1Now it came to pass upon a day, that Jonathan the son of Saul said unto the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over to the Philistines'garrison, that is on the other side. But he told not his father.2And Saul tarried in the uttermost part of Gibeah under a pomegranate tree which is in Migron: and the people that were with him were about six hundred men;3And Ahiah, the son of Ahitub, Ichabod' brother, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eli, the LORD' priest in Shiloh, wearing an ephod. And the people knew not that Jonathan was gone.4And between the passages, by which Jonathan sought to go over unto the Philistines'garrison, there was a sharp rock on the one side, and a sharp rock on the other side: and the name of the one was Bozez, and the name of the other Seneh.5The forefront of the one was situate northward over against Michmash, and the other southward over against Gibeah.6And Jonathan said to the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over unto the garrison of these uncircumcised: it may be that the LORD will work for us: for there is no restraint to the LORD to save by many or by few.7And his armourbearer said unto him, Do all that is in thine heart: turn thee; behold, I am with thee according to thy heart.8Then said Jonathan, Behold, we will pass over unto these men, and we will discover ourselves unto them.9If they say thus unto us, Tarry until we come to you; then we will stand still in our place, and will not go up unto them.10But if they say thus, Come up unto us; then we will go up: for the LORD hath delivered them into our hand: and this shall be a sign unto us.11And both of them discovered themselves unto the garrison of the Philistines: and the Philistines said, Behold, the Hebrews come forth out of the holes where they had hid themselves.12And the men of the garrison answered Jonathan and his armourbearer, and said, Come up to us, and we will shew you a thing. And Jonathan said unto his armourbearer, Come up after me: for the LORD hath delivered them into the hand of Israel.13And Jonathan climbed up upon his hands and upon his feet, and his armourbearer after him: and they fell before Jonathan; and his armourbearer slew after him.14And that first slaughter, which Jonathan and his armourbearer made, was about twenty men, within as it were an half acre of land, which a yoke of oxen might plow .15And there was trembling in the host, in the field, and among all the people: the garrison, and the spoilers, they also trembled, and the earth quaked: so it was a very great trembling.16And the watchmen of Saul in Gibeah of Benjamin looked; and, behold, the multitude melted away, and they went on beating down one another .17Then said Saul unto the people that were with him, Number now, and see who is gone from us. And when they had numbered, behold, Jonathan and his armourbearer were not there .18And Saul said unto Ahiah, Bring hither the ark of God. For the ark of God was at that time with the children of Israel.19And it came to pass, while Saul talked unto the priest, that the noise that was in the host of the Philistines went on and increased: and Saul said unto the priest, Withdraw thine hand.20And Saul and all the people that were with him assembled themselves, and they came to the battle: and, behold, every man' sword was against his fellow, and there was a very great discomfiture.21Moreover the Hebrews that were with the Philistines before that time, which went up with them into the camp from the country round about, even they also turned to be with the Israelites that were with Saul and Jonathan.22Likewise all the men of Israel which had hid themselves in mount Ephraim, when they heard that the Philistines fled, even they also followed hard after them in the battle.23So the LORD saved Israel that day: and the battle passed over unto Bethaven.24And the men of Israel were distressed that day: for Saul had adjured the people, saying, Cursed be the man that eateth any food until evening, that I may be avenged on mine enemies. So none of the people tasted any food.25And all they of the land came to a wood; and there was honey upon the ground.26And when the people were come into the wood, behold, the honey