1 After two days was the feast of the passover, and of unleavened bread: and the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might take him by craft, and put him to death. 2 But they said, Not on the feast day, lest there be an uproar of the people. 3 And being in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at meat, there came a woman having an alabaster box of ointment of spikenard very precious; and she brake the box, and poured it on his head. 4 And there were some that had indignation within themselves, and said, Why was this waste of the ointment made? 5 For it might have been sold for more than three hundred pence, and have been given to the poor. And they murmured against her. 6 And Jesus said, Let her alone; why trouble ye her? she hath wrought a good work on me. 7 For ye have the poor with you always, and whensoever ye will ye may do them good: but me ye have not always. 8 She hath done what she could: she is come aforehand to anoint my body to the burying. 9 Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her. 10 And Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went unto the chief priests, to betray him unto them. 11 And when they heard it, they were glad, and promised to give him money. And he sought how he might conveniently betray him. 12 And the first day of unleavened bread, when they killed the passover, his disciples said unto him, Where wilt thou that we go and prepare that thou mayest eat the passover? 13 And he sendeth forth two of his disciples, and saith unto them, Go ye into the city, and there shall meet you a man bearing a pitcher of water: follow him. 14 And wheresoever he shall go in, say ye to the goodman of the house, The Master saith, Where is the guestchamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples? 15 And he will shew you a large upper room furnished and prepared: there make ready for us. 16 And his disciples went forth, and came into the city, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the passover. 17 And in the evening he cometh with the twelve. 18 And as they sat and did eat, Jesus said, Verily I say unto you, One of you which eateth with me shall betray me. 19 And they began to be sorrowful, and to say unto him one by one, Is it I? and another said, Is it I? 20 And he answered and said unto them, It is one of the twelve, that dippeth with me in the dish. 21 The Son of man indeed goeth, as it is written of him: but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! good were it for that man if he had never been born. 22 And as they did eat, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and brake it, and gave to them, and said, Take, eat: this is my body. 23 And he took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them: and they all drank of it. 24 And he said unto them, This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many. 25 Verily I say unto you, I will drink no more of the fruit of the vine, until that day that I drink it new in the kingdom of God. 26 And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives. 27 And Jesus saith unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered. 28 But after that I am risen, I will go before you into Galilee. 29 But Peter said unto him, Although all shall be offended, yet will not I. 30 And Jesus saith unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That this day, even in this night, before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice. 31 But he spake the more vehemently, If I should die with thee, I will not deny thee in any wise. Likewise also said they all. 32 And they came to a place which was named Gethsemane: and he saith to his disciples, Sit ye here, while I shall pray. 33 And he taketh with him Peter and James and John, and began to be sore amazed, and to be very heavy; 34 And saith unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful unto death: tarry ye here, and watch. 35 And he went forward a little, and fell on the ground, and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him. 36 And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt. 37 And he cometh, and findeth them sleeping, and saith unto Peter, Simon, sleepest thou? couldest not thou watch one hour? 38 Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak. 39 And again he went away, and prayed, and spake the same words. 40 And when he returned, he found them asleep again, (for their eyes were heavy,) neither wist they what to answer him. 41 And he cometh the third time, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: it is enough, the hour is come; behold, the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 42 Rise up, let us go; lo, he that betrayeth me is at hand. 43 And immediately, while he yet spake, cometh Judas, one of the twelve, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priest and the scribes and the elders. 44 And he that betrayed him had given them a token, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he; take him, and lead him away safely. 45 And as soon as he was come, he goeth straightway to him, and saith, Master, master; and kissed him. 46 And they laid their hands on him, and took him. 47 And one of them that stood by drew a sword, and smote a servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear. 48 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Are ye come out, as against a thief, with swords and with staves to take me? 49 I was daily with you in the temple teaching, and ye took me not: but the scriptures must be fulfilled. 50 And they all forsook him, and fled. 51 And there followed him a certain young man, having a linen cloth cast about his naked body; and the young men laid hold on him: 52 And he left the linen cloth, and fled from them naked. 53 And they led Jesus away to the high priest: and with him were assembled all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes. 54 And Peter followed him afar off, even into the palace of the high priest: and he sat with the servants, and warmed himself at the fire. 55 And the chief priests and all the council sought for witness against Jesus to put him to death; and found none. 56 For many bare false witness against him, but their witness agreed not together. 57 And there arose certain, and bare false witness against him, saying, 58 We heard him say, I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and within three days I will build another made without hands. 59 But neither so did their witness agree together. 60 And the high priest stood up in the midst, and asked Jesus, saying, Answerest thou nothing? what is it which these witness against thee? 61 But he held his peace, and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked him, and said unto him, Art thou the Christ, the Son of the Blessed? 62 And Jesus said, I am: and ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven. 63 Then the high priest rent his clothes, and saith, What need we any further witnesses? 64 Ye have heard the blasphemy: what think ye? And they all condemned him to be guilty of death. 65 And some began to spit on him, and to cover his face, and to buffet him, and to say unto him, Prophesy: and the servants did strike him with the palms of their hands. 66 And as Peter was beneath in the palace, there cometh one of the maids of the high priest: 67 And when she saw Peter warming himself, she looked upon him, and said, And thou also wast with Jesus of Nazareth. 68 But he denied, saying, I know not, neither understand I what thou sayest. And he went out into the porch; and the cock crew. 69 And a maid saw him again, and began to say to them that stood by, This is one of them. 70 And he denied it again. And a little after, they that stood by said again to Peter, Surely thou art one of them: for thou art a Galilaean, and thy speech agreeth thereto. 71 But he began to curse and to swear, saying, I know not this man of whom ye speak. 72 And the second time the cock crew. And Peter called to mind the word that Jesus said unto him, Before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice. And when he thought thereon, he wept.

