1 Now in the eighteenth year of king Jeroboam began Abijah to reign over Judah.

2 He reigned three years in Jerusalem. His mother' name also was Michaiah the daughter of Uriel of Gibeah. And there was war between Abijah and Jeroboam.

3 And Abijah set the battle in array with an army of valiant men of war, even four hundred thousand chosen men: Jeroboam also set the battle in array against him with eight hundred thousand chosen men, being mighty men of valour.

4 And Abijah stood up upon mount Zemaraim, which is in mount Ephraim, and said, Hear me, thou Jeroboam, and all Israel;

5 Ought ye not to know that the LORD God of Israel gave the kingdom over Israel to David for ever, even to him and to his sons by a covenant of salt?

6 Yet Jeroboam the son of Nebat, the servant of Solomon the son of David, is risen up, and hath rebelled against his lord.

7 And there are gathered unto him vain men, the children of Belial, and have strengthened themselves against Rehoboam the son of Solomon, when Rehoboam was young and tenderhearted, and could not withstand them.

8 And now ye think to withstand the kingdom of the LORD in the hand of the sons of David; and ye be a great multitude, and there are with you golden calves, which Jeroboam made you for gods.

9 Have ye not cast out the priests of the LORD, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites, and have made you priests after the manner of the nations of other lands? so that whosoever cometh to consecrate himself with a young bullock and seven rams, the same may be a priest of them that are no gods.

10 But as for us, the LORD is our God, and we have not forsaken him; and the priests, which minister unto the LORD, are the sons of Aaron, and the Levites wait upon their business:

11 And they burn unto the LORD every morning and every evening burnt sacrifices and sweet incense: the shewbread also set they in order upon the pure table; and the candlestick of gold with the lamps thereof, to burn every evening: for we keep the charge of the LORD our God; but ye have forsaken him.

12 And, behold, God himself is with us for our captain, and his priests with sounding trumpets to cry alarm against you. O children of Israel, fight ye not against the LORD God of your fathers; for ye shall not prosper.

13 But Jeroboam caused an ambushment to come about behind them: so they were before Judah, and the ambushment was behind them.

14 And when Judah looked back, behold, the battle was before and behind: and they cried unto the LORD, and the priests sounded with the trumpets.

15 Then the men of Judah gave a shout: and as the men of Judah shouted, it came to pass, that God smote Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and Judah.

16 And the children of Israel fled before Judah: and God delivered them into their hand.

17 And Abijah and his people slew them with a great slaughter: so there fell down slain of Israel five hundred thousand chosen men.

18 Thus the children of Israel were brought under at that time, and the children of Judah prevailed, because they relied upon the LORD God of their fathers.

19 And Abijah pursued after Jeroboam, and took cities from him, Bethel with the towns thereof, and Jeshanah with the towns thereof, and Ephrain with the towns thereof.

20 Neither did Jeroboam recover strength again in the days of Abijah: and the LORD struck him, and he died.

21 But Abijah waxed mighty, and married fourteen wives, and begat twenty and two sons, and sixteen daughters.

22 And the rest of the acts of Abijah, and his ways, and his sayings, are written in the story of the prophet Iddo.

Abija

1 Im achtzehnten Jahr des Königs Jerobeam wurde Abija König über Juda

2 und regierte drei Jahre zu Jerusalem. Seine Mutter hieß Michaja, eine Tochter Uriëls, aus Gibea. Es war aber Krieg zwischen Abija und Jerobeam.

3 Und Abija rüstete sich zum Kampf mit einem Heer von Kriegsleuten, vierhunderttausend Mann, auserlesenen Leuten. Jerobeam aber rüstete sich, gegen ihn zu kämpfen, mit achthunderttausend auserlesenen Leuten, streitbaren Männern.

4 Und Abija stellte sich hin oben auf den Berg Zemarajim, der im Gebirge Ephraim liegt, und sprach: Hört mir zu, Jerobeam und ganz Israel!