dropped; but no man put his hand to his mouth: for the people feared the oath.27But Jonathan heard not when his father charged the people with the oath: wherefore he put forth the end of the rod that was in his hand, and dipped it in an honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth; and his eyes were enlightened.28Then answered one of the people, and said, Thy father straitly charged the people with an oath, saying, Cursed be the man that eateth any food this day. And the people were faint.29Then said Jonathan, My father hath troubled the land: see, I pray you, how mine eyes have been enlightened, because I tasted a little of this honey.30How much more, if haply the people had eaten freely to day of the spoil of their enemies which they found? for had there not been now a much greater slaughter among the Philistines?31And they smote the Philistines that day from Michmash to Aijalon: and the people were very faint.32And the people flew upon the spoil, and took sheep, and oxen, and calves, and slew them on the ground: and the people did eat them with the blood.33Then they told Saul, saying, Behold, the people sin against the LORD, in that they eat with the blood. And he said, Ye have transgressed: roll a great stone unto me this day.34And Saul said, Disperse yourselves among the people, and say unto them, Bring me hither every man his ox, and every man his sheep, and slay them here, and eat; and sin not against the LORD in eating with the blood. And all the people brought every man his ox with him that night, and slew them there.35And Saul built an altar unto the LORD: the same was the first altar that he built unto the LORD.36And Saul said, Let us go down after the Philistines by night, and spoil them until the morning light, and let us not leave a man of them. And they said, Do whatsoever seemeth good unto thee. Then said the priest, Let us draw near hither unto God.37And Saul asked counsel of God, Shall I go down after the Philistines? wilt thou deliver them into the hand of Israel? But he answered him not that day.38And Saul said, Draw ye near hither, all the chief of the people: and know and see wherein this sin hath been this day.39For, as the LORD liveth, which saveth Israel, though it be in Jonathan my son, he shall surely die. But there was not a man among all the people that answered him.40Then said he unto all Israel, Be ye on one side, and I and Jonathan my son will be on the other side. And the people said unto Saul, Do what seemeth good unto thee.41Therefore Saul said unto the LORD God of Israel, Give a perfect lot . And Saul and Jonathan were taken: but the people escaped.42And Saul said, Cast lots between me and Jonathan my son. And Jonathan was taken.43Then Saul said to Jonathan, Tell me what thou hast done. And Jonathan told him, and said, I did but taste a little honey with the end of the rod that was in mine hand, and , lo, I must die.44And Saul answered, God do so and more also: for thou shalt surely die, Jonathan.45And the people said unto Saul, Shall Jonathan die, who hath wrought this great salvation in Israel? God forbid: as the LORD liveth, there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground; for he hath wrought with God this day. So the people rescued Jonathan, that he died not.46Then Saul went up from following the Philistines: and the Philistines went to their own place.47So Saul took the kingdom over Israel, and fought against all his enemies on every side, against Moab, and against the children of Ammon, and against Edom, and against the kings of Zobah, and against the Philistines: and whithersoever he turned himself, he vexed them .48And he gathered an host, and smote the Amalekites, and delivered Israel out of the hands of them that spoiled them.49Now the sons of Saul were Jonathan, and Ishui, and Melchishua: and the names of his two daughters were these ; the name of the firstborn Merab, and the name of the younger Michal:50And the name of Saul' wife was Ahinoam, the daughter of Ahimaaz: and the name of the captain of his host was Abner, the son of Ner, Saul' uncle.51And Kish was the father of Saul; and Ner the father of Abner was the son of Abiel.52And there was sore war against the Philistines all the days of Saul: and when Saul saw any strong man, or any valiant man, he took him unto him.

