1 Then Nahash the Ammonite came up, and encamped against Jabeshgilead: and all the men of Jabesh said unto Nahash, Make a covenant with us, and we will serve thee.

2 And Nahash the Ammonite answered them, On this condition will I make a covenant with you, that I may thrust out all your right eyes, and lay it for a reproach upon all Israel.

3 And the elders of Jabesh said unto him, Give us seven days'respite, that we may send messengers unto all the coasts of Israel: and then, if there be no man to save us, we will come out to thee.

4 Then came the messengers to Gibeah of Saul, and told the tidings in the ears of the people: and all the people lifted up their voices, and wept.

5 And, behold, Saul came after the herd out of the field; and Saul said, What aileth the people that they weep? And they told him the tidings of the men of Jabesh.

6 And the Spirit of God came upon Saul when he heard those tidings, and his anger was kindled greatly.

7 And he took a yoke of oxen, and hewed them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the coasts of Israel by the hands of messengers, saying, Whosoever cometh not forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done unto his oxen. And the fear of the LORD fell on the people, and they came out with one consent.

8 And when he numbered them in Bezek, the children of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand.

9 And they said unto the messengers that came, Thus shall ye say unto the men of Jabeshgilead, To morrow, by that time the sun be hot, ye shall have help. And the messengers came and shewed it to the men of Jabesh; and they were glad.

10 Therefore the men of Jabesh said, To morrow we will come out unto you, and ye shall do with us all that seemeth good unto you.

11 And it was so on the morrow, that Saul put the people in three companies; and they came into the midst of the host in the morning watch, and slew the Ammonites until the heat of the day: and it came to pass, that they which remained were scattered, so that two of them were not left together.

12 And the people said unto Samuel, Who is he that said, Shall Saul reign over us? bring the men, that we may put them to death.

13 And Saul said, There shall not a man be put to death this day: for to day the LORD hath wrought salvation in Israel.

14 Then said Samuel to the people, Come, and let us go to Gilgal, and renew the kingdom there.

15 And all the people went to Gilgal; and there they made Saul king before the LORD in Gilgal; and there they sacrificed sacrifices of peace offerings before the LORD; and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.

Sauls Sieg über die Ammoniter

1 Es zog aber herauf Nahasch, der Ammoniter, und belagerte Jabesch in Gilead. Und alle Männer von Jabesch sprachen zu Nahasch: Schließ einen Bund mit uns, so wollen wir dir dienen.

2 Aber Nahasch, der Ammoniter, antwortete ihnen: Das soll der Bund sein, den ich mit euch schließen will, dass ich euch allen das rechte Auge aussteche und bringe damit Schmach über ganz Israel.

3 Da sprachen zu ihm die Ältesten von Jabesch: Gib uns sieben Tage, dass wir Boten senden in das ganze Gebiet Israels; ist dann niemand da, der uns rette, so wollen wir zu dir hinausgehen.

4 Da kamen die Boten nach Gibea Sauls und sagten dies vor den Ohren des Volks. Da erhob das ganze Volk seine Stimme und weinte.

5 Und siehe, da kam Saul vom Felde hinter den Rindern her und fragte: Was ist mit dem Volk, dass es weint? Da berichteten sie ihm die Worte der Männer von Jabesch.

6 Da geriet der Geist Gottes über Saul, als er diese Worte hörte, und sein Zorn entbrannte sehr.

7 Und er nahm ein Gespann Rinder und zerstückte sie und sandte die Stücke in das ganze Gebiet Israels durch Boten und ließ sagen: Wer nicht auszieht hinter Saul und Samuel, mit dessen Rindern soll man ebenso tun. Da fiel der Schrecken des HERRN auf das Volk, dass sie auszogen wie ein Mann.

8 Und er musterte sie zu Besek, und die Israeliten waren dreihunderttausend Mann und die Männer Judas dreißigtausend.

9 Und sie sagten den Boten, die gekommen waren: So sagt den Männern von Jabesch in Gilead: Morgen soll euch Hilfe werden, wenn die Sonne beginnt, heiß zu scheinen. Als die Boten heimkamen und das den Männern von Jabesch verkündeten, wurden diese froh.

10 Und die Männer von Jabesch sprachen: Morgen wollen wir zu euch hinausgehen, dass ihr mit uns alles tut, was euch gefällt.

11 Aber am andern Morgen teilte Saul das Volk in drei Heerhaufen, und sie kamen ins Lager um die Zeit der Morgenwache und schlugen die Ammoniter, bis der Tag heiß wurde; die aber übrig blieben, wurden so zerstreut, dass von ihnen nicht zwei beieinanderblieben.

12 Da sprach das Volk zu Samuel: Wer sind die, die gesagt haben: Sollte Saul über uns herrschen? Gebt sie her, die Männer, dass wir sie töten.

13 Saul aber sprach: Es soll an diesem Tage niemand sterben; denn der HERR hat heute Heil gegeben in Israel.

14 Samuel sprach zum Volk: Kommt, lasst uns nach Gilgal gehen und dort das Königtum erneuern.

15 Da ging das ganze Volk nach Gilgal, und sie machten Saul daselbst zum König vor dem HERRN in Gilgal und opferten Dankopfer vor dem HERRN. Saul aber und alle Männer Israels freuten sich dort gar sehr.