5 Wisst ihr nicht, dass der HERR, der Gott Israels, das Königtum über Israel David gegeben hat ewiglich, ihm und seinen Söhnen durch einen Salzbund*?

6 Aber Jerobeam, der Sohn Nebats, der Knecht Salomos, des Sohnes Davids, erhob sich und wurde seinem Herrn abtrünnig.

7 Und es schlugen sich auf seine Seite ruchlose Leute, böse Menschen, und wurden mächtiger als Rehabeam, der Sohn Salomos; denn Rehabeam war noch jung und zaghaft, sodass er sich nicht gegen sie wehrte.

8 Nun denkt ihr euch zu empören gegen das Königtum des HERRN, das in der Hand der Söhne Davids ist, weil ihr ein großer Haufe seid und die goldenen Kälber bei euch habt, die euch Jerobeam zu Göttern gemacht hat.

9 Habt ihr nicht die Priester des HERRN, die Söhne Aaron, und die Leviten verstoßen und euch eigene Priester gemacht wie die Völker in den Ländern? Wer da kommt mit einem jungen Stier und sieben Widdern, um sich die Hand füllen zu lassen, der wird Priester derer, die nicht Götter sind.

10 Wir aber sagen: Der HERR ist unser Gott; wir haben ihn nicht verlassen; und als Priester dienen dem HERRN die Söhne Aaron, und die Leviten stehen in ihrem Amt,

11 um dem HERRN alle Morgen und alle Abende Brandopfer darzubringen, dazu das gute Räucherwerk, und Brote aufzulegen auf den Tisch aus reinem Gold und den goldenen Leuchter anzuzünden mit seinen Lampen alle Abende; denn wir halten die Gebote des HERRN, unseres Gottes, ihr aber habt ihn verlassen.

12 Siehe, mit uns ist an der Spitze Gott und seine Priester und die Kriegstrompeten, um sie gegen euch zu blasen. Ihr Israeliten, streitet nicht gegen den HERRN, den Gott eurer Väter; denn es wird euch nicht gelingen!

13 Aber Jerobeam legte einen Hinterhalt, dass er ihnen in den Rücken fiele, sodass sie vor Juda waren und der Hinterhalt hinter Juda.

14 Als sich nun Juda umwandte, siehe, da wurden sie von vorn und von hinten angegriffen. Da schrien sie zum HERRN, und die Priester bliesen die Trompeten,

15 und die Männer von Juda erhoben das Kriegsgeschrei. Und als sie schrien, schlug Gott Jerobeam und ganz Israel vor Abija und Juda.

16 Und die Israeliten flohen vor Juda, und Gott gab sie in ihre Hände,

17 sodass Abija mit seinem Volk sie hart schlug, und es blieben von Israel erschlagen liegen fünfhunderttausend auserlesene Leute.

18 Also wurden die Israeliten zu der Zeit gedemütigt, aber die Judäer blieben unverzagt; denn sie verließen sich auf den HERRN, den Gott ihrer Väter.

19 Und Abija jagte Jerobeam nach und gewann ihm Städte ab: Bethel mit seinen Ortschaften, Jeschana mit seinen Ortschaften und Efron mit seinen Ortschaften,

20 sodass Jerobeam keine Macht mehr hatte, solange Abija lebte. Und der HERR schlug ihn, dass er starb.

21 Abija aber wurde mächtig. Und er nahm vierzehn Frauen und zeugte zweiundzwanzig Söhne und sechzehn Töchter.

22 Was aber mehr von Abija zu sagen ist, sein Wandel und seine Worte, das steht geschrieben in der Geschichte des Propheten Iddo.

23 Und Abija legte sich zu seinen Vätern, und sie begruben ihn in der Stadt Davids. Und sein Sohn Asa wurde König an seiner statt. Zu dessen Zeiten hatte das Land zehn Jahre Ruhe.