Aber seinem Vater sagte er nichts.2Saul aber saß am Rande des Gebietes von Gibea unter dem Granatapfelbaum, der in Migron steht; und das Volk, das bei ihm war, zählte etwa sechshundert Mann.3Und Ahija, der Sohn Ahitubs, des Bruders Ikabods, des Sohnes des Pinhas, des Sohnes Elis, des Priesters des HERRN zu Silo, trug den Priesterschurz. Das Volk wusste aber nicht, dass Jonatan weggegangen war.4Es waren aber an dem engen Wege, wo Jonatan hinüberzugehen suchte zu der Wache der Philister, zwei Felsklippen, die eine diesseits, die andere jenseits; die eine hieß Bozez, die andere Senne.5Die eine Felsklippe stand im Norden gegenüber Michmas und die andere im Süden gegenüber Geba.6Und Jonatan sprach zu seinem Waffenträger: Komm, lass uns hinübergehen zu der Wache dieser Unbeschnittenen! Vielleicht wird der HERR etwas für uns tun, denn es ist dem HERRN nicht schwer, durch viel oder wenig zu helfen.7Da antwortete ihm sein Waffenträger: Tu alles, was in deinem Herzen ist; geh nur hin! Siehe, ich bin mit dir, wie dein Herz will.8Jonatan sprach: Wohlan, wir gehen zu den Männern hinüber und zeigen uns ihnen.9Werden sie dann zu uns sagen: Steht still, bis wir zu euch herankommen!, so wollen wir an unserm Ort stehen bleiben und nicht zu ihnen hinaufgehen.10Werden sie aber sagen: Kommt zu uns herauf!, so wollen wir zu ihnen hinaufsteigen; dann hat sie der HERR in unsere Hand gegeben. Das soll uns zum Zeichen sein.11Als sie sich nun beide der Wache der Philister zeigten, sprachen die Philister: Siehe, die Hebräer sind aus den Löchern hervorgekommen, in die sie sich verkrochen hatten.12Und die Männer der Wache riefen Jonatan und seinem Waffenträger zu und sprachen: Kommt herauf zu uns, so wollen wir’s euch schon lehren! Da sprach Jonatan zu seinem Waffenträger: Steig mir nach! Der HERR hat sie in die Hand Israels gegeben.13Und Jonatan kletterte mit Händen und Füßen hinauf und sein Waffenträger ihm nach. Da fielen sie vor Jonatan, und sein Waffenträger hinter ihm gab ihnen den Todesstoß.14So traf der erste Schlag, den Jonatan und sein Waffenträger taten, ungefähr zwanzig Mann etwa auf einer halben Hufe Acker, die ein Joch Rinder pflügt.15Und es entstand ein Schrecken im Lager und auf dem freien Felde und im ganzen Volk; die Wache und die streifenden Rotten erschraken auch; und die Erde erbebte. Und so geschah ein Gottesschrecken.16Und die Wächter Sauls zu Gibea in Benjamin sahen, wie das Getümmel hin und her wogte.17Da sprach Saul zu dem Volk, das bei ihm war: Zählt und seht, wer von uns weggegangen ist! Und als sie zählten, siehe, da waren Jonatan und sein Waffenträger nicht da.18Da sprach Saul zu Ahija: Bringe den Efod herbei! Denn er trug den Efod in jener Zeit vor Israel.19Und als Saul noch mit dem Priester redete, wurde das Getümmel im Lager der Philister immer größer. Und Saul sprach zum Priester: Lass es sein!20Und Saul und das ganze Volk, das bei ihm war, sammelten sich und kamen zum Kampfplatz. Und siehe, da ging eines jeden Schwert gegen den andern, und es war ein sehr großes Getümmel.21Auch die Hebräer, die bisher bei den Philistern gewesen und mit ihnen ins Feld gezogen waren, gingen über zu denen von Israel, die mit Saul und Jonatan waren.22Und als alle Männer von Israel, die sich auf dem Gebirge Ephraim verkrochen hatten, hörten, dass die Philister flohen, jagten auch sie hinter ihnen her im Kampf.23So half der HERR Israel an jenem Tage. Und der Kampf breitete sich aus bis Bet-Awen.24Und als die Männer Israels in Bedrängnis kamen an jenem Tage, belegte Saul das Volk mit einem Fluch und schwor: Verflucht sei jedermann, der etwas isst bis zum Abend, bis ich mich an meinen Feinden räche! Da aß das ganze Volk nichts.25Und das ganze Volk kam zu den Honigwaben. Es war aber Honig auf dem Erdboden.26Und als das Volk hinkam zu den Waben, siehe, da floss der Honig. Aber niemand nahm davon etwas mit der Hand in seinen Mund; denn das Volk fürchtete den Schwur.27Jonatan aber hatte nicht gehört, dass sein Vater das Volk mit einem Schwur belegt hatte. Und er streckte seinen Stab aus, den er in seiner Hand hatte, und tauchte die Spitze in den Honigseim und führte seine Hand zum Munde; da strahlten