Planer på att döda Jesus

1 Det var nu två dagar kvar till påskhögtiden* skulle börja. Översteprästerna och laglärarna* sökte fortfarande efter ett bra sätt att i hemlighet kunna arrestera Jesus och döda honom. 2 ”Men”, sa de till varandra, ”inte under själva påskhögtiden, för det kan leda till upplopp.”

En kvinna smörjer Jesus med dyrbar olja

3 När Jesus var i Betania hälsade han på hos Simon, som tidigare hade varit spetälsk. Och medan de åt där tillsammans, kom en kvinna fram med en flaska välluktande, dyrbar olja. Kvinnan bröt sönder flaskan och hällde hela innehållet över Jesus huvud, 4 vilket retade några av gästerna. ”Ett sådant slöseri med olja”, sa de till varandra. 5 ”Den där oljan var ju värd nästan en årslön. Tänk om hon hade sålt oljan istället och gett pengarna åt de fattiga!” Och så började de skälla på henne. 6 Men Jesus sa: ”Lämna henne ifred! Varför kritiserar ni henne? Hon har gjort en god gärning mot mig. 7 De fattiga kommer ni alltid att ha ibland er, och ni kan hjälpa dem hur mycket ni vill, men mig kommer ni inte att ha hos er så länge till. 8 Den här kvinnan har gjort vad hon kunde. Hon har i förväg smort min kropp med olja inför begravningen. 9 Faktum är, att överallt i världen där man sprider budskapet om mig, ska man också berätta om det hon nyss gjorde och komma ihåg henne.”

Judas beslutar att förråda Jesus

10 Efter denna händelse gick Judas Iskariot, en av Jesus tolv närmaste efterföljare, till översteprästerna för att förråda Jesus. 11 Översteprästerna blev mycket glada och lovade honom pengar. Och Judas började genast söka efter ett lämpligt tillfälle att förråda Jesus.

Jesus efterföljare förbereder påskmåltiden

12 På första dagen i påskhögtiden*, den dag då påsklammen slaktades, frågade Jesus efterföljare honom: ”Vart vill du att vi ska gå för att ordna med påskmåltiden åt dig?” 13 Jesus skickade då iväg två av dem och förklarade:”Gå in i Jerusalem. Där kommer ni att möta en man som bär en vattenkruka. Följ efter honom. 14 Säg sedan till den man som äger huset där han går in: ’Vår Mästare undrar var salen är där han kan äta påskmåltiden tillsammans med sina efterföljare.’ 15 Han kommer då att ta med er en trappa upp till ett stort rum där det redan är dukat. Gör i ordning vår måltid där.” 16 Då gick de två efterföljarna iväg till staden och fann att allt var precis som Jesus hade sagt, och de ordnade med påskmåltiden.

