden zu sichern und um euch, eine große Schar von Erretteten, am Leben zu erhalten. 8 So habt also nicht ihr mich hierher gebracht, sondern Gott; der hat mich dem Pharao zum Vater* gemacht und zum Herrn über sein ganzes Haus und zum Gebieter im ganzen Lande Ägypten. 9 Zieht nun eilends zu meinem Vater hinauf und meldet ihm: ›So läßt dir dein Sohn Joseph sagen: Gott hat mich zum Gebieter von ganz Ägypten gemacht: komm zu mir herab, säume nicht! 10 Du sollst im Lande Gosen wohnen und in meiner Nähe sein, du, deine Kinder und Kindeskinder samt deinem Kleinvieh und deinen Rindern und deinem ganzen Hab und Gut. 11 Ich will dich daselbst versorgen, denn noch fünf Jahre wird die Hungersnot dauern, damit du nicht verarmst*, du und dein Haus und alles, was du besitzest.‹ 12 Ihr seht es ja mit eigenen Augen, und auch mein Bruder Benjamin sieht es mit eigenen Augen, daß ich persönlich es bin, der zu euch redet. 13 Berichtet also meinem Vater alle die hohen Ehren, die ich in Ägypten habe, und alles, was ihr gesehen habt, und bringt meinen Vater eilends hierher!« 14 Darauf fiel er seinem Bruder Benjamin um den Hals und weinte, und auch Benjamin weinte an seinem Halse; 15 dann küßte er alle seine Brüder und umarmte sie unter Tränen; nun erst vermochten auch seine Brüder mit ihm zu reden.

Des Pharaos gnädige Einladung an Jakob, nach Ägypten überzusiedeln

16 Als nun die Kunde von der Ankunft der Brüder Josephs in den Palast des Pharaos drang, war sie dem Pharao und seinen Dienern angenehm. 17 Daher sagte der Pharao zu Joseph: »Sage deinen Brüdern: ›Tut also: beladet eure Lasttiere und zieht heim ins Land Kanaan, 18 holt euren Vater und eure Familien und kommt zu mir! Ich will euch den besten Teil des Landes Ägypten geben, damit ihr das Fett* des Landes genießen könnt.‹ 19 Du bist ermächtigt (ihnen zu sagen): ›Tut also: nehmt euch aus Ägypten Wagen mit für eure Kinder und Frauen, laßt auch euren Vater aufsteigen und kommt hierher! 20 Laßt es euch um euren Hausrat nicht leid sein! Denn das Beste vom ganzen Land Ägypten soll euch zuteil werden.‹«

Joseph beschenkt seine heimziehenden Brüder reichlich und ermahnt sie liebevoll

21 So taten denn die Söhne Israels also, und Joseph gab ihnen Wagen nach dem Befehl des Pharaos und außerdem Zehrung für die Reise. 22 Ihnen allen schenkte er, einem jeden, einen Festtagsanzug; dem Benjamin aber schenkte er dreihundert Silberstücke und fünf Festtagsanzüge. 23 Seinem Vater aber sandte er dementsprechend: zehn Esel, die mit den besten Erzeugnissen Ägyptens beladen waren, und zehn Eselinnen, die Getreide, Brot und Reisekost für seinen Vater trugen. 24 Alsdann entließ er seine Brüder, und sie zogen ab, nachdem er sie noch ermahnt hatte: »Erzürnt* euch nicht unterwegs!«

Jakobs Staunen und Freude und sein Entschluß, zu seinem Sohn nach Ägypten zu ziehen

25 So zogen sie denn aus Ägypten ab und kamen ins Land Kanaan zu ihrem Vater Jakob, 26 dem sie berichteten: »Joseph lebt noch und ist Gebieter über das ganze Land Ägypten!« Aber sein Herz blieb kalt dabei, denn er glaubte ihnen nicht. 27 Als sie ihm aber alles erzählten, was Joseph ihnen aufgetragen hatte, und als er die Wagen sah, die Joseph geschickt hatte, um ihn zu holen, da kam wieder Leben in den Geist ihres Vaters Jakob, 28 so daß er ausrief: »Genug! Mein Sohn Joseph lebt noch! Ich will hinziehen und ihn noch einmal sehen, ehe ich sterbe!«
