1 And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD. 2 And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground. 3 And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD. 4 And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering: 5 But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell. 6 And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen? 7 If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him. 8 And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him. 9 And the LORD said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother' keeper? 10 And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother' blood crieth unto me from the ground. 11 And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother' blood from thy hand; 12 When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth. 13 And Cain said unto the LORD, My punishment is greater than I can bear. 14 Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that every one that findeth me shall slay me. 15 And the LORD said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him. 16 And Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden. 17 And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch. 18 And unto Enoch was born Irad: and Irad begat Mehujael: and Mehujael begat Methusael: and Methusael begat Lamech. 19 And Lamech took unto him two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah. 20 And Adah bare Jabal: he was the father of such as dwell in tents, and of such as have cattle. 21 And his brother' name was Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle the harp and organ. 22 And Zillah, she also bare Tubalcain, an instructer of every artificer in brass and iron: and the sister of Tubalcain was Naamah. 23 And Lamech said unto his wives, Adah and Zillah, Hear my voice; ye wives of Lamech, hearken unto my speech: for I have slain a man to my wounding, and a young man to my hurt. 24 If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold. 25 And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she , hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew. 26 And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the LORD.

1 Eva gebar dann dem Adam, ihrem Gatten, einen Sohn Kain*. Da sagte sie: »Einen Mann* habe ich ins Dasein gerufen (eig. erworben, gewonnen) mit Hilfe des HERRN!« 2 Hierauf gebar sie nochmals, nämlich seinen Bruder Abel*; und Abel wurde ein Hirt von Kleinvieh, Kain aber ein Ackerbauer. 3 Nun begab es sich nach Verlauf geraumer Zeit, daß Kain dem HERRN eine Opfergabe von den Früchten des Ackers darbrachte; 4 und auch Abel opferte von den Erstgeburten seiner Herde, und zwar von ihren Fettstücken. Da schaute der HERR (mit Wohlgefallen) auf Abel und seine Opfergabe; 5 aber Kain und seine Gabe sah er nicht an. Darüber geriet Kain in heftige Erregung, so daß sein Angesicht sich finster senkte*. 6 Da sagte der HERR zu Kain: »Warum bist du erregt geworden, und warum hat dein Angesicht sich finster gesenkt*? 7 Wird nicht, wenn du recht handelst, dein Opfer angenommen? Lagert* nicht, wenn du böse handelst, die Sünde vor der Tür (als ein Feind, dessen) Verlangen auf dich gerichtet ist, den du aber bezwingen sollst?« 8 Hierauf sagte Kain zu seinem Bruder Abel: (»Laß uns aufs Feld gehen!«) Und als sie auf dem Felde waren, fiel Kain über seinen Bruder Abel her und schlug ihn tot. 9 Da sagte der HERR zu Kain: »Wo ist dein Bruder Abel?« Er antwortete: »Ich weiß es nicht; bin ich etwa meines Bruders Hüter?« 10 Gott aber sagte: »Was hast du getan? Ich höre das Blut deines Bruders zu mir aus dem Erdboden schreien! 11 Und nun – verflucht sollst du sein, (hinweggetrieben) vom Ackerboden, der seinen Mund aufgetan hat, um das von deiner Hand vergossene Blut deines Bruders in sich aufzunehmen! 12 Wenn du den Acker bestellst, soll er dir hinfort keinen Ertrag mehr geben: unstet und flüchtig sollst du auf der Erde sein!« 13 Da sagte Kain zum HERRN: »Meine Strafe* ist zu groß, als daß ich sie tragen könnte! 14 Du treibst mich ja heute von dem Ackerland hinweg, und ich muß mich vor deinen Augen verbergen und werde unstet und flüchtig auf der Erde sein; so wird denn jeder, der mich antrifft, mich totschlagen!« 15 Aber der HERR antwortete ihm: »Nicht also! Jeder, der Kain totschlägt, soll siebenfältiger Rache verfallen!« Hierauf brachte der HERR an Kain ein Wahrzeichen an, damit ihn niemand erschlüge, der mit ihm zusammenträfe. 16 So ging denn Kain vom Angesicht des HERRN hinweg und ließ sich im Lande Nod östlich von Eden nieder. 17 Dem Kain gebar hierauf sein Weib einen Sohn, Henoch; und als Kain dann eine Stadt* erbaute, benannte er sie nach seines Sohnes Namen Henoch. 18 Dem Henoch wurde dann Irad geboren; dieser wurde der Vater Mehujaels, Mehujael wurde der Vater Methusaels und Methusael der Vater Lamechs. 19 Lamech aber nahm sich zwei Frauen, von denen die eine Ada, die andere Zilla hieß. 20 Ada gebar dann den Jabal; dieser wurde der Stammvater der Zeltbewohner und Herdenbesitzer. 21 Sein Bruder hieß Jubal; dieser wurde der Stammvater aller Zither- und Flötenspieler. 22 Auch Zilla gebar einen Sohn, nämlich Thubalkain, den Hämmerer* von allen schneidenden Geräten aus Kupfer und Eisen. Die Schwester Thubalkains war Namma. 23 Lamech aber sagte (einst) zu seinen Frauen: »Ada und Zilla, höret meine Rede! Ihr Weiber Lamechs, vernehmet meinen Spruch! Einen Mann erschlage ich, wenn er mich verwundet, und einen Jüngling, wenn er mir eine Strieme beibringt! 24 Denn wenn Kain siebenfältig gerächt werden soll, so Lamech siebenundsiebzigfach!« 25 Dem Adam aber gebar sein Weib (Eva) nochmals einen Sohn, dem sie den Namen Seth* gab; »denn«, sagte sie, »Gott hat mir einen andern Sproß* verliehen an Stelle Abels, weil Kain ihn erschlagen hat«. 26 Auch dem Seth wurde ein Sohn geboren, den er Enos* nannte. Damals fing man an, den Namen des HERRN anzurufen.