Jesus och hans efterföljare äter den sista måltiden

17 På kvällen kom sedan Jesus dit med sina tolv närmaste efterföljare. 18 Och medan de åt sa Jesus till dem: ”Jag ska säga er som det är: en av er kommer att förråda mig, en av er som äter här vid bordet.*” 19 Då blev de bedrövade, och en efter en frågade de Jesus: ”Det är väl inte jag?” 20 Han svarade: ”Det är en av er tolv, han som doppar sitt bröd i fatet tillsammans med mig.* 21 För jag, Människosonen*, måste dö, precis som Gud förutsagt i Skriften*, men olycka ska drabba den människa som förråder mig! Det hade varit bättre för den människan om hon aldrig hade blivit född!” 22 Medan de åt tog Jesus ett bröd, och när han hade tackat Gud för det, bröt han det i bitar och gav det till dem och sa: ”Ta detta, för det är min kropp.” 23 Sedan tog han en bägare vin och tackade Gud och gav den till dem, och alla drack ur den. 24 Han sa till dem: ”Detta är mitt blod, som bekräftar det nya förbundet mellan Gud och människor, och som offras för alla*. 25 Jag försäkrar er, att från och med nu ska jag inte dricka vin igen, förrän den dag då Gud regerar och jag dricker det nya vinet i hans nya värld.*”

Jesus förutsäger att Petrus ska svika honom

26 När de till sist hade sjungit lovsången* tillsammans, gick de ut till Olivberget. 27 Där sa Jesus till dem: ”Ni kommer alla att överge mig, för Gud säger i Skriften*: ’Jag ska döda herden, och fåren ska skingras.’* 28 Men när jag uppstått från de döda, ska jag gå före er till Galileen och träffa er där.” 29 Då sa Petrus: ”Även om alla andra överger dig, så ska inte jag göra det!” 30 Jesus sa till honom: ”Jag försäkrar dig, att redan innan tuppen hinner gala två gånger i morgon bitti, ska du tre gånger ha förnekat att du känner mig.” 31 Men Petrus gav sig inte, utan sa: ”Om jag så måste dö med dig, ska jag aldrig förneka dig!” Och alla de andra sa samma sak.

Jesus ber i Getsemane

32 De kom så till ett ställe som kallas Getsemane, och där sa Jesus till sina efterföljare: ”Sätt er här medan jag går bort och ber”, 33 men han tog med sig Petrus, Jakob och Johannes. Han greps nu av bävan och ångest, 34 och han sa till dem: ”Jag är nära att bryta samman av förtvivlan. Stanna kvar här och vaka tillsammans med mig.” 35 Sedan gick han lite längre bort och föll ner på marken, och han bad till sin Far att få slippa den fruktansvärda stund som väntade honom, om det var möjligt. 36 ”Pappa, Far i himlen”*, sa han, ”allt är möjligt för dig. Låt mig slippa det lidande som väntar. Men låt det bli som du vill, inte som jag vill.” 37 Efter ett tag kom han tillbaka till sina tre efterföljare och hittade dem sovande. ”Simon”, sa han till Petrus*, ”sover du? Klarade du inte att hålla dig vaken en enda timma? 38 Vaka och be så att frestelserna inte segrar över er. Ni vill så gärna, men kroppen gör det svårt för er.” 39 Så gick han bort och bad med samma ord. 40 Men när han kom tillbaka till de tre efterföljarna, såg han att de hade somnat igen. Det var omöjligt för dem att hålla ögonen öppna, och de visste inte vad de skulle säga. 41 När han kom tillbaka till dem för tredje gången sa han: ”Ja, ni sover och vilar er fortfarande. Men nu räcker det! Nu har den tidpunkt kommit då Gud bestämt att jag, Människosonen*, ska överlämnas till onda människor. 42 Res er upp, så går vi härifrån! Här kommer han som ska förråda mig.”

