1 As snow in summer, and as rain in harvest, so honour is not seemly for a fool. 2 As the bird by wandering, as the swallow by flying, so the curse causeless shall not come. 3 A whip for the horse, a bridle for the ass, and a rod for the fool' back. 4 Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him. 5 Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own conceit. 6 He that sendeth a message by the hand of a fool cutteth off the feet, and drinketh damage. 7 The legs of the lame are not equal: so is a parable in the mouth of fools. 8 As he that bindeth a stone in a sling, so is he that giveth honour to a fool. 9 As a thorn goeth up into the hand of a drunkard, so is a parable in the mouth of fools. 10 The great God that formed all things both rewardeth the fool, and rewardeth transgressors. 11 As a dog returneth to his vomit, so a fool returneth to his folly. 12 Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit? there is more hope of a fool than of him. 13 The slothful man saith, There is a lion in the way; a lion is in the streets. 14 As the door turneth upon his hinges, so doth the slothful upon his bed. 15 The slothful hideth his hand in his bosom; it grieveth him to bring it again to his mouth. 16 The sluggard is wiser in his own conceit than seven men that can render a reason. 17 He that passeth by, and meddleth with strife belonging not to him, is like one that taketh a dog by the ears. 18 As a mad man who casteth firebrands, arrows, and death, 19 So is the man that deceiveth his neighbour, and saith, Am not I in sport? 20 Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth. 21 As coals are to burning coals, and wood to fire; so is a contentious man to kindle strife. 22 The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly. 23 Burning lips and a wicked heart are like a potsherd covered with silver dross. 24 He that hateth dissembleth with his lips, and layeth up deceit within him; 25 When he speaketh fair, believe him not: for there are seven abominations in his heart. 26 Whose hatred is covered by deceit, his wickedness shall be shewed before the whole congregation. 27 Whoso diggeth a pit shall fall therein: and he that rolleth a stone, it will return upon him. 28 A lying tongue hateth those that are afflicted by it; and a flattering mouth worketh ruin.

1 Wie Schnee nicht zum Sommer und Regen zur Ernte, so reimt sich Ehre nicht zum Toren. 2 Wie ein Vogel dahinfliegt und eine Schwalbe enteilt, so ist ein unverdienter Fluch: Er trifft nicht ein. 3 Dem Ross eine Peitsche und dem Esel einen Zaum und dem Toren eine Rute auf den Rücken! 4 Antworte dem Toren nicht nach seiner Torheit, dass du ihm nicht gleich wirst. 5 Antworte aber dem Toren nach seiner Torheit, dass er sich nicht weise dünke. 6 Wer eine Sache durch einen törichten Boten ausrichtet, der ist wie einer, der sich selbst die Füße abhaut und Schaden leidet. 7 Kraftlos wie die Schenkel des Lahmen, so ist die Weisheit im Munde der Toren. 8 Einem Toren Ehre antun, das ist, wie wenn einer einen edlen Stein auf einen Steinhaufen wirft. 9 Ein Spruch in eines Toren Mund ist wie ein Dornzweig in der Hand eines Trunkenen. 10 Wie ein Schütze, der jeden verwundet, so ist, wer einen Toren oder einen Vorübergehenden dingt. 11 Wie ein Hund wieder frisst, was er gespien hat, so ist der Tor, der seine Torheit immer wieder treibt. 12 Wenn du einen siehst, der sich weise dünkt, da ist für einen Toren mehr Hoffnung als für ihn. 13 Der Faule spricht: »Es ist ein junger Löwe auf dem Wege, ein Löwe auf den Gassen.« 14 Ein Fauler wendet sich im Bett wie die Tür in der Angel. 15 Der Faule steckt seine Hand in die Schüssel, und es wird ihm sauer, dass er sie zum Munde bringe. 16 Ein Fauler dünkt sich weiser als sieben, die da wissen, verständig zu antworten. 17 Wer vorübergeht und sich mengt in fremden Streit, der ist wie einer, der den Hund bei den Ohren zwackt. 18 Wie ein Wahnsinniger, der mit Geschoss und Pfeilen schießt und tötet, 19 so ist ein Mensch, der seinen Nächsten betrügt und spricht: »Ich habe nur gescherzt.« 20 Wenn kein Holz mehr da ist, so verlischt das Feuer, und wenn der Verleumder weg ist, so hört der Streit auf. 21 Wie die Kohlen die Glut und Holz das Feuer, so facht ein zänkischer Mann den Streit an. 22 Die Worte des Verleumders sind wie Leckerbissen und gehen einem glatt ein. 23 Glatte Lippen und ein böses Herz, das ist wie Tongeschirr, mit Silberschaum überzogen. 24 Der Hasser verstellt sich mit seiner Rede, aber im Herzen ist er falsch; 25 wenn er seine Stimme holdselig macht, so glaube ihm nicht; denn es sind sieben Gräuel in seinem Herzen. 26 Wer den Hass trügerisch verbirgt, dessen Bosheit wird doch vor der Gemeinde offenbar werden. 27 Wer eine Grube gräbt, der wird hineinfallen; und wer einen Stein wälzt, auf den wird er zurückkommen. 28 Eine falsche Zunge hasst den, dem sie Arges getan hat, und glatte Lippen richten Verderben an.
