1 My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation. 2 For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body. 3 Behold, we put bits in the horses' mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body. 4 Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth. 5 Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! 6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell. 7 For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind: 8 But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. 9 Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. 10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be. 11 Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter? 12 Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh. 13 Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom. 14 But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth. 15 This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. 16 For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work. 17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. 18 And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.

Die Macht der Zunge

1 Nicht jeder von euch, meine Brüder, soll Lehrer werden; da wir doch wissen, dass wir ein desto strengeres Urteil empfangen werden. 2 Denn wir verfehlen uns alle mannigfaltig. Wer sich aber im Wort nicht verfehlt, der ist ein vollkommener Mensch und kann auch den ganzen Leib im Zaum halten. 3 Wenn wir den Pferden den Zaum ins Maul legen, damit sie uns gehorchen, so lenken wir ihren ganzen Leib. 4 Siehe, auch die Schiffe, obwohl sie so groß sind und von starken Winden getrieben werden, werden sie doch gelenkt mit einem kleinen Ruder, wohin der will, der es führt. 5 So ist auch die Zunge ein kleines Glied und rechnet sich große Dinge zu. Siehe, ein kleines Feuer, welch einen Wald zündet’s an! 6 Auch die Zunge ist ein Feuer. Eine Welt voll Ungerechtigkeit ist die Zunge unter unsern Gliedern: Sie befleckt den ganzen Leib und setzt das ganze Leben in Brand und ist selbst von der Hölle entzündet. 7 Denn jede Art von Tieren und Vögeln und Schlangen und Seetieren wird gezähmt und ist gezähmt vom Menschen, 8 aber die Zunge kann kein Mensch zähmen, das aufrührerische Übel, voll tödlichen Gifts. 9 Mit ihr loben wir den Herrn und Vater, und mit ihr fluchen wir den Menschen, die nach dem Bilde Gottes gemacht sind. 10 Aus einem Munde kommt Loben und Fluchen. Das soll nicht so sein, meine Brüder und Schwestern. 11 Lässt auch die Quelle aus einem Loch Süßes und Bitteres fließen? 12 Kann auch ein Feigenbaum Oliven oder ein Weinstock Feigen tragen? So kann auch eine salzige Quelle nicht süßes Wasser geben.

Die Weisheit von oben

13 Wer ist weise und klug unter euch? Der zeige mit seinem guten Wandel seine Werke in Sanftmut und Weisheit. 14 Habt ihr aber bittern Neid und Streit in eurem Herzen, so rühmt euch nicht und lügt nicht der Wahrheit zuwider. 15 Das ist nicht die Weisheit, die von oben herabkommt, sondern sie ist irdisch, menschlich und teuflisch. 16 Denn wo Neid und Streit ist, da sind Unordnung und lauter böse Dinge. 17 Die Weisheit aber von oben her ist zuerst lauter, dann friedfertig, gütig, lässt sich etwas sagen, ist reich an Barmherzigkeit und guten Früchten, unparteiisch, ohne Heuchelei. 18 Die Frucht der Gerechtigkeit aber wird gesät in Frieden für die, die Frieden stiften.