Jesus blir förrådd och arresterad

43 Medan Jesus fortfarande talade kom Judas, en av hans tolv närmaste efterföljare, tillsammans med en folkhop beväpnad med svärd och klubbor. De var utsända av översteprästerna och laglärarna* och folkets ledare. 44 Förrädaren hade kommit överens med dem om ett tecken och sagt: ”Den man som jag hälsar med en kyss är det. Honom ska ni gripa och föra bort under bevakning.” 45 Så snart Judas kommit dit, gick han därför fram till Jesus. ”Mästare”, sa han och gav honom en hälsningskyss. 46 Och då grep folkhopen Jesus och höll fast honom. 47 Men en av hans efterföljare drog sitt svärd och högg örat av översteprästens tjänare. 48 Jesus frågade dem: ”Är jag en så farlig brottsling att ni var tvungna att beväpna er med svärd och klubbor för att gripa mig? 49 Varför arresterade ni mig inte på tempelplatsen? Varje dag har jag varit tillsammans med er där och undervisat utan att ni har gripit mig. Men allt detta har hänt för att det som Gud förutsagt om mig i Skriften* ska bli verklighet.” 50 I samma stund övergav alla hans efterföljare honom och flydde. 51 Men en ung man, som bara hade ett linneskynke på sig, följde efter Jesus. Och när man försökte gripa honom, 52 lämnade han skynket och sprang därifrån helt naken.

Jesus förhörs av det judiska rådet

53 De förde nu Jesus till översteprästens hus, där alla översteprästerna och folkets ledare och laglärarna* snart samlades. 54 Petrus följde efter på avstånd och lyckades ta sig ända in på översteprästens gård. Där slog han sig sedan ner bland tjänarna och värmde sig vid elden. 55 Inne i huset försökte översteprästerna och hela det judiska rådet* att hitta vittnesberättelser som skulle räcka för att döma Jesus till döden. Men de hittade inga. 56 Många vittnade falskt, men vittnena sa hela tiden emot varandra. 57 Till sist kom i alla fall några med det falska påståendet: 58 ”Vi har hört honom säga: ’Jag ska riva ner det här templet, som är byggt av människor, och på tre dagar bygga upp ett annat utan människors hjälp!’ ” 59 Men inte heller på den punkten stämde deras berättelser överens. 60 Då reste sig översteprästen upp inför rådet och sa till Jesus: ”Varför svarar du inte? Har du sagt detta eller inte?” 61 Men Jesus teg och svarade ingenting. Då ställde översteprästen ännu en fråga: ”Är du Messias, den utlovade kungen, Guds Son?” 62 ”Ja, det är jag”, svarade Jesus, ”och ni ska få se mig, Människosonen*, sitta på Guds högra sida och regera, och ni ska få se mig komma på himlens moln.*” 63 Då slet översteprästen sönder sina kläder och ropade: ”Det behövs inga fler vittnen. Ni har själva hört honom häda Gud. Vad ska han få för dom?” Då röstade alla för att han skulle dömas till döden. 65 Sedan började några att spotta på honom, och de band för hans ögon och slog honom i ansiktet med knytnävarna. ”Visa att du är en profet som kan avslöja saker med Guds hjälp*”, sa de. Och vakterna gav honom örfilar.

Petrus förnekar att han känner Jesus

66 Under tiden väntade Petrus nere på gårdsplanen. En av översteprästens tjänsteflickor kom då dit och fick syn på Petrus som satt och värmde sig vid elden. Hon stirrade ett tag på honom och sa sedan: ”Du var väl också tillsammans med den där Jesus från Nasaret?” 68 Men Petrus protesterade och sa: ”Jag vet inte ens vad du pratar om!” Sedan gick han ut till den yttre gården. Och just då gol tuppen.* 69 Efter en stund fick tjänsteflickan syn på honom där och sa än en gång högt till dem som stod runt omkring: ”Han är också en av dem!” 70 Men Petrus nekade igen. Lite senare sa de som stod där till Petrus: ”Visst är du en av dem. Du kommer ju också från Galileen.” 71 Men Petrus svor, och lovade dyrt och heligt: ”Jag känner inte den där mannen som ni talar om!” 72 Och i samma stund gol tuppen för andra gången. Då plötsligt kom Petrus ihåg vad Jesus hade sagt till honom: ”Innan tuppen gal två gånger ska du förneka mig tre gånger.” Och han började gråta.