seine Augen.28Da hob einer aus dem Volk an und sprach: Dein Vater hat das Volk mit einem Fluch belegt und gesagt: Verflucht sei jedermann, der heute etwas isst! So ist das Volk nun matt geworden.29Da sprach Jonatan: Mein Vater bringt das Land ins Unglück; seht, wie strahlend sind meine Augen geworden, weil ich ein wenig von diesem Honig gekostet habe.30Hätte doch das Volk heute gegessen von der Beute seiner Feinde, die es gemacht hat! Wäre dann die Niederlage der Philister nicht noch größer geworden?31Sie schlugen aber die Philister an jenem Tage von Michmas bis nach Ajalon. Und das Volk wurde sehr matt.32Und das Volk fiel über die Beute her, und sie nahmen Schafe und Rinder und Kälber und schlachteten sie auf der Erde; und das Volk aß das Fleisch samt dem Blut.33Da sagte man Saul an: Siehe, das Volk versündigt sich am HERRN, denn es isst das Fleisch samt dem Blut. Er sprach: Ihr habt gefrevelt; wälzt her zu mir noch heute einen großen Stein.34Und Saul sprach weiter: Zerstreut euch unter das Volk und sagt ihnen, dass ein jeder sein Rind und sein Schaf zu mir bringen soll, und schlachtet’s hier und esst, damit ihr euch nicht an dem HERRN versündigt mit dem Essen samt dem Blut. Da brachte alles Volk, ein jeder, was er hatte, noch in der Nacht herzu, und sie schlachteten es dort.35Und Saul baute dem HERRN einen Altar. Das war der erste Altar, den er dem HERRN baute.36Und Saul sprach: Lasst uns noch in der Nacht hinabziehen den Philistern nach und sie berauben, bis es lichter Morgen wird, dass wir niemand von ihnen übrig lassen. Sie antworteten: Tu alles, was dir gefällt! Aber der Priester sprach: So lasst uns erst hierher vor Gott treten.37Und Saul befragte Gott: Soll ich hinabziehen den Philistern nach? Willst du sie in Israels Hand geben? Aber er antwortete ihm an jenem Tage nicht.38Da sprach Saul: Tretet heran, alle ihr Obersten des Volks, und forscht und seht, an wem heute die Schuld liegt.39Denn so wahr der HERR lebt, der Heiland Israels: Auch wenn sie bei meinem Sohn Jonatan wäre, so soll er sterben! Aber niemand aus dem ganzen Volk antwortete ihm.40Und er sprach zu ganz Israel: Tretet ihr auf die eine Seite, ich und mein Sohn Jonatan wollen auf die andere Seite treten. Das Volk sprach zu Saul: Tu, was dir gefällt.41Und Saul sprach zum HERRN: Gott Israels, warum hast du deinem Knecht heute nicht geantwortet? Liegt die Schuld bei mir oder bei meinem Sohn Jonatan, HERR, Gott Israels, so gib das Los »Licht«; liegt die Schuld aber an deinem Volk Israel, so gib das Los »Recht«*. Da fiel das Los auf Jonatan und Saul, aber das Volk ging frei aus.42Saul sprach: Werft das Los über mich und meinen Sohn Jonatan! Da fiel das Los auf Jonatan.43Und Saul sprach zu Jonatan: Sage mir, was hast du getan? Jonatan sagte es ihm und sprach: Ich habe ein wenig Honig gekostet mit der Spitze des Stabes, den ich in meiner Hand hatte; siehe, ich bin bereit zu sterben.44Da sprach Saul: Gott tue mir dies und das; Jonatan, du musst des Todes sterben!45Aber das Volk sprach zu Saul: Sollte Jonatan sterben, der dies große Heil in Israel vollbracht hat? Das sei ferne! So wahr der HERR lebt: Es soll kein Haar von seinem Haupt auf die Erde fallen, denn Gott hat heute durch ihn geholfen. Und so löste das Volk Jonatan aus, sodass er nicht sterben musste.46Aber Saul zog herauf von den Philistern, und die Philister zogen an ihren Ort.
Sauls Kriege. Seine Familie
47Als Saul die Königsherrschaft über Israel erlangt hatte, kämpfte er gegen alle seine Feinde ringsumher: gegen die Moabiter, die Ammoniter, die Edomiter, gegen die Könige Zobas und gegen die Philister. Und wo er sich hinwandte, da gewann er den Sieg.48Und er vollbrachte tapfere Taten und schlug die Amalekiter und errettete Israel aus der Hand aller, die es ausplünderten.49Sauls Söhne waren: Jonatan, Jischwi, Malkischua. Und seine zwei Töchter hießen: die erstgeborene Merab und die jüngere Michal.50Und Sauls Frau hieß Ahinoam und war eine Tochter des Ahimaaz. Und sein Feldhauptmann hieß Abner, ein Sohn Ners, der Sauls Oheim war.51Kisch, Sauls Vater, und Ner, Abners Vater, waren Söhne Abiëls.52Es war aber der Krieg gegen die Philister schwer, solange Saul lebte. Und wo Saul einen tapferen und rüstigen Mann sah, den nahm er in seinen Dienst.
